The premise of the book is two-fold... the first is to chronicle the narrator's insecurities about attending her 50th elementary school reunion and the second is to chronicle a life of unsent letters to public figures (and the narrator's granddaughter) and observations about appearance flaws.
I think this book would have worked if she had focused on one (the reunion) or the other (the unsent letters). As it stands, it tried to do too much and failed. And believe me, I want to like Ilene Beckerman, if not just because she didn't publish her first book until she was 60.
What did I like about this book? The juxtaposition of the "Vertigo" quote in 1958 with the "Bridget Jones" quote in 2001... "Why can't you like me just the way I am?"
I was also pleased to learn that Botticelli's Venus would have worn a size 16!
Having read two of Beckerman's other books ("Love, Loss, and What I Wore" and "What We Do For Love"), the theme is trite and predictable. The prose is thin and the margins too wide. I'd recommend either of those books over this one.
The observations and feelings presented in "Makeovers" are not necessarily outdated, they're just something we already knew. Although I'm not sure how many of us could actually identify with attending your 50th elementary school reunion. I didn't even show up to the 10 year of my high school.
Tell us something new, Ms. Beckerman. Share your wisdom and experience.

- I am a therapist and have led groups using this book and had clients read this book to accompany our individual therapy. I think I have had at least 35 clients use it. Every single client has loved it! They have found it to be practical and useful to help them overcome poor self-esteem and feel better about themselves when they didn't get this foundation in childhood. It is easy to read, encourages insight, offers specific ways to change. A very useful book. Thanks, Dr. Hart!
- I certainly didn't think that such a little book would have such a big impact on my thoughts about myself and others, but it did! While much of what Dr. Hart says feels often "common-sensical", and the analogy of the emergence of the butterfly seems simple and cliche, everything she has to say is also very valid. The way in which it was presented was accessible without seeming condescending or too simple. (More "a-ha" moments than "Well, duh" ones.) I took several weeks to read through this book, do (most of) the simple exercises, and really think about what I was reading and how I felt about myself - past and present. I've read a lot of things on self-esteem, and this was the first book which really helped me CHANGE my self-esteem. I think almost anyone would benefit from it, and highly recommend it.

- You can throw all your other self-help books away-Self-Worth Now! is the only one you will ever need. Selby has written a fascinating and intimate account of self-hate; where it comes from, and how to get rid of it. Full of courage and humor, this is the only book I ever read that makes you feel GOOD to be a human being. The amazing final chapter is worth the price of the book alone. Do yourself-and the people you care about-a favor; buy this book.
- I would have rated this book much higher except that more than 1/2 of it is EMPTY blank pages! The actual book is only 68 pages long, with the rest being labeled "Blank pages for Your thoughts, feelings & goals". I know that space could have been better used by providing a work-book type direction to the blank pages by adding questions, ideas, thoughts to ponder & journal about, etc.
Other than that, the book was excellent, and the point was well & deeply made on the very 1st page. I can't say that it really made a huge difference in my self-worth though...The ideas are great, but it is not easy for people to connect this author's life experience with instant self-worth, to their own lives of feeling lower than a sidewalk curb. For this book is actually the touching story of one man's experience with trying to regain his self-worth. He believes because he did it, everyone else can. The problem is, he didn't give any real direction as to how to do the same. Instead it was more like one long pep talk, which has never worked before, doubt it will start now. We all know that one true believable compliment can't erase in our minds anyway, a lifetime of messages telling us the opposite about ourselves...If Selby had included a work book asking "what were the lies about yourself that you heard growing up & believed?" and other such questions, maybe his book would have helped me and others who need more than another meaningless pep talk. I'm happy the author found happiness & fulfillment, of course, but am disappointed that his promise was empty--I didn't get self worth NOW out of this book. Still, it is a keeper, I've written in all the margins, and am sure I will refer back to it again a bit further along my current journey to inner healing.
- An extremely heartfelt and wonderful story about one man's struggle with who he was against who he should be. Brilliantly written.

3 comments about Secrets of High Self Esteem.
- I only bought this book because I get the guys ezine each week, but hey, it did exactly what it said it would do. I did most of the things in the book and I feel genuinely a whole lot better in myself and about myself. My friends have certainly noticed and mentioned it on several occasions.
I have not felt confident in public for many years and now I do feel so much better and I wanted to write to share that. If you want to learn how to feel good about yourself, then this book really helped me and I believe it will help many others.
- I was told by the person recommending this book that it was going to be tough? Having read the book and worked my through it, I see what was meant. This book ensures that you truly get to work on your self-esteem, not just learn about it in theory. The author ensures that you do really use what you already have to make such a powerful difference.
I have been telling everyone I know about this book as I have enjoyed it enormously. The author has a style that really appeals to me; it is like he is talking to you the whole time and guiding through your own development.
There are so many things that I never knew I could do to enhance my self-esteem and I am doing so many of them on a daily basis and even find myself pointing out the tiniest of things I learnt here to other people that they tell me really helped them on that day.
I found that on a couple of the days there was too much to do and I could not fit it into one day. This book offers a 21 day guide, but it took me about 30 days to do it all. I guess some people will skip some of it, but I found doing everything the book asked has really made me feel good in myself. To quote the author (hope that is ok??) "If you were going to train to run a marathon, you wouldn't just sprint 100 metres everyday. You would train hard and stretch yourself."
I did everything and it was a stretch at times and today I feel alive and really wanted to tell everyone!
- I love this style of writing. Non-stuffy, chatty and witty. I have read more than my fair share of self-help material and had come across some of this books many techniques before. However, the daily structure of it is brilliant and simple and easy to understand and apply. As I say, I loved it.
Thoroughly enjoyable and I feel great having read this book and worked at the elements in it. Anyone that wants lots of self-esteem boosting techniques packaged in a simple structure and daily guide should get this book because you will undoubtedly benefit from it.

4 comments about Self-Wealth : Creating Prosperity, Serenity, and Balance in your Life.
- When I was in my early twenties I bought my first "personal development" book, written by Anthony Robbins. Little did I know this would start a long journey of studying self-help litterature, listening to motivational audiotapes, and even attending a few inspirational lectures and seminars. Now, with all that I've read and all that I've studied, I must say that Self Wealth has probably had the most profound impact on me to date. And I say this even though it's been less than a week since I finished the book! Maybe it's because the timing and the message was right for me just now. Maybe it's the result of the book's powerful simplicity.. In any case, I really feel like "I got it!" Honestly, this book really tied it all together for me and I am sure it will be a tremendous asset for anyone. No matter what your background, occupation, age, sex or location may be, this book can really help you change, reach your goals and live more abundant and balanced lives. I know this without a doubt... Still, YOU need to USE the principles and ideas that are presented. In Self Wealth you will also find tips and excercises to help you do just this. Again, it's simple, it's easy and it's practical. It is all this and more... It's one GREAT, GREAT book!
- Three of my favorate personal development books are The Power of Positive Thinking, Think and Grow Rich, and The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People. Now I have four. Self-Wealth restates some time proven self-development principles combined with alot of very inciteful new material. This is a book you can't put down, and I know I got more information from my second read. Great stuff!
- This book is a clearly written account of how ballance is truly your goal on your journey to achieving your ideal state of who you want to be. Yarnell touches on some beautiful truths and principles here that anyone can use no matter what walk of life or profession. It is truly a must-have in your success library.
- First of all, there was something about the writing style of this book that made it a strain to read. I don't know if it's because it's the combined writing of three authors, but for a book that's not that long, and a subject that is not that difficult, I found myself struggling to get through. There are also some annoying little spelling and factual errors, like calling the legendary motivational speaker Earl Nightingale, Bill Nightingale. Nevertheless, there is enough of value here that it's worth the read.
The authors give a different take on the idea of motivation to succeed, which is to find a goal bigger than yourself. Accomplish your goals not strictly for yourself but to go outside of yourself and to share your wealth with others or to fund a charity. Most other wealth gurus have this as a by-product of success rather than as an objective. The authors also focus on the improtance of controlling your own thoughts and determinig your own self-worth, and not to rely on what others think. A lot of what they say has been said by others, and perhaps more clearly and in a more interesting way, but there is enough here that it's worth going through.

3 comments about How to Get Over Him and Learn from Your Mistakes: A Survival Guide.
- Perfect for my 17 year old daughter trying to get out of an abusive relationship. I felt like the size of the book was just right, not huge and overwhelming. She picked it up and didn't put it down until she finished it. It offered good information that she needed to hear from someone besides her mom. It was more like a good friend talking to her about her problems. Would recommend to anyone trying to break free from a bad relationship.
- How To Get Over Him And Learn From Your Mistakes: A Survival Guide is a self-help guide for women survivors of harmful or abusive relationships, ranging from being with a disrespectful man to being with philanderer or a thief, or suffering criminal attacks or date rape. How To Get Over Him And Learn From Your Mistakes outlines the key steps to reclaiming one's life and independence, and how to identify a man who is looking only for sex or worse. Though the author is very religious and her devotion to God shows through, How To Get Over Him And Learn From Your Mistakes is not a religious instruction manual - it is about dealing with practical matters in the search for Mr. Right, and written expressly for women in need regardless of their religious background. Highly recommended.
- Small book but enough for u to read. I'm still in the middle. but it seems like its worth it to buy. The author sums everything down for you. she doesnt leave anything behind. The book is completely about the title.

1 comments about 200 Ways to Love the Body You Have.
- Women have always had a peculiar relationship with their bodies. Peculiar in the sense they are taught from an early age to obsess about it. From early pintails and bobby socks to low-rise jeans and demi bras. Not to mention the money put in to soften, colour, and pluck every inch of our body if need be. No matter how much is done the satisfaction is short lived. It isn't long until the next thing needs to be fixed; like the diet that will finally give the hour glass figure we are all destined to have. Not. Is any woman truly at peace with every inch of her body?
Hutchinson spent 17 years teaching workshops on body image. This little handbook is one of the babies birthed from her work. As the name suggests, she provides 200 ways to love the body you have. These "tools" arouse the senses of sight, hearing, touch, taste and scent. Not only are you given a mental workout you're required to involve yourself physically with breathing exercises, body movements, mediation, lots of visualizations and a whole lot of journaling
You'll learn how your inner critic works and to recognize how your body responds to your emotions. If you're familiar with yoga you might be familiar with some of the meditations; like grounding yourself by using tree imagery. Although the tools sometimes seem repetitive, they may have to be to get you to open to the ideas.
A really good one is number eleven, "Stop Comparing". Basically Hutchinson recommends we stop checking out what others have physically that we don't have, i.e. perky breasts, thin thighs; and look for opportunities to find likenesses with others.
154, titled Hungry for What, implies changing what we put in our mouths is as easy as making a list of alternative actions. If it were that easy wouldn't there be less obese people? One or two border on corny but overall an interesting, quick and easy workbook.
Another quip I have was the constant directions to post results in a prominent location as a reminder. With this repeated recommendation there'd be no place for anything else, like say, family pictures.
This book is definitely for someone who can follow through every morning by getting up 15 minutes earlier, opening the book up anywhere and picking a tool at random. Tip: Leave a tiny post-it on the page so the next time you open the book there you know you've done it. Keep doing this until all the pages have a post-it. Then start again but this time removing the post-it for each one you work through.
Even though there isn't a lot of text this is not necessarily an easy read. If you choose to work through the activities it forces you to come to terms with your feelings. It's a good place to start if you want to work through some body issues and as Hutchinson says, "make a home in your body." Written by M. E. Wood.
