5 comments about The Organized Student: Teaching Children the Skills for Success in School and Beyond.
- I like this book for parents of students who don't know where to begin and need a good overview. It is a how to on organizing techniques and esp. good ideas for kids making the difficult transition from homeroom instruction to different classes throughout the day, which is where the system usually falls apart with many kids.
- This book has several good tips (particularly on teaching the concept of time), but just how practical is it to teach a child a special organizational system, when many schools these days require the purchase AND use of a school planner? (Really a mandatory fundraiser, if you ask me.)
I have seen where the school planner use is actually part of the student's grade in some schools, so aren't you just making extra work for the student? The author's advice to work it out with the teacher could cause problems (Why is so-and-so excused from doing what the rest of the class has to?). Or worse, it could get your child labelled, which you might have an issue with.
It would be far better to just tell the student "This (a particular planner) is one of those things that you will just have to put up until you get out of this particular school. When you are out in the real world, no one will care how you keep track of important things, as long as the system works for you."
Mind you, I'm all for teaching organizational skills, and I do agree with the author no particular planner/system is a one-size-fits-all solution. But, until schools get the message that it is truly NONE of their business how a student keeps track of his/her responsibilities as long as assignments are turned in on time, this book would be much more useful for someone who is homeschooled, or going to a more enlightened public or private school, where one has more choice in how to keep track of things. An adult going back to school again might also find this book useful.
The author does tend to go overboard on some things, such as writing every little thing in a planner--really, who has time for that--and her assumption that every child is either over-scheduled with outside activities, and/or is having difficulty in school planning out how to do long-term assignments such as research papers, wears thin after a while.
I also took off a star for the book being printed on cheap newsprint, considering the price.
Borrow from your library first, before buying.
- The book is readable, and it has nice hints about physical space, surroundings, etc. Unfortunately it is a little too commonsense and basic - do we really need pictures of office supplies to show us what they are? I am a bit disappointed.
- This is the second time I bought this book, because I loaned it to a friend and never got it back. That's how much she liked it, too. Practical and straight forward. I bought it to help organize my 4th grader who habitually forgot to bring homework home, or bring back to school. This book is aimed at parents rather than kids, and does an excellent job describing the deficiencies in adolescent Executive Function and how we, as parents, can help compensate. Highly recommend.
- The Organized Student: Teaching Children the Skills for Success in School and Beyond
I thought this book contained good information and was easy to understand and follow. It wasn't anything earthshakingly new. I feel I could get the same information from the internet and talking with my sons teachers. I do like referring to it for ideas when we need it. It provides pictures that were extremely helpful for my visual son.

5 comments about Eating in the Light of the Moon: How Women Can Transform Their Relationship with Food Through Myths, Metaphors, and Storytelling.
- I will be keeping this book next to my beside for years to come! Dr. Johnston's writing is not only eloquent and engaging, but her themes are bright and strong. This book is a must-read for any woman feeling lost in her own skin and in society. My relationship with myself and my food will never be the same again!
- I knew I had an eating disorder for a few years and it made me feel CRAZY. I read so many books, in a failed effort to help myself- but THIS book is it. What Anita has to say just rings true. Her method for healing digs down deep and also promotes an entirely new way of looking at things. I highly recommend it for ANY woman struggling with disordered eating.
- I'm amazed and delighted when reading this book... one "ahah" moment after another. Recommended by friends in DBT group and forever greatful.
- I purchased this book based on the high reviews it was given, because the description is not what I typically seek when looking for help with eating. However, I am so glad I did. This book is truly nurturing and helps us remember to honor ourselves and being feminine. I was also dealing with other insecurities that this book helped with such as body image and relationships. Very interesting and entertaining as well! I wish there were more books written by Anita Johnston!
- The best book written on this subject. The author uses a different approach than other books I have read and the fables make the book a more interesting read. Very much recommended.

5 comments about Healthy Child Healthy World: Creating a Cleaner, Greener, Safer Home.
- great book with tons of practical tips on living green. even if you don't have kids, this book is a good resource for simply living a healthier lifestyle while doing your part to protect the environment. would make a GREAT gift for new parents.
- I have read several books and articles on "green living" over the past couple of years and I think this is one of the best. It discusses so many aspects of living a healthier, safer life and gives many practical solutions to cleaning up our own environments to benefit us and the earth. It has inspired to me to take further steps beyond what I've already done to make a greener, safer home for my family.
One thing I did not like about this book was the personal stories added in each chapter. While it's nice to learn that some of our Hollywood elite are concerned with ecology issues, it frustrated me to read their stories. They make it sound so easy and practical to just trash everything you own and start from scratch with organic mattresses, flooring, furniture, etc. It's hard enough for me to budget for all the organic food and natural health products I buy; there is no way I could feasibly do everything the contributing celebrities are able to do.
Overall though, I thought this book was well-written, very interesting, well-researched.
- I am physician and in all of my years of training, I was never taught the valuable information I found in this book. Please don't expect your pediatricians to know about this either- it is not taught to us although it NEEDS to be.
This book is a resource guide on all the things you need to know about creating a healthy environment for your family. There are many things I never knew about- like the dangers of chemicals we are exposed to on a regular basis. I just assumed that if it was sold in the US it was safe- unforunately, this is far from true.
Similarly, I used to think that ORGANIC was just better for the environment but it is so much better for US by decreasing the amount of exposure we have to chemicals used in growing and processing things like cotton. Although I am not revamping my life, this book has taught me to make simple changes that directly effect my daughter's health and well being... Like keeping the windows open for some part of every day, using safe cleaning supplies, using organic mattress pads and linens, and eating only organic chicken, eggs and milk. I have a ways to go but this book has taught me HOW IMPORTANT it is for me to be conscious of what my daughter is exposed to and what she eats.
Christopher Gavigan does an excellent job of breaking down the science so that is clear to the reader. SO that we understand WHY it is important to make the changes to a cleaner, healthier life.
I am making these changes not only for my daugher, but for my husband and I, and I encourage you to do the same.
This is an excellent book that has changed my life- and it could do the same for you. Buy it, read it- and educate your family on how to live a cleaner, healthier life.
(And maybe you can teach YOUR doctor some of these things too!)

- I bought this book many months ago and it's been sitting on my shelf. I finally picked it up a few weeks ago . . . and I couldn't put it down! There are so many great facts and tips presented in a way that encourages the reader not to freak out about all the wrongs in our environment but gently guides us to take whatever steps fit our lifestyles and families. While reading this I had to keep my highlighter handy, there are a ton of links to great websites, books, and organizations. I'm going to pass this on to my parents. This isn't a book just for parents (though I am one), but for anyone who is concerned with health issues that are affected by environment or those interested in "going green" and/or saving money. PICK UP THIS BOOK!!
- I bought this book after reading a short review about it in a parenting magazine. My world will be forever changed because of it. It has enlightened me as far as the toxins that we come into contact with on a daily basis, and offers easy solutions to conquer these dangers. And it's all done in a simple, step-by-step method, with easy to navigate chapters and exerpts from experts and "green" celebrities. I definitely recommend this book to everyone and I'm purchasing several copies as Christmas gifts.

5 comments about Your Perfect Right: Assertiveness and Equality in Your Life and Relationships (9th Edition).
- It helped me get to know who I am and how to express my feelings while taking into consideration and respecting the other persons rights.
- This book helped me identify my aggressive behaviors that weren't beneficial and find alternative ways to be assertive. It has helped me consider others without sacrificing my needs.
- Even after assertiveness training classes, I still found value in this book. Wise, practical, with help and instruction! HIghly recommend!
- Assertiveness means a lot in life, and can be the line between happiness and misery for many people. 5 comments about The Body Book: It's A God Thing!.
- This is a GREAT book! I'd give it 10 stars! It has answered all my questions about becoming a woman. I think it would be good for ages 8-13
Thank you Nancy Rue!
- This book is an awesome book for explaining the pre-teen things that girls all face, it is faith based and was EXTREMELY helpful for my daughter.
- This book was great!! Very age appropriate. My daughter and I went through it together and it answered a lot of questions for both of us.
- A friend recommended "The Care and Keeping of You" - the American Girl book (which is good) and then I found this book on Amazon. I like it because it is Christian and filled with Biblical references while still providing helpful and detailed (age appropriate) information about growing up into a woman. It is very clear but very well written and not too blunt.
- I bought this book for my daughter to answer her questions and to refer back to, as she is turning into a young lady. It is a great tool/resource for parents to use when discussing the "changes" that happen during this important time in a young girls life. My daughter loved the book and was glad to receive it.

5 comments about Ten Stupid Things Men Do to Mess Up Their Lives.
- I have never really been into self-help books. After listening to Dr. Laura on the radio, this book was mentioned for guys just like me. There were a few places where I wasn't sure if she was being sarcastic or not, but that happens to me anyway. I was amazed to see how well she could see how guys really think, and to guide us in a perfect direction was brilliant! I only wish that I could have read this book 15 years ago. Maybe my life would have taken a different direction. I hope that more and more young people can read, understand, and apply the teachings that this book has to offer.
- Dr. Laura. They love her or they hater her. Put her name aside! Think about the "basic dos and do nots" for creating a healthy relationship and looking for that special someone. This book lays it out very nicely. (I also recommend "Ten Stupid Things Women Do to Mess Up Their Lives".) I think this book might make a nice jumping off point for discussion with your teens as well.
- I gave this book to my son, he is a senior in high school and 17. Alot of real life examples of what not to do as a man. Reinforces what we have been teaching him. I think a must read for boys his age.
- I bought this book with the hope that it would help me see how my recently failed relationship came to be. Turned out to be the best thing to help me through what rates as my toughest life challenge - divorce. I made it a point to read every night before bed to help me concentrate on improving for the future, not the failure of the recent past and it worked great and is still helping. The best part is that it is not preachy in any way and she gets the point across by using the real life situations of her callers / letters. My ex should definately read this or the other one for women, that's for sure!
- Whether you love her or hate her, you have to admit that Dr. Laura is provocative.
I read this book 15 years or so ago as a young man in my 20's. Although I have forgotten most of it there is one question that she poses that I never forgot and will teach my son someday.
The question is...., "Ask yourself when choosing a partner, is this the person I want teaching my children values." Hmmm....
Well it saved me from marrying a fiance who cheated on me while we were engaged, and wasn't going to tell me until after the marriage.
For that if nothing else this book is well worth it.
Cheers!

5 comments about Struggle for Intimacy (Adult Children of Alcoholics series).
- The book I have read over and over. I slip back into my old patterns very easily and this keeps me on track.
- I didn't grow up in the typical alcoholic household Janet constantly portrays in her books, so I didn't have all of the ACOA myths as expected - which she stated you may not have all of them. I did see a few lines that I connected strongly with (the actual "Myths" did not ring true, but rather her detailed description fit better). For example, not knowing how to get angry or what is appropriate enough to get angry. I see this in my relationship, and it wasn't until others who cared for me would say "Why are you putting up with that crap? I would never let that fly!" Alot of things seemed to roll of my back. It's not because I'm easy going and forgiving (well maybe!), but I didn't know when it was appropriate to be angry, or how, or what good getting angry would even do! The scenario about the security guard who turned off the lights and one person was angered and the other was not really hit home. Good starter book, you may not fit every myth, but it's an informative read nevertheless. If anything I understand my own parents even better as they are ACOC too.
- When I am dealing with a married ACOA client, I follow giving as homework the basic ACOA text the author wrote with this volume to help him/her understand how their lack of intimacy skills may have thwarted their reaching the deeper level of attachment with the spouse that they desired. It has always proven helpful to my clients as they move into a healthier spousal relationship.
- I love and recommend Janet's "Adult children of Alcoholics" to my counseling clients...but I must say, I love this book too! And I love the John Bradshaw's "Healing the shame that binds you" book.Healing the Shame that Binds You: Recovery Classics Edition (Recovery Classics) ...... and the "Getting Them Sober, you CAN help" book by Toby Rice Drews (this book is a real lifesaver--- my counseling clients tell me that Toby must have had a crystal ball in their living rooms! And that they read it and read it again, and sleep with it under their pillows, it helps so much.) Getting Them Sober: You Can Help! (Getting Them Sober)
-
This book is very well laid out and answers many qestions based both on past experiences and present. It also provide a excellent strategy to survive in a "real " world.Great book for the person looking for insight into a "healthy relationship"

5 comments about What's the Big Deal?: Why God Cares About Sex (God's Design for Sex).
- I recently purchased this book to go through with my 10 year old son. I have been so pleased with the dialoge provided in the book! It asks the questions kids really have and helps us parents give answers based on scripture! This book is a wonderful tool for using with your children as you talk frankly about sex and the consequences of going against what the bible teaches. I have already recommended this book to family members with children 8 to 11.
Even though my son is 10 years old now I have decided to go back and purchase the two previous books to this one to go through with him. They certainly couldn't hurt!!!!
- I bought this book as a gift for my 9 year old grandson. His mom recommended it to me, and I bought it. I only glanced through it before mailing it to him in England. I cannot comment further on the editorial content. The outside appearance of the book was pleasing. The small size will make it easy to hold in a small hand. My grandson told me just the other day that he had started reading it, and had some questions. I referred him to his parents.
- If you're nervous about telling your child the "facts of life", this book will save you. It goes over all the stuff you might forget and like the book, I highly recommend reading it out loud with your child. Note: it has "parents" parts and "kids" parts broken down like a script/question-answer style; but it's not cheesie.
- I think the information in this whole series of books is wonderful! However, I think the age ranges are a bit off. I don't think a 5-8 year old needs to know the details of sex. I just shared the 2nd book in the series with my 10 year old because she started talking about the word "sex", not knowing what it was. There are some topics in the 3rd book that I didn't feel she was ready for yet, so I will wait a few months. I will certainly give her all that information before she enters middle school. However, I want her to absorb the Godly intention for sex before she has to begin absorbing the ways in which the world has distorted it. That is truly my only suggestion - wait till the kids are a bit older than the book suggests.
- This is book 3 of the God's Design for Sex series. I purchased the series when my daughters were 8 years old. My girls have been quite sheltered from TV and videos their entire life and attend a Christian school. We started at age 8 with Book 1 soon followed by book 2 and then left things there for quite a while. At 11 we read through all of Book 3. At 13, (now) they have read parts of book 4 and reviewed the table of contents. They are driving the discussions much more now and we're going on their timeline. That said, my 8 year old niece has hundreds of channels coming into her home, chats online through KOL (kids online), and has been exposed to MUCH more than my daughters. She was askingin depth questions and finished book 3 this summer with her mom. The age appropriateness all depends on the child and what they are ready for or need.
