5 comments about Monkey (The Five Ancestors, Book 2).
  1. The Five Ancestors series by Jeff Stone is an exciting series about five young monks from an ancient Chinese temple called Canghzen, or, literally, Hidden Temple. The books are the same story, but from different views, because they split up. I think these books are a great adventure, and I also liked Tiger.

  2. I think the book was better than hope for. You need to read the frist book first than you will get the story.

  3. Book 2 of Jeff Stone's 'Five Ancestors' series, Monkey really deserves a reading of Book 1 for a smooth transition - and be aware, this is a projected seven-book series - but the action- packed martial-arts story set in 17th century China will win fans wherever they begin. Five young, orphaned monks specializes in a different style of kung-fu reflecting his personality: here Malao faces his temple's destruction and an encounter with a band of wood monkeys who save him and introduce him to a wilder side of his soul.

  4. I'm a librarian and I started purchasing this series for my grandson about 3 years ago. Everytime I asked him, he hadn't read them yet. I was sure if he started them, he would like them. This fall he had to have a book to read in school that represented his interests so he took the first one, reluctantly (hates to read). He was about halfway through the book when he called me and said,"Grammy, would you mind getting me the rest of the Five Ancestors books? They're awesome!" He's now reading the second one and looking forward to the rest of the series. He's 11, turning 12 in May. I would reccomend this series any time for boys who think they don't like to read.

  5. These books are great fun. the move very fast with great action.
I have read all of them and do not know how many books the series will have and i do not like this! The web site does not have it and the books read very fast so now I am waiting for Mouse but starting to tire of this.

5 comments about The Flower Man.
  1. The Flower Man caught my retired pre-kindergarten teacher's eye on a bookstore shelf, and after finding the artwork delightfully intriguing, I realized the story was "right up my alley." I bought it. When I sat down at home to really "read" its picture-stories, I realized this was no quick-read. I followed most of the characters, one at a time, through successive pages, seeing their transformation--all because of "the flower man." So simple; so profoundly spiritual! From darkness to colorful light; from sadness to joy. I have recommended it many times, and have bought several copies to give away. I shall continue to do so.

  2. This is such a touching story. This beautifully drawn book made me smile. I don't usually buy a book after I check it out from the library, but I have to have this one. No family should be without this book.

  3. I discovered this book at the library when looking for a story for a children's program. I found that it is a beautiful story though there are no words. The beautiful images help children use their imagination. Creates wonderful dialogue about relationships and helping others. A wonderful gift for any age. Once you read it, you will want to share it with someone. Enjoy!

  4. I cannot imagine why this man has not yet received a Caldecott.
Everthing he illustrates is pure magic.

  5. I loved this book. The illustrations are wonderful, and the story is captivating, even without words. This is definitely a book for young and old alike, and those who have an attention to detail, are creative, and love to create a story of their own. I have given this book to a few people on special occasions, and they have all raved about it.

5 comments about The New Basics: A-to-Z Baby & Child Care for the Modern Parent.
  1. This book is exactly as "Instyle" reviewed it: Refreshing!

I expected to keep this book around and read a certain chapter
as the issue arose, but I ended up reading it from front to back
and the closer I got to the end, the more relief washed over me!
There are certain techniques, I probably won't use-I am not
altogether fond of the idea of letting my child run around naked and deficate on the floor when potty training (and I find it a bit odd that the author is surrounded by naked babies on the cover). However, most of the advice was common sense and, for a new mother, it is nice to know I don't have to bubble wrap my child.

I am incredibly thankful I chanced upon this book and recommend it, hands down. Even if you plan to read a variety of books on parenting, make this
your first-if only to realize there are some things that don't require
    stress, overanalysis, and hyperventilation!

  2. ...Contrary to negative reviews, this book presents excellent, alternative answers to common baby/toddler questions. The answers are simple, concise and listed in alphabetical order according to topic. Cohen is unapologetically forthright about caring for your child.... encouraging parents to RELAX and enjoy their lives with little ones! As a father of his own three kids, I'm certain his "unconventional" advice is given out of love! If you like the natural, laidback approach... this book will be extremely informative. It's not for the parents that run to the doctor with every runny nose or feed their infant new food in a "color order." Many pediatricians recommend the book, even here in the traditional Midwest... Cohen must have something right, his patients in New York are crazy about him!

  3. As a new mother, this is the book I can not live without. I buy it for all my friends who have a baby. Whenever I am worried, this book makes me feel better. I have about six other baby books and when I consult them, for example if my baby has a fever, I end up feeling more confused and worried than ever. Dr. Cohen's advice on the other hand always consoles me.

He is to the point and no nonsense. I love his advice like you don't need to use soap or baby lotion on a new born. It is so true- it is not like they are dirty! Once they start crawling around of course that is a different story. But a new born just needs to be toweled off every few days with water. And you only need lotion if you are using soap as soap dries out the skin.

He is also anti nasal aspirators and rectal thermometers and all those other baby torture devices.

I read his book cover to cover as soon as I bought it and it is now the first and usually only book I consult whenever I have a problem.

  4. This book is a god send. from illness to injury to behavior. I reference this book at least three times a week. I actually received this book 2 years ago for my baby shower and loved it so much that I just bought it for another mommy to be. The advice is so straight forward and simple. Just stick to this book and being a parent is fun and less of a challenge.

  5. I absolutely LOVE this book!! All of the little concerns that I have had as a first time parent he addressed in this book. The things he said made me feel much more confident in my abilities. I would recommend this book to ANYONE that is a parent.

5 comments about Chicken Soup for the Girl's Soul: Real Stories by Real Girls About Real Stuff (Chicken Soup for the Soul).
  1. Me and my daughter enjoyed this book a lot. It tought me as a mother and my daughter soooo much about love and being loved. Some stories had my daughter in tears and some had here screaming of laughter. Please buy this for any girl that loves reading. A great investment in their education.

  2. I enjoyed this book and found it comforting to see what other girl's my age were going through, and that I am not alone. I know that thousands of other girls who read that book felt that way too. Many of the topics are everyday topics that every girl goes through, but some of the topics may be too mature for some girls. There are stories of body changes, suicide, death, cutting, and drinking. I didn't find these stories too shocking because I know these things go on in the world. But do be aware, girls under the age of 8 DEFINITELY shouldn't read this book. Girls ages 9 through 11 who don't know about these issues shouldn't read this book because it might frighten them. All in all this book is very good but parents with girls younger than 12 should see if their girl(s) is/are fammiliar with these topics and even then should think about letting their child read this book.

  3. This book was great! I honestly think that the reviews from concerned parents were ridiculous. You're not always going to be there holding their hand, and protecting them, so let them go a little and let them learn, they will get a lot out of this book if you don't make a big deal about it. If they know right from wrong, then, they know right from wrong, and this book won't change that. It will teach them lessons that can't be learned in school, just through life experiences, and through hearing others life experiences, (this book!!!) So, there's nothing to worry about, this book is perfect for girls of any age, and I can guarentee that any girl reading this book will get a lot more good out of it than bad.

  4. I have heard so many great things about this book and very few that were bad comments. Many girls are really experiencing these things like getting bras for instance. I read a very funny chapter about a girl who needs a bra but is not at all wanting one and she thinks she needs a training bra but really needs an A cup! I would recommend this book for kids 10 and up because it has some parts that wouldn't be appropriate for kids 9, 8, 7 etc. They are REAL stories about REAL girls that REALLY happened! I recommend that you have you parents read about the parts about stuff like suicide and stuff like that. I love the book so far and even though I'm not done with it I am enjoying it very much! I hope this reveiw was helpful!

  5. The Truth: I'm a Girl, I'm Smart and I Know EverythingAs a positive psychologist and the author of a book for kids and their moms, I am always looking for uplifting reading material for the 9-12 year old. And once again, the Chicken Soup series has come through. Here is the perfect book for your daughter or neice. She will love the moving and inspirational stories in this book. And I'm sure it will trigger in her some uplifting feelings and thoughts about her own life. For example, the story Miracle Babies is a winner. The girl who wrote it had a chance to prove to herself that she had really witnessed a miracle-the birth of twins, Booke and Brianne. She no longer had to wait for a miracle, it had happened and she loved being part of it. This story is not only uplifting but will remind kids that miracles have already happened in their lives, too. They just have to notice and enjoy. As a matter of fact, that is true for all of us! So once more we see, that any of the Chicken Soup books can be read by all of us. They are universal bowls of restorative soup for the soul.

  1. If you are a nursing student, you know what I mean when I say we have to read a lot of dry material. This book is the exception. The information is presented in a way that makes the reading just flow. Some of my fellow students agree that it is the kind of thing they would read even if it were not assigned. It contains examples from art and literature and that illustrate mental health disorders.

  2. The Frisch and Frisch Psychiatric Nursing text is easy reading and well-oraganized, complete information for a level 1 psych nursing course.

  3. This product arrived as presented, brand new, never used. It arrived in an extremely timely manner!!

2 comments about Love Busters: Protecting Your Marriage from Habits That Destroy Romantic Love.
  1. I bought this book years ago and have given it away ever since. The update version is even better and is IMHO one of the best marriage books out there. In fact you can not go wrong with any of Dr. Harley's books but a must to have are His Needs Her Needs and Love Busters. Dr. Harley gives principles for guiding a marriage into harmony and explains how to use these principles to feed or deprive love. He moves on to explain how to use the same principle to address and rectify almost every issue you'll ever face together by showing the most common injuries that hurt your mate. I've read hundreds of marriage books and this by far beats 99% of them.

  2. Keep the romance going - that's the secret of long-lasting marriages. Now in a newly revised and expanded edition, "Love Busters: Protecting Your Marriage from Habits That Destroy Romantic Love" is a guide to keeping the spark alive in marriages by avoiding certain habits that drive wedges in between people, and starve the love that brought them together in the first place. Focusing on important matters such as the value of compromise, dealing with criticisms, managing one's temper, and the severe threats of lies or erratic behavior, "Love Busters" is an ideal read for any married couple. "Love Busters: Protecting Your Marriage from Habits That Destroy Romantic Love" is highly recommended for community library relationship collections.

4 comments about How to Be a Dominant Diva.
  1. This book details exactly how to go about taking charge of your sex life. If you are a woman curious about how to start experimenting with some role play in your sex life, this is the perfect book for you. It details step by step how to set up role play scenes: what to wear, what props you might need, what to say, how to to go about every aspect of spicing up your sex life. And it is full of ideas for the timid to the daring so I can see using this book for a long time. The fantasies are hot, so just reading this book will add some heat before you even start trying it out. Perfect for the woman who wants to take control (or a man who wants his woman to take control to give as a gift). This book is not too wild or severe like some others about power exchange and it really does tell you "how to".

  2. This book has some really cool and HOT things I've never tried before...
Like downloading hot stories and songs into his iPod as a surprise (he loved it),
Involving a 1-900 operator in your sex games, like a mock menage a trois! (This was hot.)
Having him be your chauffeur...and then buzzing yourself in the backseat. (He almost crashed!)
I heard Georgia and Julie on the radio last week and then I checked out the free game on dominantdiva.com called Parking Lot Passion. Both my boyfriend and I loved it! I'm hooked! I got the book 5 days ago, and have already tried 4 games. I'm a DOMINANT DIVA.

  3. This book has tons of creative ideas I hadn't thought of but that are truly inspiring... I was surprised (and psyched) to see how many of the games aren't just sexy, but also super-romantic. Check out Bed, Bath and Way Beyond, for example--what woman *wouldn't* want to be pampered like that? My boyfriend *loves* this book--it's fun paging through it with him and picking out games to try together. (There are games for him as well as me, so that keeps it interesting ;)...) He was pretty excited when I brought it home, believe me--and it keeps paying off... Not just in making sex more fun, either. I swear my boyfriend is giving me more massages now, giving me more compliments and just generally paying more attention to me in and out of the bedroom. Even if you've never tried anything but vanilla sex, you'll get into this book--the games are called games because they're fun! Everything's rated from mild to wild, so you can start slow if you want--or go straight to the super-spicy... Consider me a very satisfied Dominant Diva!!

  4. While this guide to adult love making bliss has only 69 games to play in the lover's bedroom, there is plenty of opportunity to add variations and eventually reach a goal of 1001 nights of exquisite sexual pleasure. The authors state their purpose as:
"We want to let you in on a little secret: There's nothing better than taking control of your sex life and your man. It's so empowering to know that you're not only in charge of your own O, but you can easily take charge of his too!"
The two authors were both waitresses when they met but before long Georgia became a dominatrix. Julie became a sex advisor for various media. The women tested each new sex technique, fetish, or position they discovered on their husbands and then "compared notes. If it earned our seal of approval, we'd tell our girlfriends and spread the love." Together they compiled their favorite sex games so their readers can get in on the fun too. They chose the games from their experiences as a very successful Manhattan and L.A. dominatrix as well their magazine sex features and their own kinky love lives.
Unlike most of the books on this subject, this one is jam-packed with detailed sexual role-playing games. The authors take the reader into a world that even the women in "Sex in the City" probably have not even dreamed about, much less experienced.
One only has to read, or better yet, try a couple of the games described in this guidebook to know the authors really do know their subject. Sample games include titles such as "Dirty Dancer," "Naked Sushi," "Master of Disguise," Naughty Nurse," "Sex Spa," "Take Me to the Drive-In," "Boss Lady," and "Caught and Cuffed."
This 282 page book is large format, beautifully illustrated with tasteful, erotic photographs (surprise, surprise), has an interesting, unique layout and the book is fun and if it doesn't make the reader laugh, they will at least giggle while they explore a whole new world of erotic adventures. The book also gives good advice about safe sex, the correct way to do some of the techniques so as not to cause damage to yourself or your partner and the variety of sex toys that can be introduced into many of the lovemaking games. This book is one of the best hands-on guides available on this highly stimulating and desirable subject and none of the games would be classified as extreme or particularly dangerous. The games are designed to give the unimaginative woman step-by-step or move-by-move or orgasm-by-orgasm instruction and hopefully by the book's end, even the formerly shy novice lover will be able to soar on to new heights of sexual satisfaction by adapting these basic games into love games tailored especially for their own tastes.
It's the kind of book that could easily become a modern version of the ancient Chinese and Japanese Pillow books in that couples will keep it under their pillows for saucy inspiration in the bedroom.
This book is so good at what it says, that if the authors had offered a "satisfaction guaranteed or your money back" deal to purchasers, it's unlikely anyone would ever have wanted take them up on their guarantee. Honestly, these women know what they write is proven fact, again and again. The readers should prepare themselves to join the authors "on this Dominant Diva journey, and your sex life will never be the same." The authors also suggest that readers of the book "invest in some fire-retardant sheets, because things are gonna get hot. Really hot. And that's a promise!" And they are "oh so" correct!

  1. The book is pure GENIUS. It makes you cry, laugh and learn at the same time. I think every mother of a daughter should be forced by law to have a copy. It's short enough that you will actually read it cover to cover, and its wisdom peirces though you as if you didn't have a choice but to grow. This is the "best book ever written on mothers and daughters." And it's short enough to read in one sitting. Amazing...

  2. I have read this tiny book countless times as my daughter has grown up, and the insight that it gives to a mother-daughter relationship is priceless.

  3. THis book brought tears to my eyes. It's really touching and gives lots of advice mom's can really use.

5 comments about The Portable Pediatrician: A Practicing Pediatrician's Guide to Your Child's Growth, Development, Health and Behavior, from Birth to Age Five.
  1. We received this book as a gift upon the birth of our first child and it has been the most useful child reference book we own. It covers the most common illnesses in infants and toddlers in a very thorough fashion. Not only does it give reassuring advice about when a problem requires a visit to the doctor versus being something you can handle on your own, the advice on how to identify and treat minor illnesses (such as diaper rash) has been the best I've come across.

The book is also extremely useful in it's coverage of the behavioral issues that appear at different ages and in different challenging situations. It gave us a good idea of what to expect from our first child upon the arrival of a younger sibling and has offered excellent suggestions on dealing with discipline and oppositional defiance issues as we work our way through the terrible twos. Of course, there is no magic bullet to those sorts of problems, but the author engagingly outlines general strategies that have been extremely helpful.

I agree with a previous reviewer that the author does take a very traditional approach to the family bed (she's against it). However I hardly think that the author's traditional approach to childhood sleep habits is a reason to throw the baby out with the bath water, as it were. If you are planning to pursue an attachment parenting approach to child rearing and/or to have a family bed, this book isn't going to talk you out of it. If you are planning to pursue a more old-fashioned approach to childhood sleeping habits, then this book probably provides good advice (although I couldn't say from experience since we have happily gone the attachment parenting/family bed route). In either case, the medical and behavioral advice has been excellent. So I see no reason to get worked up about the advice on sleep habits if you don't happen to agree with it.

Overall, this is a very well-designed source of general medical and behavioral advice. Every new parent should have it on their shelf. Highly recommended.

  2. I have had the Portable Pediatrician for close to three years now, and have found it extremely practical and helpful in answering medical-related questions pertaining to my 2.5 year old daughter. Dr Laura Nathanson has organised the book into relevant chapters and categories, and the index is very handy in finding information quickly. The descriptions of symptoms, illnesses, and follow-up are relayed in an -easy-to-read format. Not only does this book cover illnesses and injuries, but also other pediatric concerns such as allergies, behavioral concerns, potty training, and even sibling rivalry. All in all, a handy, practical resource for parents of under-fives!

  3. This book has been invaluable to me as a parent. Sane, thoughtful....medically relevant commentary written in an engaging and enjoyable way.

  4. I agree with Michelle Fleming and Heyner. Absolutely the best child care book I've come across, and I'm a pediatric RN. Down to earth, keeps the spirit of humor and fun in childrearing, with invaluable and consistently helpful and accurate info. Will be my shower gift to all my new mom friends. My oldest is now 5, and I just referenced it the other day and saved yet another trip to the MD. (Fifth Disease!) Thank you, thank you, Lauran Nathanson, for reassurance and advice on countless occasions.

  5. Totally the best! ...rasied two kids using this as 90% of our medical advice. (There are a couple of additional in-depth sleep books we used) Dr. Nathanson clearly explains what IS going on (ugly rash, worse looking than it really is) and what ISN"T going on (baby's head is about to fall off). She uses the word 'poop' and 'pee'...this is very good. Also very easy to read; its most value to us?...when to call a doctor, and when it probably isn't necessary. I also found it reassuring to look at the other developments, ailments, and behavioral issues characteristic of my child's life stage. The final vote...we give this book as a baby gift very frequently, and all have raved.
