5 comments about Do Hard Things: A Teenage Rebellion Against Low Expectations.
  1. this book is a must read for every christian teen around the world. if you have a teen or are a teen who wants to actually use your teen years for something worthwhile, not just a goof off vacation from life, this is the book to read! the have other great resources on their website: the rebelution!

  2. I picked up this book at my cousins house while I was visiting PA. It belonged to her young son (17 yrs). I could not put it down. When he ask if he could read "his" book I felt guilty and ordered my own. I plan on sharing it with every teen I know.
This is a great book for all teen leaders to read and share. It is very inspiring, even for retired folks like me.

  3. I loved this book! These two incredible teen authors break the mold of the "typical teenager" and share their wonderful advice to other teens on how to prove the "lazy teenager" stereotype wrong.

A MUST READ FOR ALL TEENS (AND SOME ADULTS TOO!)

  4. What a terrific book! Although it's written for teens, I found the information quite inspirational for even old people like me!

I plan to give it to my teenage grandson; he'll love it! Every teenager on your gift list should have a copy of this easy to read book.

  5. There is much in this book to like. The writing style is very fluid and catchy. It is a very easy read but also one that has the ability to stir up your heart. The first part of the book, at least in my opinion, shines the brightest. The second and third section are necessary to help us see what The Rebelution looks like but I was sold on the first part. The Myth of Adolescence and A Better Way are two really great chapters. These teens know their culture and are impacting it in a profound way.

As a youth pastor I made an effort to get this book in the hands of every one of our teenagers. We went through this book in our Sunday School meetings and most of the students liked it, and some were excited about joining The Rebelution. This book, or at least all of the principles behind it, needs to catch on in our churches and within our youth culture.

    What I Disliked:

This book will not solve all of the problems within teen culture nor is it meant to. However, there does seem to be something that is missing with this book. It pains me to say it because I expected the exact opposite, but the thing that seemed to missing was a Christ-centered, gospel-centered, appeal to rebel against low expectations. By no means is the gospel left out. The Harris brothers are always quick to point to God and many of their stories include the living out of the gospel. But there is a sense in which the gospel seems to take a back seat to social change. Would they consider someone a Rebelutionary that started a grass roots political campaign but never came to know and share in the glory of Christ? It is clear that their intent is to "do hard things for the glory of God" but does that really happen when unbelievers are merely creating social change?

    Should You Buy It?

If you are an old codger that disdains and is bothered by the plight of youth culture then you need to read this book to see why teens are the way they are and what you can do about it. If you are a blissfully ignorant teenager then you need to read this book. If you work with teenagers and are beating your head against the wall this might be a good book for you. Simply put, if you have ever seen a teenager then this might be a good read for you. In my opinion this book is a seed of something really great. Be a part of it, buy the book.

5 comments about Love & Respect: The Love She Most Desires; The Respect He Desperately Needs.
  1. I just spent a few minutes reading several negative reviews regarding Emerson Eggerichs' Love and Respect. I have to say that it appears obvious that the majority of the reviews were written either by folk that had never actually read the book or were so completely biased against the concept of submission that they were unable to comprehend what Eggerichs was saying.
I have used the Love and Respect material in my counseling practice for several years now, and have found it to be invaluable for Christian couples that truly seek to improve their marriages.
A completely cursory reading of the book reveals that what Eggerichs is emphasizing is the individual husband to focus on finding ways to truly love (action verb) his wife and for the individual wife to find ways to truly respect her husband. The only time that the one should even consider what the other is providing is in an effort to recognize their own short-comings.
It is simply amazing that such misunderstanding can come from someone that can actually read.
Well, comprehension and reading are not the same, I guess.
I strongly recommend Love and Respect as the truly scriptural model for Christian marriage.

  2. This is a "must read" book for any serious couple. Even for singles, I think this book offers a lot to think about in order to have a successful relationship. It is Biblically based, but in the realities of today. I think that this should have been the "marriage counseling" that we received before we got married!

  3. This book touches on the most necessary but often overlooked aspect of marriage. It's helped me to show my husband how much I truley love him, in a way he connects to. I had no idea he wasn't feeling from me what I thought he was. Now we are much more connected. Don't miss this!
The book goes on a bit long with stories but don't stop...you won't be sorry.

  4. My book came to me in perfect condition and in a timely manner. I'm very satisfied.

  5. I'm always on the lookout for a Christian book on marriage that is simple and straightforward in its approach. This title fits the bill, offering the basic directive to the husband of "love her" and to the wife "respect him." The author uses Ephesians 5:33 as the cornerstone for his insights, expanding it to many different areas of couples' lives. I recommend this book highly to any married couple wanting simple helps to strengthen their marriage.

5 comments about Same Kind of Different As Me: A Modern-Day Slave, an International Art Dealer, and the Unlikely Woman Who Bound Them Together.
  1. A wonderful testimony of hope. The power of unconditional love could not have been presented in a more understanding manner. I finished the book with new but unknown friends.

  2. This book is a fast read that was hard to put down until I reached the final page. It is the first story I have read in which authors with extremely different techniques alternate chapters, yet blend together a fascinatingly true story of love between human beings from opposite ends of the social spectrum. It tells of lost and found, pain and healing, solitude and relationships, and rising out of the ashes of dispair into the realm of hope. It is a spirit lifter.

  3. This book, a true story co-written by a homeless man and an art dealer, deals with incredibly important social and moral issues in a relaxed but intimate way. Your views on homelessness, suffering, forgiveness, and faith will be challenged and sharpened by reading this book. Understanding gained by reading this book can be life-changing for you, as well as the world.

  4. I loved this book. It shows the power of God and how he can transform lives. I could not put it down once I started reading it. It really opens your eyes to look at people from the inside instead of the outside. No matter what we look like, I think we all have a story to tell. Some more powerful than others and it is obvious from this book that you don't need to be rich or have a college degree to be one of the most giving and insightful people there is. I would highly recommend this book to anybody who wants to have their heart touched.

  5. This book profoundly impacted both my husband and me. I have recommended it to many, many friends. They have also responded with rave reviews. This true story reveals how living beyond yourself can change our world, one life at a time.

5 comments about The Happiest Baby on the Block: The New Way to Calm Crying and Help Your Newborn Baby Sleep Longer.
  1. We had a fussy baby, we thought it might be colic cause it only happened at night. Except after learning about colic, it really didnt fit or aleast it was only mild case/signs of being colic. Which actually defies the definition of colic., I was looking around doing research on how to calm our fussy baby and came across this book a few times. I read the reviews and noticed someone summed it up for you. I took that to heart and didnt buy the book thinking I had the just of it. However my attempts to calm baby were only half successful. Ironically enough a few days later my wife had meet with a friend who owned this book and let her borrow it.

I read through it tonight when baby got fussy and I'm so glad it made it's way into our lives. It really is a life savor and you cant really sum up this book by just saying use the 5 S's and what they are if you really want to get it right. There really was a good bit more detail in it this and for such a great price, it's wisdom cant be beat. If you have a fussy baby and your almost at your wits end, you really gotta read/get this book.

  2. The second half of this book has really practical, proven-by-experience advice (five basic strategies for keeping a baby peaceful) for anyone with a newborn baby. The first half, on the other hand, is almost laughable. My recommendation to my daughter was to soak up part two of the book and ignore the first half in the interest of saving time.

  3. This book is excellent. Dr Karp not only teaches you the techniques to help your infant cry less and be happier, but he also explains the theory & why it works. In addition, he goes into other theories of colic, and explanations about them. As a pediatrician, I found this fascinating and very useful. I highly recomend this book to toher parents and especially other health professionals. My mother, a pediatric rheumatologist, has worked with Dr Karp since he was a resident, and has seen his theories work for years in many children.

  4. This book has been great so far. Just brought our daughter home and have already started to put things into practice. Thanks for the practical advice!

  5. The program Dr. Karp presents in this book was a lifesaver during the first three months of my daughter's life. We didn't follow his plan down to the letter (and Dr. Karp says it is adaptable for each baby's needs) because my daughter hated having her arms swaddled in, so we swaddled her arms-out and it worked like a charm. She started sleeping through the night at 8 weeks, and the four "S's" worked incredibly well when she needed help calming down. I really appreciated the fact that this plan helped us help her adjust to the world during her "fourth trimester" in a loving and comfortable way. People now tell me that they have never seen a happier, more content child than my little girl!

  1. Tucker Max is rude, crude, narcissistic and awesome. I love the web site and loved this book. I was in tears laughing so hard.

  2. This book is the worst book I have ever had the misfortune of owning. The writer is crude and disgusting and enjoys abusing women. After the third story I had to remove the book from my house to feel clean again.

  3. Outragiously funny, but morally wrong. This guy is truly a bad person (It even says so repetedly in the book) but, some of the stories are so funny. My roomies and I couldn't stop laughing. If you're a guy- you'll love it. If not, well, it's a good read.

  4. Hilarious and entertaining. Too crude for my taste at times, but 90% of the time I apprecaite Tucker Max's sense of humor. I must have laughed out loud at least 30 times reading this piece of work...definitely one of my favorite books I've read in the last few years.

  5. Tucker Max admits he's a jerk but he somehow thinks recounting endless vomiting sessions, discussing the many times he's acted like a shallow, abusive pig, and relaying the details of his bodily fluid excretions is worth a book. There are a few funny bits _ the Breathalyzer one at the beginning comes to mind _ but it all gets tedious really fast. It's frat-boy trash humor by a pampered kid who thinks he's being cute or profound, or something. You want to grab this idiot by the throat, shake him and say: "Grow up and care about someone else!" That said, maybe the book goes down better after a few shots of Jaegermeister. Better yet, save your money for the booze.

5 comments about The Vaccine Book: Making the Right Decision for Your Child (Sears Parenting Library).
  1. Vaccination is perhaps the most important decision you will have to make regarding the health of your children. If you don't give a shot your child could get very sick, if you do give a shot your child could get very sick.

With so much at stake, it is imperative that parents research the issue themselves before vaccinating.

Yet I, like most parents, did not. Why? Because as a healthcare provider myself, I blindly trusted my child's pediatrician. I didn't realize that they had been misinformed. And this is why parents must educate themselves about the vaccinations themselves and the diseases they are designed to prevent.

I would absolutely read Dr Sears' "Vaccine Book" first. This book will allow you to decide which diseases still pose a threat to your child and which do not.

Once you are sure which diseases you would like to immunize your child from, you will need to continue researching just a bit more about the vaccines themselves.

Dr. Sears does an EXCELLENT job of identifying which horrific chemicals are contained in which vaccination. (THANK YOU DR SEARS!!!) However, in my humble maternal opinion, he downplays the threat these chemicals may pose. For example, the threat of injecting things like aluminum directly into the bloodstream where they bypass usual detoxification pathways and have direct access to the brain.

The bottom line is that parents need to understand BOTH the threat of the diseases AND the risks of the vaccines. Only then can they make an educated guess. (It is a guess after all, I mean, really, who can say for sure whether your child will have a problem with the disease or the vaccine! Aside from God, of course!)

A great book for understanding the risks of vaccines is Evidence of Harm by David Kirby. If you don' t want a whole book about vaccine dangers and would rather spend your money learning about vaccine dangers as well as where other hazards lurk in your home then check out "Holler for Your Health". (Note conflict of interest: I wrote this one!) (Hey, but Rachael Ray requested a copy and it has great reviews so there is some non- biased info other than me saying it is a good choice!) Good luck with your decision. Remember, no one has a right to make it but you, and you have an obligation to your children to learn, so get reading! Remember God helps those who help themselves. Keep your kids healthy! Teresa www.holler4health.com

  2. I thought this book was excellent. Sears does a good job of giving a wide range of opinions (even though he makes it clear what his opinion is and what he thinks the best choice is). Sears definitely made me feel better about vaccinating my son as per MA state's guidelines which don't leave a lot of room for flexibility.

  3. This book provided both sides of the story and was helpful objective information. We plan on using the alternate vaccination schedule that Dr. Sears illustrates with a few modifications of our own.

  4. This was a very informative and and objective look at modern vaccines and whether or not they are necessary. A must read for those who are looking to be informed about their children's health.

  5. I encourage every parent to read this book despite your stance on immunizations. Dr. Sears gives so much information about each vaccine and its components. He also gives facts about studies that have been conducted and talks about the lack of studies specifically about aluminum amounts in the immunizations. My daughter is 3 months old. I have decided to follow his Alternative Vaccination Schedule. After reading this book and other articles online, and talking with friends whose children had reactions to vaccinations, I feel that I should give my daughter vaccinations to protect her against diseases but that the combination shots are unnecessary and carry a higher risk of side-effects. I also believe that the standard Vaccination Schedule is too aggressive for such small little babies. I have Kaiser Permanente and most of the Pediatricians feel I should stick to the standard schedule, but it is my decision as a parent and I feel comfortable with my decision. Our doctors have always respected my wishes.

  1. This book is an invaluable resource and every parent should read it. We all say that a child should come with an instruction manual - well, this book is just that! I would highly recommend the active listening and talking techniques to anyone with children. The skills that are taught can transform a bad behaviored, ill-tempered child into a good kid with little effort. Wonderful Book!

  2. I highly recommend this book (which was recommended to me) It points out destructive patterns of speech and interaction we have with our children (of all ages) and how to improve our parenting skills. Awareness is the first step to doing better, but not only does this book tell you what you can improve, it gives plenty of stories/anecdotes, visual examples in the form of cartoons and a QA-like section for each chapter. It's really easy to apply to real life!

  3. This is such an important area that all of us as parents need to learn. How we speak and interact with our kids is the basis for their success in life. One of the best parenting books that not only outlines all the important child-rearing principles but also how to help your child become a happy and empowered young person is Bully-Proofing Children: A Practical, Hands-On Guide to Stop Bullying. Filled with scripts, activities and recommendations for building self-esteem... it is really parenting at its finest.

  4. This book really helps in learning how to talk to children instead of yelling at them. Also since I've read it and put the advice into action my child seems to be talking to me more.

  5. I thought this book would apply only for older children, but I've found several techniques that already apply and WORK with my 2 1/2 year old child. I love the way the book is organized and I love how it really gives many specific examples of how to apply the methods to different situations.

  1. many of us are not as good as we can be because we make poor decisions. this book must be studied and absorbed so that you are equipped in the time of decision so that you can make the right choice that will yield you the right reward: not a simply a good one.

  2. Bishop Jakes has created an excellent tool that can be used before making any serious life decisions. This book ranges in topics from business practices to choosing a life partner. The book is written in a conversational tone that allows the reader to absorb the wisdom that is being offered. I recommend this book to anyone who is in a time of transition in his or her life.

  3. I got this book for someone else. T.D. Jakes has been blessed by God with gifts of unmistakable brilliance to help people.

  4. This book is a must read it tells you how to prevent yourself from getting into things that may hurt you in the long run, also how to make life a lot easier by putting down some unwanted baggages. It also tells of letting go and stop blaming others. You will not regret this buy.

  5. It covers all the major decisions one needs to take in life, and arms you with the necessary steps to avoid regrets. Topics that are covered include marriage, divorce, taking risks, choosing your inner circle and avoid settling for less in your personal and business life- all read by TD Jakes... Highly recommended!

5 comments about Are You There, Vodka? It's Me, Chelsea.
  1. Chelsea Handler is hysterical- I couldn't put the book down and I couldn't stop laughing, out loud, like a lunatic. I nearly peed my pants when reading her diet journal-- I think there are many women who attend parties and end up basically eating the house down- at least I know that I have been guilty of eating an entire brick of cheese at least once in my life. If you like Sedaris or any of the other sarcastic, funny non-fiction short story writers, you will definitely like Handler's book.

  2. This is literally the funniest book I have ever read! I couldn't wait to share it with all of my girlfriends! It is hard to find someone so relatable and honest. If they had 10 stars, I would've given it 10! Excellent..good for a laugh so hard you'll cry!

  3. A really funny, quick read. Some of it was a little over the top, but definitely entertaining and worth it. I listened to it on audio, and Chelsea's voice cracked me up. She sounded just like a good friend of mine, and it was like I was listening to her go through all of these funny exploits.

  4. Chelsea Handler's memoir is slight slushed. Handler is a great standup comic and an actress (In the Motherhood). However in the audio biography, she sound wet behind the ears.

She is a wonderful story teller, however its like telling a great joke with no punch line. Handler's slice of life with a twist is not everyone's cut of tea, its mostly bitter Vodka

However, she showcases she is a survivor in this audio presenation, but not a great narrator, However Chelsea, next time try a stand up comedy album, it would be more enjoyable

    Bennet Pomerantz AUDIOWORLD

  5. Handler does a great job with this collection of essays. I was looking for a Burrough's type of book, but was pleasantly surprised with her own type of light hearted humor, that was laced with an alcoholocis twist. This is more of a humor book than one of addiction or vices, so if you are looking for that type of drama, pass this one up. Still it was a delightful read that will keep you turning pages one after another.
