5 comments about The Kid-Friendly ADHD and Autism Cookbook: The Ultimate Guide to the Gluten-Free, Casein-Free Diet.
- I love this book! My 2-year-old son does not have ADHD or Autism but he does have the same food sensitivities. It has been hard trying to come up with new recipes when everything we used to cook contained cheese or some sort of dairy. Not only do we have more recipes, I also have a better understanding of what food sensitivities are. Our PA has been great in explaining all of this, but I definitely have a better understanding of it all after reading this. And I have more questions for our PA. I had tried Food Allergy Cookbook [Hardcover]By: Lucinda Bruce-Gardyne (Author). Not a good book for Children or anyone with multiple food sensitivities.
- Hi, im Carolina from Argentina, i just whant to know if someone tried this diet in grown ups, I have a 28 autistic sister and we tried everything, but still fighting... just now im reading about this diet and wondering if this is just for kids.... please , if someone knows anything.... let me know!!! thanksss
- I have bought 5 different GF/CF books in the last two months for my child who is on the "spectrum". It is not easy to switch to a new diet especially when you have a fussy/picky eater. This book has proven to be the best book that I've bought. The recipes are simple, good, and so far successful! The nutritional information on each recipe is definitely a lot of help including the allergy legend. I do have the Special Diets for Special Kids book (both I & II). They are helpful too; but this book is just presented better (IMHO). We have enjoyed these recipes more too. Also, the book provides numerous ways to sneak in those veggies and fruits which many picky eaters don't want to touch! This is a must buy if you have a difficult toddler who is a picky eater and on a GFCF diet!
- This was my first GFCF cookbook, so I really valued that the first chapters focused on the significance of the special diets, the biology and chemistry behind them, testimonials, and even saying the diets didn't work for everyone. On the downside, sometimes the charts provided were a little confusing and I found some conflicting info. On one chart it said to avoid lactose (pg 35), in another section it said lactose is ok in a casein free diet (pg 44). Maybe I missed something. There is a good variety of recipes. It's not just a kid's cookbook. They include everything from making your own pizza crust to asparagus vichyssoise. There are really good dessert recipes too. You may have to go to a specialty store to get some of the ingredients like xanthan gum and ghee. (they didn't have those at my local store anyway) All in all, I think besides looking up the occassional recipe online, this is the only cookbook I'll need.
- I enjoyed this book both for the informational perspective in the first half and the recipes in the second. I have a VERY picky son and I think there are some interesting(and surprisingly easy) recipes I'll definitely try. Also inspired me to come up with a few new recipes of my own.

5 comments about Social Intelligence: The New Science of Human Relationships.
- Daniel Goleman's book, "Social Intelligence- The New Science of Human Relationships", is a thought-provoking, analytical immersion in how people interact with one another on a daily basis. Goleman is perhaps widely recognized for his earlier success when he wrote about a similar theme in his previous book Emotional Intelligence.
Goleman's theories are intellectually stimulating and applicable in daily living. Case by case, the author is thoroughly able to prove his hypothesis- that healthy human interaction is directly connected to well being, tranquility, and a general sense of happiness. Goleman writes in depth about social awareness and social facility. He states that social awareness is possible by "instantaneously sensing another's inner state" and that this awareness itself can lead to mutually satisfying communication. As we live our daily lives, our social interactions, both with strangers and those within our familiar circle can grow richer and easier each and every day, as long as we remain socially `aware'.
Goleman's insights remind me of two of my favorite authors Ariel and Shya Kane. The Kanes have written two wonderful and inspiring books entitled Being Here: Modern Day Tales of Enlightenmentand Working on Yourself Doesn't Work: A Book About Instantaneous Transformation. Both books are full of incredible and insightful examples of how their friends and family members were able to attain well being and satisfaction in their lives by simply developing self awareness and awareness of others. Their technique is called Instantaneous Transformation. It's easy to understand and apply in your daily life- and the results are really instantaneous! In one of my favorite passages in Working on Yourself Doesn't Work: A Book About Instantaneous Transformation, the Kanes define awareness as "a non-judgmental witnessing, viewing or seeing of yourself and how you interact with your life." Imagine living a life that is free of judgment- that you could actually allow yourself to interact with others without the need to hide behind societal labels? Imagine living your life with free and easy communication- and interacting with your life exactly as it shows up without predetermined preferences! The Kanes offer numerous insights on how to make all of the above possible.
The Kanes' books allows for practical application that seems to nicely compliment Goleman's theories. I highly recommend that you read all three books as companion pieces.
- For Goleman fans, who seek an in-depth coverage of the scientific
research behind social intelligence, this book will satisfy. It can be an essential resource for researchers and human development practitioners, but may have less appeal for those seeking a more applied, "how-to" explanation. Goleman provides lots of scientific tidbits, but little advice on how to actually describe, assess, or teach social intelligence as a set of practical competencies. As with his first book, "Emotional Intelligence: Why It May Be More Important than IQ," educators and business users will find it necessary to develop their own methods for application.
It's worth noting that this book was published a year after the publication of Dr. Karl Albrecht's book, "Social Intelligence: the New Science of Success." Albrecht's book offers a more practical, "street level" treatment of the subject, with a five-point descriptive model of social intelligence, ("S.P.A.C.E.," which stands for Situational Awareness, Presence, Authenticity, Clarity, and Empathy) and a primary focus on how those dimensions can be measured and developed.
Recommendation: read both books.
- While these sort of books may not be to everyones taste, I found them to be 'intoxicating'. This book has certainly broadened my outlook on life. I would commend this book to anyone who wants have a better understanding of how their life and everybody elses lives fit together.
- Social Intelligence is an interesting and readable book that showcases Goleman's (a former journalist) fluid and thought-provoking writing style. The theory the book is based on is essentially a microcosm of emotional intelligence, which makes the overall book not as earth shattering as his landarm tome in 1995. It's still a fun journey and an enjoyable read if you like these types of books.
- Okay, I was prepared to get drowsy as I opened this book. The subject of social intelligence intrigued me, but books like this can be so chock-full of scientific jargon that your eyes cross before you've finished the first half dozen pages. But what Goleman offers is a highly readable text, revealing much about the brain's role in our social interactions - from the most simple to the more complex. He cites numerous experimental studies that help the reader draw clear conclusions amid the complicated neurological reactions set off in our brains as we interact socially. The book increased my awareness of how I operate in similar situations.
If you're interested in increasing your awareness and looking at how you operate, you may also be interested in Working on Yourself Doesn't Work: The 3 Simple Ideas That Can Instantaneously Transform Your Life, by Ariel and Shya Kane. The Kanes' no-nonsense approach to self-discovery debunks the myth that setting copious goals, making resolutions and being hard on yourself is the way to a better life. Instead, the book shows how transforming your life can be as simple as seeing how you do what you do. The authors also have a great web site with a lot of helpful content, including podcasts and downloads of their weekly radio show called "Being Here."

5 comments about The Grandmother Book: A Book About You for Your Grandchild.
- This is cute, but as soon as I received it and thumbed through it, I realized it was inappropriate for my mom, who hasn't been with "grandpa" for a long time. It has several pages for "first date with grandpa", "first kiss with grandpa", etc, which would have been awkward, since they're divorced...
- I gave this to my mother so that she could fill it out for my son. She and I both absolutely loved it. I can't wait for her to complete it and for my son to get it back as a gift from his grandmother, detailing her many life experiences. The price was cheaper than any of my local book stores.
- After seeing this book on "The View", I decided that I was going to buy it for my mother, mother-in-law, and stepmom. After seeing their reaction, I knew this book was golden. My mother-in-law has said this has been her favorite mother's day present in years. She spent the whole next weekend digging through photo albums and writing in the book. I decided to give this book to my own grandmother and grandmother-in-law as well. What a great way to pass on family history!
- I bought it after reading all the great reviews, but it was a bit too "cutesy"; didn't seem like language that most people would use. It does have a lot of space to write and some good questions, but no better than any other book. I would pass on this one, and get one of the many other good choices out there.
- The Grandmother Book is unique because it asks the grandparent to reveal her personality and achievements in a fun and interesting manner. I have bought many copies to give as holiday presents for grandparents who appear old but are young in spirit and heart.

5 comments about Final Gifts: Understanding the Special Awareness, Needs, and Communications of the Dying.
- Final Gifts is a blessing for anyone going through the experience of sharing "nearing death" end of life with a loved one. This book was given to me by Hospice nurses and it opened my eyes and helped me to understand some of the communications that my mother was trying to convey. I recommend this book to anyone who has a terminally ill loved one.
- I first read this book as my dad was approaching death, which was caused by his cancer. It gave me valuable insights into what my dad, and my family, were going through. I have since purchased and given copies of this book to several friends and family members. I highly recommend it to anyone, but especially if they are currently going through the impending loss of a loved one.
- This book was informative and comforting to me after I lost my mother to cancer. I wished I'd had this information while I was caring for her during her final months of life. However, it helped me to understand her needs and desires as I reflected on her health and needs during my grieving the first month following her passing. I strongly recommend it as an accompaniment to the services of Hospice.
- I read this book in 1996, when I was taking care of my father who was dying of lung cancer, which had metastasized everywhere. I am a Registered Nurse, & worked for 20 yrs in Intensive Care units. I took care of patients immediately after open heart surgery & have some trauma experience, so, I knew that death & dying could/would be messy, just like birth. However, most of the time, I was not thinking like a nurse. I was thinking like a daughter, who had very little time to be with my father (less than 2 weeks.) My father's hospice nurse, who was also a friend & neighbor, recommended this book to me. It helped me immensely, & also gave me some insight into helping my patients & their families deal with death & dying. I have since recommended this book & hospice care to my patients & their families. As a nurse, I had been told by many patients about their "near death" experiences, so, I knew when my father told me he was talking to people he didn't know, that he was in the presence of Angels, which was very comforting to me. He told me on Sunday, that he would die on Thursday, April 4th, his mother's birthday. She had preceded him in death many years before. When he started telling me that "Granny" was in the room, several days before, I was comforted knowing that he would not have to make this "journey" alone. He was lucid until 30 minutes before his death. He did die on that day, & he had the most rapturous smile before he took his last breath. His smile was like, "Ok, I'm ready. Come get me." There is a saying, "Medicine is a science, Nursing is an art." This is a wonderful book for anyone who may be traveling on this journey. Death is just as much a part of life as birth.
- This amazing and powerful book helped me to witness and tend to my father during his passing. His process followed to the letter what the book promises to those who are willing to listen/observe with a ear/eye to the symbols and metaphors a dying person will use as they move in and out of lucidity passing back and forth beyond the veil of death. Just as the book suggested would happen my father not only told us when he would die, but how he would die, what the next space/dimension looked like, and who was there to aid him on his journey. He asked and we gave him permission to leave his body and go to the light. It was powerful and life-changing. I recommended the book to the physicians who tended him during his end days. As a result of the book and witnessing the process I have no fear whatsoever of death. Beautiful, powerful, impactful!

5 comments about Freeing Your Child from Anxiety: Powerful, Practical Solutions to Overcome Your Child's Fears, Worries, and Phobias.
- this book is very informational and organized well. i like that you can just go to the sections you are interested in. they also have very good techniques for the kids (and adults) to try. highly recommended!
- This is a great book for parents trying to help an anxious child. It is written in a straightforward way, without a lot of the fluff and extra verbiage that other, similar books include. The author includes realistic-seeming examples and vignettes, but not so many that they overwhelm the content. A very useful resource.
- This book has many tangible solutions and specific excercises to try with your child. Very helpful and easy to understand.
- This book break down the root of anxiety and provides real life examples on how to help your children work through their aniexty. The book is organized in a way that the information is easy to read.
- This book took away the helpless feeling I was having dealing wih my daughter's anxiety. It gave me practical strategies to use to help her conquer her worries and anxieties. This book gave us our daughter back.

5 comments about Waiting for Baby (New Baby Series).
- I bought this for my 19 month old to begin to ready her for the arrival of her little sister. When reading past reviews I figured out that the story had no text printed. I decided to purchase anyway thinking it would be easy to make up our own story. The book is cute and pretty easy to compose your own story but would be better with SOME text. The pictures take you through what mom and big brother and dad do to get ready for new baby. Nice concept but could use some text.
- This is a great book. It is an illustrated book, with no words, so you can make up the story yourself using your family's names. It goes through a lot of the transitions of pregnancy to having a baby, like getting the room and crib ready and visiting the doctor. Great gender neutral book as well. I am very pleased with this book.
- it takes a little imagination because there are no words to the book. but my son (2 years old) and i enjoy flipping through the pages and making up our own story (stories).
- This is the best book we have to talk to our 15 month old about our coming baby. Since there are no words, we are able to use the words we've chosen ("there's a baby hiding inside mommy") for describing what is happening. She often gets up, comes over, and kisses my stomach when we're reading the book (this is not shown in the book).
Part of the book shows the parents getting into the car to go to the hospital. The child later goes to the hospital to see the baby. A few weeks ago we told our daughter that we were going to the hospital. She immediately got really excited and started signing and saying "baby!". She understood from just going through this book a few times.
- This book was one of the ones I selected for my grandson. He is a lover of books and was about to become a big brother. This book was delightful and really brings home the realty of waiting FOREVER for the baby to come.

5 comments about The Girlfriends' Guide to Pregnancy.
- One of the best books I read in my pregnancy. Its fun and contains many tips and things people dont tell you!
- I loved this book. I read the whole thing in a couple of hours. Humorous and informational. I would definitely recommend this book!
- I have very mixed feelings about this book. I think the sections on embarrassing things that will happen to you was very good. Since it was written in 1995, the whole "how to dress" stuff was horribly out-dated. (I haven't seen leggings or a tiger print swim suit in a long time.) The part that really upset me was her whole philosophy on Doctors/midwives and the use of epidurals. They left the reader thinking that the RIGHT choice is to use a doctor, not a midwife. She says to get the epidural as soon as you enter the hospital, and not to even bother trying to go natural. She doesn't disclose that you are way more likely to have to have a cecarian if you have an epidural, nor does she acknowledge that all drugs DO go to your baby, which is why many hospital born babies end up in the ICU. She makes the reader think that you should be scared of birth unless you get the drugs. However, since she has never done birth w/o drugs, how would she know what its like? I would highly recommend the very funny, readable and informative books "lady's hands, lion's heart" by Carol Leonard or "Baby Catcher" by Peggy Vincent instead of this book. Then make your own INFORMED decision on your birth experience.
- I have never felt the urge to write a negative review for a book until this book was passed along to me yesterday. My girlfriend and I sat around for an entire hour laughing at the contents of this book. This is the most condescending book on pregnancy that I've seen. I feel sorry for any woman who reads this book and takes it seriously.
- I read this book when I was pregnant with my first child at the age of 18, ten years ago. I read it multiple times and did as well with my other three kids. I recommend it to every pregnant woman I meet. It was meant to be a humorous look at pregnancy, entertainment, NOT a medical guide! Vicki used to write a column for one of the baby magazines, and that was always funny as well. I'm not sure what point of view others were coming from when they read it, but it was HILARIOUS! I literally cried I was laughing so hard through most of it. I highly recommend this book!

5 comments about Sex God: Exploring the Endless Connections between Sexuality and Spirituality.
- I am a divorced single dad, who has really spent the last few years just wondering how to put things back together. I am a strong Christian who is very active in a supportive church. This book has clarified some confusing questions I have have about starting another relationship after vowing to be with my now ex-wife untill the end of time. Rob Bell's writing has also shown me other quetions I need to ask myself, and has also shown me how great a sexual relationship can be. This book would be a great resource for any couple.
- it was exactly as the seller said it would be, book was in great condition, received in an excellent timely manner
- Should have looked more closely at the author before purchasing. Although it's a refreshing view of the beauty of sex and the spiritual connection it creates between you and God, it also has a very conservative sexual undercurrent. My sense was that the author would not consider a queer relationship as applicable to his theory and he also strongly advocates for abstinence before marriage, which is something that I think is antiquated.
- this book changed my view of myself as an individual and God as the creator and giver of love.
- First of all, why isn't anyone else more than appalled that Rob Bell would besmirch the name of God, let alone the nature of God just to sell a few thousand books. The man should be ashamed. Rob Bell is nothing more than a wolf in sheep's clothing leading thousands down the path to destruction in the supposed name of our Lord. Jesus's brother Jude as well as Jesus himself warn us to be on the lookout for apostates that will come in the name of the Lord but actually be from the devil. Rob Bell is one of those. "That's impossible" you say! "Rob tells us all about the loving nature of God and how warm and squishy He makes us feel." Why do you think that he's so successful? It's because REAL Christianity is hard. It takes sacrifice, discipline and a total commitment. With Rob Bell's version you get Jesus Lite. The problem is that you won't get to Heaven his way.
What should a person do to get to Heaven? If you said, "There is no Heaven" or "You just have to live a good life", YOU ARE WRONG. Stay with me and find out why. Let's see if you've been a good person. Jesus said "Whoever looks with lust has committed adultery in their heart". Have you ever lusted? Have you hated anyone(committed murder in your heart)? Have you made a god in your mind to suit yourself(idolatry)? Have you used God's name in vain? Have you ever stolen anything regardless of value? If you have then you are a thief. If you have told just one lie, then you are a liar and CANNOT get into heaven. On Judgment Day you will be found guilty and end up in Hell forever. But that's not God's will. We broke his Law but because Jesus paid our fine by dying on the cross, God can forgive us. If you repent and trust the Savior, God will forgive your sins and grant you everlasting life. So confess your sins to God today, put your faith in Christ, and obey God. Read John 14:21

5 comments about What's Going on in There? : How the Brain and Mind Develop in the First Five Years of Life.
- I found this book really insightful and full of great practical infomation that helps me understand my baby girl.
- I was disappointed. It's all about the scientific aspect of the brain (developing in the womb, how it compares to animals brains, how it develops in childhool). There's only 1 chapter at the very end on what you can do as a parent to help positively affect the growth and development of your child's brain. Skip this one!
- This is a fascinating account of how the brain develops in early life, and how this maps to changing behavior. "What's Going On in There?" is written for a lay audience and is very accessible.
I only have two grievances with this book. The first is that although it is written in a very readable narrative format, I wish she put a reference section at the end with diagrams, timelines, references, etc to summarize the narrative - because you probably won't memorize all of the fascinating detail on first read, but then it is difficult to locate specific information later on when you are trying to remember something. The other grievance is that she makes many assertions without citing references - a pet peeve of mine, but this is not something that is likely to bother most readers. But again, this is a good book, and it is the only one I know about this fascinating topic.
- Neither my daughter or I have made much progress reading it. It's not really written for a lay person.
- I read this book while I was pregnant with my daughter. I reread it later. It is a cogent work that helps us to understand the brain. I think my daughter has benefited tremendously! A must read for any expectant parent or anyone with young children.

5 comments about Birth Order Book, The: Why You Are the Way You Are.
- I took this book to work with me and shared it with a group of managers. We found that the book was surprisingly accurate in the the way that we each demonstrated our management styles. The first born's were very organized and process driven, while the middle-born manager avoided confrontation and tended to be suspicious. We did have one manager who didn't fit the birth order characteristics. He was a middle-born who was very outgoing and was always the center of attention. Proof that the profiles are just guidelines that can give you some insight into personalities, but not absolutes.
- People are fascinated with any system that explains personality and behavioral differences. Birth order is an enduring system for understanding those differences, especially so when the explanation is as clear and as well illustrated with compelling examples as this. Dr. Kevin Leman does an admirable job of covering the bases, including a chapter devoted to parenting, and one devoted to compatibility in marriage. The insights he shares from his personal life history as a last born bring a special poignancy to the work. Extremely helpful, especially if you remember that birth order provides a prediliction, not a fate carved in stone! I provided additional information on this topic in Letters to My Granddaughters.
- Absolutely amazing that someone took the time to figure this out .I never realized that we fiut into these little pockets. I was the last born out of five and it placed us in the position that we fit like a glove . after we read it we just looked at each other and laughed.
- This book was recommended to me and I enjoyed it reading it. The book is helpful in understanding some of the differences between siblings and more importantly, helping parents accept the differences. Whenever I read a book about children and parenting I always wonder why it isn't a required course in High School. One word of caution, after reading this book I have been constantly guessing the birth order of everyone I meet!
While I liked the book, I thought the author spent too much time defending his theories and trying to sell his other books.
- Kevin Leman is an excellent author and this book is proof of that. It helps you make so much sense of not just yourself but all those around you. Also, there were many concepts he shared that I had never even thought of in birth order. Overall, it is a great book and I highly recommend it!
