5 comments about Have a New Kid by Friday: How to Change Your Child's Attitude, Behavior & Character in 5 Days.
  1. I think the content is good, but I actually got more out of his "Making Children Mind Without Losing Yours" book. It was just a little too general for my taste. I think his points were great, I just found myself wanting more detail! I didn't realize, however, that most of the book is comprised of "Ask Dr. Leman" topics which actually work great as a reference tool on an "as-needed" basis. Overall, I trust anything he writes - he's got the right ideas for parenting!

  2. Oh my gosh. We keep 2 of our grandchildren quite a bit on weekends and during summer etc. We would be exhausted by the time they went home. They are really good kids, but there was the bickering and our granddaughter is a big whiner. There were also complaints, I'm bored etc. This book helped my husband and I get on the same page with our handling situations that would arise. What a difference. Say it once and walk away. Do not let yourself get into an arguing match with them. Let the kids work out their own problems. Last, but not least, say no. The kids do not need every toy or something every time you go to the store. This book really works. It takes only a few days. Highly recommend this to any grandparent, parent or anyone in child care.

  3. Excellent book! I am the mom of 11- and 15-year old boys, 17- and 19-year old girls (one away at college). I read the book in three days and began to implement the straight-forward suggestions. I saw results in one day! After two days my 15-year-old son asked if I was trying out what I was reading. I told him I was and asked what he noticed. He said, "Well, we are arguing with you a lot less." Music to my ears!!! I am no longer a frustrated mom. Being tough is sometimes hard but it pays off in the long run. I have recommended this book to at least six people in the past week.
Have Sanity by Friday!! And a new calm, loving home!!

  4. Wow! What a difference Dr. Leman has made in our parenting! These simple techniques are more effective than I ever imagined they would be, and I've already got all my girlfriends putting them in action. He offers practical, easy-to-follow advice that can be applied without yelling, and without threats.

We could actually see a difference in our kids in only a few days. Don't pass up this opportunity to take the relationship you have with your kids to the next level. The newfound peace in our home is a much welcome relief.

  5. As a mother of four adult children and a (young) grandmother of four, I knew I wanted this book! By the time my strong-willed toddlers had become teens I had painted myself into a corner with popular "democratic" parenting techniques that eroded my confidence and credibility. Though I had the good sense to balance my limited parenting skills with boatloads of prayer, this doctor's prescription would certainly have saved some gray hairs! With his classic humor and encouraging style Dr. Leman offers steel reinforcement to those with noodles for backbones. I look forward to putting these techniques into practice when my grandkids come to visit - and putting a copy of this book into the hands of my adult kids.

5 comments about The Vaccine Book: Making the Right Decision for Your Child (Sears Parenting Library).
  1. If you are concerned about vaccines - this is the book for you. It is even-handed, thoughtful, and will help you work with your child's pediatrician to come up with a plan that is right for you. Even if you can find a copy of Dr Sears' alternative or selective vaccination schedule online, I highly recommend that you have this book so that you can learn why he has made these alterations to the accepted vaccine schedule. It is harder for a pediatrician to balk at an unconventional idea when they know the parent has "done the research." Well worth the money.

  2. The Vaccine Book: Making the Right Decision for Your Child, by Robert W. Sears, M.D.,m F.A.A.P, is the most comprehensive and understandable vaccine book out there. Okay, I confess, I haven't read them all if any...but I can't see how any book could beat this one!

Dr. Sears walks through EVERY vaccine our children receive in their pediatric life-time, and lists out not only each vaccine maker and label, BUT EVERY INGREDIENT. I'm not joking. This book is truly comprehensive in every sense of the term.

He talks about the vaccine side-effects, the frequency of your child actually getting those side-effects, the likelihood of getting that particular illness if your child isn't vaccinated, the dangers in getting the illness (discusses minor to fatal outcomes (if any)), treatment for those who get the disease, why some parents choose not to get the vaccine. and what to consider when traveling. Yeah, as I said, COMPREHENSIVE! There are five chapters at the end of the book that discuss the following topics: "Combination Vaccines, Vaccines for Travel, and Vaccines for Other Special Situations", "Vaccine Safety Research", "Vaccine Side Effects", "Vaccine Ingredients [which talks about why it's in the vaccine and the risks involved with some ingredients]", and "Myths and Questions about Vaccines". Do I need to say it again? Okay, I will...C-O-M-P-R-E-H-E-N-S-I-V-E!!

Ultimately, Dr. Sears leaves you, the reader, with the choice of whether or not to get a certain vaccine--this is a nice change from regular pediatricians who leave you feeling without a choice; however, he does not leave you high and dry in making that choice. Every chapter that discusses a vaccine ends with a section called, "The Way I See It". I found this section to be VERY HELPFUL. It's nice to have a doctor's opinion, whether or not I agree with it--although, I did find myself agreeing with him in nearly every circumstance (I'm a theologian, not a vaccine specialist or a pediatric doctor...at some point, I have to defer to those who know more...whether I like it or not...).

But here is the truly awesome thing about this book: it doesn't end with just a whopping load-full of information that you are left to decipher and figure out...helplessly. The book ends with the chapter: "What Should You Do Now?" Hey, what? Really? You are going to lend me a hand in figuring out what I should do with my child(ren)? Nuh-uh! In this chapter you find the ever helpful ALTERNATE VACCINE SCHEDULE! Yes, I'm yelling. This alternate schedule is awesome and I'm yelling to express my love for it. I haven't used the schedule yet, but I plan to when Baby Jack is born. I can't wait to, once again, swim upstream in the mainstream of Doctors! Oh, boy...and I proclaim that I really don't like conflict. HA HA HA HA!

He even takes the time to address those parents who delay or decline vaccinations. And, he respects them. Yeah, it's true, he's really a doctor. I know, a foreign concept!

Dr. Sears truly addresses every aspect of Vaccines and Vaccinating/Not Vaccinating/Delaying Vaccinating. No stone is left unturned; and, if by chance he couldn't turn it over, he admits it and tells you to check his website (www.TheVaccineBook.com) for updates. He is humble (he admits he doesn't know everything) and loves what he does (he loves children and respects you as the parent). To top it off, as if this book were not awesome enough, Dr. Sears peppers this book with a lot of humor. Who knew vaccines could be fodder for laughter!

I laughed, I learned, and I am all the more better for it. A truly great read (well written) and a must have for all parents currently undergoing the vaccination down-pour of their child's early life!

    I highly recommend this book.

  3. Well, having started to get into this subject in some depth I couldn't wait for my copy of the Vaccine Book to arrive. We had chosen this book as it is written by a doctor and it is recent (so presumably using the most recent research articles). After receiving it, I wanted to give it one star based on the information on why to vaccinate and giving vaccines after injury (tetanus and rabies) as I did not find the information to be accurate. (but then again I am being cautious and I am concerned that generalised statements on the safety of vaccines are out of place)

However, I gave it 3 stars as there is important information regarding boosting your child's immunity naturally, and he does go into calculating risks, he does cite recent and relevant studies and he does go into the details on the manufacture of and ingredients used in vaccines. I just choose to differ on the conclusions reached.

  4. It's sufficiently difficult to ask good questions during the rushed doctor visits so it was wonderful to have a book ask (and answer) important questions that hadn't even crossed my mind. In fact, after I had expressed some concern at the 2 month visit, my pediatrician asked for a schedule and well... duh... I thought she'd have a few alternative schedules for me to choose from... NOT. Before opening this book, I had already pulled a schedule together based upon CDC info, some Internet-based research, and our plans for the little one. Well, let's say that there was plenty of new data to add to my decision matrix and plenty of revisions resulted. Some of my conclusions based on the book's data differed from those of Dr. Bob but that is because I have different priorities from those assumed by Dr. Bob (and his assumptions are stated very clearly). Then again, the separation of fact from opinion in this book is what makes it so useful for a parent who wants to make a customized schedule. I've been through all the sections once now and certain sections multiple times (as the cross-referencing is very thorough). Dr. Bob really makes you think things through from multiple perspectives and I'm very happy not only with the changes I made but I'm also much more satisfied with many of the decisions I had made beforehand on much less information.

  5. A must have book. Easy to read through and reference over and over again. Clearly lays out all of the pros and cons of which vaccine. A very matter of fact book that simply gives you all of the information you need to make the decisions that you, as a parent, feel most comfortable about. We will be referencing this book for years.

5 comments about The Five Love Languages: How to Express Heartfelt Commitment to Your Mate.
  1. The concept that love is a choice we make has been batted back and forth for many years. I remember the first time I heard that, in The Road Less Travelled, and it made sense. But what about chemistry? Some would argue that love is an indefinable connection between two people, and that it cannot be manufactured. Regardless of whichever philosphy you subscribe to, this book can be quite helpful in giving suggestions on enriching a marriage or a close relationship. It reminds me of the book How to Make a Man Fall in Love with You. You have to learn his love language, that is, is he a feelings person, an audio person or is he visual. Then you speak to him in that language. All of this is good, but it seems to me like it's a lot of hard work. If you want to find out how to truly make your spouse or significant other happy, try The Sensuous Couple's (Flip Over) Guide to Seismic Oral Sex. One side tells you how to give the best fellatio your partner has ever had. Then, flip the book over and it tells you how to give your partner the best cunnilingus possible. Don't tell me that won't drastically improve a relationship! Buy it with this book, and you'll be hitting the relationship lotto.

  2. This book has been a great help in understanding my children's love languages and just people in general around me. I use it at work and with friends. It is a great help!

  3. My husband and I both read this book in attempts to possibly understand each other better and to have a more "fairy-tale like" relationship. My hope was to read the mens edition and have it make more sense than the emotional ramblings of womens self-help books.

This wasn't any better, the emotional concepts were just written out differently and in lengthy detail as if feelings were a foreign concept to men and that all women rely on emotions as their sole means of communication. It was almost like reading an idiots guide to not being offensive to women. Not every woman is the same, and not all men are the same. There are more than 5 types of people, so five general love languages probably helps some of that group but not all.

The concept of a "love language" is nice but at the end of the day its not really that strange of a concept to imagine your mate probably has specific desires and needs that should be met. This book might be helpful if you luck out and your partner just happens to be among the 5 listed or even a combination of them.

  4. I was introduced to this book by a woman I was dating. Had I know how successful the book would have eventually been for her I would have left at that moment. She was going through a divorce, and now believes this book saved her marriage.
Either way, I finished reading the book as a single man. It did teach me a great number of things that were helpful to me. Granted a number of things in the book are semi common-sense, but it offered a different take on many every day things most people overlook these days.
The things I learned I have applied in everyday life. The few successful relationships I've had since reading this book have been absolutely amazing. The vast majority of relationships I've had since reading this book have however have ended in disaster. Most women I have dated or even had a connection with have, for the most part, shown displeasure or, in a few cases, disgust at my knowledge of my emotions and "love languages".
I do believe that one day the things I have learned may make a marriage great for me. But, for now, as a twenty-something single man it's just wreaking havoc on my love life.
I would recommend, and do, the book to anyone who is married or in a long-term commited relationship. To those of you like me however, that just aren't at the point in life where settling down is a top priority, I'd advise avoiding this book entirely.

  5. My husband and I read this book with several other couples during a marriage enrichment class. It helped us tremendously and we didn't even think we had any communication issues! I have recommended this book to dozens of people, and they all say what a positive impact it has on their relationships. It's definitely a must read for anyone interested in learning how to truly communicate with and express the right "love language" to their spouse.

5 comments about What to Expect When You're Expecting: 4th Edition.
  1. I have the oldest version of this book and decided it was time for an "updated" version for this pregnancy. Honestly this one doesn't have very much more than the first book. It does have a week by week paragraph on the baby, and the old one just has a month by month one. If you don't have an older one than this one is good to get, but if you do then don't bother to "update".

  2. I found this book to be very comforting and honest. The authors are straight forward and unbiased. Whether its your first pregnancy or not, its important to have your questions and concerns answered honestly. Theres also some humor that helps ease certian subjects that would otherwise be uncomfortable to talk about. I would recommend this to anyone who is pregnant or thinking about becoming pregnant.

  3. I am intelligent and well educated and found this book an excellent read. The previous UK edition fully prepared me for the birth of my first child in England and I have just bought this latest US edition in order to read up on the latest research and stay informed during my second pregnancy in the USA. I have tried reading other books, but found them to be too simplistic, or unrealistic. Some even contained advice that I found to be quite selfish, putting the mother before the baby. Even if you are quite a self-centered person before having a baby, pregnancy is a good time to start getting used to making small sacrifices for your children, because the sacrifices get a lot bigger once the baby is born! (I also highly recommend "What to Expect: The First Year", my "baby bible", which is much more informative and realistic than the currently fashionable Gina Ford's rigid methods.)

  4. This is a great book to give as a gift to any Mom-to-be. It has been around for many, many years and I know many women who love this book.

I have given it as gifts and the New mom's love it~! It clarifies so many of the common fears they are facing with their pregnancy, body, and emotions. In addition, the fathers need and do read this as well.

Definitely, a good one for yourself and a gift!

Pocket of Pearls: A 30-day pocket workbook to start hearing a softer voice inside of you!

  5. Informative and interesting to read. I'm really glad I got the most recent edition, since there's a lot of good information for all types of pregnant women. All in all, a pretty comprehensive guide.

5 comments about My Horizontal Life: A Collection of One-Night Stands.
  1. I actually read Chelsea's second book, Are You There, Vodka? It's Me, Chelsea, before I read this (her first book). After reading AYT,V?IM,C, I had high expectations for this book. To be honest, it did not live up to my expectations. After a few of the essays, it got better, but it never got as good as AYT,V?IM,C. I still enjoyed it, but you should read this one first, then read the other one.

Chelsea is a great writer, and I hope she continues to put out books. I have never read books as funny as her's.

  2. I started this book not quite knowing what it was before I picked it up. I was laughing I must say 90% of the time... I have told ALL of my friends to read this, and actually lent it to coworkers, never a bad review from any... I cannot wait until she comes out w/ more.

  3. This book is hysterically funny! I read it cover to cover in one sitting and I'll probably read it again!

  4. Horizontal Life is a funny book about one woman's journey through various beds. Chelsea Handler (of Chelsea Lately and Girls Behaving Badly fame) doesn't hide anything as she discusses sex and all the embarrassing things that happen on the way to, during, and after a one night stand. This book is highly recommended for anyone who likes to laugh at themselves (and others)!

  5. first of all, i must confess, i'm a guy ... and maybe that's the problem i have with this book.

my appetite to read is usually consumed by world war II, true crime and political-themed books, but i like variety in my reading and add healthy servings of pop-culture, autobiographies and humor to the mix. this book was recommended to me as being "hilarious" and "eye opening" ... so i figured i would read it and be entertained by a woman's perspective of things ... i couldn't finish it soon enough.

to me, this book was nothing but a text version of "sex and the city's" samantha. i'm open-minded when it comes to women and don't have a problem at all with handler's wide-open sexuality (no pun intended) ... the book just wasn't funny and reads more like a girl trying like hell to tell a story like a guy talking to his friends. it was predictable and the recollections appear more embellished to create a disgusting reaction (i did find the skid-mark situation humorous ... until the token panty-eating dog entered the story ... then my eyes rolled)

several years ago, my then-pregnant wife was recommended jenny mccarthy's book about pregnancy, which i also read. mccarthy and handler's books left me with the same feeling ... two gorgeous women, successful comediennes who try too hard being flannel-shirt wearing, beer guzzling, burp and farting machines (kathy griffin is one of the few that can pull this off).

5 comments about Eat, Pray, Love: One Woman's Search for Everything Across Italy, India and Indonesia.
  1. Don't even waste your time. I can count on one hand the number of books that disgusted me so much I couldn't finish them and this was one of them. The whining is unreal for someone with no real responsibility in life. The author is very melodramtic. This woman needs real problems and has WAY too much time on her hands. I really wanted to slap the selfishness out of her. Awful, awful book.

  2. I think a lot of the people who have left poor reviews for this book have been a little harsh.
I read this book as a recommendation and I have to say I really enjoyed it. If you are looking for a yoga-how-to, or a deep philosophical spiritual journey with literary prose, then you are looking at the wrong book. However, if you pick up the book as a good summer read (as I did) and take away from it the easy humor the authors voice emulates I have no doubt you will enjoy it.
It is not as religious as it seems it is going to be in the beginning either, which again, was a good thing for me.
All in all, I think you have to look at why you are reading this book before you judge it. I found it cute and entertaining. I will read this author again.

  3. OMG .. what self-absorbed drivel. I am amazed at women who are impressed by this vapid piece of work. The author is a shallow harpy with whom I couldn't have less in common. I can't relate to any of her stupid observations or solipsistic epiphanies. I don't begrudge her not wanting children. It's probably best that women like this don't procreate. It was a massive waste of time to spend MY TIME with a woman whose world ends at the tip of her own nose. What a bore. Don't be fooled into thinking this is even a mildly well-written or amusing piece. It is a text book study in what's wrong with many so-called "sophisticated urbanites" today.

  4. EG shares her journey about the purpose of pleasure, spirituality and love in her life. This book helped me reflect on my own values. I will re-read it after enjoying the first reading so I can spend more time with the questions she raises in a most entertaining manner.

  5. Moments of like and dislike. She tends to ramble on and on. The book starts to get really good and just like that...it's over. Probably wouldn't read again.

  1. you have to "get" Chelsea Handler, if you do, you'll really enjoy this book. She's funny, irreverent and certainly off center. A fast read. Enjoyed it.

  2. this was the funniest books i've read in a very long time. i actually laughed out load which i never do with a book. i look forward to her next book

  3. I needed to take a break from all of the mystery books I usually read and the title of this book just caught my eye. I decided to buy it and give it a try. I was hooked after reading the first page. This book is so easy to read, light and funny. I recommend this book to anyone! Great on beach, or when you just need a break and just to laugh out loud!

  4. I could probably read this in one sitting if it wasn't so funny. I have to keep putting it down to give myself a break from laughing. I don't think I have gotten through two pages before I was laughing, hysterically, out loud.

  5. Chelsea continues to portay her exceptional talent and humor. I laughed outloud through the entire book. I had to buy copies for my friends becasue this talent cannot be contained. Bravo!!!

5 comments about The Shack.
  1. This book was one of the best I have read in a long time. Excellent! A Must read for Christians and 'need-to-be' Christians. A lot of 'food-for-thought' material.

  2. This book is awesome! I'm having my Bible Study group read it this Summer for discussion.

  3. What an emotional roller coaster this book was. This book was hard to put down. It is about a man who is overcome with grief at the loss of his 6-year old daughter. His daughter was kidnapped by a serial killer and brutally murdered. He was already struggling with his relationship with God before this happened and this whole incident really took him over the edge.

Let me just interject, after reading about the abduction of his daughter and the brutality, I found myself wondering how in the WORLD this author was going to make this book have a happy ending...it is after all a Christian book, so I expected a message of hope. My curiosity of how he was going to 'turn this around' motivated me to keep reading albeit some parts were pretty tough to read. He paints a clear picture of what goes through the family's lives and hearts when someone they love is brutally murdered. It helped me emphasize to say the least.

So, anyway, he gets a note in the mailbox from God that says meet me at "The Shack". The 'shack' is where they found the bloodied clothes of his daughter, so he's not sure if this is a joke or for real, but he goes anyway. What he finds is the physical manifestation of Jesus, God and the Holy Spirit waiting for him. The dialogue between them all is easy to understand. This dialogue was worth re-reading after I finally find out how he ended this book on a happy note.

Thru the dialogue he has different encounters and emotions with dealing with the death of his daughter, understanding Gods part in all of it and also dealing with buried issues of his childhood. At one point in the book, I started to well up because I was overcome with JOY!!!! I had to close the book to regain composure. This author actually found a way to turn this story into a story of redemption, forgiveness, hope and mercy!! I felt good again.

I do plan on returning to the dialogue and contemplating further the talks they had (God, Jesus, Mack and the Holy Spirit). I immediately gave this book to a friend of mine who had recently lost a close friend to a brutal murder because I thought it would bring comfort.

I feel like anyone dealing with grief, not just grief from a loved one being brutally killed, should read this book. I believe it will bring peace and comfort to their spirit and soul.

The added bonus for me is that I'm from the Portland, OR area living in AZ so it was familiarly 'territory' where it takes place. The author's use of adjectives very definitely describes the scenery exactly as it is.

This book is WORTH THE READ!! I recommend it to anyone who wants to be moved emotionally and spiritually!!!

I think this book is worth supporting to be made into a movie. Not all books are good for movies, this one is.

  4. I personally enjoyed this book. In fact, I could hardly put it down. I disagree with some who said it lacked originality. It couldn't be anymore original in my opinion. It portrayed God in a very unique way while staying Biblically sound. I would definitely recommend this book for someone who has recently lost a loved one or just having a hard time and wondering where God is in the middle of the pain. Even though there are a few theological points I'm not sure about, I love how this book portrays God as being so approachable. The author definitely has a solid revelation of who God is and how much He loves us. Theological soundness and good writing skills aside, the spirit of this book is beautiful and captivating.

  5. This book is so awesome. After I read it, I ordered five more copies to give away to people I love. Every page had something beautiful on it. I'd have to stop and put the book down and just breathe for a minute to absorb what I'd just read. The first few chapters are tragic and difficult to read through, but it gets so much better--it's so much bigger than I'd imagined. This story of pure love is amazing. I truly do wish everyone could read The Shack and get something out of it. If I had more money, I'd buy dozens of copies and share! And I wholly encourage others to do so. Read it and pass it on! It's soooooooo goooooood!

  1. Another great book by Tim Russert. I'll miss you Mr. Russert.

  2. Tim Russert unexpected death shocked us all. My heart sunk when I heard of this tragedy. The Today show anchors were all very emotional when speaking of their colleague. This speaks volumes for the love of the people who knew him.

He was loved and respected by many friends and fans. He was one of the few political reporters that gave us both sides of the story. When he talked we listened and knew it was a strong and valid opinion to hear.

He leaves us with this wonderful book about Father stories of many people. These stories are touching and heartfelt which he shared with the world.

  3. Although I no longer will hear Mr. Russert every Sunday morning the wisdom of his words and the example of how he lead his life will always be with me.

This book reflects the insight we all will have experiencing life and our aging parents. It will open our eyes as to the generation they are and the generation we have become.

I hope in some small way I can lead by Tim's example. He sure left one heck of a legacy in history and in his son Luke!

  4. The coasts have had too much influence on America for the last 50 years, beginning with Rock & Roll, I suppose, and the cult of youth. There is much to be said for the heartland beginning with the unglamorous mid-west and the great rust-belt cities of Buffalo, Cleveland, Detroit, and the crown jewel, Chicago. Russert was all about being from Buffalo, a town joked about by those seeking sophistication and importance. I am a late-comer to the Russert admiration society, but I am now a true-believer. I knew him not, but I did spend some time watching his shows this election season and came to admire him enormously. This book is not all that great, but that isn't very important. It is a book in which the transitory words of Television are turned into immortality. This and his other books are our single hold on him. He deserved to be admired and was. That in itself is rare.

  5. Everyone should read this book. I had to have kleenex's by my side all the way through the book. How touching. Excellent book, thank you Tim, we miss you.

  1. I am deeply saddened by the sudden loss of Tim Russert. Obviously I didnt know him on a personal basis, only through the media. But he made each and every one of us feel he was our best friend. I saw a man who was deeply religious, sweet, good, loving of his country and a great father, husband and friend. You could tell how important family was to him and this book only solidifies the obvious. Warm and touching, it is a great read. Not just for father's, but for everyone. You were bigger then life. Thank you Tim, you will be sorely missed.

  2. What a great book. I'll miss you Mr. Russert.

  4. Great book. At first, I thought it read a little too corny, but then I realized that it could not have been written any differently. Read this book.

  5. I bought this book 4 years ago while visiting Washington, D.C. We had just missed Tim's book signing at Barnes & Noble. I never got around to reading it, but over the past few months moved it to the top of my stack. On June 13, I reached for the book and discovered I had bought an autographed copy. I'll keep it forever. I've finished the book and no words can express what a loss his departure from this earth will mean for all of us. What a countryman!
