5 comments about The Panic Attack Recovery Book: Step-by-Step Techniques to Reduce Anxiety and Change Your Life-Natural, Drug-Free, Fast Results.
  1. I can't say enough great things about this book. I suffered from severe panic and anxiety through my sophomore year of college and just when I thought I would never get better I found this book and really began to feel a change within myself. This book is written in very clear, easy to understand, comforting language. Yet it is not condescending in any way. It offers practical, simple mind/body/soul solutions to overcoming panic attacks and anxiety.

Even after I began to get better I carried it around with me everywhere I went, almost like a little "good luck charm." It was that valuable to me!

I strongly recommend this book to anyone suffering from panic attacks or anxiety.

  2. I got the book and read it hoping that I might be able to glean something I hadn't already tried, and found out I was already doing everything the book recommended, and have been for a long time and I STILL have a major panic disorder with severe panic attacks. I've been a perfectionist about diet and exercise and trying to practice positive thinking, and while they may help people who have nothing else going on in their lives but unexplained anxiety with some minor physical reactions, it didn't even begin to touch on the problems that I'm faced with, not just because of the severity of my physical reactions, but because of the complexity of the circumstances in my life. This is really for the people who can manage their panic on their own, without the help of a qualified therapist. If you have severe panic problems, I would recommend a qualified therapist over reading this book. And by qualified, I mean someone who specializes in panic attacks, because the average therapist (and I've been to too many of those) doesn't even begin to know how to manage someone with panic attacks. It takes someone who can be very gentle, and patient, and non-condemning to work with people who suffer from severe panic attack disorders.

  3. I was a sufferer of anxiety attacks. After reading shirley's book it taught me how to control myself physically and mentally when I have attacks. I also enlisted her over the counseling and have learned a great deal about panic and anxiety attacks and knowledge is have the battle. I can't put into words how thankful I am, I feel released from a long dark torment. Thanks Shirley.

  4. All adults suffer from some level of anxiety that stems from their childhood and relationhips with parents. I lost both mine and was adopted, which resulted in a lifetime of anxiety disorder that crippled many good relationships.
Although this book addresses some of that, it tends to gloss over the importance of facing the truth about our parents, how we percieve their approval, and the devastating impact those emotions can have on our adult personality.
I recommend "Hiding From Love" by Townsend, if you find yourself withdrawing from others because of unexplained anxiety. That is a classic for revealing how childhood trauma (real or percieved) and disconnects from our parents can lead to defense behavior that becomes a trap in adulthood. If you are like me and struggled with panic when around others, please don't settle for a life removed from friends and the world - there is a reason why you feel panic in public situations, and it's rooted in your youth! Look deeper than this book, even if some of it's advice is useful (like exercise to help with anxiety - but nutrition?? c'mon, be real) !!

  5. As someone who has suffered from and anxiety and panic attacks badly over several months this book that I ordered came as a huge relief when they dropped through the letterbox because not only the information and suggestions in them about ways to get over your attackes but more importatly in the 'Fight or Flight'response, to read about others suffering exactly the same
symptoms and thereby proving that sufferers were not 'losing their minds' as they were beginning to believe but that panic attacks are simply your mind giving the body false signals and thereby setting off a range of frightening physical reactions.
Handy explains in great detail the physical reasons for why we feel the way we do during an attack and a good portion of the book is given over to relaxation, visualization and meditation techniques to use not only during times of attacks but also as a preventative measure.
If you are suffering and finding answers hard to come by, get this book today, it is well written, informative and if nothing else it will give you the knowledge that you are not alone and that many millions throughout the world are going through this with you every day. This can be cured and this book is a very good start.

5 comments about Conquering Panic and Anxiety Disorders: Success Stories, Strategies, and Other Good News.
  1. At the end of this book, Jenna Glatzer says she hopes the reader will feel like she has made 32 new friends, and that's exactly how I feel. The stories in this book were so inspirational, and I could relate with so many of them! In each of the stories, the writer tells about what their anxiety disorder is like and how they cured it, and then the psychologist gives an explanation about the methods the writer used. I was happy to find out that many of them didn't use medication to get better, because that's what scares me! I don't want to be on medication for the rest of my life. A lot of the people in this book got better through therapy or self-help tapes or their own relaxation methods. I thought I was alone in a lot of my feelings, but now I know I'm not. If you have an anxiety disorder, this book will make you feel like there is hope. I can't wait to be a conqueror, too!

  2. This book is written by real people with real problems and real cures.
It should be an inspiration to anyone with panic disorder. Go but it. Now!

  3. Paul Foxman, Ph.D. and Director of the Center for Anxiety Disorders in Vermont, offers an introduction in which he introduces himself as one who has suffered from anxiety and offers commentaries at the end of each essay. He says "These stories are full of hope and promise for anxiety recovery. May they fulfill their mission to spread the word and inspire many others to conquer their anxieties."

Each chapter is a story and is shown on the Content's page. In addition, Glatzer has organized the topics addressed to make disorders, therapies and feelings very easy to find.

The chapters average about 5 pages each but some are just a couple of pages and a few are 7 or 8 pages in length. The essays are presented as written by the authors so it was not Glatzer's intention to edit them down or "tweak" them.

Glatzer's hope is that people realize they are not alone while reading these 31 essays describing very personal situations and feelings. The authors have opened themselves up to the world. You will find a couple of professional writers, you will read stories by people who just like to write, and others who perhaps never intended to see their story in print.

I found that more often than not most of the authors used some of Foxman's approaches even if they didn't know they were. I like Foxman's commentaries a lot. I like the fact that not only does he explain in a professional way what often times the authors do not do because they are telling their story, but he also talks about how the various conditions came to be (perhaps multiple stresses). He also talks about physical symptoms, which are an important part of this book for people who are seeking help or seeking to understand if they need help.

The book is listed under psychology/self-help on the cover and I would imagine it being used in classrooms. Rarely will a student or an onlooker have a look into what panic and anxiety is like from a first-hand perspective with no clinical jargon or going back to one's childhood to find out the answers to why it happened. Some authors do attempt to figure out the whys, but for many, the whys are much less important than the "what can I do and who will help me" questions.

How do I know this? I am an author in this book. I am not reviewing it to sell it, however. My bottom line is that this is a book of hope and of wanting not only to be heard but also to have others get some relief from their suffering. I wish I had been handed it 20 years ago.

  4. Compiled and edited by Jenna Glatzner (Editor-in-Chief of Absolute Write - a website for aspiring writers), and supported with commentaries by Paul Foxman (Director of the Center for Anxiety Disorders in Burlington, Vermont), Conquering Panic and Anxiety Disorders: Success Stories, Strategies, And Other Good News is an impressive collection of thirty-one true and inspiring stories of men and women who have confronted and overcome panic, agoraphobia, obsessive-compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress, and more. An engaging and motivating set of success stories blazing a positive series of examples filled with hope for a better present and future, Conquering Panic and Anxiety Disorders is especially recommended reading for anyone struggling to cope with their own emotional stresses and predilections.

  5. If you suffer from any panic or anxiety disorder, often times you feel very alone in your plight. Many times, you wonder if you'll ever 'see' your old self again. It's a scary place to be, because I've been there.

In these true stories from folks spanning the spectrum of life, you quickly discover that all the feelings associated with anxiety and panic have been felt by countless others. A critical element to this book are the commentaries after each story by Dr. Paul Foxman. He treats each person's story on an individual basis, offering insight to the root of the disorder, and the very clear hope for overcoming it.

In each of the contributing author's stories, I am certain anyone suffering from panic or anxiety- perhaps both, will find comfort in knowing there's someone out there who made it through a very dark, lonely place to the bright side of living a full and enriching life.

This book is not intimidating with technical/medical jargon- rather, it's a book that's easily digested and leaves its mark by teaching someone suffering the power of hope and healing they hold within themselves. Highly recommended.

3 comments about Managing Your Anxiety: Regaining Control When You Feel Stres.
  1. When I was feeling paralyzed by (what I didn't recognize yet as) anxiety while writing my graduate school thesis, a counselor recommended I read this book. I began feeling better from Day 1, when I was able to immediately give my problem (constant fear and worry accompnaied by physical symptoms of shortness of breath, rapid heart beat, jumpiness, chest pains etc.) a name, and understand its origins. The simple methods of changing some of your negative self-talk to accepting and positive messages provide the amazing benefits of "cognitive therapy", which has noticeable effects from the first day you begin to not be so hard on yourself, and continuing results years into the future as you begin to change your approach to life in general to reduce mental and emotional stress.

What do you have to lose in buying this cheap $5 paperback? If you are suffering from crippling anxiety, you have everything to gain.

  2. I have been troubled by anxiety for many years and have not been too optimistic about finding a book that would deal with my particular problem. Managing Your Anxiety by Christopher J. McCullough and Robert Woods Mann comes very close to dealing with it. Although initially intended for people with Agoraphobia (fear of open places), the book gives a detailed account of how to manage anxiety using journals, lists, and other methods of making you realize what goes into your anxiety. I like in particular its specificity and the non-technical way in which it explains the roots of anxiety and its effects and, especially, the ways in which it can be coped with. I have used it with continuing improvement in my condition and I can recommend it to anyone who suffers from anxiety.

  3. This book's thorough and philosophical explanation of the many factors involved in panic and phobia disorders gave me a much deeper understanding of the roots of my own anxiety. The excersizes in self-care program were an essential tool in helping me overcome a phobia I had for many years. It is an excellent resource for anyone who is struggling with any form of anxiety, panic, or phobia disorder.

  1. This book is a most soulfully interwoven journey the dives deeply into the adventure of self-exploration. It reflects all of life's internal issues on multiple levels and is cram packed with plenty of real substance. A very courageous book to steps out of the norm and yet is delivered in the most delightful way. It's brilliant!

This writer Susan truly has an amazing gift!

    Linda Post

  2. This is an extremely amazing book. It takes you on a very deep journey of love and life. Very inspirational. Susan did a wonderful job on this. Thank you.

  3. What a journey! A thrill ride to other worlds- your world? Our guide, Susan, fillets her true-self for all to feast as she allows us to experience her emotion, vulnerability, and STRENGTH. This book opened my mind, engaged my imagination, and gave me hope... What a gem!

  4. I am reading this book for the third time. It is SO packed with incredible insights and usable thought processes I was folding most every page so I could go back for reference. It was very well received at our womens' health fair in clinic. Kalior is my new favorite author, I have read all 4 of her books. Some fantasy, all life enriching.

  5. This book is like a guide through one's own personal reality into the subconscious and beyond into hidden worlds, like dreams, and many other altered states. Fascinating concepts on time and no time, reincarnation, karma, life choices, and even death and spirits. This book is above and beyond because it frees one to open their minds to encompass the scope of life beyond what we understand without adhering to any particular belief system. It is kind of like the more you open, the richer your life becomes. The whole book gives you an 'ah hah!' kind of feeling, a sense of constantly being enlightened. A good book to read over and over.

  1. This is great! It's been so helpful that I've bought more copies of this book for others that needed the help.

  2. I like what Ray Comfort and Kirk Cameron are doing with The Way of the Master, however this book scared me. I never got through it completely because it was causing me panic attacks. I am willing to go find it and try to finish it to give it a proper review. However, I thought it was a bit harsh for someone who was dealing with this disorder.

3 comments about Lucinda Bassett's Attacking Anxiety & Depression Cd DVD.
  1. Lucinda Bassette's Program is quite impressive. Bassett is the CEO of the Midwest Center for Stress and Anxiety. She speaks often of her own health situation which prompted the book and she does have guidance from other experts. If you are ordering the set from the company, it varies with cassettes, DVDs, CDs, or Videos. So, if you purchase an item from a seller on Amazon, know what you are getting. The sessions include;

Lesson 1: Symptoms, Causes and Fears
Lesson 2: Six Steps That will Put a Stop to Anxiety Attacks
Lesson 3: Self-Talk, Key to Healthy Esteem
Lesson 4: Expectations, Expect Less & Get More

Lesson 5: Eat & Diet to Rid Yourself of Anxiety & Depression
Lesson 6: Stop Being Angry & Control Your Mood Swings
Lesson 7: Assertive Behavior, Speak Confidently and Gain Respect
Lesson 8: Put An End to What If Thinking
Lesson 9: Get Off the Guilt & Worry Treadmill
Lesson 10: How To Stop Obsessive, Scary Thoughts

Lesson 11: Anx & Dep, The Truth About Medication and Alcohol
Lesson 12: The Courage to Change
Lesson 13: Time Management 12 Steps Toward a Balanced Life
Lesson 14: How To Keep Stress From Becoming Anxiety
Lesson 15: Getting Beyond a Growth Spurt.
    Relaxation CD

Each CD has average 20 minutes of Objectives; about 30 min of Group Session and few minutes on Summary.

The Book is very helpful with plenty of text and study guides, insightful information into what lurks behind depression and anxiety. This program will take some comittment, as one didn't get anxiety and depression overnight, the healing will not be overnight.

There are cards that you can carry with you for extra coaching. Many times she does allow patients to speak and sometime it may not be all for you to listen, but these are examples that may always fit someone.

There is a program by Lucinda Bassett that does cover just the ANXIETY if you feel that is something you need to focus on.

I have listened to this as an aid for a few people, and I am impressed by the text and her entire program. ....MzRizz

  2. My own personal observations about this program are:

    *It's worth the price
    *It really works
*It can change your live, as it has changed mine.

I had panic attacks and anxiety in my 20's and bought the tape version of this program in the late 90s. I used it to cure my panic attacks, and learn how to calm anxiety.

A lot of the tips could also be used for depression or anger. In fact, there are individual sections on anger and depression.

I gave my program to a friend after I was done with it, and he enjoyed it, too. It's a really good way to deal with your emotional and social needs, if you have anxiety, depression, or anger, and help someone out when you have outgrown the program yourself.

I've been thinking about buying a copy again, because it seems like it's time to brush up on the essentials. But just looking at the program headers, I can visualize what she said, and I almost don't need to.

No complaints here, it's helped me about 100% through my life, and I'm glad to have been of help to someone else.

  3. I found this program to be extremely helpful. Alot of great information. Covers everything from eating correctly, dealing with obsessive scary thoughts, cognitive-behavioral therapy techniques, and dealing with guilt among many other topics. The midwest center also has a free web sites where you can post messages and get helpful hints from others going through the program at www.stresscenter.com. I can't say enough about this program. It really changed my life.

5 comments about How to Deal with Emotionally Explosive People.
  1. Dr. Bernstein extends yet another strong and helpful hand in his most recent self-help book, "How to Deal with Emotionally Explosive People." This book helps me understand how to diffuse the emotional dynamite when dealing with over-reactive friends, depressed family members and grouchy co-workers. Each chapter reads true to life stories while the writer generously provides us with a solid ground of knowledge. It convinced me that, even in the most perplexing emotionally charged situations, I can be part of the solution instead of the problem. This is a book about building ones own emotional resilience. The real risk in using this book as prescribed is discovering what lies on the other side of our destructive patterns in human interactions and thought.

  2. I always knew people weren't logical but now I know why and what to do about it. This book has been a big help. The author is great, and I just found out he wrote several other books so I ordered them all.

  3. It's informative and shed light on what is going on inside those who with these emotionally explosive people. I also like the author's step-by-step coaching of how to deal with their explosion. I learned something, which is what I like.

  4. this book is a resource i refer back to over and over. fresh insights into what makes us tick. . .and get ticked off. one of those uncommon self help books that actually helps.

  5. Judging from the other reviews on this book, it is selected and read by knowledgeable people. The author, as someone else's review said, just tells it like it is according to our current understanding of the psychology of explosive people. Unfortunately we HAVE TO deal with them. Very few people even acknowledge, yet alone learn to tame the EGO so they are everywhere. To protect myself first then maybe help others this book has been very valuable to me. KNOWLEDGE IS POWER. Thank you Dr. Albert J. Bernstein.

5 comments about Clinical Handbook of Psychological Disorders: A Step-by-Step Treatment Manual, Second Edition.
  1. I am currently using this book as a supplemental text for a course in Psychopathology I am taking at Cleveland State University.

The explanations of the various disorders are sometimes dense for the beginning graduate student, yet there is much to learn as each chapter not only discusses the etiology, but also various treatment approaches for each illness.

Would I recommend this book? Depends on what kind of student you are. If you are the type who is interested in learning only what is necessary to get through a course, this book will bore you. But if you are looking for a resource that will take you deeper, and be useful to you long after you leave grad school, then I would invest the money. Having a well-stocked professional library is essential to good practice. This book should be on that is on your shelf.

  2. The science moves slowly. Unfourtunately, some chapters are based in weak evidence.

  3. it was new as promised and delivered sooner than expected... this person is honest and does good business

  4. It is a great book. I t is easy to read and user friendly. I am a new graduate student and I wish all my books were as straight foward and easy to understand as the Clinical Handbook of Psychological Disorders.

  5. This text offers an overview of various cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) techniques for a variety of psychological disorders. Relevant research and case studies are included. Etiological models, trouble shooting and therapy rationale are discussed. I enjoyed this book and found it very helpful.

5 comments about The Linden Method: The Anxiety Disorder, Panic Attacks & Phobias Elimination Solution.
  1. I suffered from Panic Disorder for more than 10 years. Every GP i saw told me i would never be cured and offered me medication to keep my anxiety under control. Thankfully I never accepted the drugs. When i was at the end of my tether feeling totally worthless and helpless, i found The Linden Method. I bought it, thinking i was maybe being conned as i was at my lowest ebb. I have to say i cried when i first started to read the manual. And the Panic Attack Eliminator was like an epiphany. The Linden Method is honest, safe and has a real understanding of how panic can control your life. The after sales support is also superb.

I am not totally cured, but i know this is mostly down to me. The Method itself is sound, and if it doesn't completely cure you, I'm sure it will at the very least make your panic disorder much more manageable.

    Very strongly recommended.

  2. I did not get to read this book because it was written entirely in Spanish. Therefore, I sent it back. I was upset to realize that Amazon.Com did not reimburse me for the shipping costs, since it was not my fault that I had to return this book. I was out almost $20. This was my first purchase through Amazon.Com and also my last.

  3. The Linden Method: The Anxiety Disorder, Panic Attacks & Phobias Elimination Solution is an interesting book. It gives practical advise and the 9 pillars are very good CBT techniques. What I dislike about the book and Mr. Linden is the rest of the content. For example, one of the 9 pillars is to erase all memories of your condition, yet Mr. Linden devotes almost half of the book to his prior condition! Then he starts to play doctor without any qualifications. Chamomile tea while weaning off prescribed medications? Electronics could be creating anxiety but do not quit smoking? I am skeptical of anyone who directs you to a web site to purchase his products.

He also gives advice on how to beat PTSD and OCD yet he also really has not had any significant trauma in his life. I would like to see how he would handle real trauma. Given his past history, I am willing to bet he would be taking benzos like they were candy.

  4. Thats the Linden Method. Is just face it. I just saved you $177.00 First let me tell you about myself. I have panic disorder with agoraphobia and have tried two psychologists (at home) programs such as E.F.T, The Linden Method, Brain Sync, Attacking Anxiety and Depression, Zen Mind For Beginners, The Worlds First Digital Drug. Not to mention countless teas and pills such as Seredyn. None worked. Out of all of these miracles the worst by far was The Linden Method. If you have no idea what anxiety is and have no idea why your heart is pounding 1000 miles an hour then do reasearch online and save yourself $177.00

This guy tells you his story, then tells you to get over it and his secret is the funniest part of all. I almost died when I heard it. The people who have better results than me may have a better support system or a lifestyle that forces them to get out more. Im surprised this gets so much praise because its nothing special. To let you in on a little secret, there no miracle cure for anxiety or agoraphobia. You have to deal with it head on and thats what this tells you. Why do I continue using programs, you may ask? I more or less look for coping skills in programs and not so much that the program will make me anxiety free. It all comes down to how bad do you want it and a lot of hard work and all these miracle programs do is give you information freely availble on the internet. DONT BUY IT!
