3 comments about Lucinda Bassett's Attacking Anxiety & Depression Cd DVD.
  1. Lucinda Bassette's Program is quite impressive. Bassett is the CEO of the Midwest Center for Stress and Anxiety. She speaks often of her own health situation which prompted the book and she does have guidance from other experts. If you are ordering the set from the company, it varies with cassettes, DVDs, CDs, or Videos. So, if you purchase an item from a seller on Amazon, know what you are getting. The sessions include;

Lesson 1: Symptoms, Causes and Fears
Lesson 2: Six Steps That will Put a Stop to Anxiety Attacks
Lesson 3: Self-Talk, Key to Healthy Esteem
Lesson 4: Expectations, Expect Less & Get More

Lesson 5: Eat & Diet to Rid Yourself of Anxiety & Depression
Lesson 6: Stop Being Angry & Control Your Mood Swings
Lesson 7: Assertive Behavior, Speak Confidently and Gain Respect
Lesson 8: Put An End to What If Thinking
Lesson 9: Get Off the Guilt & Worry Treadmill
Lesson 10: How To Stop Obsessive, Scary Thoughts

Lesson 11: Anx & Dep, The Truth About Medication and Alcohol
Lesson 12: The Courage to Change
Lesson 13: Time Management 12 Steps Toward a Balanced Life
Lesson 14: How To Keep Stress From Becoming Anxiety
Lesson 15: Getting Beyond a Growth Spurt.
    Relaxation CD

Each CD has average 20 minutes of Objectives; about 30 min of Group Session and few minutes on Summary.

The Book is very helpful with plenty of text and study guides, insightful information into what lurks behind depression and anxiety. This program will take some comittment, as one didn't get anxiety and depression overnight, the healing will not be overnight.

There are cards that you can carry with you for extra coaching. Many times she does allow patients to speak and sometime it may not be all for you to listen, but these are examples that may always fit someone.

There is a program by Lucinda Bassett that does cover just the ANXIETY if you feel that is something you need to focus on.

I have listened to this as an aid for a few people, and I am impressed by the text and her entire program. ....MzRizz

  2. My own personal observations about this program are:

    *It's worth the price
    *It really works
*It can change your live, as it has changed mine.

I had panic attacks and anxiety in my 20's and bought the tape version of this program in the late 90s. I used it to cure my panic attacks, and learn how to calm anxiety.

A lot of the tips could also be used for depression or anger. In fact, there are individual sections on anger and depression.

I gave my program to a friend after I was done with it, and he enjoyed it, too. It's a really good way to deal with your emotional and social needs, if you have anxiety, depression, or anger, and help someone out when you have outgrown the program yourself.

I've been thinking about buying a copy again, because it seems like it's time to brush up on the essentials. But just looking at the program headers, I can visualize what she said, and I almost don't need to.

No complaints here, it's helped me about 100% through my life, and I'm glad to have been of help to someone else.

  3. I found this program to be extremely helpful. Alot of great information. Covers everything from eating correctly, dealing with obsessive scary thoughts, cognitive-behavioral therapy techniques, and dealing with guilt among many other topics. The midwest center also has a free web sites where you can post messages and get helpful hints from others going through the program at www.stresscenter.com. I can't say enough about this program. It really changed my life.

5 comments about The Anxiety & Phobia Workbook: A Step-by-Step Program for Curing Yourself of Extreme Anxiety, Panic Attacks, and Phobias.
  1. This book is pretty good except he has me doing tons of stuff to get well. Walk an hour a day, eat better, mediatation, autogenics, downtime, massive vacations, and the list goes on. Come on who has the time to do all that and work and raise a family. Who has the money to take long restful vacations. Certainly not me after paying for the doctor and the SSRI. Preacher wants me to read the Bible through every year, husband wants me to work full time, therapist wants me to utilize this book to the max, mother wants me to take her places, and now this author has me doing tons of stuff. So I give it only 3 stars.

  2. This book along with Rising Above Fear: Healing Phobias Panic and Extreme Anxiety are my favorites of the genre. Both stress behavior modification and have useful common sense advice and tips that work. Highly Recommended!

  3. Super fast delivery. Bought it on Thursday morning had it by Saturday.

    Thanks.

  4. For anyone with Anxiety problems this is a good reference book, and needs to be consulted regularly. One needs self-discipline to do the exercises, but with perseverence they do work, and the meditation section is excellent. It presents a practical approach to problems many of us have.

  5. I found this book to be easy to read and extremely helpful. After one read-through, I ripped out the pages I wanted to refer to on a regular basis: deep-breathing techniques, peaceful scene visualizations, lists of positive affirmations, among others. I read through these each morning and night. This book, coupled with daily exercise, meditation, good nutrition, and "me" time, has made a vast difference in my life.

  2. The author generously shares here of his experiences as a clinical hypnotist. As a practitioner myself, I see this book foremost as a resource for those of us in the field, although there is a lot for the general public here too. What I found most interesting was his take on the relationship between evolutionary patterns and weight management and why age/gender has to be taken into account.

5 comments about Don't Forget To Look Up : A Christian's Guide to Overcoming Anxiety and Panic Attacks.
  1. I am so glad people can share their experiences with others when they go through something so traumatic. I loved the scriptures I received from the book, I have been searching for scriptures that would help me.( is it not amazing how GOD sends us what we need;-)) Noone can understand what Panic and anxiety is all about until they themselves live the nightmare. Angela lived it, she overcame it, and she shared it with others. That is the whole purpose in life, to live, learn and share with others. Thank you so much, for all the information I received, and for the care that you put into the book. I plan to get my whole family to read this book because it takes understanding something to be able to help someone. GOD will surely bless you in every way, through reading this book.

  2. This book is part self-help, and part autobiography. You won't really find a lot of specific ways to help overcome anxiety attacks here. Most of the techniques are very general in nature, and this book is in no way an exhaustive review of how to treat anxiety or panic attacks.

Still, the book is very inspirational, and any Christian that suffers from anxiety and panic attacks will find it worth reading. Its main virture is really its inspiration though, rather than any specific methods for combatting anxiety.

I found one of the chapters, on Bible verses that relate to anxiety and strength, to be the most helpful. The book is a quick read. You should be able to finish it in 1-2 sittings.

Definitely inspirational, and worth your reading time. There aren't many books available on Christian spirituality and conquering anxiety. If you aren't Christian, and have no interest in becoming Christian, this book won't really help you much. If you are, and you suffer from anxiety, definitely check it out.

  3. Truly inspirational ! I am so glad a christian has spoke up . Too many people think its a mental persons illness and just dont understand it . I think Angela Brittian puts another face on this treatable illness . Were not crazy just suffers of a painful nervous condition . I recommend this book to anyone looking for comfort and help to overcome . The bible scriptures are such a help and comfort .

  4. The book starts out great but then after the pages of ex husband slating and soppy life information I was left wondering whether this book was there to help people or a biography of the author's life? I have found books written by professionals a lot more helpful!

  5. I was hoping for more in depth Bible verses and such. Not very scriptural.

2 comments about Dancing with Fear: Controlling Stress and Creating a Life Beyond Panic and Anxiety.
  1. Reviewed by April Sullivan for Reader Views (09/07)

Anxiety, stress and fear are emotions we all feel at one time or another. A test, a certain work assignment, or a near miss at the red light, can cause us to feel this way. But what if you felt this way all the time? Approximately thirty seven million Americans suffer from severe anxiety disorders and live with constant worry and fear.

"Dancing with Fear" is an in-depth look at anxiety disorders and the process for recovery. Dr. Foxman writes from the perspective of a psychologist as well as the perspective of one who has lived with an anxiety disorder. This is not a new book. Originally written in 1996, the 2007 edition is an updated version with new information from recent brain research as well as a more aesthetic layout that highlights exercises and self-help skills.

I found the book to be exceptionally well organized. Chapters included topics such as "What is Anxiety?", "How Anxiety Develops", "Facing Your Fears and Phobias", "Spirituality and Anxiety", and "Should You Take Medication for Anxiety - Or Not?" Extremely useful information written in a plain and easy to read format.

This book is intended for those who suffer from anxiety disorders, their family members, and the mental health professionals who treat them. As a family member of someone with an anxiety disorder, I found "Dancing with Fear" very helpful in my understanding of anxiety disorders, their causes, and solutions for recovery. Talking to my husband about his anxiety is not easy. Usually when the topic comes up, it is during an anxious moment, when he is not at his most calm or rational. By reading "Dancing with Fear", discussing his anxiety became easier. As I read the book, we would discuss the chapters each evening before bed. This was a calm time, and we were able to discuss my husband's anxiety in a non-threatening way. We practiced the breathing exercises together and talked about his symptoms and strategies for recovery.

I would recommend "Dancing with Fear" to anyone interested in the topic of anxiety for personal or academic reasons. Dr. Foxman is very knowledgeable about the subject and as is stated on the cover "This book provides information on relieving anxiety and replacing fear with peace, optimism, and joy." Who could ask for more?

  2. Dr. Foxman certainly did his homework. Dancing with Fear is one of the most thorough, comprehensive, and practical books about anxiety that I have ever read. Anyone suffering from anxiety disorders in their life can greatly benefit from this book. Highly recommended.

5 comments about Self-Coaching: How to Heal Anxiety and Depression.
  1. I am not sure of how I came across this book, though I think it was an Amazon recommendation. It is indeed fascinating and I think a worthwhile read for anyone. It is premised upon the author's contention that ". . . anxiety and depression are merely habits--and all habits can be broken". In fact, Joseph J. Luciani's suggestions and program could be effectively applied to any life situation from anxiety and depression to improving your golf swing.

While Luciani's approach, at first blush, seems to have a lot in common with Albert Ellis's "cognitive therapy", it is significiantly different. Luciani is really much more oriented toward self-delivered life coaching through what he dubs "self-talk".

On its face, the approach is logical and, in fact, what most of us do normally when we feel in control of the situation. Luciani's point is that it is in those situations where we don't feel in control that self-talk is most important - and, frankly, he seems to have a point.

Luciani is certainly devoted to what he believes. He maintains a web site in support of the book where he freely dispenses advice (with appropriate disclaimers), but without trying to sell anything. Quite a guy and a very different approach to self-promotion.

Depressed, anxious or not, this is a very interesting book and worthy of your attention.

    Jerry

  2. Suffering from severe depression is immobilizing, and only you can tell what you really need. The important thing is to get help and address it - just hoping for it to get better is a dangerous game. For me the thinking with this book was that it wouldn't hurt to try. I find the book's emphasis on the present versus what happened long ago helpful, but others may want to work through some old things. It has a definite focus on now, getting through the day, and living through some rough and debilitating emotional strongholds. Personally I prefer the down to earth and occasionally in your face tone to some of the "softer" depression books I've read. Having very practical and well-outlined tools to confront my depression/anxiety has been beneficial to me - and I also like the way the author reframes emotion based on context (anger, wanting to control, etc) to help the reader understand the roots of the negative feelings. Overall, really great book - main improvement would be having spiritual and Biblical helps as well.

  3. I suffered from Generalized Anxiety Disorder ("the worry disease") with underlying depression which fuels the worry because i was convinced that I couldn't handle life if something bad happened. Everyone has an internal dialogue going on in their head all day long and the reason why people are anxious or depressed is they have thoughts about something scary or sad all day long. This book shows what fuels those thoughts (insecurity and eroded self-trust) and how to change your child-reflex (how you react to situations that make you anxious and depressed) and this isn't written by someone who just got out of college. Dr. Luciani has had years of experience and knows what he is talking about. And if you don't understand something he is more than happy to answer your questions personally in his "Ask Dr. Joe" forum on his website www.self-coaching.net

  4. I have social phobia and I've been on a hunt for the past few years for a natural treatment. I've tried herbs and supplements and nothing has worked. The last straw came when the supposed miracle supplement for anxiety-sufferers (magnesium) did nothing for me. Having read this book once before and not thinking anything of it, I decided I had no choice so I reread the book. I've learned that although the ideas in this book are great aids, they just won't work for someone in my position.

Self-coaching is simple. You've lived for years with negative thoughts that cause your anxiety. All you have to do is change them. First, you must seperate your thoughts into fact or fiction. Most often, you'll find that your anxious thoughts are silly. Then you must change your thoughts into something positive. This will change your mood completely. People with anxiety problems live in their mind rather than living in the moment. They process and think and process and think until their anxiety becomes hellish.

Self-coaching will and does work. Some may find it hard to believe but if you truly think about it, your anxiety is all in your mind. If you're having an anxious thought and you put on some music and sing along, you eventually lose that anxious thought because you're living in the moment. People with general anxiety will find the ideas in this book to be helpful.

Unfortunately, for someone like me who gets anxious "in the moment", self-coaching will not work. I get extremely anxious around other people. Whereas self-coaching may help when you're walking through a busy mall or anticipating a public speech, it doesn't work when, say, someone comes up to you and begins talking to you. Self-coaching does help when you're anticipating something anxious but it certainly doesn't work when something anxiety-worthy comes out of the blue.

I will use self-coaching in addition to medication. I do think this book is well written, motivating, and easy to understand but, unfortunately, it won't work for everyone.

  5. I read this book trying to understand some of the reasons I have so much fear in certain situations and, hopefully to overcome it. Did it work? Well, yes and no.

I read something profound in this book that told me I was the producer of anxiety. That it wasn't an illness that came and attacked me as a virus does, but that I generate it with my thoughts, which in turns produces imbalanced chemistry within my system. This clicked with me on so many levels and just knowing that helped me. It gave me encouragement.

There were some other really great insights in this book also. It's very well written and gives the reader a lot of hope that better days will come if you try hard enough. And I believe Dr. Luciani when he says it.

However, I am uncertain that there is a true "heart" to this book. If I had to summarize the main point of this book it would be this: You have the power to talk yourself and motivate yourself out of anxiety with the right thought patterns. Is the advice deep enough for a real meaningful change? I think it has the potential to be. Automatic negative thoughts are a huge problem for those of insecurity an low self-confidence, so the advice really is effective here.

Is this book helpful to those who are struggling with anxiety and depression? I would say emphatically "yes" and you should really read it. There is only good to be gotten from it. Will it be the ultimate solution to abolishing your severe anxiety/depression? I doubt it. But it could a great stepping stone to doing so.

I would give this book three and a half stars if I could - but since it only lets me use whole stars, I will tip the scale over to four. My summation of the book is this: It really is a worthwhile read with some effective advice.

  1. This book is a most soulfully interwoven journey the dives deeply into the adventure of self-exploration. It reflects all of life's internal issues on multiple levels and is cram packed with plenty of real substance. A very courageous book to steps out of the norm and yet is delivered in the most delightful way. It's brilliant!

This writer Susan truly has an amazing gift!

    Linda Post

  2. This is an extremely amazing book. It takes you on a very deep journey of love and life. Very inspirational. Susan did a wonderful job on this. Thank you.

  3. What a journey! A thrill ride to other worlds- your world? Our guide, Susan, fillets her true-self for all to feast as she allows us to experience her emotion, vulnerability, and STRENGTH. This book opened my mind, engaged my imagination, and gave me hope... What a gem!

  4. I am reading this book for the third time. It is SO packed with incredible insights and usable thought processes I was folding most every page so I could go back for reference. It was very well received at our womens' health fair in clinic. Kalior is my new favorite author, I have read all 4 of her books. Some fantasy, all life enriching.

  5. This book is like a guide through one's own personal reality into the subconscious and beyond into hidden worlds, like dreams, and many other altered states. Fascinating concepts on time and no time, reincarnation, karma, life choices, and even death and spirits. This book is above and beyond because it frees one to open their minds to encompass the scope of life beyond what we understand without adhering to any particular belief system. It is kind of like the more you open, the richer your life becomes. The whole book gives you an 'ah hah!' kind of feeling, a sense of constantly being enlightened. A good book to read over and over.

5 comments about Panic and Anxiety Disorder: 121 Tips, Real-life Advice, Resources & More, Second Edition.
  1. I'd heard about Linda's upcoming tips book on Panic and Anxiety Disorder, but wasn't really interested in reading it, mainly because it was a "tips" book; I've seen those booklets in the check-out line, and always considered them vague and rather gimmicky. So, when I first picked up "Panic and Anxiety Disorder, 121 Tips, Real-life Advice, Resources & More", not only was I surprised by its book-like appearance, I was also drawn to its calm, down-to-earth approach to self-help. Yes, there are numbered tips, but as I read, I realized this wasn't implicitly for someone coping with anxiety disorders; Linda has written to everybody. Her tips, while pinpointing individual aspects of anxiety, actually address the very simple, basic, moment-by-moment steps to follow in order to successfully survive just about any stressful inner conflict. From digging in the earth to truly relearning the art of breathing, Linda's guidance is straightforward and simultaneously profound. Not leaving any stone unturned, Linda has dedicated an entire chapter to folks who've found themselves in the challenging role of support, and included numerous sources of additional literature and information.

Linda Manassee Buell has written this book with the compassion and personal landscape of someone who's lived in the cave of fear, and who's triumphantly emerged into the sunshine.

  2. This book is a valuable addition to the others on the subject. Written in a direct and compassionate voice, it provides great insight and assistance to anyone connected to this disorder. I myself do not suffer from it; however, I'm close to a number of people who do. This book is a tremendous help to those of us who must learn to cope with a loved one who has a panic/anxiety disorder. And it provides an excellent tool to begin safely discussing the topic with that loved one. Lastly, I've had the privilege to meet the author on a couple occasions and talk about the issue -- she is truly knowledgeable, sensitive, and passionate about it.

  3. Having personal experience with an anxiety disorder, I found Linda's book to have practical, reassuring information that I have been searching for for a long time. No one can really understand an anxiety disorder unless they have first-hand knowledge of it. The author speaks from her heart. Many of the mental-health professionals I have spoken to do not have this level of insight.

  4. Having a close family member recently diagnosed with Panic Anxiety Disorder, I found the book extremely useful in both understanding the illness and knowing how to support this person. The author provides easy-to-understand details about the illness and solid ways of supporting loved-ones. Now, I feel like I can talk to my family member and no longer have to side-step the discussion. A must-read for anyone who has loved ones with this condition.

  5. 'This is a little book.......filled with
amazing tips....in order to overcome anxiety
and panic attacks....I am majoring in Clinical
Psychology at the University.....and I am too

5 comments about Anxiety & Panic Attacks: Their Cause and Cure.
  1. This book does better than average at explaining the causes of panic attacks and gives very good tips on how to ease the pain and discomfort of panic attacks.

  2. I got this book as a gift from my sister after trying therapy and medication. Forget that. I did exactly what this book recommended and have not had any problems in over ten years. I gave my copy away and have purchased many more over the years to pass on to folks I knew who were having issues with panic attacks. Excellent book by a regular person who can relate. I always have one on hand to give away.

  3. This is a great book and if you really do the exercises, you can dramatically change your life. Just keep at it every day and don't give up! I first read this book over twenty years ago and I buy them occasionally now to give to someone who struggles with severe panic. I strongly recommend it.

  4. I have used the book personally and I have given copies of this book to several friends who have panic and anxiety attacks and they have used the techniques successfully.

Very easy to read and apply. Expect results within a week.

  5. Robert Handly's book is easily one of the most helpful books I have experienced. The life lesson being taught is much greater than how to defeat fear and panic; it highlights the importance of self-image, self-confidence and positive attitude. This is no cliche'-Handly shares this life changing information in a way that only a person having first-hand experience with panic can. The author offers what seems to be an outrageous idea- panic disorder was the best thing to ever happen to him!
Fifteen years ago, I suffered from panic, fear and depression. Just a weekend read of this book started me on a journey of self-discovery. I have enjoyed the full recovery that Handly said was possible; my outlook on life and my world view have transformed into a much more beautiful vista. I now agree...panic disorder was the pivotal event in my life that forced me to change the polarity of my negative outlook.
Read this book and be confident that it may just change your life.
