5 comments about Be the Person You Want to Be: Harness the Power of Neuro-Linguistic Programming to Reach Your Potential.
  1. I've read them all, and this one really delivers. I understood what he had to say, it all applied to my everyday life, and I just felt good about it all as a result of reading this book. If you're wanting to know about NLP, this is the book. If you're already into NLP and want people around you to know what you're doing, this is the book too -- it will save you a lot of efforts down the road!

  2. When seperated from all the chaff, Emerick's ideas are intriguing. The problem with this book is the chaff. On his way to (eventually) conveying his message, Emerick manages to bore and irritate the reader with page after page of empty and useless elaboration of a point that he has already made. I found myself saying "enough already!" as I skimmed in search of the next bit of substance. Ironic for a book about communication, eh?

  3. First, this book is great. It gives step by step procedures that really work. I've made a lot of money and increased my general happiness (and others around me) because of what the book taught me. My advice: read it with an open mind and re-read it every so often.

  4. Most NLP books are unreadable.

NLP is supposed to be about the study of excellent human performance, and how to model it. However, most NLP books get caught up in issues like hypnosis and therapy, and are written like psychiatric textbooks: bore, snore.

Most NLP "poobahs" thumb their nose at Anthony Robbins; let's face it, his works are popular because they're about self-improvement and are east to read. This book by John Emerick is along the same vein, but with more specific how-tos, and less cheerleading, than the Tony Robbins books.

Rather than spend hundreds of dollars on NLP and NLP-related books looking for a guide for specific self-improvement, buy this one.

  5. This has got be one of the worst books I've read. Yes, even worse than those psychology books on tests and measurements that you took in university ... and those were pretty bad.

This book was obviously written to fill pages and make it look substantial (the only thing substantial about it is it's price).

It's opaque and the subject matter, which should be exciting, is agonizingly painful to grasp. Listen, you have to have a good command of the english language to communicate effectively in the written word ... especially in the written word. Repetition and recycling a limited vocabulary in annoying and irritating. What makes every turkey think they are qualified to write just because they have taken a few courses? Hey, if it was that easy, getting your jouralism degree could be done in an afternoon. Duh.

My recommendation to all of you that are considering this book is: A) save you money ... and more important, your time. B) You're better off to re-read 'using your brain .. for a change' by Richad Bandler. C) Wait for another book on NLP.

3 comments about Brilliant Nlp: What the Most Successful People Know, Say & Do.
  1. This book is a good resource for anyone curious about what NLP is and some of the tools available in NLP. Very descriptive and ease to read.

  2. Loaded with great information on NLP. A must have for anyone looking to increase their knowledge of NLP.

  3. A slim book, yet packed with basic information about NLP - neurolinguistic programming. A reader needn't be overly familiar with psychology to easily follow the logistics of this 'How To' book.

On the down-side, some of the information was handled far too lightly to be of much practical use unless a reader went on to pursue NLP at a higher, more in-depth level. The phrase "easier said than done" occurred to me more than once, not due to unsound NLP principles but because of the introductory nature of this text.

For the £12.99 cover price, I would have expected more depth.

1 comments about Consult Yourself: The Nlp Guide to Being a Management Consultant.
  1. I reviewed this book for the 7EQ.com newsletter. Here is what I wrote: Whether you are working as a consultant or are planning to become one, this book is for you! It really covers all aspects of what it means to be a consultant. Maybe that's why this book ended being 375 pages thnk, in stead of the initially announced 250 pages. Carol Harris knows what she is talking about: she has been an independent consultant for the last 15 years and wrote 4 other books. The first and second chapter discusses the kind of competencies and attitudes a consultant needs. Chapters 3 to 6 discuss what is means to set up as an independent consultant, how to promote yourself etc (maybe you conclude from these chapters that you would be better of to be working for one of the consultancy agencies). The rest of the book teaches you skills related to practical aspects of being a consultant, such as self-management, helping other to develop, writing skills, etc. In short in this book you'll find what a consultant needs to demonstrate in order to be successful. Of course, I cant resist mentioning that for other areas of live, my book "7 steps to emotional intelligence" will be complementary!

4 comments about Dyslexia: Seeing Spells Achieving: Improve your spelling, reading, memory, dyslexic symptoms, in any language, by using your brain the way nature intended, through NLP and visualisation.
  1. This little book explains in a very simple, easy way, how to learn to spell by visualising words. The exercises are well thought out, and lead naturally from one to another. It is fun to work through and a fantastic resource. I have helped several children to go from dreading spelling, and believing that they can't spell, to loving it and spelling words backwards in no time at all! It is incredible!

  2. The book is reviewed in this month's BDA magazine by leading learning difficulties expert Bernadette McLean from the Helen Arkell Centre.

"Seeing Spells Achieving has been written for those who struggle with words, and those who support them, such as parents or teachers. The writers claim that 100% of dyslexics do not use visualisation to see words. The book teaches visualisation which is a skill that is useful not only for spelling, but also for comprehension. Hickmott and Bendefy are both qualified in Neurolinguistic Programming. Dyslexia specialists have usually heard of the NLP spelling method which is based on how good spellers spell. This method is clearly explained and is a more efficient way of learning spelling than a laborious working through "the minefield of rules and counter rules" of the English language. Exercises to develop visual memory start with objects and then move on to individual words and text. These exercises are well structured and emphasise the same need for practice that any new skill requires before it becomes second nature. The book does more than work on visualisation skills. It uses techniques from NLP to help learners replace self-limiting beliefs with more positive thoughts. Exercises help learners to implement change and to become "unstuck" from feelings of failure and worthlessness about their previous learning. "Seeing Spells Achieving" is suitable for those who support dyslexics because its explanations are much more accessible than its title would indicate. It is particularly appropriate for use with those dyslexics who believe that they will never be able to spell".

  3. As a dyslexia who is not a good speller I was happy to get this book. Total wast of money. No help at all.

  4. I'm thirty-one years old and I have looked for ways of improving disadvantages at spelling and reading for years. I've found that this book gives me the mojo. For example, to test the techniques, I'd learned 190 of 205 words from GRE wordlist in two weeks. I'm not emblishing. This will help any child who cannot see the words they need to learn in their minds. For instances, like the word abnegation or apropos. I wish my parents had this book when I was in the third grade. It is so simple!
PS It was also very kind of the authors to be willing to talk to parents or students over the phone or by way of email about this great work on visualization.
