5 comments about Personality Selling : Using NLP and the Enneagram to Understand People and How They Are Influenced.
  1. It is clear that Valentino has fluid experience with NLP in the real word. The distinctions he makes can only come from practical application. Valuable insight brought out in a well written book.

  2. If you want NLP to make practical sense and apply it then this book is a must. The author clearly has an in depth grasp of NLP, the Enneagram and selling. Filled with practical examples, tips for influencing all personality types, and how to tie different psychological models together, this book is a must for everyone whether in sales or just trying to understand and get along with the people in your life.

  3. If you have already read books on NLP and selling, you won't get anything new out of it. It gets three stars because it introduces the enneagram and correlates the meta-programs to it, and that's something quite interesting.

  4. I just took a 3 week intensive Practitioner's Certification training course in California with Robert Dilts and I found this book to be really helpful with "people reading". I found some information we really didn't have time to go into in CA in this book. It is written cleanly and clearly on subjects that can be complex. I recommend it to anyone studying NLP for any reason.

  5. One of the best books that I read on Selling and NLP. However, it is of advantage to have some idea about NLP and the Enneagram. But that's what the title already presupposes, anyway

2 comments about Nlp Coaching Cards.
  1. The NLP coaching cards provide a catalog of useful phrases designed as a deck of cards to make learning easy. I've gone through the cards in order and I've played solitaire with them, examining the phrases as I play the cards. There's enough of an example in each to trigger my own imagination, and it's easy to fit the phrases with particular situations I've encountered. It also begins to get easier to access them when a situation calls for one or more.

  2. i work in a histopathology lab, its great that now and then when i have a minute or two i slide my hand into my lab coat pocket and pick a card 2 read ... its fun 2 ... my colleges are liking it 2 ... (though they should get their own) :)

3 comments about User's Manual for the Brain, Vol. II: Mastering Systemic NLP.
  1. This is the long-awaited follow-on to "User's Manual For The Brain", and it is certainly worth the wait! I've had the great fortune to take the Practitioner course based on Volume I and the Master Practitioner course based on Volume II. And now I have the second book!

Dr. Bodenhamer and Dr. Hall have written many books together over the years. This is their best yet. It covers Mind-Lines, Meta-Programs, Meta-States and all of the other models and extensions of NLP that have been incorporated into Neuro-Semantics.

  2. From the editor of NLPWeekly Magazine:

I've read the "User's manual for the brain" quite a few years ago. I had to save money in order to buy it, but it was worth it.

Now, with the second book, I didn't even think about it, I immediately ordered it when it was published.

Michael Hall and Bob Bodenhamer know what it is like to be clueless about personal excellence, and without risking the quality of their writing, without mixing fluff (like Robbins) or self importance stories (like Bandler), they craft a well written instruction book.

Michael wrote numerous books, and I'm a proud owner of most of them. His writing style is clear, well thought and worthy of every penny you spend on his books.

This book is a must have for both newbies and NLP professionals.

    Shlomo Vaknin, C.Ht
    NLPWeekly Magazine

  3. If you have this book and the vol. I then you've got the least amount of book to cover pretty much the whole spectrum of NLP in it's most up-to-date/most effective form (Meta-States).

I'm a Michael Hall-Bob Bodenhamer disciple because the Meta-States Model Fixes many of the problems with the "'sub'modalities" patterns. The qualities of an thought are on a HIGHER Logical level and NOT lower, hence META-modalities!

Man, with vol. I and II you got all the most common aspects of NLP plus the extended Meta-Model, extended Meta-Programs, Complete Mindlines(Sleight of Mouth) patterns in this one, and chapters about a 'Unified Field' of NLP that ties it all together, to help it all crystallize and make sense.

I think that this should be required reading for every human on the planet. Wow! Just like if everyone had a Phd., the stakes would be raised, Mos definitely!

3 comments about Coaching with NLP: How to Be a Master Coach.
  1. A lot of grids and methodology, usefull key-points and questions... The NLP techniques are poor and over-simplified in the book, but if you are already trained in NLP, you'll find a usefull guide on how to use your knowledge in Coaching.

  2. Excellent resource for anyone practicing NLP. The book is setup in logical and useable manner and covers a very good set of NLP tools, with detailed explanations.

In the beginning, NLP tools are introduced and explained... and later very detailed explanations of the methodology and use of NLP techniques for all levels of understanding, from NLP beginners to NLP experts.

  3. If you are looking for a good basic book on this topic, this one is fine. It offers good introductory information about coaching in general and NLP. It's easy reading and offers some excellent resources at the end (over 40 pages of resources). About half of the book is on Coaching and the other half is about NLP. If, on the other hand, you are looking for something more sophisticated on the topic, this book is a little light. A better choice would be Ian McDermott's/Wendy Jago's The NLP Coach. It's not as easy to read, but it's much more comprehensive and useful to understand how to use NLP in coaching. I also think even the book "NLP for Dummies" is better.

3 comments about Magic of NLP Demystified: A Pragmatic Guide to Communication & Change (Positive Change Guides).
  1. This is a book for those wishing a first introduction to the concepts and applications of Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP). It is not technical and also not for the advanced NLP student. Its target audience is for those across many professions who would like to learn more about effective communication with others. Informal and entertaining, valuable to managers, sales people, consultants, parents, educators, and even therapists as a first-time introduction. Published in 1992, it contains the important basics of the field, but does not have recent developments.

  2. Like most magic tricks, once you learn the secret...it's not as impressive. This book definitely peels back the magic curtain of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) in a good way. The book presents a logical progression through the basics of NLP which is great as an introduction or as a comprehensive review for a more experienced practitioner.

The Magic of NLP Demystified is filled with content that is well organized. Bandler and Grinder, co-creators of NLP, presented much of their material through books that were transcripts of seminars. These books, including Frogs Into Princess and Trance-Formations: Neuro-Linguistic Programming and the Structure of Hypnosis, provide a good context for the use of NLP patterns while The Magic of NLP Demystified provides a clear map of the content of the basic elements of NLP.

  3. Engaging from the start - clearly expresses concepts and encourages further investigation of ideas. The book doesn't assume knowledge and doesn't patronise readers either. The ideas flow logically and build upon each other. The chapters are a good length, allowing bite size reading if desired. A slim volume which packs in a lot of information concisely and elegantly. I found it leaving me wanting to know more.

4 comments about NLP Workbook: A Practical Guide to Achieving the Results You Want.
  1. An update on the recent development on NLP. This book covers many up-to-date ideas on NLP. However this book provides very little detials on how to make use of those ideas/techniques to allow this book be regarded as a useful self-help resource.

  2. As an NLP trainer I found this book to be a magnificent read for people new to the art of NLP. Its clarity and simplicity of the techniques, and the exercises are great.

Joseph O'Connor has definately used his knowledge of NLP to assist people of all ages.

    A definate read.

  3. Joseph Oconnor is brilliant. His writing is clear, he gets across the ideas and basic absolute fundamental essentials of NLP that many other books take too long or use too complex descriptions are simply aren't clear. Oconnor's writing, and complete understanding of NLP for that matter, is so incredibly well communicated. If NLP is the deep structure to become communicated to the reader through the surface structure of the book, Oconnor uses no generalizations, deletions, nor distortions! Finally a clear NLP book that's fairly advanced. 'Disclaimer": I'm "fairly" new -- 3 years into - to NLP and have been trying to connect with the "Fathers" of it -- bandler, grinder, and a bunch of other gurus, and I got bits and pieces from all those works, but oconnor seems to neatly tie it all together with tremendously lucid writing.

  4. Joseph has written other books that are more prose, analogy and examples, but this is the book to buy if preparing for an NLP certification. This workbook has breadth and depth covering the entire NLP body of knowledge.

5 comments about Presenting Magically: Transforming Your Stage Presence with NLP.
  1. Some context: I've debated, acted in plays and done presentations in various forms all my life and won awards consistently. I've also read 100+ books on speaking/presenting/influencing such as influence by cialdini, art of rhetoric by aristotle, nlp books, dale carnegie.

However, this book is by far the best book i've ever read on presenting.

There are priceless ideas and exercises in here for
    1) Managing how you feel.
    2) Managing the audience's state i.e. how they feel.
    3) Keeping different types of people involved i.e. people with different representational systems (visual, kinesthetic, etc.) and different attitudes (why do this, how do we do this, etc.)
    4) A great structure for presentations.
    5) Energy Level
    6) Developing rapport with the audience.
    7) Going into a state which is ideal for presenting.
    8) Using open ended stories (open loops) to increase audience's curiosity etc.
    9) Reading the audience

Do read this book - it's a piece of art. And it'll definitely help you get much much better results and have more fun when presenting and interacting with people.

  2. This book was recommended to me by a friend and I shall be indebted to that person the rest of my life. As a professional presenter I constantly need to review my delivery techniques and look for ways to add impact for my audience. This book turned out to be an amazing assest in that regard.
I tried two techniques right after finishing the book and was amazed at their efficacy. I try to add one more during each presentation. If your serious about improving your ability to relate to groups (or individuals for that matter) buy and use this book. It is indeed magic.

  3. This is an excellent book. Probably the only one you'll need if you want to know about NLP and want to be a good presenter at the work or church. The book has plenty exercises and it is well written with just enough pictures, small chapters and deep subject with clear and concise explanation. I give it 5 stars, and I have read it many times and never get tired of reading it.

  4. Do not listen to naysayers. This book delivers what it promises. This book transends college text books and move you into the realm to really powerful presentation. If you are truly looking to improve your presentation skills, then get this book.

  5. This book is a tough read, but has some very valuable information. The front side of the book is laborious to read and doesn't share a lot of new insights into presenting. But, if you can get through the core of the book, the backside has some hidden gems. Maybe a second time through would bring the front of the book more into perspective. Overall, as American Idol Randy Jackson says, "It was just alright."

5 comments about Change Your Mind-And Keep the Change : Advanced NLP Submodalities Interventions.
  1. This book follows on from "Using Your Brain for a Change", a book based on Bandler's 1982 seminars. It's therefore a good idea to read "Using Your Brain..." before coming to this one so that you get the full benefit of the plot, so to speak.

Having said that, whilst the Andreas' willingly acknowledge their indebtedness to Bandler, this is very much their own book.

It includes plenty of information on subjects such as Timelines, the Swish pattern, eliciting criteria and submodalities - stuff that was relatively new and novel when it was first published, in 1987, but how does it look fourteen years later?
In my opinion it is still pretty relevant, and I'd expect that will have something to offer all but the most experienced NLPers, either in the sections on "life skills" or on the more directly therapy-oriented sections that deal with compulsions, destructive behaviour, etc.

One word of caution: This book is *not* presented in the same chatty style that characterises many of the Andreas' other books (including "Using Your Brain ..."). The authors explain the reason thus:

This book is more technological than most, because we know that detailed technology gets results, and that the "coldest" technology can be delivered with humanity and respect.

Ummmmm, yes, I guess so. I certainly wouldn't let this put me off buying the book.

  2. disclaimer: I studied with Steve Andreas when he was at the top of his form and I think it was the best general experience of NLP that I have experienced, perhaps with the one exception of Richard Bandler in a peak moment.

having said that: NLP must have the worst literaure ever generated by a discipline which imagines that it should be taken seriously.

This book is simply awful, not much more or less awful than every other NLP book out there. Whatever NLP is, it doesn't translate to the written word... maybe no more than Jimi Hendrix transcriptions translate Jimi Hendrix... this detritus, and that's all it should be labelled as, this compost of concept, has all of the impact that hearing Voodoo Child played on an insipid string synthesizer at half tempo in a bloodless shopping mall out in the midwest somewhere... only much less interesting...

  3. I consider this to be your typical run of the mill NLP book. It's solid in its approach, addresses the key pieces and is well written. But it doesn't stand out.

  4. If you are an advanced student of NLP (at least having completed a practitioner training) and wish to get a deeper and more practical understanding of using and interpreting time lines, the swish pattern, submodalities, and the internal-external meta program; then this book is definitely for you. It is written by two NLP leaders who put their vast practical knowledge on paper from which the rest of us can benefit. Specific applications such as Eliminating Compulsions, "The Last Straw" Threshold Pattern and Responding to Criticism are presented in detail. Given this book was written in 1987, many newer and more elegant techniques have been developed since. However Steve and Connirae Andreas provide us with a rich understanding of NLP basics that gives us greater insight as to why the newer techniques work, what we need to be aware of when using these techniques and how we can actually use these basic building blocks to develop our own approaches. A significant part of the book consists of transcripts of actual sessions. For me, this did not enhance my reading enjoyment; however it did provide clear descriptions as to how the techniques can be used in practice.

  5. Simple and easy to read, yet filled with very useful NLP stuffs. Good reading for both advance NLP learners and beginners in NLP. Recommended.

5 comments about Mindworks: An Introduction to Nlp: the Secrets of Your Mind Revealed.
  1. Given such a low cover price you might think this was a pretty cheap book - until you discover how poor quality it is, information and accuracy-wise.

For example, this is supposed to be an introduction to NLP, yet it makes no mention whatever of a key feature of NLP - the meta programs (mental filters). And whilst the authors do at least mention the meta model - another key concept in NLP - it gets far too little coverage (just 28 pages in a book 354 pages long).

On the subject of accuracy, the authors invent presuppositions that are not merely unknown in mainstream NLP but actual contrary to NLP thinking, such as:

Genuine NLP presupposition - "There is no such thing as failure, only feedback" (using the cybernetics definition of "feedback")

Mindworks pseudo-NLP presupposition - "You can turn failure into feedback"

How do you turn something INTO feedback if it already IS feedback?

The authors appear to be equally at a loss when it comes to simple matters of fact. For example, they baldly state that:

' "The map is not the territory" is an NLP presupposition that's taken from Noam Chomsky'

Oh really? So why does everyone else (correctly) attribute the epigram to Alfred Korzybski, creator of General Semantics?

To cut to the chase, this book is too long-winded, too inaccurate, and too poorly written to be worth even the original cover price.
    Definitely NOT recommended.

  2. This as an excellent intro and overview into the field of NLP. Linden has done a great job with this book, though it is a bit slow to get into, the wealth of information that it contains, is well worth the persaverance. It is a shame that it is out of print.

If you are looking for a good book to introduce you to NLP, I suggest this book (if you can find it), and O'Connor's Intro to NLP. Both are excellent choices, that together give a thorough overview.

  3. Anne Linden's Mindworks is a bit different than most NLP books I've read so far. For one thing, the book is highly organized, and reads as much like an encyclopedia as anything else. You won't find the author hop-scotching from one subject to the next or throwing things at you out of context. The book is well laid out, and is truly aimed at those with little to no previous knowledge of NLP. It helps you learn the basics from the ground up.

My only real complaint about the book is that so much is devoted to theory, and so little is devoted to practical implementation of NLP. You'll find far fewer "exercises" in this book than you will in other NLP volumes.

All in all, this book is a great place to start learning about NLP, and is an excellent reference on basic NLP concepts. If you want to put NLP to work for you in a practical manner though, you'll need to look elsewhere.

  4. This book is chapter after chapter of how NLP can be used in a persons life to better the way we communicate. Especially with ourselves. Nothing difficult in this book. It's all well explained so not to complicate things. Each chapter is an NLP journey. Such as >.. if someone tells you not to think of a cat chasing a mouse, we immediately think of a cat chasing a mouse. Read the book to see how Linden explains this.

  5. Everyone has the ability, says "Mindworks: An Introduction to NLP - The Secrets of Your Mind Revealed". It just needs to be unlocked and brought forward to the front of one's mind. NLP focuses on the concept that the human brain is a sort of computer, and that it can be programmed how one wants it to be - to bring the most out of one's thoughts. An intriguing and informative book from first page to last, "Mindworks: An Introduction to NLP - The Secrets of Your Mind Revealed" is highly recommended for community library psychology collections.

5 comments about Your Dreams... Let Reality Catch Up: NLP and Common Sense for Coaches, Managers and You.
  1. I highly recommend this book: the NLP exercises are laid out in a step by step format, making it a useful reference for NLP practicioners. "Live your Dreams" also provides an excellent overview of NLP for people who are not familiar with it. Throughout the book, questions are asked to stimulate the reader's reflection; this makes the book especially valuable for both individuals and trainers. In fact, I used it as a reference in a recent training I gave to coaches and I certainly plan to use it again!

  2. Live Your Dreams Let Reality Catch Up: NLP & Common Sense For Coaches, Managers, And You by certified management consultant and certified Neuro-Linguistic Programming trainer Roger Ellerton is a self-help guide to using NLP to improve one's communication, free oneself from the burden of past memories, achieve goals, and much more. Written both for individuals seeking to transform their lives and parents, coaches, and managers helping their charges unlock their full potential, Live Your Dreams Let Reality Catch Up is upbeat and positive-minded, offering step-by-step instructions to focus one's thoughts in the right direction. An excellent and easy-to-use self-help resource.

  3. Ellerton is Brilliant, Concise, Precise, Lucid, and Comprehensive. This is an in-depth explanation of, journey through, and discovery of NLP in its most clear and most comprehensively engaging representation. By far the most comprehensive and thorough and easy-to-understand book on NLP. I'm still reading it (plan to read it cover to cover) and will constantly use it for reference.

  4. As the title says, this book is for coaches, managers and YOU! There are a lot of books out now on NLP and a lot of people talking about it. Roger Ellerton lives it. Oftentimes I've found that people talk about NLP but don't give action steps to put it in practice. This is what this book does with exercises and examples. This book is good for anyone who would like to improve communication with others yet also, good for improving communication with oneself.

Pick it up, read it, use it; read it again. It's worth the time and effort.

    Revvell

  5. I have recommended this book to friends who would like to understand the subtleties of reading people. It is a good starting point for people wanting to know how best to approach individuals.
