5 comments about Positive Thinking Every Day: An Inspiration for Each Day of the Year.
  1. Thousands of studies have shown how much stress affects your emotions and health - and how reducing stress can have an incredibly powerful effect on your daily life. The mindset you set up for yourself each day can literally make you more healthy - and keep you that way.

This is where Norman Vincent Peale's book comes in. Every day it provides something for you to consider, a blurb to think about. You don't have to read the book straight through. In fact, it works better if you don't. Just keep it on your desk. Pick it up every day or so and see what it says. Think about the words. If you come across a favorite saying, post that up by your computer monitor. Each of us will find different pages which speak to us personally - which is why it's great that there are 365 of them!

For example, here's one. "For the next twenty-four hours, deliberately speak hopefully about everything, about your job, about your children's marks in school, about your health, and about your future." Isn't that an amazing thought - that it might be a challenge to be hopeful, just for 24 hours? If you were actively hopeful, what kind of beneficial ripple effects might that have on others around you? It could literally make your entire environment incrementally better.

It is tempting to want this information in calendar form, one of those page-a-day to go through. On the other hand, with that system you'd have to buy a new one each year. With this book, you can just move a bookmark through it each day, and you don't have to buy another book when the year is up.

If I have a complaint, it's that the book doesn't say it's Christian up front - but there are a fair number of God references in it. I don't mind books that promote Christianity, but they should let you know they're going to do that, rather than just having it pop up once you've already bought it.

  2. This is a wonderful, timeless book. I had purchased this for myself last year. This year I have purchased 9 more to share as Christmas presents for family and friends. All of the books by this author are treasures.

  3. I love this book and read it every day. Short, sweet and to the point. I give this book to everyone i love.

  4. Most of the daily meditations can be directly linked to the Bible, and I would have hoped that there would have been Bible references beneath his meditations. Anyone can give "good" advice, but when one sees the advice hailing from the Bible, it gives the advice a lot more credibility and power, in my humble opinion. It is important to be positive, but more importantly, to know why. I have taken to writing in his book the Bible verses that I believe correspond to his meditation, what a wonderful way to start the day!

  5. Handy. I read the thought for the day to my staff to get us off to a positive start.

5 comments about Secrets of Success: The Science and Spirit of Real Prosperity.
  1. love the book so far. it is very well written and there is a lot of useful information.

  2. The author gives very specific, relevant ideas and information that is easily usable. Excellent!

  3. I have read all her books and they are all 5 stars, but this is my favorite. This is so jam packed with good information I would love to listen to it over and over while walking or driving.

  4. This is my second book from Sandra Ann Taylor. The first book that I've read from her was "Quantum Success" and I can't say which one is better, but if I had to choose I'd choose this one": "Secret of Success".

This is the Law of Attraction explained in a way that nobody else does. It's deeper than other books about this Law, but also more clear. Thanks to Sandra I can say now understand much better the Law of Attraction. This is may be the best book that I have read about this.

  5. I really could not get into this book. It lost my interest when the author went into hollograms. Then I could not really get into it because the things it discusses are not any different from most other books of this sort.

5 comments about Thanks!: How the New Science of Gratitude Can Make You Happier.
  1. I bought this book after reading the glowing reviews here on Amazon, and listening to several recorded interviews with Dr. Emmons.

The book is disorganized, choppy, and preachy, in my opinion. It reads like a semester's worth of lectures to undergraduates, slightly massaged to be a book. Very, very disappointing.

Especially, it does not live up to the subtitle: "How the New Science of Gratitude Can Make You Happier"--it offers very little in the way of exercises or practices that one can use.

Don't get me wrong; it's worthwhile borrowing this book from the library and reading it, once you get past the choppiness. But it's not worth spending any money on it.

  2. I have been reading up on the topic of gratitude since reading a newspaper account of Professor Emmon's research on the topic. I have now studied this recent book on the topic and taken extensive notes. While the issue has always struck me as very important, I didn't realise the empirical support for the topic. Work conducted by Professor Emmons and his colleagues has provided important evidence of how even simple interventions such as keeping a daily gratitude diary can have a significant impact on students as well as clinical populations. I would thoroughly recommend this book as it provides a comprehensive overview of the gratitude literature, as well as tips on how to bring more gratitude practices into your daily life. Unusually, it is not just a self-help book but a scientific guide, written by a genuine expert in the field, unlike so many books in this genre. I look forward to developing and extending my own work in this area. There can be few better introductions than this book.
Dr Jerome Carson, Consultant Clinical Psychologist, London, England.

  3. Thanks is a great primer in gratitude for those working in the coaching field. It gives a good mix of research, world experience, and individual stories. To that mix is added proven tools and techniques to enhance gratitude as a way of creating a happier life.

  4. I bought 60 copies of this book to give as part of an "Adult Goody Bag" to my guests at a party I gave. Needless to say I think this book has lots to offer all the successful, anxious friends I have. And clearly many of them are heeding the books advice as they're sending me Thank You notes. A wise and true book.

  5. The social sciences have investigated positive attributes, and research on gratitude is emphasized in Emmons' book. He clearly states his purpose: "This book showcases the new science of gratitude. Woven into the narrative is a discussion of how the great religious leaders, philosophers, theologians, and writers have written about gratitude in different cultures and historical periods. To encourage the reader to begin the journey of gratitude practice, I include a discussion of practical techniques that will increase readers' gratitude and happiness. I intend this book to provoke intellectual interest as well as self-examination..."

Emmons clearly identifies difficulties in examining gratitude from a scientific perspective. First, it defies easy classification. Gratitude is an attitude, but also a mood, an emotion, a personality trait, a motive, a moral virtue, a resource for coping and a way of life. Acknowledging the complexity of the concept, he identifies two fundamental components of gratitude: acknowledging goodness in one's life, and recognizing that the source of this goodness is at least partially outside the self. Emmons also acknowledges that, "The tools of science seem to come up short when we try to understand people living lives of gratefulness in extraordinarily difficult situations." Subsequently, his book is a narrative, a narrative that interweaves classical and popular writings with brief descriptions of research from the social sciences. Excerpts from "gratitude journals," written by research subjects, illustrate key concepts.

Emmons is true to his stated purpose. Thanks! is not a review of the literature on research from the social sciences. It is a book of insights, some from research, some from personal experiences, and some from ancient or popular writers. I found myself nodding in recognition or using his insights to re-frame situations in my own life. My own journey of gratitude motivated me to read this book. I enjoyed it. Reading Thanks! generated a list of books by other authors that I will pursue.

5 comments about Chicken Soup for the Military Wife's Soul: Stories to Touch the Heart and Rekindle the Spirit (Chicken Soup for the Soul).
  1. I HATE to read. Typically it bores me and puts me to sleep. With that said, I somehow ran across this book on-line. I read the Amazon reviews and decided to give it a try. I got the book and in one sitting read half of the book straight through. I was addicted to it! I honestly could not put it down. Even the section on "Raising Military Brats" I read although I do not have any children. My husband has 13 months left of his tour in Iraq and it was somewhat comforting to read about WWI or WWII wives who, in their husband's two year deployment, maybe received one letter, if at all. It made me appreciate what I have, even though what I want is thousands of miles away. I definitely recommend it for any military wife.

  2. It's probably because my husband is in the military and he's not with me right now, but I enjoyed each of these stories, even if some of them plucked at my heart strings a bit too close to home. I read this book on a plane, which I do not recommend! I had to hide every sniffle. Of course, these stories are sometimes a bit cheesy and "feel good," but it's called Chicken Soup for the Soul for a reason.

  3. Once again a chicken soup book is great! As a wife of a deployed soldier, this book helps me keep a positive and uplifted spirit. I would reccomend this book to any military wife.

  4. This book is touching, compassionate and reinforces why our country is so great! Have a box of tissues near by this one is a tear jerker!

  5. Everyone who lives the military life can always use some humor to get them through the crazy times. This book offers that. Great book. I like the fact that it is one you can pick and put down anytime and still enjoy and get something out of it.

  1. Bill Cosby's latest novel makes everyone uncomfortable about the realities of what slavery and institutional racism have done to America.
Cosby's take is that there comes a time when black people have to take some responsibility for making their lives and communities better. It is no wonder that he has been ostracized by the media minorities who make their livelihoods on blaming others for black America's problems. The book gets a little preachy and simplistic about solutions toward the end of the book. The beginning is better. It is worth a read.

  2. I enjoyed the fresh, new perspective, from an African American about the true condition of the black community. Too bad it is not shared by the popular leaders from these community - rather opting to play the ever played-out "blame "the man" game."

  3. Easy read. Facts are very interesting. Too bad the people who actually read this book, are not necessarily the people who should read this book.

  4. Good product delivered as promised.
    I'm OK, it's OK, you're OK.

    Thank you very much.

  5. Well, the proof is in the pudding. There is now president who happens to be black. Attitude and hard work equals success. So, Come on people get on up.

5 comments about Every Monday Matters: 52 Ways to Make a Difference.
  1. On the back cover of this Gen X/Y book is the question "Have you made today matter?" It's a great question because most of us do not even consider this in our daily lives. Then, at the end of the day, we are kept awake at night wondering how we can ever make a difference in a world where so much is wrong.

Well, fear not, because the creators and writers of www.everymondaymatters.com have put together a list of 52 activities you can do alone or with your friends and family that will be good for you, your community, and the world. Although some of the tasks require planning and cannot be completed in one day, that leaves no excuse for not beginning the process of a more time-consuming task (#45 Get involved with Foster Kids). Some are so simple they can be done right at your computer (#44 Use Online Bill Pay). Either way, there are enough activities to give anyone a year full of Mondays that matter. As a side issue, if you find, as I have, that there is an activity listed you have already completed, such as #21 Learn CPR, feel free to substitute your own ideas or visit their website for resources and other activities you can do.

Get ready to make a difference one Monday at a time. As a bonus, the book includes a CD-ROM with videos of people making a difference and special links to exclusive portions of their website. The book is even made with recycled materials.

I give this book 5 stars and urge every family to get a copy.

    [...]

  2. This book can revolutionize the way that we make a difference in this world. It's design, having all of us think of ways that we can help others in whatever capacity for whatever cause, opens up opportunities that traditional giving does not. It also calls for action on a weekly basis, not big overwhelming actions, just action. This is a great way to get people moving foward not just waiting for the right thing to come along. The suggested ways to help are also good because again it decreases the reasons for procrastinating.

  3. EMM provides practical legs to a heart and body that says, "I want to make a positive difference in the lives of others." Inspired by this book, a group of my friends are committed this year to monthly efforts to improve the lives of others in simple, concrete ways. Thank you Matt and Kelly for increasing awareness of how to be compassionate and caring.

  4. This is kaizen for social activists!

The concept of Every Monday Matters is very interesting. The whole idea is both altruistic and practical at the same time as each week of the year, or rather each Monday of the year, focuses on making the readers' lives, and the world around us all, a bit better. The outcome is getting many people to make small changes leverages the change in the world about us. Getting one person to improve their lives on a weekly basis will have a profound difference at the end of a year.

Though the book is no "casual reading" in that there is not any plot - it is more of an instruction manual, Every Monday Matters can make an interesting and engaging read. I would imagine that like me you will find yourself turning pages and saying "I can do that!" on many of the Monday entries. At the same time there are entries (Read a Book, No Nicotine, etc.) that have already been incorporated in my daily routine so that Monday would be empty on my schedule. I am sure that anyone who reads this book and is committed to change in the world would find entries of the same.

There is a bit of help in this book and from this book for everyone: Military veterans, old folk, children, homeless, animals and... You!

The whole purpose of Every Monday Matters it would seem has nothing to do with politics but it has everything to do with getting people involved in small steps, every week over an entire year. The idea that jumps off the page is that the lives of both the reader and the world around him will be altered by this book in a small way for an entire year.

If you are the type person who is into accessories in their books Every Monday Matters includes fifteen-minute bonus DVD providing two celebrity segments and some codes for special areas on the book's own website. I found it interesting but if you don't have Apple Quick Time you will have to download this first before watching the DVD section. If you aren't the type person who is in to that then don't worry, the book gets its points across sufficiently.

I have the feeling that if you do buy this book and read the whole thing from beginning to end you will have to either invoke its ideas into your life or put it away where you cannot see it - or it will be a constant reminder of what you should be doing!

Not me though. I have been adding Tasks in my Microsoft Outlook for every Monday in the year to come!

  5. I was excited about receiving this book but disappointed after reading it. Most of the weekly suggestions were things most responsible citzens already do. I thought they (suggestions) would be more challenging.
Biggest problem in ordering books sight unseen.

5 comments about The Essential Laws of Fearless Living: Find the Power to Never Feel Powerless Again.
  1. Over the years, Guy Finley's output has been truly prolific. Books, cds, videos that interpret timeless spiritual wisdom in a modern way. This book borrows a little from his most inpiring moments. I found it truly inpirational from start to finish, pointing to the true nature of self from many different angles. Guy has a very unique style of sharing the wisdom, often employing little parables, humour and poetic writing. In his audio material, there is the added dimension of his very emotive voice.

To select just one example of what touched me in this book, his unfolding of the biblical verse 'be still and know that I am God' (Psalms 46:10) was a wonderful revelation. He points to the reality that 'who we are' is the underlying stillness beneath our thoughts and emotions. 'Be still and be free.'

  2. This has become my current favorite self-development/motivational book. I've purchased so many books of this type, but always ended up feeling like something was still missing, or I didn't quite get, and end up buying other books in the hopes one of the them would unlock whatever it was I was trying to resolve. I've read it twice in the last 3 weeks, scribbling notes all over it, and I think somewhere inside is the key to that 'thing' I've been searching for. Not sure what exactly what that thing is, but situations that would've been stressful for me [recently] have completely vanished, I realized in hindsight.

As far as personal developement goes I've made tremendous gains, and the urge to keep looking for the next book has vanished and I plan on reading it again in the near future.

I think it's all in the framing. Finley has a way of writing that combines good NLP with the lyricalness of, say, John O'Donohue.

  3. Get this book today. Fearless Living talks to those of us that are spending too much of our waking hours thinking and worrying about yesterdays gone by or tomorrows that have yet to come, imagining circumstances our over active minds make up out of thin air (people looking at us in a funny way so we make up a scenario that they don't like us for some imaginary reason). Hahahaha! Been there, done that!?

This is wasting sooooo much of our time and lives, keeping us from living "right now" and in "the moment". Guy Finley is terrific and you will LOVE the book. It will change your life. It will make you HAPPY!

  4. The wisdom that you will find in this book is very helpful for those who are true spiritual seekers. If you have read any of Mr. Finleys books or heard any of his talks you will love this book. If this is your first experience of Mr. Finleys work then this book is a wonderful choice. Mr. Finley always teaches that we must discover the truth within ourself of what he teaches. If you are looking for a blueprint with A-Z then this book is probably not for you at this time. If you are looking for that peace within yourself or wisdom that you can use in every situation in your life read this book. What a wonderful handbook of spiritual truth that can help you to discover within your self spiritual growth.

  5. This book is such an inspiration for spiritual seekers. Guy uses words to express truths that resonate with the reader. I personally feel that he is speaking directly to me every time I read this book. He hits on truths that we all resonate with but are unable to express in words or pictures for ourselves. The book is also a source of reference and rememberance because although you may finish reading the book, you can always open it to any page at any time and find a phrase or word that you speaks to you regarding a situation you may be experiencing at that moment. Guy provides practical strategies for daily practice. He reminds us that we have the power to change any moment and experience that is presented to us.

5 comments about Reading People: How to Understand People and Predict Their Behavior--Anytime, Anyplace.
  1. There is no significant insight to this author's offering other than right and wrong means nothing in the legal process-and of course, you can make money from a legal travesty-buyers should'nt waste their money-I did

  2. I'm a "human behavior junkie" so I read all of these types of books, This one is not too bad. It for sure has some interesting insights. I much prefer Lieberman's YOU CAN READ ANYONE. That book is very practical, and as is his style, not filled with any fluff or psycho-nonsense.

  3. You might want to read the last 3 chapters first if you are looking to find the more useful info about READING PEOPLE. The author covers her tracks well by often mentioning that there is no guarantee in reading people. Let's say it's not an exact science. She does give good basic insight if you are YOUNGER. If you are an older person then there is not too much can be added to your repertoire.

For the cost conscious: get this one used and you can find which category of reader you fall into more economically. This is a book that can't do you harm or waste your time. Who knows - you might learn something about people. Get it.

  4. I have enjoyed reading this book very much. I am somewhat disappointed with some of the reviews. This book is like a text book; you're going to have to re-read the book several times with each time picking up something that you missed. You must next apply what you read and then re-read the book to interpret your findings.

I have found the book very useful in understanding people around me. I have applied the lessons in this book to my work to help me interpret actions by people including my boss. It has at times helped me to understand the hidden meaning past events of other people's actions with me and others.

It is not a quick read. Do not expect to be able to in "5-minutes" learn the secret meaning of people's actions. It is a good book that deserves several re-reads.

  5. After reading this book, I realize the complexity of the art of reading people. There are many factors to consider. This book is not meant for a surface reading. But, it brings to the forefront the observations one should take in before making a judgment call on anyone. It is also helpful as a self exam. You start to pay attention to your own conversations and interactions with others no matter where you are.
