5 comments about The Better Brain Book.
- Knowing Dr. Perlmutter and his wife, personally, I can say they practice what he preaches. (By the way, she is brilliant, as well.) I have followed one or both of them around in natural food markets for years, and I am wiser and healthier for doing so. They each have a wonderful sense of humor, and are two of the most down-to-earth and polite people on earth. Their two beautiful (and handsome) children are poster teens for perfect health. And the best yet? They unconditionally LOVE one another.
- I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in keeping their brain healthy for many years to come!
- Here's one of the few board certified neurologists who will tell you he thinks cell phones and other electromagnetic fields are very likely bad for your brain. Too many others buy into the official pronouncements, and accept that it's OK to keep using your cell phone until the proof of harm is overwhelming.
- So glad I came accross this book.
So easy to read and absorb the helpful information this book is full of cover to cover! :)
- Dr. Perlmutter is a board-certified neurologist and yet he writes in language we can all understand. If you really follow what he says, it works! And it is not a difficult plan to implement. So get the book, don't let it sit around and get dusty, read it, do it! "Try it, you'll like it!"

5 comments about Building Mental Muscle : Conditioning Exercises for the Six Intelligence Zones.
- With the reviewer from April 6, 2004.
This is exactly what this book is. A sort of guide to how the brain works, with some "exercises" thoughtlessly thrown in when the authors remembered that it's supossed to be a book on "Building Mental Muscle."
I, too, am surprised at all the 5-star reviews. I wouldn't throw the book away, though; I'd say you can glean some pretty interesting information from it.
- This is one of the few books on the market which aims to
sharpen intellectual skills. The author gives the reader an
important portal into how people learn and retain information.
For instance, the authors teach us how to learn by excluding
all other information from consideration while in deep concentration. Protein synthesis occurs with long term learning
wherein events may be emotionally charged in order to retain
them permanently. The conscious recognition of facts is different
from the unconscious recognition of facts. Memory may sharpen
with practice and by association with key words/phrases or
attributes. For instance, associate Mr. Green's green shirt
with Mr. Green. Sometimes name recollection can have associative
aspects. The work even has religious sayings.
For instance, Proverbs 17:22 states that " A cheerful head
is good medicine. "
This book won't make you smarter; however, it will assist in
utilizing your intelligence in a more organized/rational manner.
The author's presentation can benefit by organizing study
sessions rationally so that material can be recalled by a simple
collection of associations.
- Medical professionals and also anyone interested in the brain/intelligence will certainly benefit from this book. For the beginner, it is an invaluable starting point to a lifestyle, if one so chooses to undertake it, of "neuro-fitness". It is also just an interesting book to read, with medical terms that may get heavy, but are explained in full for the laymen. For the professional, it is an interesting layout of research and ideas which may apply to better yourself, your children, or maybe even your patients, if that applies to your field.
I am not saying it is the best book of all time, but it is worth the money and a weekend to read and digest it.
- This a really user-friendly guide to increasing your brain power. I suppose some might prefer something a little more scientifically in depth, but this is an easy read with lots of fun, challenging games. Try this for the kids: Power Brain Kids
- (Sorry about spelling etc,.. I'm from norway. Age 44. Male. BsC.)
This book was a interesting surprise to mee. I thought I was going to read about psychology (I was right there), and that maybe it could give me a clue to improve my poor memory (It did).
But what's realy stuck in me after reading this bokk (I skipped all the exercises), is the relation between stress and deseases like alzheimers.
If you want to have many years of good living ahead, the first half of this book is realy worth while.
Other parts (second half) are just stating what humanity knows this far about how hearing and vision works, and could be of interest to someone who have not read any pshychology before, but the fact is, we still don't know how our brain works, so not practically usefull for living a better life, like the first half was.
I hope this was a alternative view to some of the other reviews :-)

3 comments about Brilliant Mind, A: Proven Ways to Increase Your Brainpower.
- Just as our bodies need physical exercise to stay in top form, our brains must be exercised as well. "A Brilliant Mind" is a worthwhile book to purchase or borrow from the library. Read it daily to keep the mind focused; challenge yourself to learn a new & different way of doing something you already do. We do so many things by rote- mix it up to help your brain stretch. Try a recitation. Do a puzzle. For Baby Boomers out there, learn poetry, expand on something you learned in school. I keep this in my car & find plenty of downtime to use the book. I recommend.
- Neuroplasticity and neurogenesis, two terms that mean the brain can be molded and the brain can grow, are touted as evidence that increasing word power may improve intelligence. In what is ninety percent a book of vocabulary words and definitions, the introductory chapters of A Brilliant Mind make a case for how memorizing the word lists within will increase one's brainpower. Some anecdotal evidence is cited (historical persons attributing their fame and success to their vocabulary) as well as a few related academic studies (including ones that show that the nervous system can change over time based on experience). However, consider these two Q&A points:
Q: Have the word lists in this book been in any way empirically validated for improving intelligence?
A: Nope.
Q: Has there ever been a study where memorizing vocabulary has produced an increase in IQ?
A: No. None mentioned in this book, anyway.
Perhaps it is this lack of empirical support that persuaded Dr. Minirth to backpedal from the claims on the cover and make this vague promise at the end of chapter two, "My contention is that a brilliant mind--indeed, a healthy, peaceful mind--may be within reach for many." Notice the multiple qualifiers; stating `my contention' (my take on it), then equating brilliant with healthy/peaceful, then writing it `may' (or may not) be with in reach for many (but not all).
So, the `ways' in Minirth's book aren't really `proven' as the title suggests. However, for those wanting to expand their vocabulary, this book might be a good choice. In the end, even if your IQ stays the same, you should be able to impress your friends and colleagues by using some big words.
- This a a great book to keep in your pocket, makes those waiting minutes pass quickly. You never get tired of reading it.

5 comments about The Amazing Memory Kit: Everything You Need to Improve Your Memory!.
- I have O'Brien's audio program, and it outlines the same thing. Overall, his program is very effective. The kit includes a booklet , 4 memory maps and a deck of 100 practice cards.
I found the booklet to be the most valuable part of the kit. As for the memory maps and practice cards, I don't think they are necessary. My advice: read the book and remember the key concepts, but develop your own memory map so it is personal and more memorable to you. And if you need practice, why not just apply it to your everyday life, instead of using random and trival objects on a deck of cards.
The booklet has the key concepts of his audio programs inside in a concise and effective format.
His programs no doubt works, but only if you put effort in to it and apply the techinque in your everyday life. If you are in need of improved memory, this is a recommended buy.
- After reading the book and using one of O'Brien's maps, I was able to memorize 25 objects from 25 cards in less than 3 minutes. I then constructed my own memory map and repeated using a different 25 objects/cards again in less than 3 minutes. While using O'Brien's map works, you have to memorize the map first. This can take a while. Making up your own map does not take long and is much easier to visualize and use.
I find this information valuable for study and memorization of information I need for my work. This kit is a good place to begin memory management.
- I agree with the poster, the book is the best part of the kit.
The memory maps are ok, again the other reviewer said you have to memorize the maps first. It gives you an idea of the types of journeys you could use though.
I only had one gripe with the cards although very minor, for using the dominic system the cards went up in 1,2,3 instead of 01,02,03. Like i said it was very minor, i think it would of been good to have 2 decks and have the backs of the number cards blank so you could write your own Peoples names on the back, just an idea. I made my own out of flash cards anyway which was cheap enough.
- I had previously read Dominic O'Brien's book "How to Develop a Perfect Memory". While his Journey Method sounded very useful, I was had a very difficult time trying to visualize a journey around my house or neighborhood. This kit was just what I needed. The book is very good and very attractive. And the memory maps served as excellent examples of how to create a memory journey. I found I could memorize one of the 25 stage maps in 10 or 15 minutes and immediately use it to remember 25 flash cards.
I don't know why it is that the memory maps he provides are easier for me to remember than real locations I'm familiar with; perhaps it is because they have very specific locations which are free from the clutter and distractions of real locations.
I've also tried the peg word systems described by Lorayne and Buzan. While these are useful I find the journey method much easier, faster, and more fun to use. You should try this if you haven't yet, you'll be amazed by the power of your own memory!
- Excellent product, if you don't have my issues, as discussed below
Memorizing is clearly about short term memory. My problem, which is why I'm exploring this product, is a learning disability affecting short term memory.
Because of my 'sequencing' problem, images are not always easy to keep in sequence. I have no doubt that if you have no problem with sequencing, this product will increase your short term memory by 50% easily. I'm not quite so lucky, I have to put a lot more work into it.
