  1. I find this book similar to someone telling a person what it's like to do something really well by saying "You just have to feel it--I can't explain it." Plenty of examples of infant and child (as well as some adult) prodgies are given, but what would be more interesting is to find out how you could get the same results as these people did, but all you're left with is the feeling that you have to be "born with it". Don't waste your time or money.

  2. Because of the previous review I must comment on this book and some of the information provided within. Supermemory -in some ways- is a how-to book for memory. What is available in this book is a rich depository of valuable theories, experiments, well-known scientists, and a rich bibliography. Also contained in this book is the explanation of Superlearning, which is a method of using music and specifically timed beats of which any persons may recite material to be learned.

This book is very special because of the valuable resources, and of the specific material provided. I still look to this book as being a modest bible for human memory. This book is not particularly a "how-to" book on improving your memory, but is in most part a record of experiments, health, references, and valuable accounts of scientists and brain researchers.
Scientists and brain researchers talked about in this book include:
Dr. Bob Beck, Patrick Flanagan, Vladimir Raikov, Carl, Schroeder, Jack Schwartz, Georgi Lazanov, Rupert, Sheldrake, Hans Selye, Edgar Cayce, and many, many others.

Some topics in this book include:
Russian mind control, Neuroscience, ESP, Psychometry, Quantum Healing, Reincarnation, SALT, meditation, and a great deal more.

This book does cover a wide range of topics regarding memory. I believe that if the information contained in this book is learned, utilized, and further studied, one can better improve memory and health. I believe that this was the main-focus of the authors. This book contains a lot of valuable information. One person cannot simply follow 3 easy steps in order to improve your memory, and I believe memory is a work in progress.

One might realize, at this moment in time, many of the topics discussed in this book are very much being practiced, used, and theorized to this day. When written this book was leading the path for the new science of memory. Of course this new science of memory continues, and is very strong, to this very day. One of the finest books ever written on the subject of memory.

1 comments about Memory (Handbook of Perception and Cognition).
  1. I use this book literally every day in my research. It is never far from my writing desk. If you are a cognitive psychology student you should consider buying it while it's still in press, as it reviews pretty much everything you would want to know about human memory. On the other hand, it's highly technical, which means most people who don't plan to study cognitive psychology professionally should probably consider something easier to read, like Baddeley's recent "Human Memory" or Dan Schacter's "Searching for Memory".

5 comments about How to Learn Anything Quickly: An Accelerated Program for Rapid Learning.
  1. It kind of seems like you'd have to apply everything in this book just to reading this book if you want to learn anything. The author breaks up accelerated reading into eight superlinks. For example: left-brain visual, right-brain auditory, etc. If you fit into a single category like that perfectly, then this book will really help you. But, like myself, I don't think people are that easily labeled, and having read the book cover to cover, I found very little useful information. In fact, a lot of it just states the obvious. For instance: "Auditory learners should ask for information to be presented in an auditory manner." Well.... duh. See what I mean? However, there is a section on memorization that I found a little insightful. But for the most part, the thing I will remember this book most for is that it specifically tells us that not all people learn alike. That's something all of us need to understand.

  2. This is the book we should all have been exposed to early in our school years. It would have made our respective remainder of our academic career much more successful and fun.

The two tests within the book are excellent and accurate. It measures you on two axis, the first one whether you are quantitative oriented (left brain), or more creative/artistic oriented (right brain). The other axis measures what is your main informational sensory channel (visual, audio, kinesthetic). By combining the results of the two tests, you will know what is the best way for you to absorb information and learn new stuff.

I have read tons of books on this subject. This is the clearest.

  3. An excellent book! After the two tests (which put me strongly in the "Left-Brain, Auditory" category), the description was so close to me that it scared me. Not like one of those Astrological signs where you say: "yeah, that sounds like me AND ANOTHER MILLION PEOPLE". This one gets you squarely. And leads you to the quickest and best way to learn new stuff.

  4. On the one hand, the various learning styles were interesting. I don't think I would call them learning styles per se, but more general concepts of how one processes information, from meeting people to entering a room for the first time.

As a learning method, the book falls short. The tests lean heavily on 8 specific styles. At the same time, the author acknowledges mixed or integrated styles (combinations of the 8, applied in different ways). Yet after identifying these two styles, the author abandons them for the rest of the book, providing no guidance or suggestions at all for applying an integrated or mixed learning style. You're left on your own to figure it out, which pretty much negates the book's usefulness.

In general, it was an interesting read for the concepts and ideas. For practical application, it was disappointing.

  5. This book is a must for anyone who wants to learn more about their own and others' learning styles. Teachers and parents often teach according to their own learning style, and this books breaks that tendency, by describing multiple learning pathways. For the reviewer who complained that the author didn't advise those with multiple modalities, I find that you can use your creativity to blend the author's techniques. (for example, if you are visual and kinesthetic, use colorful diagrams AND movement to enhance learning). I also appreciated that tactile and kinesthetic were given separate attention, since they are often lumped together in other books. Highly Recommended!

3 comments about The Sharper Mind: Mental Games for a Keen Mind and a Foolproof Memory.
  1. Easy-to-apply memory tips and techniques for learning names when being introduced, remembering numbers and dates, and reducing absentmindedness. The hints are user-friendly and can be used in social situations as well as in business.

  2. This book was of great help to me. Even though I am only in my mid forties I needed a memory boost and The Sharper Mind certainly provided it. Well worth the money.

  3. This book is great. For remembering numbers, conquering absentmindedness, recalling numbers, mental math, and mental workouts, etc.... This book has much to offer for mind improvement. This book covers a wide range of abilities for mind betterment. I would recommend this book because of the different methods offered in which other books might not comment. This book is not extremely detailed and elaborate but I believe it goes well in accompanying other memory books. The memory populate should read.

2 comments about Brain Workout: Easy Ways to Power Up Your Memory, Sensory Perception, and Intelligence.
  1. Overall, the suggestions for powering up your brain are very easy. Many of the techniques are very similar to what you probably no doubt have read in popular magazines. However, there are quite a large number of techniques that focus more on the psychokinetics of improving brain-power, such as challenging your senses. The book also dips briefly into mnemonics, but only gives you a taste -- it sends you to other books for further reference. So, if you're looking for something substantial, this is not the book for you. If you are looking for ideas brainstormed by other people, then you might want to look at this.

  2. This husband and wife team have written a winning book about a very important subject--the brain. Dr. Winter is a neurosurgeon and director of the New Jersey Neurological Institute. Ruth Winter has an M.S. and is a colulmnist and author of numerous popular health and science books. They are a winning writing team because this book is informative and easy to read. I especially enjoyed the excellent activities and brain-building examples that are included, such as the list memorization (on page 98) and the face identification (on pages 98-100). There is a glossary in the back and lots of information on the numerous aspects of our brain that we should exercise--which will improve the brain's function. I am especially intrigued by this book because my 76 year old mother recently started learning how to play bridge. She told me she was doing it partly because it was important for her to learn something new as a way of keeping her brain functioning better! Sound advice for us all as this excellent book attests! As the subtitle indicates: "Easy Ways to Power UP Your Memory, Sensory Perception, and Intelligence"

5 comments about Human Memory.
  1. I had to use this book for a class. It is packed with information but often it is difficult and frustrating (for me) to understand. Not for the layperson unless you are really into cog sci.

  2. Difficult? Yes. Is the brain easy to understand? No. If you are a college student, and you are complaining about the difficulty of this book, then drop out of college. Besides, it isn't that difficult. Nothing like you'd see in a computer science course.
This textbook offers a balanced approach to the study of human memory. It does not present its material as facts, but rather as positions which are heavily contested by competing theories. It presents evidence for and against each model proposed. Excellent.

  3. Although I am a psych student with a pretty good GPA, I find this book difficult to understand. The difficulty seems to come from the authors' desire to condense as much information as possible in just a few hundred pages. This leads to a cryptic language, where some terms are defined only once and some sentences become a string of such words, a thing which ,personally, frustrated me.

  4. This book is poorly written, and I found some parts to be repetitive. Although I normally do well in my undergraduate psychology classes, I found this book dreadful to read through, as the author doesn't write in a way that would make the concepts easier to understand. It's just not concise as the other psych books I've gone through. A dry read.

  5. This book covers a great deal of research in memory by condensing each paper into a 1-2 paragraph summary. As a result, the writing is often vague and confusing. Making matters worse, the book seems to be a rough draft published without the benefit of an editor. The sentences are convoluted, terms are poorly defined and used inconsistently, and the material is disorganized. There is no unifying framework for understanding all the research results presented. The lack of organization makes it unsuitable even as a reference.

In short, this book has nothing to recommend it.
