5 comments about I'm Grieving as Fast as I Can: How Young Widows and Widowers Can Cope and Heal.
  1. is different than being an older one. This book basically explains that any way you approach it, being widowed is difficult...and any way you can find helpful to cope is "okay" and within normal limits. It also addresses delayed grief responses, which I found particularily helpful. Most things that I have gone through, angry feelings etc. are somehow brought up. The anectdotes are good. The book does give ideas, for those that want them, on how to have outside influences help you deal with grieving. Although some parts of the book are not always relevant, one can pick and choose which sections to read without loosing continuity.
    KT

  2. I am a young widow and found this book to provide a great deal of comfort, understanding and support at a time when I very much needed it. It helped me to know that my thoughts and feelings were normal and felt by many men and women in my situation. I would recommend to any young widow/widower.

  3. Great book for young widows. Many books are aimed towards older widows. This book hits the nail right on hte head. A must read.

  4. So many of the quotes from this book matched my thoughts or actions. It validates that you are not going crazy, and are not the only one thinking in that way.

The book is aimed at people under 50, but I think the majority of the themes in the first half of the book would apply to any age.

The second half of the book had sections that applied to different groups (with children, gay, etc) and so was less useful for me, but I would definitely recommend this book, based on the first half alone.

  5. I bought this book for my sister after her husband unexpectedly died. She often reads self-help type books on various subjects, so I knew she would be interested in a book like this at some point. I did not know when, however, so I just left it out. Surprisingly, she read it the evening after the funeral. The next morning, she said it was a great help to find out that not only were many of her feelings shared by others going through the same thing but also to have some sense of what issues might come up in the near future. Of course, everyone is different. But it did seem to be quite useful for my sister. That was important, so it gets five stars from me.

5 comments about Page-a-Minute Memory Book.
  1. Harry Lorayne, the master of `Memory Power' says : Memory is an essential food for success. Memory boost the confidence for success. And at the age seventy plus, Harry has superb memory powers and those who have seen him on televion in action or read his books are sure to exclaim "Oh gosh! This is the Something! Memorising the names of a hundred strangers and than recognizing their faces and telling them their names just perfectly is real cool Memory! Who says "When you become old, you start losing memory" Harry just proves it wrong.Harry Lorayne's techniques increase performances as he says that every moment is precious and it counts. Sometimes, you don't remember the name of a person even though you sense it just beyond the grasp of your memory. You might not remember the name of a movie and such tip of the tongue which tots out incidents keep happening quite often. The best remedy for such flaws would be to stop fretting about it and take it lightly. Soon the memory is back normal again. Many times, we forget the keys and our minds go blank as we keep thinking and trying to locate it. It creates an annoying situation.Memory isn't fading but it's probably you didn't give the memory system the information it required. Harry Lorayne's techniques boost brain cells to activate, enhance powers of concentration, observation, be confident and makes a person alert and alive. You can test your Memory skills and get the tips and tricks to memorize in general, remembering names, telephone numbers, faces, classnotes, multiplication tables, music scores or just about anything. That's the Whizz Master of Memory Power Harry Lorayne with 'Page a Minute' Memory Book. Good and practically sound.

  2. I have read other of Harry Lorayne's books and they have all been valuable.

But this one is unique in that it gives a page by page plan to learn the techniques. You can go through it at your own pace and it's presented in an easy to understand way. You can spend as much time as necessary with each page. You can finish reading it understanding the mechanics of memory a lot better, and even a surface practicing of the techniques will help a lot.

Of course, systematic practice will work even better.

Some of Lorayne's other books present more detailed information, but this one is a good, solid presentation of memory improvement and is maybe one of the easiest ones to begin to put into practice for immediate improvement.

It is especially good for people who have had no prior exposure to memory improvement and would like to have some practical advice that they can implement right away.

Try it! You won't be disappointed.

  3. What can I say in simple words?
Another unique step by step guide which helps you to start use your memory. The great memory you already have. Harry proves that by teaching you how to take advantage of it.
Easy to understand techniques and explanations in this unique... Harry's style.
You work at your own pace. Author (like in other books) gives you a chance to work the way you like.
As a memory developmnent specialist I can say, that what Harry teaches is nuts and bolts of what you really need to improve your memory. Even single technique from this book can help you a lot.
But to be honest- you have to start and pracice!
I love that book and other books of this great author.

  4. I originally read this book many (many) years ago and had lost track of it and wanted to re-read. So, I did the most natural thing to do -- find it on Amazon. And, as they say, the rest is history. Received it and enjoyed it the second time around. Amazon and their partners in products have not disappointed me yet -- (knock on wood).

  5. This book is filled with a good number of memory improvement tricks and techniques that are presented in a conversational style and kept to roughly a single page in length.

In addition to showing you various techniques, the author subtly weaves in ways that improve your observation skills, helps you form creative associations, and that causes you to remember.

There are little exercises through out the book, but they are just that - samples. There's nothing boring or done by rote. As you're reading along, several pages later (which could days later), the author indirectly tests you, validating that if you even try the technique, you get high return with minimal effort. Simply practicing seems to improve your memory even more.

Instead of spending money on all those mega-memory courses, this book will get you there in shorter time and in a much more entertaining manner.

5 comments about Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge: The Book of Mnemonic Devices.
  1. What I truly love about this book is the comprehensiveness. It covers more than two dozen subjects, including large sections on math and spelling. The spelling section contains about 1000 mnemonics for the 1000 most frequently misspelled English words(200 more mnemonics than the classic book "Demonic Mnemonic"- which is also excellent).
From a teacher's standpoint, the math, history, geography, and spelling sections will be of great value for any student. What is more, some of the material is sophisticated enough for the Miller Analogies Test (MAT), a graduate admission test of vocabulary and cultural literacy.
It was amazing how quickly I warmed up to this book, and I am not surprised that it's been endorsed by not only two Scrabble champs, but also Brad Rutter (the guy who beat Ken Jennings and everybody else in Jeopardy's Ultimate Tournament of Champions).
Heaps of praise go to Rod Evans, and because the book is both entertaining and inexpensive, I see it making a great gift book as well.

  2. This book is by far the most comprehensive collection of mnemonic devices I've ever seen. I regularly use the spelling section and find the geography, history, and math sections quite useful. The great thing about this book is that it will be useful from first grade through grad school. Finally, the bibligraphy and the list of online sources will be useful to both teachers and students.

  3. Memory is a fickle friend for me -- a vital piece of info often seems just beyond timely recall. Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge is a great antidote for that lost, wandering, out-of-control queasiness that so often visits in those moments of weak memory.

The mnemonics catalogued here are encyclopedic - a great start on specific things to remember, in a long list of 45 useful categories from astronomy to zoology. For me the most useful categories are cooking, geopolitics, math, music, religion, and time & calendars (I'm constantly using "thirty days hath September, April, June & November...). Though I won't be using the psychology aids much, they sure offer an interesting, concise glimpse into human behavior and some of its disorders!

But just as important as the catalog is the broad view of how to remember things. With the perspective from this book on the many types of mnemonic (memory-aiding) tools available, I can construct my own mnemonics for the things I will learn tomorrow, or that are discovered or invented next month. Highly recommended.

  4. I have spent hours meandering through this maze of mnemonic devices, and yet I find a new and clever one each time I look. There is something for everyone to enable us to remember things we never thought we would.

The section on Spanish verbs will surely come in handy. I particularly like the mathematical and technical sections. After Dr. Evans's book, how can one remain content recalling the speed of light so imprecisely as 300 megameters per second?!

I consume with relish every one of this prolific author's books that I can get my hands on, and I encourage others to do the same. This book contains gems for persons of every age group, occupation, and avocation.

  5. What a great book! Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge (The Book of Mnemonic Devices) will come in very handy in my 7th grade classroom. I always try to find new ways to help my students with their study skills - this book will be tremendously helpful with that task. I especially find the Spelling section to be an excellent array of mnemonics to assist them with the difficult task of remembering how to correctly spell the most common misspelled words - myself included. Thank You Dr. Evans!

5 comments about Can't Remember What I Forgot: The Good News from the Front Lines of Memory Research.
  1. Sue Halpern takes the reader on a fascinating and provocative safari through the wilds of the human brain in this new book. Conventional wisdom should run and hide from Halpern's penetrative gaze: forget what you thought you knew about how memory functions, this book's tour of the frontlines of memory research tosses out old theories about how to stay sharp into old age and offers quality (and scientific) advice on how to keep your melon from meandering. So put down the crossword puzzle, read this book, and then call up an old flame and take him or her out ballroom dancing - you'll see what I mean when you finish Halpern's masterpiece. Bravo!

  2. The book, Can't Remember What I Forgot, adds to an increasing body of literature on what is being discovered about the brain, its complexity and it's relatively recently recognized plasticity. Sue Halpern has taken it upon herself to investigate some of the recent findings on many of the newer modalities for ensuring retention of what has been learned of cortical functioning. Ms. Halpern embarked on the study as much to report on advances in brain studies as to reduce her own personal anxieties. Nicely written and an interesting read, as a result it is quite engaging for a subject so difficult to comprehend and learn about. This is recommended reading for those with an interest in the brain and its many functions.

  3. Can't Remember What I Forgot: The Good News from the Front Lines of Memory Research I am not too pleased with this book because it is so technical. I thought it would be written for the average person, not a professional. I'm still reading it, but it doesn't seem to get any better.

  4. Gosh, I did forget what I forgot, I forgot the title of the book. All kidding aside, it's a book for everyone. It is not just for people who have a loved one with Alzheimers. We don't know who will or will not get this horrible disease.

  5. Theis book is about an area of importance to me. It lightly touches some very interesting concepts and ideas, but all too briefly. I was left wanting to know more . Sue needs to put more info in and leave more of the pondering and self-talk out.

5 comments about Kevin Trudeau's Mega Memory: How to Release Your Superpower Memory in 30 Minutes Or Less a Day.
  1. Give me a break! This author doesn't know diddly-squat about "releasing your superpowers". Give me a break! HE'S A FAKE!!!

  2. Bottom line: THIS IS A GREAT BOOK! I've been using it for years and is much more organized and motivating than Lorayne's, Higbee's, Buzan, etc. I can't believe how many people like to point out how Kevin is a convicted felon. Maybe so, but I'd still buy his book. Did he just repackage an idea someone else had? Maybe so, but it's far more entertaining and organized with logical progression than the others I've read. That's worth the price of the book alone. Furthermore, since a majority of the reviews here aren't even for the Mega Memory book, but rather a personal attack on Kevin, I'd like to put in my 2 cents. I've read his other books and they've changed my life for the better. His books aren't more than $15 people! Unless he showed up on your doorstep, conned you out of your life savings, and kicked your dog, I think the criticism is a bit unwarranted. For those of you who want an honest review of this book, listen to me. The book is $10.17. It's very worth it!

  3. I read this book a while back, but I'll be damned if I can remember what it was all about. I'm pretty sure I thought it was just so-so.

  4. I know what most of our opinions are concerning Kevin Trudeau and that can this man really be trusted. I can tell you that the information that he offers is not like others things that he advertises today where when you get it then you realized that you wasted your money. I honestly believe that you will not be wasting your money on this book. He was on Johnny Carson and was put in the hot seat to prove that he could recall a long list of numbers and he did.

I purchased this book because of an actual Grand Master of Memory recommended buying many books on memory. Sometimes an author might emphasize something that another author doesn't. In the case of Kevin Trudeau, he did that just for me where I was struggling with memory and Kevin happened to shed light in just the right area that helped release my mega memory. It is good to read a bunch of different books as this just might help you too.

Kevin does offer some interesting peg hooks and some very good ideas. There were some things that he emphasized that I found to be critical when it came to memory that other books did not. I think buying this book as well as others will help you get a complete and thorough understanding of memory and how to use it.

You do not have to fear this book because he will actually teach you his techniques and not give you a list of bologna that he seems to enjoy doing in his current books. The only thing that he says that I really question is when he states that you will get to the unconscious competent level and I know of no memory pro ever saying that. You will always have to consciously apply the techniques in order for them to work. You will never develop a photographic memory where it will just happen naturally. You will always have to vividly see the picture in your mind and consciously place that item and associate it either to your journey or whatever peg hook that you use.

  5. It was good. It was fun to do with someone else. Does it work....Well, I'm not sure. I quit before finishing the book. It lost the fun factor after reading several chapters. Its one of those books that you need to set time alone for. I don't have that as a busy mother.

  1. This is one of typical books published by Kumon. Kumon has many learning centers for kids in USA, and my son attended one of them. But I canot recomend the present method since they just rip off money from parents.
Many assitants at such centers are not qualified for teaching at all. Students cannot ask any complicated questions for most of cases.
I can find the similar pattern of the way of making money in this book.
I know, this book might help some of people who have a really decaying brain. I think this is a book for at least 70 or 80 years old who start to show a sign of decrepit behaviors. Many people can make such contents by using PC by themselves.

  2. A great book for exercising your brain. Easy to follow, simple and effective. After doing the exercises for almost 60 days I have seen definite improvement in my ability to recall and remember information.

  3. This was a very disappointing book. It could have been condensed into a 2 page article.

  4. Great brain exercises. Anxiously anticipating the next book. Ideal for any adult wanting to stay sharp.

  5. Exactly the book I was looking for. And, as usual, Amazon delivers things quickly!! That is why most people with APO and FPO addresses prefer to order from Amazon!

5 comments about The Memory Workbook: Breakthrough Techniques to Exercise Your Brain and Improve Your Memory.

  1. Worried because you forgot some of the items you were supposed to pick up at the grocery? Afraid that your memory lapses may signal impending Alzheimer's disease?

Ease your mind. This book will help you do just that by explaining memory and providing some very helpful techniques for memory improvement.

Along with the surprisingly enjoyable exercises, Mason and Kohn address the kinds of memory loss that are reversible and discuss why certain types of memory degrade with age. They discuss specific drugs that elderly folk often take and explain what their memory consequences might be. They also discuss the role of diet in memory and offer tips for diet and supplements backed up by the latest research.

Instead of giving up and giving in, help an elder improve their memory. Help yourself to a memory like a steel trap instead of a spaghetti strainer. Get this book, do the exercises, and develop a great memory - no matter what your age!

    Five stars!

    Phyllis Staff, Ph.D.
author, "How to Find Great Senior Housing"
    and
"128 Ways to Prevent Alzheimer's and Other Dementias"

  2. My wife and I decided to investigate our aging memory and started with many other books and programs before finding "The Memory Workbook". This was the last book that we purchased. The book is long and at times difficult and challenging but what a difference we both notice in our memory! This is hands down the best hands on self paced memory program out there. There is a nice section on specific memory disorders and resources.

  3. I now have the skills to better understand how my memory works and how to utelize it

  4. Although this book was written especially with seniors in mind, a person actually needs to want to get a better memory. A need to want to get better is motivated by prior experience.

My mother had neither the best education nor the most motivating parents, so I can see how see how a senior with better upbringing could make good use of this book.

As for those like my mother who prefers TV and videos for intellectual stimulation I believe that the Memory Workbook could easily be formatted to a learning type DVD.

In fact, I believe a video would be even more effective in the style of NLP mind control experts like Derren Brown and Keith Barry. Mind Control (along with proper exercise and essential nutrients) is at the core of a good memory and can be affected within a few minutes with the proper programming.

  5. If you are a boomer growing concerned about remembering where you left your keys, don't waste money on this book. Perhaps this was written for the very elderly who have never learned to improve their self-esteem, but that's old news for boomers. This book is very poorly written (the grammar is atrocious) -- it shows that anybody can write a book in these days of desktop publishing and cheap printing. It is filled with clap-trap, and never delivers what it promises to sell. Two thumbs down!

5 comments about Where Did I Leave My Glasses?: The What, When, and Why of Normal Memory Loss.
  1. This book is a rare treat. It is both informative and entertaining. Many of us "of a certain age" worry that our memory lapses are a sign of early Alzheimer's. What a relief to be told that it is normal to forget where I put my glasses as long as I still know what function eyeglasses serve. I purchased several copies of this book to give to my friends as birthday gifts.

  2. Dear Martha: I hope you are reading your reviews. I'd like to get in contact with you to see if you remember something in particular. You were the first to use the term "second wave" in a 1968 NYT article. Do you remember how you learned of this term? I am researching the origins of the important and influential term. My email is edubois@ucla.edu. Thanks in advance.

  3. Where did I leave my glasses? Where did I leave my keys? Why did I come into this room... what was I after? What was I talking about? Did I call you or did you call me? This witty, well researched, clearly written analysis of what happens to our memory as we get older is comforting in the sense that it suggests we aren't losing our mind... just our memory... and it's gonna happen to EVERYONE, in greater or lesser degrees. Every time I turned a page, I said to myself, "Yeah, that happens to me... Yeah, that happens to me." The author is not talking about serious medical conditions, Alzheimers and the like...just our everyday garden variety run of the mill forgetfulness. Age, and the little grey cells shrink too, but CONSIDER THE ALTERNATIVE TO AGING! This is a very KOOL book!

  4. Excellent book. Easy to read with great sense of humor. If you are at the age of needing magnifying glasses, do read this. You will find the difference between losing it and normalcy explained. Made me feel much better to know I am not the only one with memory issues. I dont remember the title of the book, but it was great.

  5. The reason I bought this book was its recommendation in the AARP magazine. I have been very impressed with the way it breaks up the memory processes and explains why some things stick in our memories and others are gone with in seconds. The book contains a great deal of medical technical information but is written in such away that it is easy to understand even for a non medical person. There are a great many examples that are quite humorous. As you read it, it is easy to say to yourself "Mmmm been there done that: or, Oh that is why I do that." I have already given this book as a gift to one person and plan to give to several others.

  1. I have many of Harry's books, and love him! He is such a sincere person and gives his all to us the reader.
Naturally if you have ordered this book, you are in a situation that you may be feeling concerned that your mind is feeling fuzzy, or that you want to keep your brain young and vibrant. You will not be dissapointed in this book at all.
I especially liked how positive the books overall feeling is. That our brains shouldn't be deteriorating and actually should be sharper than ever. I have tried the techniques in the book, and as long as I apply them, I have noticed an improvement! I now know my Bible books forwards, and backwards. Have memorized several scriptures, and am partially thru the Sermon on The Mount.
Our brains are wonderfully made, and we should take care of it. So go ahead, whatever you decide to memorize, it will help you in middle age and beyond. Thanks Harry for the encouragment and help to sharpen up!

  2. a marvelous and fun book by Harry Lorayne. I would recommend it for everone. All ages will take something good and beneficial from this book and in many cases it is potentially life changing.
    Thanks Harry

  3. I had read a Harry Lorayne book as a teenager many many years ago and found the techniques useful then.

This book allowed me to revisit his lessons as an elder retired physician and is helping me to cope with the usual senior moments that we all encounter.

    Highly recommended.

  4. This is a great book. I notice I'm not forgetting things as readily as I did. I can now tell you my safe deposit box number, my drivers license number, my car plates, and various phone numbers. It's also helped me to remember people's names. Great buy. Other programs want hundred(s) of bucks to improve your memory and prevent altzimer's. This does the same thing.

    Leah Levitt

  5. I heard the 3 CDs and immediately I started using his methods on improving memory. His methods have helped me to increased my memory in all aspects right away. The exercises are easy to follow and the applications practical. I recommend this book/CDs to anyone who wants to improve his memory.

5 comments about Aerobics of the Mind Cards: 100 Exercises for a Healthy Brain.
  1. The 100 exercises for a healthy mind which are mental fitness cards developed by the Attainment Company,Inc. are a very good means of helping each person address the growth of brain functioning. These are divided into twelve categories such as (1)wake up your brain, (2) creative problem solving, (3)art and imagination, (4)brainstorming (5)double mind and seven other similar and helpful categories. The hundred versions of activities in themselves are an incentive to action and can be used in any order so that a monotonous routine may be changed to a desireable action. The steady use of this approach will help form the concept of keeping abreast of the expansion of knowledge and reduce obsolesence to the same degree that the entire population faces. This text should stimulate many people in the middle age and the elderly to reconsider their life style in order to move with knowledge expansion in a very constructive manner and to live a more composed life.

  2. I just love the Brain exercise cards. I wish I had known about this product sooner. I use these cards with my mother who is showing early signs of dementia. The cards are fun and enhance the time my mother and I spend together.

  3. I've been usingthese cards with one on one conversations with the elderly people in my church and it's opened up avenues of good conversation. I've used them in a couple of small groups I lead and you can almost hear their brains working as they reflect on the questions, work the puzzles. In fact they have "aha" experiences as they solve the puzzles and cry out "Amazing, I did it!" with great sense of satisfaction and accomplishment. Several in one group want to get the cards for themselves.

  4. I work with seniors and used these cards with one who had stayed sharp and wanted to continue that way. Was able to pick out the ones she could handle more easily re declining sight and arthritic hands, and we had plenty to work with. She found them both fun and challenging, as did I -- despite the fact that I'm in my early 50's and she's in her late 90's!!

  5. I had brain surgery two years ago and have had slight memory problems since then. I ordered these cards after seeing a PBS show on brain plasticity and thinking that I might improve my memory with exercise (not just doing the same type of brain game over and over). These cards give you all kinds of ideas to work different parts of your brain, in groups or by yourself. I not only have improved my memory, but also my focus and mental alertness. I have receommended them to many other friends and and we're just in our fifties!
