  1. I enjoyed this book. It gives good peices of advice that just about any woman in todays society can use! I would love it if my dad were to write me letters like this. I think its a cute idea and i'm glad he turned it into a book. I really want to write letters about life to my children once i have them. I would recomend it to any young woman out there.

  2. My grandmother gave me this book around 1966, soon after I married. It provided basic advice about marriage that I took to heart, and the advice and the marriage are still working after 37 years. I loaned my copy to someone years ago, and it never came back, but I just bought a replacement. There's another generation coming up that I need to loan this book to.

  3. Charles Shedd shares the wisdom he gained from a long successful marriage with his daughter, Karen, befpre her marriage. "Letters to Karen" gives advice on establishing and maintaining a healthy, Christian relationship with her future husband. This advice is not just about how to treat each other right. It deals with the doubts and fears a new wife has on the day she wakes up, realizing that she is married, and asks herself "What have I done?" There is advice for handling the trials and tribulations which every marriage goes through. I read this book before my marriage and felt that it contained the best pre-marital counselling I received. Twenty-nine years later, I purchased this book for my future daughter-in-law. I am hoping it will be as helpful to her as it was to me.

  4. This is a wonderful, little book. Order it and you won't be disappointed. Easy to read and down to earth. For other books that will help your marriage greatly, click on these links: The Man of Her Dreams The Woman of His! and The Man of Her Dreams The Woman of His 2 - Livin' It and Lovin' It! (Volume 2)

  5. Ever wish you knew what to say? Maybe have you wanted to give good advice, or wished for good advice, but didn't know where to turn? A well-spoken minister wrote a series of letters to his daughter when she became engaged. I was given a copy of this book 31 years ago and I'm sending a copy to my niece who's recently become engaged. I think it is best to read one letter a day and thoroughly enjoy that note for the day.

  1. Not a book to learn overnight; a set of exercises and interesting ideas. Like many Eastern disciplines that make sense when you practice them, this book really calls for a long term commitment. Some things, like the subject of this book, are worth discipline and long term practice. This is a book to enjoy over the span of 6 months, or more, with a committed partner.

  2. For 60's/70's hangovers and neopseudotantra orgasmacists ISO the Big O, this guide to good sex says it all.

  3. The Art of Sexual Magic by Margot Anand is a useful tool for those interested in Tantra. It takes some reading, discipline and a willingness to trust your intuition.

Anand says that human sexuality has what we might call magical powers. I prefer to use the less subjective term "transmutational". The exchange of energy during sexual intercourse is not only so powerful that it can create another human being it can also be consciously used to create other things we want in life.

Anand teaches couples to focus on their personal vision during sex, and create changes in their daily relationships and circumstances through the energy they produce.

Anand believes that everyone can experience transformative power if the exercises in her book are diligently followed.

I enjoyed this book but I must admit that years of reading and intuitive training has made me receptive to her ideas.

  4. I just finished reading this book all the way the way through, and all I can say is WOWZA!! I haven't tried all the exercises but the one I did had amzaing results, and I hope to try them all. The isn't a book just for Pagans, although I thought it was when I ordered it. If your sex life or energy level needs a boost, buy this book.

5 comments about To Love as God Loves.
  1. Roberta Bondi brings the rich tradition of the early Church fathers and mothers into the 20th century, and invites us to learn anew what it means to love. I particularly liked what she has to say about the concepts of "perfection" and "humility." She writes in a very engaging manner, making it easy to not only understand her writing, but sparking the desire to live it out. A wonderful read for Christians and those who may have been wounded by Christianity.

  2. In an easy to read manner, Bondi addresses a "stodgy topic" (the early monastics) and transforms it into an INSIGHTFUL, Transforming look at what it means to be a Christian who loves as God loves. This book made me think that their is hope for the organized church. It made me realize that Christianity has a vital, intense and prophetic role to call people not just to know god but LOVE as God Loves

  3. To Love as God Loves Critique By Mark R. Braden

The title of this book, To Love as God Loves, challenges the reader to apply God's love in our approach to life. Bondi through select passage of Christian literature challenges us to see how "Godly love" should be striven for in His kingdom. In order to achieve that goal we must look at the commonality of our existence as men and women in God's world and be aware of what human frailties interfere with our ability to love. We must first come to fundamentally understand what is God's love and what is God's plan to use love as the foundational principal and keystone in upon which to build our life. Roberta C. Bondi effectively uses early Christian literature to present situational circumstances that can be used as metaphors of understanding God's love in our contemporary world.

Since love can assume so many different forms and be at many times be conceptual and the relationship of love to man can be situational to many different applications. Bondi's use of many different illustration' from historic Christian authors, give substance and fullness to our understanding of what love is and can be. To love, as God would have us love is to be continually aware of our relationship to our fellow man and how that relationship plays to God's intention of what he requires of loving subjects. I believe that Roberta C. Bondi accomplished her goal. She logically sets forth defining her terms, presents us with a current (albeit historical view) look at love and what keeps man from loving as God intended. She further presents solid arguments as to how human nature is conflicted by our passions and then presents us with a solution of prayer so that we might reach that, "...partially covered over but still existing image of God" (p.79) that remains with in us. She then confronts us with her image of what is God's love which she sums up by saying, "God loves beyond your dreams, extravagantly, without limit" (p.101). To love, as God wants us to love is to look within each of us and to examine our most basic of motivations in relationship with our fellow man. The early Christian mystics had insights into our humanity that exposed our human frailties as well as our ability to discern God's intent in his kingdom. Through Bonds' reflections on the early writings of the church, we see that Christian love is and has been what God's kingdom is truly and simply all about.

  4. Contemporary christians find themselves in a secular culture that demands their allegiance and conformity. As a people of faith, they find themselves capture in culture which eventually lead to the erosion and compromise of their beliefs. How does one deal with this struggle? Is it possible to love as god loves by breaking away from those cultural mores that we find most dear? Bondi addresses those questions and more as she leads us into a conversation with the early monastic who had similar challenges.

To truly love as God means incorporating a new definition of love and humility that goes beyond our present secular understanding. A dialogue with the Desert fathers and mothers enables us to weed out those stumbling blocks which hinder us from loving ourselves, our neighbors and our God. This text serves as a key of understanding how God loves and how we can imitate that love.

  5. I was assigned this book for class. My professor used it because it was written by his professor. It focuses on how the Desert Fathers and Mothers (around the years 400-600A.D.) saw God's love. It is thought provoking, because the sayings of those saints are designed to get you to think. Sometimes, what they suggest is not what you should do, but it challenges you to reflect more on God and his world.

This book has some amazing passages about God's love and about prayer...probably some of the best, most concise explanations that I have read. I actually borrowed this book from a friend, but after reading it, purchased it for my permanent library. I highly recommend this work.

2 comments about Sex Over 50 (Updated and Expanded).
  1. 'Sex over 50' is a controversial book. While the authors might think it's safe, most responsible people believe that doing it while driving at that sort of speed is both irresponsible and dangerous. To quote Mario Andretti's review of the book in 'Wheels' Magazine (September 1999), 'Show consideration for other motorists. Either turn the air-conditioning to high or pull into a Motel 8.'

  2. This a a very good book on sex and relationships. There are probably not more than a dozen pages that apply only to 50+ people. Almost any age group could profit from the advice. It is of necessity a bit general, but it is well written, comprehensive, and useful.

5 comments about Mindful Loving.
  1. Don't let this book fool you ... it's not just for romantic couples but everyone in a relationship to their family, friends, and colleagues. Grayson has lots of action-oriented excercises to help readers get the personal experience of the techniques he advocates. Spiritually-based psychotherapy with some practical examples. Mindful Loving is for those who believe that love must come from within before it can be extended without.

  2. This book is the bible for the mind. I read it, began using the practices. Now my relationships are more focused and happy.

  3. The author knows his stuff. And if I had NOT been familiar with spiritual writings (or self-help books) I might have gotten seduced by the 'logic' of the arguments or the promises for improving my relationships.

    However.

To me, the emphasis of the presentation on the workings of the mind and spirit makes only more obvious its dissociation from the body and emotions. This book will help most people with their relationships the way yoga helps people to be flexible - through dissociation. In both cases a methodical disconnection from the emotional markers held in the body creates a temporary sense of freedom and relief. But, these very markers hold in place personal history and uniqueness of one's life experience - not to mention energy trapped in suppressed emotions.

To say that I found this book pretty useless for me, is unfortunately not enough - I believe this book is dangerous in what it creates through its seductions - a sort of spiritual and emotional brain washing. Sure, it contains powerful techniques for change - so does brain washing. And. Dissociation works quite well at first - that's why people dissociate - because it works. But. Is this a choice I really want to make? No.

I don't doubt that Mr. Grayson has found a way to make the techniques in his book work for him. I also don't doubt that they worked for his clients - over time therapists polarize the clients they draw by the very nature of the approaches they refine. But. That doesn't make such an approach a good thing. The perspective which this book represents is not one I would choose for my own relationships - it would be insulting and hurtful to the people I love. I want to be close to the people I love, not float on a cloud of abstractions, basking in self-satisfied detachment. Neither would I want to attract into close relationships the kind of people this book would attract.

I'm 47 years old, married for 13 years, with two children. I am an illustrator-artist (27 years), organic grower (11years) and a licensed bodyworker (14 years). I've read spiritual writings and self-help books since I was 15, and until about 5 years ago. This book was recommended to me by a well-meaning, casual friend.

  4. This book ties together the world of physics and the mind. I have always felt that our thoughts act on the world and here is a book that goes a long way to explaining it.

It is a must have for anyone who believes it is the thought that counts; although especially important for those that don't.

  5. Henry Grayson's ideas were new to me when I read his book. I learned to hold new expectations of my relationships and marriage, learned a deeper understanding of where love comes from, and learned to seek personal responsibility for my own emotions. Reading this book improved every relationship in my life. Highly, highly recommended for those considering marriage or already in one - blissful or rocky.

  1. I received this book as a gift. I LOVED it, the pictures and the one liners were funny, true and really made me think. I had to purchase this book for my sister. We all are looking for "that one" what this man said was "I am the one" be true to yourelf. then you will find truth, love and Mr Right. Thanks!

  2. This piece of filth was written by a self-loathing male and is bought by misandric, self-centered imbeciles. It's nothing but a grocery list of men's faults and an insinuation that women, in contrast, are perfect. Even violence against men is joked about: suggestions of women shooting men and even severing their private parts.

If there were a similar book about WOMEN being awful, NOW would have sent death threats to the publishing house. Ridiculing men for about a hundred pages is no different.

This piece of sexist garbage is for the woman who says how much she hates men -- and then wonders aloud why no one will go out with her. Who in his right mind would?

  3. and unfortunately, soooo accurate! Any woman who has loved or tried to love a man will love this book. A side-splitter!

  4. First of all, those who gave this book low ratings (such as the gentleman who called it male-trashing filth) must not "get it." This isn't supposed to be deep and heavy...so of course the text is simple and to the point (it's a picture book, for heaven's sake, people). This book is not meant to seriously bash males...it's more like a caricature portrayal. Men and women are different, and we should just laugh at it because that's not going to change anytime soon. Greive helps us to do just this. As a man, I'm sure he wouldn't go around bashing men in a serious way...how many times have female comedians stood onstage poking fun at the female stereotypes of being emotional, or catty, or in love with shoes?? Sure not every female is like that, but there are certain stereotypes in our world that make for great humor when it's done in fun. This book is both humorous and inspiring. I bought it when i was single, and I also gave it as gifts to friends -- single & looking, recently single, and even married. My boyfriend saw it on my coffee table this weekend and started looking through it...he thought it was hilarious! The vintage pictures are great, and although it pokes some light fun at the guys, by the end of the book the message is serious and poignant - don't try to be anything but who you are, and in doing so everything else will fall into place in its own way and time. This is a great gift for any girlfriend going through a breakup, as well as those who are single and feeling a little disenchanted. My only regret is that there are only 5 stars, because this book deserves many more!

  5. While this is a good gag gift for a woman, one of the main themes is the weaknesses and shortcomings of men, which tended to turn me off. The second main theme is that women can take control of their life and control their own destiny, which I approved of. Constructed from a series of staged black-and-white photographs with witty captions, it takes only a short time to go through it.
While it doesn't specifically say so in the acknowledgements, it appears that these are modern photographs, yet they look like they were taken in the forties and early fifties. The clothing and hairstyles are all from that era. That was the feature that I liked most about the book.
