2 comments about The Mind Chronicles: A Visionary Guide into Past Lives.
  1. THE MIND CHRONICLES: A VISIONARY GUIDE INTO PAST LIVES combines for the first time three books of The Mind Chronicles trilogy: EYE OF THE CENTAUR, HEART OF THE CHRISTOS, and SIGNET OF ATLANTIS. Having these all under one cover assures readers a uniform and easy reading of THE MIND CHRONICLES, covering initiations and secret ceremonies of the distant past.

  2. One can read this book on two levels--or perhaps two hundred. It is smoothly and well written, and for one reading with just the conscious mind, it is fascinating, absorbing, and a wonder of a book. On another level, I found myself reading it as a remembrance of things I had forgotten in the dust of ages past. Things I had forgotten, things half remembered, lifetimes lived and not fully explored. I found myself understanding the action in the book at levels far beyond the conscious mind. Some might argue that the product of past life therapy is a group of mind fantasies, and if they do, nothing is lost. As a past life therapist myself, however, I would question the mind's ability to produce something of the awesome depth of this book as pure fantasy. Not only does this book have a profound depth and a wealth of metaphysical, spiritual and philosophical understanding, but it renders that wealth in a supremely readable format. I would give this book 6 stars if that were available.

5 comments about The Secret Language of Feelings.
  1. Calvin Banyan has a knack for explaining complex concepts simply, so anyone can understand them. He revolutionized the hypnotherapy profession by developing processes that work efficiently and consistently.

Now in this book, he opens the lid on all those feelings that we thought were bad. He explains why we feel the things we do, how to understand and interpret those feelings we prefer not to experience (feelings are often in disguise!), and then provides steps to deal with them, eliminating their negative effect. You could change your life!

I am so impressed by this book and by Calvin Banyan's other work, that it has heavily influenced my work, philosophy of life, and my own book on achieving genuine happiness.

    Highly recommended!

  2. I bought this book to better understand why I had the feeling about things that I do and it did a pretty good job of that. I'll have to read through it again to brush up but I liked it. It also helped me understand people better and why they behaved the ways they do.

  3. Firstly this is a concise book, not overburdened with theories and yes does market a little bit Banyon's system of self-hypnosis.

However, it warranting my reading it again as the concepts make a lot of sense and I feel are the reason that during a recent difficult time I was simply able to stay level and solid. Understanding the primary emotions and what they are there to tell you is of incredible value. He's not promising quick fixes either, or any way to smother them up. Instead, you are taught to listen to yourself on the level of feelings.

What is the feeling, what is the unfulfilled need and how to meet it is the general thrust. It's an interesting model, I've found its working for me. Strangely enough, if you study Albert Ellis's concepts (REBT-anything recent) you end up with a skillset that allows the use of the intellect and reason to work on feelings, yet you do not deny feelings. You engage them fully.

With REBT skills you dispute and question irrational beliefs that can cause you to go into extremes of emotion, with Banyon's model you can answer the needs that primary emotions are telling you about. The combination of the two actually gives me a way to realise which is true need and which are unreasoned and irrational. This distinction is of immense value and give you the time to respond in the best way you know how.

Thank you to the author, he has done a great job.

  4. I was so hoping this book would be so much more than what it was,
    Very dissappointing.
I would not recommend this book for anyone to buy, it has nothing new to even offer

  5. I was truly impressed by the simplicity of the message. It is concise and straightforward, easy to read, and has the beauty that comes with speaking the truth in a simple, meaningful way.

It sums up in a nutshell, much of the emotional detective work that is at the heart of hynoanalysis. It looks at the causes of negative feelings, frustration and depression. It brings this whole chain of meaning into simple, clear focus. It discusses primary feelings, such as anger, fear, guilt, etc., and then moves on to secondary feelings - frustration. Ultimately, the tertiary effect of these is depression, the emotional defense that gets us to back off and stop beating our head against the wall.

But the best thing about it was the focus it brought to my own life.
Each of us has issues to deal with, pressures at work, home, etc. They are the things in life over which we have no control, but which bring up negative emotions within us. In alot of ways, this helped me bring the dynamics of feelings about these into focus.

Cal has a number of exercises in his book, called the 1-2-3 process:
    1) Identify (and name) the feeling behind the emotion
    2) Identify the primary cause
    3) Find a way to deal with the primary casue

In alot of ways, these steps may not be as simple as they might sound, but they make a great framework for awareness and healing.

He has exercises for the whole spectrum of at-issue feelings, as described above. But the bottom line is that feelings - even negative ones - are good. We can learn from them. They are a signal that something in our lives needs to change.

Ultimately, I found this to be both a great primer for use with my own hypnotherapy clients clients, and a guide to dealing with various BS'ish things that crop up in daily life. In short, The Secret Language of Feelings is a simple, beautiful study of the dynamics behind our emotions, something that anyone can use both at an intellectual level, and in their own self-healing work.

3 comments about Living Life! Anxiety and Stress Free: Reduce Stress through Hypnosis.

  1. This CD "Living Life! Anxiety and Stress Free" is truly amazing!
I absolutely felt more relaxed and stressed free after listening to this CD. I cannot believe what a difference it made.I HIGHLY recommend this product.

  2. I purchased 2 hypnosis and relaxation CD's through Amazon; "Eliminate TMJ and Teeth Grinding", by Scott Sulak and this one. The TMJ CD was a bust, but this CD was wonderful! I've been struggling with panic attacks and anxiety for 6 months now. After a 9 week bout with Paxil and several attempted "natural" remedies, what seems to work the best (for me) is good old fashioned cognitive therapy and this hypnosis CD. I do occasionally find myself falling asleep throughout this recording, but there is an insert that states you will still be able to subconsciously take in Trevor's suggestions. After 2 weeks, I feel less anxious and like I have some control over my worrying. This CD won't "cure" you overnight and I would suggest cognitive therapy in conjunction with, but I give this CD 5 stars as a place to start.

  3. I'd previously purchased another CD from him for weight-loss, and while the effects were limited did find the CD relaxing. So when my anxiety returned after years of living fairly free of it I decided to give this one a try.

I'm very pleased with the results. After using for less than 2 weeks it has greatly reduced my anxiety. My husband has even caught me preforming the anxiety relieving trigger subconsciously on a few occasions, letting me know that this is working on a deeper level.

    I definitely recommend this CD.

5 comments about The Self-Hypnosis Kit.
  1. As a firm disbeleiver in hypnosis, hypnotherapy and NLP which I formly called "junk science". I have truley been converted. If you are interested in how any of these disiplines listed above can help you then I urge you to start with this kit. Read the book then listen to the tape. After only two sessions, I found myself totally amazed with the effects of hypnosis. My first concern was, since I don't smoke, am not overweight, don't drink to access or have any other overt bad habits, I wondered what could this tape possibly do for me. I was stunned, I turned on the tape, started listening and awoke from the session 20 minutes later totaly refreshed, stress free and totally relaxed ( just like the hypnotist had directed ).Undersatand, I didn't even realize I had been hypnotised!I thought I was sitting on a bench in a beautilful garden relaxing ( also as directed by the hypnotist on the tape). The voice ( a woman with an English acent )on the tape has a wonderful calming effect.
As I said, if you are interested in what hypnosis could do for youd-start here as I did. You will be simply amazed!....and she teaches you how to induce yourself into self-hypnosis too!

  2. Trying various hypnosis/meditation items, I would say that this product has induced one of the deepest hypnotic state or relaxed sensation I have experienced. However, I personally have a little bit of difficulty with the procedure to bring myself to the state. Having to keep eyes high on a spot for a long time is somewhat more physically enduring than other tactics out there. So, I would say, it works, but a little bit hard physically. I would like to find other methods to induce the deep relaxed state without hardship, and use the suggestive stuff that was mentioned in this book.

  3. This book's title accurately describes the content and the book does focus on self-hypnosis only. I bought it because it included the tape, but the tape wasn't as much help as I'd expected which is the reason I gave it 4 stars. The tape uses the muscle by muscle strategy for relaxation which just doesn't work well for me. The book is clear, gives good affirmations, and explains things well.

  4. Beware. This item DOES NOT come with the tape described. It is a separate item that costs much more. The book is WORTHLESS without the tape. I feel more than a little ripped off. The reviews all talked in varying terms about the value of the tape, so one might assume that the tape comes with. If you get the book by itself, it has virtually no value--it all seems to be centered on telling you how to USE THE TAPE. Aside from some mildly interesting histories on hypnosis, I have relegated this to my "bad judgement" shelf. By the way, a book by itself is NOT A "KIT".

  5. This kit is great for those who are looking to try self hypnosis for the first time. The only problem is it would be nice if it was updated with a CD rather than the cassette. I find that the book and the tape compliment each other well and have had much success with using this program.

5 comments about Self-Hypnotism: The Technique and Its Use in Daily Living (Signet).
  1. Leslie Lecron is no beginner in the field of hynosis. He's written several books on the subject and is an established and highly qualified authority on the subject.

Over the years, I have been interested in this subject. Everyone uses hypnotic suggestion on themselves, whenever they tell themselves (or others) that they are "no good" at something, or that they've "always been able to" do some feat. Those are both examples of negative and positive suggestion (self-hypnosis).

But, with this book you can go much further. You can learn techniques which will enrich your life, heal certain illnesses, and generally inprove your situation. Tried and true methods.

    I recommend it.

    Joseph (Joe) Pierre

  2. Having practiced Self-Hypnosis (and Hypnosis) for almost fifty
years, I would have to say that in my experience as a professional that Leslie LeCron's book may be slightly too technical for some students (but remember his profession)...I recommend the book as an excellent source on the subject, having
recommended it for over 20 years to my clients! Wide ranging
    and informative!

  3. Some of the psychology in this book is dated. For example, the author frequently refers to homosexuality as a disorder so dire that extensive therapy is preferable over hypnosis.

The author frequently throws out case studies, antecedents and statistics to back up his claims, but not once are these properly cited. Had there been proper documentation, the otherwise ridiculous claims that breast sizes can be enlarged with hypnosis (page 106) would be easier to swallow.

  4. First published in 1964, Leslie LeCron's "Self Hypnotism" may be dated in spots, but it remains a remarkably throrough introduction to hypnosis for the general reader. It's easy to see why this practical self-help manual remains in print. Before receiving training in hypnotherapy I read a number of older, popular books on hypnosis, but this was the one that really helped me appreciate and experience its practical application. LeCron's writing style was warm, conversational and refreshingly free of jargon, even in his later (1968) textbook, "Clinical Hypnotherapy" with gynecologist co-author David B. Cheek.

LeCron was a pioneer in the hypnotherapeutic use of ideomotor responses with Chevreul's pendulum and/or finger signals. Chapter Two of "Self-Hypnotism" provides a basic overview of ideomotor communication with the personal subconscious. Chapter Six, "Eliminating Emotional Troubles From Your Life," outlines basic psychodynamic and behaviorist principles along with LeCron's "Seven Most Common Factor Causing Emotional Troubles and Illnesses." (M. Gerald Edelstein would later adapt these "Seven Factors" in his 1981 "Trauma, Trance, and Transformation.") Other topics covered in this user-friendly book include Emile Coué's "laws of suggestion," the protective nature of the subconscious, how belief effects emotional well-being, and the therapeutic value of relaxation. A section entitled "You've been self-hypnotized many times" may help allay irrational fears of hypnosis by identifying several everyday experiences such as daydreaming and so-called "highway hypnosis" that are essentially hypnotic states.

  5. This book takes on self hypnotism in a very straight forward and logical manner that really works. There are numerous case studies throughout, and various exercises to test the methods, but no fluff and filler. Also, it's very easy to read, not boring or dry like some other books on the topic. The tone of some passages come off as somewhat dated, but I think it adds a little charm and is mildly refreshing for a topic that can either be very clinical or too whimsical. The methods of how to directly communicate with the subconscious mind while fully awake were worth the price of the book alone.

Highly recommended for anyone looking into self-hypnosis.

  1. These CD's are an easy listen filled with wonderfully phrased, motivational words. Glenn's Australian accent is a pleasure to listen to. Places on the CD have music as well that accompanies the voice. I LOVE these CD's and own most of them. If you live in the states you may hear an occassional terminology that is not common in the U.S. (Example, in the weight series he uses a weight measurement of a 'stone' which is a British term that represents 14 pounds). This happen rarely and certainly does not detract from the message presented in any of Glenn's CD's. You can't really listen to these in the car as they are a little hypnotic so be sure you are in a stress free mind set and location when you listen to any of therse CD's. I felt they were worth every penny.

  2. This meditation cd is better than I had hoped for. Of all hypnosis cd's I listen to, this one provides me the greatest relaxation.

  3. This is the best of Glenn Harrold's CD's. Highly recommend. After using CD, I noticed a difference in how I feel. Glenn Harrold's voice is soothing and high inducive for a good meditation experience.

  4. If you're just starting to explore this arena, and you need guided imagery, this is an excellent c.d. Headphones are recommended and I would say they are a "must". Why? Because the full benefit of the c.d. is very diminished without them. This is a finely crafted, well executed and technically balanced production.

Why only 4 stars then? I find the opening music and his accent irritating - but - you overcome those factors by focusing on what you purchased the c.d. for, and if you don't, then you are missing the point of buying it.

  5. I listen to this CD almost nightly. So far, I've had many visions where I see very clear, video-like scenes play out in front of me while I have my eyes closed. One scene, I saw an old town with one fast moving person and the view narrowing on that individual. Another one I saw three moving viking like ships swaying side to side. I believe my third eye has opened. Another time I had an out of body experience that lasted the duration of the second track. I floated to the top of the ceiling then floated down beyond my body. I opened my eyes and saw a room full of electric guitars and folding chairs. I meandered around the room and ended up in another place with Egyptian hieropglyphics and drawings on two walls and on the ceiling. I heard the CD counting down and I returned to my physical body.

5 comments about Sham: How the Self-Help Movement Made America Helpless.
  1. What is the market for self help books? According to Sham a survey of people who reads books about sparking up your sex life had some odd results. Rather than the athletes of the bedroom being the primary market, those who buy self help sex books are those with no real sex life at all. Reading such books gives them a dream of what might possibly be but what inevitably isn't. Another survey suggests that the greatest indicator of who will buy a self-help book is someone who has bought one in the last 18 months. This of course suggests that they are not that effective. Of course whilst they are not effective in changing people they are important in maintaining peoples dreams of change and allowing them to live in a dream world of eventual success.

One of the recent developments in the self-help industry has been the thought that lessons learned in sports transfer to the organisational field. A large number of sportsmen will write self-help books that focus on how their winning attitude has brought success. Of course their attitude or confidence is one aspect of their success. Others might be their strength, their hand eye coordination and their speed. In fact their sporting ability may well be one of the things, which has led them to have confidence and over time allowed them to develop their winning attitude. The key thing of course is why second tier sportsmen did not go as well? Was it their attitude was below that of the first rank or was it their ability? If their attitude was not the determinate then any book about thinking like a winner ain't going to get anyone anywhere. The reality is that in any form of endeavour life skills are the important things and whilst a bit of motivation might put someone on the path to gaining skills it is not just about attitude.

The irony is of course that in sports, nowadays measurement is one of the key coaching tools. Most parts of performance are benchmarked its not about talk it is about performance and measuring it. Yet with the transfer of sports motivation to the management field there is not benchmarking or measurement. Thus one thinks that the motivational school is something which helps develop a fantasy of success rather than doing anything concrete.

The book also looks at the disease model of motivation. This is one that is used in the treatment of addictions and things like weight loss. Does this model work? Alcoholics anonymous is a model of substance abuse treatment which has spread to other areas as evidenced by such organisations as Narcotics Anonymous. The cure rate of AA is about 42%. However the spontaneous cure rate is 42% to 82%. That is people who do not go to AA do better than those who do. In fact the author suggests that people who decide to give up drugs or alcohol (or even lose weight) and have some degree of motivation do better than being on a program. The AA notion of alcoholism being a disease is thus simply wrong and models of treatment built around it do not perform.

In fact modern thought is that alcoholism is not something which occurs in isolation. It may occur in a context of depression, loneliness and social isolation. Getting on top of alcoholism may thus need more than AA meetings. It might require some medical intervention and perhaps counselling to develop other life skills rather than the sorts of pledges which occur at AA.

Having said all this till about two thirds through the book one was left with the impression that what was said was a good critique of a multi million dollar industry in the US. However the last third or so of the book is a slightly unfocused libertarian rant about how the negative aspects of the self help industry have infected public thinking. This has led to a decline in the ability of institutions to do their job. Whilst one can have some sympathy with the targets there was an inability of the writer to show any link to the problems he sees in the self help industry infecting the wider attitudes. Apart from this slight turn off not a bad book.

  2. When I first read the title of this book I was really excited and knew I wanted this book to be in the top of my library as a reference. Unfortunately, after reading the first couple of pages my hopes had quickly dwindled. This book was very hard for me to want to keep reading. I found myself reading for a few minutes, then stopping, and, this continued for 8 chapters when all hell broke loose. The table of contents says this book is 11 chapters and then a conclusion. Well sorry to dissapoint, but, after wrestling through 8 chapters I skimmed to chapter 9 and decided enough is enough and here's why: Selerno seems to think that AA, NA, and, any other "A" seem to be a sham because these programs say that, alcohol, drugs, and whatever the disease is, is a life long addiction. Well let's put this in a real world context. Let's pretend you want to get in shape. Today you run a mile and you say, "hey I ran a mile, tommorow I'll run 1 1/2". You keep running until one day you say, "I am up to 5 miles no need to keep running because I am in shape now". Sounds silly doesn't it(you don't ever stop exercising). Mr. Selerno seems to think that cold turkey is better than going to 12 steps. For some maybe that's true, but, he wants to discount the whole program as a sham. Also, let me back up a few chapters. He talks about Suze Orman being a Sham, (or sham in the making) because she works with a company who sells insurance. Even though, she really is a financial planner and rose through the ranks to get where she is? Here is a snippet, page 62-63," Suzy's choice, long term care insurance is issued through GE Financial and sold on her website and QVC....would she be more apt to spin in a favorable light regardless of any changes....time will tell. It'll be interesting to see whether Orman herself does".

Mr. Selerno the only person this will be interesting to is you. You is waiting for failure, so, you can have the, "aha moment", and say that you is the know all and be all of "it" all.
There is so much stuff this guy has in this book that is flawed that I would have to write a short 15 page report to explain it all and I didn't even read all of the book!! He also talks about oher people who are shamsters as if you can be a bum off the street and step into millions with noskill what so ever. This book is none engaging, exaggerated, and nitpicky. My suggestion is don't even read this book, but, if you want to waste your time, pick up from the library.

  3. This book is worth reading, but selectively. As others have said, the book is uneven. At times Salerno is right on, such as when he dresses down some of the gurus (like Dr. Laura), sports metaphors, and medical quackery. At other points, his opinions get the better of him (overuse of Phil McGraw's ex-wife as a source, largely baseless criticism of Suze Orman, and overstating the power of SHAM).

More surprising to me is his ignorance of religion. (Disclaimer: I go to church every week.) I was struck between the similarities of religious dogma and SHAM dogma, and he ignores this connection. I could understand a reluctance to tread into those waters, but I don't think it's excusable to ignore how televangelists (Jimmy Swaggart types) relate to SHAM.

In summary, this is a decent read. I found it worthwhile to wade through the bad sections to get to the good material. But because of the book's weaknesses, I give it a weak "thumb up."

  4. Here's why you should read SHAM: (1) it's well written and funny; and (2) it'll make you think.

Now WHAT it makes you think may be, 'this guy is totally wrong!' But trying to articulate WHY will be an stimulating exercise. And you may discover that the person sitting next to you responds the same way -- but to a different chapter. It's a very provoking book, and there's something to offend everybody.

One interesting thing about the book is the way it develops from from the beginning (frothy, biting, potted biographies of clay-footed gurus) to the end (sweeping social diatribe in something of the Harold Bloom mould). It's a seductive rhetorical device, and Salerno pulls it off pretty well.

Another interesting thing is the use, and abuse, of references. Other Amazon reviewers have gone into some detail about this. One subject I particularly noticed needing more attention was the role of the AIDS crisis and GMHC in the development of the patients' rights movement and the way this contributed to breast cancer advocacy and then filtered into the larger culture. Whatever your own areas of interest, you'll notice things like this. On the other hand, cover them all and you've got a ten thousand page book. To my mind, there was enough substance to hold it together, even if each of the later chapters could be expanded into a book of its own and debated for several years.

Your colleague who watches Dr. Phil and buys Suze Orman's financial products? Don't give it to them, it won't change their mind. What would? But your friend who says, "isn't it all just harmless fun" and "don't some people really benefit from self help"? Do give SHAM to them. Neither they, nor you, will agree with all Slaerno's arguments, but you'll both be more convinced, and more able to articulate, why this kind of money-driven wooly headed drivel is bad for us all.

  5. I found Steve Salerno gave an in-depth overview of how folks can get black holed in the self improvement movement while not experiencing any improvement themselves but maybe some were a bit off topic. I was amazed about how AA is not accountable of their procedures and how alcoholism became classified as an illness because the medical profession would makes billions of $ in insurance claims, etc. However, I thought some of the political examples in the latter part of the book were not so relevant and in defence of SHAM, some of the things they actual do are good and useable!

  1. There isn't much on either side of the tape.

And he speaks too quickly for you to mentally repeat what he says.

And at the end there is a wake up command that I disliked until I learned to stop the tape just before it & use it in the morning.

I personally didn't like his directions to go to the beach to feel the sun, or take a shower to feel energy.

But I'm listening to it until I can find a better one.

So, it works, I'm glad I got it.

5 comments about The Gentle Art of Blessing: Living One's Spirituality in Everyday Life.
  1. This book is wonderful. I recommend it to everyone regardless of religious persuasion. If each person could put in to practice the ideas in this book, it could transform society.

  2. this book has helped me to learn about the how's of blessing.. I learned alot and felt inspired to bless more of my everyday life..

    loved it.

  3. On page 11, the author writes, "As you walk, bless the city in which you live, its government and teachers, its nurses and street sweepers, its children and bankers, its priests and prostitutes. The minute anyone expresses the least aggravation or unkindness to you, respond with a blessing: Bless them totally, sincerely, joyfully - for such blessings are a shield that protects them from the ignorance of their misdeed and deflects that arrow that was aimed at you."

I wish I could give an all-encompassing, "that's great, I loved it" review on this book, but I'm struggling with Pradevand's comments that the best and most potent response to aggression is blessing.

Less than three days ago, 32 students were murdered at a once-beautiful college in the midst of the Blue Ridge mountains. There are times when you must be prepared to go toe to toe with evil and deal it a fatal blow. Like Pradervand, I believe that each of God's children have the potential and ability to express Her purity and goodness and love, but I also believe that some of God's children would rather face annihilation than surrender their association with pure evil.

Jesus never taught us that we should "see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil." He prayed and *then* he threw over the moneychanger's tables. He cursed the fig tree, sent the swine to their death over the hill, etc. He said to his beloved disciple Peter, "get thee behind me Satan."

Jesus' predominant activity was blessing, but from my reading of various scriptures and exegeses, he also did some cursing!

The Bible records several instances when Jesus got angry. His anger was unselfish and short-lived, but there were times when he "let people have it."

So, if you can move through Pradervand's book with that in mind, I do recommend it as a good read. It's stuffed full of inspiring messages and powerful anecdotes on the practical application of spiritual laws to restore peace and harmony to one's soul. I also highly recommend Peck's book, "People of The Lie," which is one of the best books I've ever read about dealing with evil people. Perhaps these two books should be read together.

  4. I love this book! As soon as I finished it, I started to read it again. In practicing blessing in the way the author explains it, I've seen my own (justifiable) anger and animosity towards people who have hurt me or damaged my life melt away.

I don't think the author means that we shouldn't carry through if some evil needs to be addressed, but it makes it possible to do so objectively and without hate.

The key, in my thought, is that this book made me see that I have to put my spiritual convictions into practice all the time and toward everyone...I can't get away with just praying in a general sense and then going about my day and continuing to feel contentious towards someone, even when merited.

  5. The first two chapters held my attention well. The principle is life changing, this book is not. The author quotes many others to substantiate his stories, rather than deeply developing the theme and supporting it with quotes. Became repetitious while using different words.

For the average reader who is seeking spiritual development, the title is captivating. The book could support this journey by proposing thoughtful questions during each chapter to help the reader focus the information to his/her self.
    A big disappointment to me.

  1. I enjoy turning this tape on before I go to bed each night. I feel like it's helping me with my concentration. The voice is pleasant to listen to, and is not too much of a droan. I am not sure that my memory has increased at all; but it does boost your self confidence in your ability to retain new info. B.
