  1. In this book, you are provided with several self hypnosis "scripts" to record onto a tape, in your own voice. I recorded the weight loss script a little over a week ago, and I, an avid chocoholic, have not had a bite of chocolate since! I'm no longer snacking between meals, I'm not tempted by sweets, and I couldn't be happier. There is at least one script in this book for everyone. The wording is wonderful, very positive, and extremely effective.

  2. -
Ya I can say that. You will never find this kind of book on self hypnosis.

There is a very brief introduction about Self-Hypnosis.Then 23 Scripts are given on different situation of life to work on.

Each script ends in about 30 minutes.Author suggests us to record these scripts in our own voice & listen to them according to our need.

I think this is a best idea for Self Hypnosis. Each Script starts with relaxation then Visualisation & then suggestion.

This is Great, like using the power of your own voice for your better life.I was wondering Why I didnt got this idea before?

  3. I was very impressed with the scripts provided in this book. The author definitely knows his way around the subconscious mind.

This book contains many useful scripts, and is free of personal bias or any other type of preachy stuff. If you read a lot of hypnosis material, you know that is a rare combination.

Easy to use, it's a great start for a beginner!

5 comments about The Secrets of Self-Hypnosis: Harnessing the Power of Your Unconscious Mind.
  1. Autosuggestion / power of thoughts / self-hypnosis is the subject of this book. And there are better books available of the subject. Just take a look at my other reviews. After reading other books about the subject I am not sure if the author really understood the concept of autosuggestion. There's so much weight on the word 'hypnosis' in this book. Remember Emile Coue who found out that a state of hypnosis was not even necessary in his psychiatric healing methods.

  2. Some people have said in their reviews that this book is life changing, and I suppose I have to agree because it is the first book I bought on self hypnosis before deciding to become a Hypnotherapist.

My initial reaction was that it was a great book and very comprehensive in the self hypnosis process. But I have now changed my opinion slightly because of all the other reading on the subject I have done.

The detailed explanation of the self hypnosis technique is very thorough and the finer points about how to word the suggestions so that you don't pick up anything that doesn't fully help you is left out on every other book I've read on self hypnosis.

Another great chapter is on how to record your scripts to CD which also is explained in detail.

    But...

This book appears to have been put together in a hurry because in some places it does not flow from subject to subject. Like the author has chucked in some content as a bit of filler to pad the book out.

Another reason the book looks hastily done is that it has a great number of spelling mistakes and doesn't look like it was professionally proof read or edited.

These small flaws, however, do not take away from the fact that this book is better than the majority of self hypnosis texts in view of content. It is very thorough and detailed without confusing a beginner like I was when I first read it.

  3. Eason is not the best in the writing department but his info is very user friendly. I'm not one to do a lot of memorization, which he asks you to do in some parts, but he made it very simple through visual association. I tried one session to attract the perfect house, in the perfect place at the perfect price and now I'm sitting in it as I write. Go figure... Unfortunately that was the last thing I worked on out of this book - I guess I should get back on the Eason trail.

  4. This book is fantastic. You read all these books about NLP and quick persuasion and stuff like that but they never get really in depth with the topic of hypnosis or anything like that. You only get the over view of hypnosis and the point where the mind changes state or goes on auto pilot. This book on the other hand does not. It talks about hypnosis and the best bit is that it gives you steps on how to get into self hypnosis and if you were going to do it to someone else. After creating one of my own sessions and seeing if I could get into hypnosis did it work? Yes it did only because I wanted it too. That is the key! If you think that when you buy this book and think once you have done one of the sessions out of this book you will lose weight or give up smoking, no it doesn't work like that hypnosis only works if you want it to work. This books explains that as well. It if great to learn hypnosis and understand it better by actually being put into hypnosis.
Get the book and give it a try.

  5. This book is verrrrrry well writen with a gooood sens of humour.Clear, Consis and to the point. Even with his funny jokes you can easily understand and applied the principles of Self-Hypnosis.

  1. If you are plagued with a lack of self-confidence, try this CD. It is not a panacea, but I definitely experienced what can best be described as a mind switch. Mr. Harrold's soft, calm voice is so soothing, and his words are reassuring and comforting.

Am I brimming with cocky self-confidence yet? No, I hope I never will be, and I don't think that is the point of this exercise. But for the first time in years, I feel as if I am on my way to a new (and definitely more confident) way of approaching my life.

As a complement to this CD, I can also recommend "Self Healing with Guided Imagery" by Andrew Weil and Martin Rossman, and "Beverly Hills Hypnosis - Motivation to Move".

Good luck in your own personal quest to find the elusive life balance so many of us seek.

  2. This CD is very relaxing and it has really helped improve my self confidence. It is also very relaxing. It is one of the best CD's for building self confidence that I have used. You will enjoy this CD.

  3. I own five CDs by Glenn Harrold. Develop Your Self Confidence (Diviniti) (Diviniti) and Creating Inner Peace & Calm are my two favorites. What I especially like about Develop Your Self Confidence (Diviniti) (Diviniti) is that it is makes no attempt to be anything other than what it is. The music doesn't intrude. The speaker (Glenn Harrold) delivers the hypnotic words in a not-overly-dramatic tone which allows me to use the CD to relax every day, if I wish, without becoming bored with it. And I've been using this CD every week for about three years.

The messages on the CD are unquestionably uplifting and completely logical.

The second sequence (roughly 28 minutes long) is even more unintrusive than the first. It's somewhat similar to the first sequence on Glenn's CD Deep Sleep (Diviniti) (Diviniti) in that it conjurs up few images to stir your imagination and relies more on calming, very slightly confusing - i.e. mesmerizing - words. Since, once a CD has finished playing, my CD player shuts itself off, I use this second sequence by itself to help me relax as I drift off to sleep at night.

Develop Your Self Confidence (Diviniti) (Diviniti) is a subtle masterpiece, useful anytime of day or night when you just want to let go.

  4. These CD's are an easy listen filled with wonderfully phrased, motivational words. Glenn's Australian accent is a pleasure to listen to. Places on the CD have music as well that accompanies the voice. I LOVE these CD's and own most of them. If you live in the states you may hear an occassional terminology that is not common in the U.S. (Example, in the weight series he uses a weight measurement of a 'stone' which is a British term that represents 14 pounds). This happen rarely and certainly does not detract from the message presented in any of Glenn's CD's. You can't really listen to these in the car as they are a little hypnotic so be sure you are in a stress free mind set and location when you listen to any of therse CD's. I felt they were worth every penny.

  5. Pros:
    Very professionally recorded
Mr. Harrold is clearly experienced in the process of hypnotherapy

    Cons:
For me, it took a few sessions to allow my "unconscious mind" to get used to Mr. Harrold's accent.
You must feel assured that you will not be disturbed or interrupted when you listen to this CD. For me, this diminished the quality of the sessions (not really a con, I guess).

Verdict: Overall, I found this CD to be useful and genuinely effective at improving my self-confidence. I feel I have become more relaxed and at ease, though the changes are indeed very subtle. I recommend this product and also recommend that the user go into the sessions with an open mind and a willingness to allow the process a chance at succeeding.

  1. I had gone to a Hypnotherapist before to lose weight and did not have much luck. However, I decided to try Trevor's method...and it works!! My eating habits changed dramatically after only listening to the cd twice. It is the most relaxing experience I have ever had. This cd allows you to fall asleep, so I listen to it while I am going to bed. It says that even if you do fall asleep your sibconcious will receive the messages that Trevor sends, without a doubt, it does! I am really amazed by this cd! I am getting ready to order his cd's for exercise and to quit smoking.

    Thank you Trevor!!!

  2. This didnt work for me. Maybe because everytime I turned it on I fell asleep. Good way to fall asleep if you are having trouble. Bad way to lose weight.

  3. After having so much success with Trevor's cd "Your Power Within" I had to try "Relax Your Way to Thin." I've lost 17 pounds so far and it is fantastic! I've never wanted to say I'm on a "diet" and I didn't really want to change my eating habits. But, after listening to the cd, my whole attitude about food and healty eating habits started changing. It made me realize that I wasn't denying myself anything by eating healthier, I was actually giving myself more. The weight started coming off, I'm feeling great and I'm sleeping soundly. Awesome CD, I highly recommend it for anyone wanting to loose weight.

  4. I would have to disagree with Karen K who said the voice and music were irratating. I found the narrators' voice to be extremely soothing and the music to be beneficial and relaxing. In fact, for all the hypnosis tapes I've ever used, this is by far the most relaxing. I'm able to go into an extremely deep trance and always come out with the suggestion at the end (that's how I know I didn't just fall asleep). I only gave it 4 stars so far, but will update it in a couple of weeks when I see how well it works. I've been using it twice a day for two days, today is the third, and haven't seen any changes in my appetite or eating yet. It says to use it for 21 days. I don't know if that means you'll only see significant results after 21 days, or what, but I'll keep this review updated to let you know if I've lost any weight. If not, then at least I have had some incredibly relaxing sessions while I'm listening to the tape.

Day Five: I found when I went to the market I chose only healthy foods and stayed away from the junk food without even thinking about it. I checked the fat content on all food even if it said "light" or "low fat." When I saw chocolate and thought I'd like some it was immediately followed up with the thought that I didn't want to buy it. The hardest part is getting out of the store without the junk in the cart. At home, I've noticed I have not wanted to eat between meals.

  5. Relax Your Way to Thin! Hypnosis Weight Loss MotivationI was very skeptical about trying this, but a friend of mine went to a hypotist and lost 40 lbs. I thought I would try it on CD as I had trouble "sticking to" a diet, but was too skeptical to invest the $200 my friend paid her hypnotist. The first week I actually lost 4lbs without conciously being aware of even dieting. I noticed I seem less hungry and am not attracted to the junk food I used to eat too much of. I thought it sounded kind of off the wall to try loosing weight this way, but it has really made a difference and I would recomend it to anyone. I have been listening to it for 2 weeks and have lost a total of 6lbs without really trying.

  1. Maybe this book does help becuase I was totally taken in by the marketing hype describing the book.

First, this book has quite a lot of the shortcomings of many self-published books -- rampant typos, grammatical errors and unverifiable testamonials followed by unsubstantiated anecdotes sprinkled with factual errors.

Second, it's regurgitated, dumbed down NLP for the masses.

Third, the information is dated although presented as "new" and "cutting edge".

There are many other books on NLP and body language that are a lot more helpful. Don't buy this book, especially at its inflated price. That's part of the ploy. If it costs so much it must have the "good stuff" in it, right? Wrong!

I'm just very disappointed to be told that I need to lose weight, grow taller and dress for success to get my subliminal message across to make the sale.

  2. Want to IMPROVE Your Life? Be better at your Job? Go deeper in to Kevin Hogans work after reading some of his other books (like Pyschology of Persuasion)? Then this is the logical next step for you....unless you are lucky enough to attend one of his seminars in person! This is the next best thing!!! Because his work is transformational! I wasn't even aware of all the changes taking place in my life until other people started commenting on them...people have even told me that I LOOK different (as in younger and more vibrant), but I AM aware that I am making more money and I am happier!! And it began about two years ago when I started reading and applying Kevin Hogan's work....and Covert Hypnosis is the latest. Read it only if you, too are ready to make life changing leaps forward!!! Ahd then as you apply it, watch for the inevitable changes to occur around you!! You will be glad you did. Don't thank me, thank Kevin.

  3. This is a good book with quality information. Kevin Hogan has written several good books on persuasion. I have read Psychology of Persuasion, Covert Persuasion and Covert Hypnosis in that order. Although a decent amount of the information in this book is covered in Covert Persuasion, there is a substantial amount of new information and tactics that can be applied to many situations in life. Overall this is a nice read for someone that would like to raise the bar at work and elsewhere.
Working in the Formula Race Car of Sales "metaphorically speaking" anything that can give me an edge is worth looking at.

    Good job again Kevin

  4. I have read most of the book. I won't say that it is useless, but that it is rather disapointing. NLP is a very powerful set of practices for influencing other people. The name of the book is the one thing the author did that succeeded in convincing me to buy this book. The book is mainly about how to become a successful salesperson, almost nothing about other practices of covert hypnosis. Thus the name of the book suggests a wider scope. Throughout the book, the author seem to plant the messages "buy my other stuff" and "use my knowlege", and he seems to do it in a very ineffective way. If at least he was able to use covert hypnosis more effectively for that, the way Bandler and Grider (the original developers of NLP) did, then I would be tempted to believe I can learn a lot more from him.

Yet, the book is not useless. Some of the things written in this book are deep understanding of the selling business.

  5. Kevin helps the reading understand what drives a person to make a decision. Reading this book can help with selling to people by getting to know what drives them. Helpful for building rapport with others. A must read for anyone wanting to increase your confidence with selling products and services. www.changing-lanes.com

  1. I had such great success with Glenn Harrold's Deep Sleep CD (see my review), I had high hopes for this one. I am sad to say I did not have success.

I can only guess, but I think that the message is not a good fit for me. The message is negative, along the lines of "do not have yucky sweet things". It was not a message that resonated with me. I tried it for months with no results.

I more recently have purchased the much more costly series of CDs from Roberta Temes "Enjoying Weight Loss". I find myself much more drawn to her more positive approach and I AM finding modest success. Moreover I have a much more upbeat outlook, and find myself taking positive steps without resistance. (Roberta has a heavy New York accent which was very grating to me, but I have gotten used to it, sort of...)

Good luck to you whatever you try.

  2. Glenn Harrold has a good voice, a thick British accent (which is OK with me), and is excellent at self-hypnosis. His CD includes very positive eating and exercising affirmations. There are two sections on the CD, I like the second better than the first. The only downsides are the synthesizer trumpet music in the introduction of the first section. Once you get past that section, however, the rest of the music is very peaceful and relaxing. The only other downside is the vernacular. He says "I enjoy taking exercise." Americans would say "I enjoy exercising." A minor point, but it's a bit distracting in that section of the CD. I would recommend this CD as a dieting and motivational aid. It is also helpful for relaxing, even if you don't use it for the other reasons.

  3. Most hypno-subliminal CD's are by egocentric perfect-self gurus and full of overly positive nonsense. The therapist on this CD has a nice voice, British but completely audible by Yankees. In face, his voice is welcoming and soothing, the relaxation bit is effective and a great way to fall asleep and let the CD do its work. I think its worth the $ and time will tell if it has a drastic effect on my attempt to lose weight but I do find myself wanting to listen to it. The messages are great and I believe this to be the first one of its kind I didnt regret after listening. Ignore the fancy covers and smiles on the overpaid overly enthusiastic motivational speakers and try this first.

  4. I have tried two other similiar CDs and this one is the best. I lost 5 pounds without trying or thinking about it. When I stopped listening for a couple of months, sure enough, I gained it back. It's very relaxing as well.

  5. Its hard for a hypnotist that sells's CD's for mass consumption to make a specialized tape. This is a good tape but I preferred Mind Over Platter which I felt was more specific to women. This tape will taper mindless eating though.

  1. I've only recently discovered the work of Glenn Harold. This is one of his most popular CDs and there is a good reason why. I like this CD mainly because there is no b.s. like on so many others. Everything is straight to the point, first you relax, then some positive affirmations are suggested to your unconscious mind which has to absorb them and start executing. One drawback is that I find he speaks a little too fast and leaves no time for the material to sink in. Perhaps if the pace was a bit slower, I would've given this CD five stars. Overall, good starting point for hypnosis exploration.

  2. I own several of Glenn Harrold's CDs. I've tried many other relaxation/hypnosis products over the years and Glenn Harrold's are by far-and-away the best I've heard. As many of the other reviews have pointed out, the production values on these CDs are extraordinary, but that's not what makes them special. What makes these CDs special is how good they leave you FEELING.

Many of the other hypnosis recordings I've tried would either put me to sleep half of the time or just feel like a chore to listen to. Glenn Harrold's CDs actually make for a very enjoyable and pleasant listening experience. And regardless of how I felt before hand, I'm always left feeling refreshed, serene and on an "even keel".

If you're looking to purchase just one hypnosis title, make it one of Glenn Harrold's. You will not be disappointed.

  3. His voice an proper grammar have taken a while for me to get used to without smiling. By the second track I am often out. Whether my life is changing I will have to keep you all posted.
    ;-)

  4. These CD's are an easy listen filled with wonderfully phrased, motivational words. Glenn's Australian accent is a pleasure to listen to. 5. Glenn Harold's voice is hypnotic and relaxing to listen to.

The echoes, music and other special effects used in this cd really helps, by the next day I catch myself restating the affirmations in my mind.

(I'll be purchasing more of Glenn Ford's hypnosis!)

5 comments about The Angry Heart: Overcoming Borderline and Addictive Disorders : An Interactive Self-Help Guide.
  1. As a mental health therapist who specializes in treating BPD, I use this book in my BPD Group Therapy. The women may not recognize their own behaviors in themselves, but they can see their behaviors in others. The excerises are great and when done in a group setting, they offer support and validation from other members.

Although other research or treatments are not mentioned, it is a tool that can work well for some BPD people. I have found it helpful and so have the women who have used the book. I do use DBT at times along with the book, but for the most part, the book is the foundation of the Group.

    D.B., M.A., LPC, WY

  2. I really love this book and it's a huge help for my recovery. I especially like that you can contact the authors and get feedback about your exercises and recovery. The exercises and journal entries are painful, but the authors explain that in order to fully recover, you have to practice "extinction." I highly recommend this book to anyone with Borderline Personality or other similar disorders.

  3. I read this book to better understand my now ex-boyfriend. It helped me to not take personally his actions and gave me understanding and empathy. It will help a loved one of BPD to listen and react in ways that can help facilitate the journey to recovery. Although the book could not save our relationship, I am hopeful because he is now reading this book. The book offers steps to recovery through detailed exercises. The authors covered every area to guide the person with BPD to recovery. Awesome book!

  4. This book is an excellent guide for understanding borderline personality disorder and addictive behaviors. It clearly outlines the recovery steps someone with these disorders must take to live their life again. This book is very helpful to read as a family member of someone with bpd, as it gives you insight into how to have a relationship with someone recovering from borderline and other addictive behaviors. The book is well written and easy to read with practical advise.

  5. Every therapist who treats people with borderline personality disorder should use this book. It's an organized way to move through steps necessary for the recovery process. Would also work great in a group therapy setting with an "AA" type approach. I would recommend this to anyone recovering from this disorder.

5 comments about Instant Self-Hypnosis: How to Hypnotize Yourself with Your Eyes Open.
  1. I was very dissapointed with this book. I found many of the scripts were written in a negative tone. For example, the script for clear and healthy skin has a sentance that says "As I am free of blemishes and irritated skin...". My mind focused on blemishes and irritated. It would have been more helpful if it were written in positive tone. Maybe he could have said - As I have clear, smooth and healthy skin with a rosy glow - or something like that, never making any references to any negative outcomes. There are a few times in this book when the author goes to the negative instead of the positive.

The idea that you can hynotize yourself while reading is a great idea, however, it's better for me to either write my own scripts or find a different book.

  2. Excellent book. I've been biting my nails for 30 years and noticed a difference after the first session. I am now aware every time that my nails approach my mouth. I just take two deep breaths and the urge to bite my nails goes away. I cannot wait to try some of the other sessions to help me improve in other aspects of my life.

The book arrived super fast and have loved it since.

  3. I `coincidently' found Instant Self-Hypnosis - How to Hypnotize Yourself With Your Eyes Open(2004) by Forbes Robbins Blair while reading about states of awareness experienced during creative writing. My initial interest in his book was his story of how he discovered his own induced state of trance by accident. Many therapists have told me since, that it is common to enter a heightened sense of awareness while working with clients, but Forbes was entering trance by just writing inductions. He stumbled across this realization by preparing for an upcoming client. This was different than anything else I had heard about. Further, Forbes' `symptoms' of his hypnotic state were almost identical to what I experience when writing and I am `in the flow'. His book provides inductions, scripts and templates as well as an overview for how to reach your unconscious mind through simply reading aloud or writing that which you want to achieve. I recommend this book to all of my students and I refer those whom I coach to use it as a tool for their bag of tricks in personal development.

  4. This is an excellent self-help book. I have now over 2 months without biting and destroying my nails. I had been biting my nails since I was a child, but I do not remember when it started. It probably was when I was 4-5 years old. The thing is that I do not remember me having healthy nails, and I do not remember me without biting my nails. When I became an adult, biting my nails in public was embarrasing, so I started quietly destroying the flesh around my nails, and the nails while I was doing anything, like watching TV, driving, talking, etc. My nails were so destroyed that I always was embarrased of showing them, and always was trying to hide them from others. I had tried many thins to get rid of this habit, psycology books which give a method to follow, other meditation methods using affirmations, but nothing worked. Never ever, had been able to leave my naisl alone for even a day. With these other methods, perhaps I was able to leave, at least partially, alone my nails for one day, but the urge to bite/destroy them was so powerful that I could not resist touching them for a longer period of time. When I was really nervous for something, my nails were bleeding, and several times I lost some of them. ( because of infection). This is for you to have an idea of how stubborn was this habit. I always wanted and desired with all my heart not to have this habit, but simply could not get rid of it. I followed the instructions on this book, and did the script for "End fingernail biting" on page 90, for 15 days in a row, and to my surprise I was able not to touch/bite my nails during this time, even though the urge to do it was strong at sometimes. But was able to resist the temptation. Then I did another script, that I created following the instructions in the book for another thing I needed, but as soon I finished with this other goal, I repeated the script for fingernail biting for another 15 days in a row. I am so happy and surprised that I almost cannot believe that this is happening, that I have over 2 months now without touching my nails. For the first time in my life I have been able to cut and trim my nails. But some of them have suffered too much damage that still do not look good, and are slowly healing and recovering. For you to have an idea of the lenght of time I have been biting/destroying my nails, I am in the 40's. So I have been biting/destroying my nails for over 30 years. The method of this book really works, and it has many useful scripts to follow for other goals to achieve. In addition it gives a method to write your own scripts to achieve anything you want or need. (help with your subconscions mind). Highly recommended.

  1. The book is clear and easy to read with interesting information. I would listen to the CD at night and kept falling asleep so I didn't remember what he said. It didn't matter because my unconscious mind heard it. I noticed immediately that many cravings have stopped. At night I remembered that I had a fruit popsicle in the freezer and was going to get it when my mind said "but you are not hungry". I took a moment and noticed that I was full and satisfied and did not get the popsicle and more important did not feel deprived. It was there and I chose not to eat it. I also came home from work and instead of snacking, I excercised to a a Taebo video. During excercising I noticed that I actually enjoyed it. I felt energized and felt good about how well I had followed the exercising routine. It has been only 4 days and I have lost 2 pounds already. I am confident that I am on on the right path.

  2. Steven and Joy Gurgevich do a wonderful job of explaining the power of the mind and how hypnosis can be used to create lasting changes in behavior. I Recommend combining it with the approach in Body Esteem: Weight Loss Through Self-Discovery (includes 2 Audio CDs), the two books wonderfully compliment one another. Body Esteem gets deeper into the emotional reasons behind eating and is more of a workbook approach.

By accessing the subconscious, my weight loss struggle finally went beyond dieting, which was the key for me. Just consider what drives your eating habits, that's the place to start. Most people are so focused on working from the outside in, rather than the inside out, they are never able to build a real foundation for permanent lifestyle change. I'm over the "lose weight fast" diets and bogus pills, I'm getting thinner and healthier by changing the way I think about myself and food.

  3. One of the biggest secrets THE SELF-HYPNOSIS DIET book contains is that it's not really a diet book at all, even though it will likely be one of the best sources of information you will ever find to help you consistently maintain your ideal weight. While diet books help people maintain good body weights by paying close attention to what and how much they eat, the magic of this book is that no regimented self-control regarding food is required at all. Rather than measuring small portions and obsessing about food and weight, the authors present self-hypnosis techniques that provide the reader with a whole new way to address long-standing emotional issues. THE SELF-HYPNOSIS DIET demystifies hypnosis, with help from a companion hypnosis CD that comes with the book and makes it easy to use the powers of the mind-body connection to get amazing results.

What I love most about THE SELF-HYPNOSIS DIET is the way this book says, "If a person really believes that they can have their perfect weight, they will," and then includes real-life case studies about how various clients found unique ways to address their specific, individual issues. I loved reading the success stories about the woman who imagined she could eat whatever she wanted and really lose weight... and she did... and the story about the man who learned to eat imaginary, very filling mushrooms before each and every meal, therefore feeling full at the proper time. I also love how this book is packed with dozens of useful tips and helpful research which can help readers uncover and heal their own inner beliefs and issues pertaining to their weight.... and how easy it can be to use this self-hypnosis method to achieve all kinds of goals in life, in addition to reaching and maintaining optimal weight and health.

The companion hypnosis CD is easy to listen to and especially helpful for those who have never before experienced hypnosis, as Steven and Joy guide us through a process of allowing ourselves to become absorbed in our own thoughts and ideas... discovering how a hypnotic trance and a daydream are very similar. As mind and body share information more effectively through this focused state of immersion where we are immersed in our own ideas, we gain the advantage of becoming more comfortable and relaxed and positive... making the changes we desire happen by letting them happen. And it just doesn't get better than that!

  4. Before I was hypothyroid never had to worry about my weight, so becoming hypothyroid was a major rude awakening. Where before I could lose weight by cutting out a few sodas and chips each week, after my thyroid problem started, I not only couldn't lose weight, I actually gained weight following stringent diets. It was awful. I was so relieved when I finally was able to start losing weight again, by optimizing my thyroid function, changing what I ate, and adding in supplements and appropriate exercise (an approach I've outlined in detail in my book, The Thyroid Diet: Manage Your Metabolism for Lasting Weight Loss). But that doesn't mean that I don't work at this every single day. I always have more to lose it seems, because it's easy to gain, holidays and wintertime can be setback periods, and I'm by nature not an athletic or active person. So weight loss and management is a lifestyle for me, not just something I can do once and forget about!

So, with all this in mind, I have to say that s Steven and Joy Gurgevich's book/CD, The Self-Hypnosis Diet, is a resource that I consider pretty much indispensable, no matter what type of diet you are following -- helping make any diet successful -- whether you're following my Thyroid Diet, or you're doing Weight Watchers, or Ediets, or low-carbing it, South Beach, or making up your own diet as you go.

I've been using this book and companion CD for more than a year, and I consider it absolutely essential to my ongoing diet and weight loss efforts. Dr. Gurgevich is a member of the faculty at the University of Arizona's College of Medicine, where he is the Director of the Mind-Body Clinic and teaches mind/body medicine to physicians. Dr. Gurgevich is very much the real deal, and he has created an incredible, effective approach.

When it comes to diet and weight loss, I only recommend books or products
that I have personally tried and found helpful. I'm a diet product guinea pig for thyroid patients, and believe me, I've tried some pretty wacky things along the way. Most of the things I try I never even bother to write about. Why? Because they don't work, and they're just trying to rip us off!

But this is different. Quite simply, the Self-Hypnosis Diet does work. It helps make the connection between what you WANT to do, and what you DO! You know that feeling -- you're shoveling a cookie in your mouth and thinking, "Why am I eating this when I want to lose weight?" Your goals and desires are not translating into action. Somehow, after you read the Self-Hypnosis Diet, and listen to the accompanying CD, if you're like me, you'll find yourself acting the way you WANT to when it comes to diet and
exercise. Instead of sabotaging yourself, you end up supporting yourself, and making decisions that are good for you. It makes it easier to be on a diet.

I know something like self-hypnosis doesn't sound like it's for everyone. It sounds woo-woo or "holistic-ballistic!" But it's actually very straightforward...by learning to relax and make a true mind-body connection, you get your weight loss goals synched up with your behavior.

An interesting aside: When I first started with the Self-Hypnosis Diet, my best friend kept asking me what I was doing, as she thought I was looking great. I gave her a copy -- she didn't need to lose weight (she doesn't have a thyroid problem, lucky her!), but she wanted to try to stop eating chocolate and eat more veggies. After a few weeks, she had gotten rid of her raging chocolate cravings, and was craving salads. And she told me she had the weirdest side effect. She stopped smoking of all things, something she'd wanted to do for years and had given up hope on!

  5. I admit I went to sleep listening to the entire thing (they say that is normal). But now that I know which tracks get to the beef, they are very good. They help to make you mindful (the book comes with a CD). The book is a bit boring but what is unique is it's not food plan and it's not quackery "you are getting sleepy" hypnosis. I put it on my IPOD and listen before bed. The net/net is that it makes you mindful during the day. It helped me give myself a Girl Scout cookie Samoa intervention (I normally eat pretty good but those Samoas are down right evil I tell you!). It worked. I heard about it from Dr. Mark Hyman's emails that I get (he is awesome as well) and Dr. Weil also did a plug on these guys. You do have to get past the corny parts "you can do it, yes you can" but it's worth it. I also like Belleruth Naparstek. Her voice is soothing and she has an entire series. So, if you are struggling or need adjusting, add this to your aresenal and just use it as time to relax. It may surprise you that it has some impact on your thinking (but I do recommend staying awake for tracks 6 & 7 where the real beef is).
