3 comments about Graphology Explained: A Workbook.
- Barry gives a nonspeculative and fundamental approach to the entire process. From analyzing basic form and layout to writing a final report on a sample of handwriting. Since reading other books about graphology, I have come to appreciate Barry's basic conclusions and thorough step-by-step guide to overall analysis. Highly recommended ! ! !
- I received this book for Christmas and it is layed out perfectly! Especially for me- a beginner. There are pictures on every page and Branston explains things to the fullest extreme. If you are into graphology or want to learn more about handwriting analysis just for fun, this is the book to get!
- This is the worst example of graphology I have ever seen, in my life. It would take this man weeks, no -- MONTHS to make heads or tails of my personality based on the information provided. First of all, he could probably tell you what you are like if you have extremely abnormal handwriting. His studies are based on comparison -- this book might as well be shelved with the tea leaf reading or tarot books you could find at the library. The biggest problem is that his samples were created solely for the study. The subjects gave samples they knew would be under scrutiny. The result turns out to poor: a tense and defensive group. He fails to see the big picture. He doesn't point out what makes a certain sample revealing of a person, he says that a person is great at penmanship in figure 59, but not that the person also has a short temper. He misses the greatest part of graphology: that a person's handwriting changes throughout their letter. He is more likely to give you an example of their strangest writing rather than their most common writing. Sigh, I am disappointed that I have read books on graphology 40 years older than this one, and more accurate.

- After reading just about all the most popular tracts on Graphology one has to say that this 456 page tome is the most complete in content and the most thorough in explanation and examples. Yet it is also an inviting page-turner filled with lively side boxes called Tales from the Quill, Fine Points, and Chicken Scratch! This a serious but light-hearted treatment of a complex but enjoyable subject.
Though Sheila Lowe is obviously an expert she doesn't tout herself as a know-it-all. Instead she uses frequent quotes from other experts in Handwriting Analysis and even recomends some of their books for additional study. She keeps her wit and sense of humor throughout, is not defensive, and is not trying to oversell the product as a miracle cure or a get-rich-quick scheme.
Ms. Lowe started as a 18 yr. old student and studied long and hard, including courses in Psychology and Abnormal Psychology. After becoming Certified, she specialized in Forensics and Consulting. She is ubiquetous on the Web...just Google her name and you will get over one hundred results!
The section on the History of Graphology is detailed and includes nearly all the major players in the field, from 1621 to the present. Sheila's coverage seems unbiased but there is a definate emphasis in the German or Gestalt Method (big picture and surroundings) rather than just the French Atomistic Method (identifying traits through specific letters and strokes) but the Graphoanalysis (business) movement is left out. This is not a big detriment because she is comprehensive in explaining all the important elements: size, presssure, rhythm, slant, strokes, space, zones, borders, style, speed, connections, etc., and their corresponding personality traits...both positive and negative.
There are informative sections on Self Analysis, Graphotherapy, Legal Aspects (privacy, testimony), How to Write a Personality Profile or Professional Analysis, Computer Programs, and Ethical Considerations. There are lots of examples of the handwriting and signatures of famous people (and infamous characters), an excellent Glossary, Index, Bibliography, and list of Schools and Organizations.
In summary, this is a hefty volume but would make an excellent choice for the beginner or a great textbook for a teacher or group leader. The author's accomplishment should go a long way toward making Handwriting Analysis as acceptable in America as it is in the rest of the world. By studying (not just reading) this book, and pracitcing your skills, you will learn a lot about the amazing science of Graphology...and also about your true inner self (not just the mask we present to the public).

- the bottom line is that unless you REALLY know what your doing you can easily misinterpret things. not a good idea. its interesting, but dont take yourself to seriously afterwords.
- As with most of the Idiot Guide books, this book sounded much better in theory than it was in practice. First of all, it only demonstrates the bare basics, and while it certainly examines those basics in depth, it is still a rather slim offering. The book is also terribly organized. It jumps around from individual letters to strokes then back to an individual letter and back and forth. It is neither user-friendly nor particularly enlightening. Furthermore there are not enough picture examples of the traits discussed. To make matters worse the few examples provided are BLURRY and appear to be PHOTOCOPIES taken from other PHOTOCOPIES. While it does a decent job introducing one to some of the basics of handwriting analysis, it falters when it comes to equipping the reader with the basic skills needed to do a proper analysis. My last concern were the little "tip boxes" and "anecdote boxes" on almost every page! They were so scattered and didn't always apply to the topic on that particular page. It saddens me to think of how many beginners have been turned away from this valuable hobby by the poor organization and planning in this book. Shop around on Amazon and you will find much higher quality books on handwriring analysis by trained experts in the field.
- I really enjoy this book. I think it part the sense of humor and part that she covers everything you might want to know. I have even taken her recommendations on other books to add to my collection. It is easy to get them here at low cost. :)
- The book was pretty eye opening and is a great reference work if you want to get started. The amount of information however is overwhelming and shows that this is a *field* of study for a reason!
As you get further and further though, you can start to guess what things mean (like letters leaning forward means hurried individual, etc.), as they seem to blend together in patterns. Who knows, maybe that is a memory device, but I failed to catch it.
If you're curious about the field, I'd recommend it to you. Just don't try to read it in one sitting. It's a better reference work than a late night read.

5 comments about The Complete Idiot's Guide to Handwriting Analysis, 2nd Edition (Complete Idiot's Guide to).
- Sheila Lowe's book is very well organized, well written, and is a wealth of information from years of experience. I have read the book and used it in my work and training. I would highly recommend it for anyone interested in the field.
- Dear reviewers of this book,
To quote another reviewer (Deborah K. Dobbins, Feb. 15, 2007), "this book examines the basics in depth." It also offers lots of sample handwriting analyses which are so key for the beginning handwriting analysis student. Deborah K. Dobbins was quite right again that this book is "Not for the serious students..." but that's because it's a "Complete Idiot's Guide to Handwriting Analysis." I thought the whole point of the "Complete Idiot's Guide" series was to make information on a subject understandable for complete idiots, not serious students!? If that is the case this book will surpass your expectations!
- Greatest book on the market in this field. Simple, yet profound! Easy to read with clear illustrations to promote understanding.
- The best part of the book for me were the handwriting samples of famous celebrities like Bill Gates Jr., Jackie Kennedy Onassis, and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Although a printout of the actual sample isn't perfect, it's "good enough." It's fun to see the variety in individual handwriting.
For some strange reason, the "for Dummies" series tend to be better written than the "Complete Idiot's Guide" series. As an example, "Mormonism for Dummies" was very informative, light hearted, fun to read, and addressed thorny issues that its counterpart "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Mormons" didn't address. (I remember another reviewer that said the same thing.)
Back to the subject. For some strange reason, I have yet to see a graphology book that mentions the apostle Paul's comment about his handwriting, that "every letter is a sign/symbol" (depending on which Bible you look at) in itself. Historical graphology books will mention the French and Germans, or even Aristotle, but not this 1st century Christian. Does this mean that graphology authors don't read their Bibles? How sad!
Everything related to handwriting reveals something about a person's personality. For example, if a person continues to use a leaky pen, this could indicate one or more of the following: thrifty, doesn't want to throw away usable ink, doesn't mind handwriting that has blotches, or doesn't want to bother looking around for a better pen. (OK! Perhaps there is another reason!)
(To be more accurate, handwriting analysis reveals how a person interacts or communicates or perceives their environment, which can include other people, things, and ideas to mention just a few items. Many people reject the idea that their handwriting can reveal so much about them at the time they wrote the handwriting sample, but it actually does.)
For some reason, many artists I know don't like their cursive handwriting and will print or write in all caps letters. This is only true of the languages that have small letters and capital letters. All caps writing tends to be more legible than regular handwriting and also tends to look nicer to the visual artist. Also, old time architects/engineering drafters are trained to write in all caps. So, for the person who doesn't meet the above two categories, all caps writing indicates a person who doesn't want to reveal too much about themselves than is necessary. This is even more true of the all caps writer with a strong left slant.
For the person who isn't using a leaky pen, blotchy handwriting will indicate uncontrolled passions, such as a really bad temper. Interestingly enough, Bill Gates Jr's handwriting sample had a severe blotch in it. This could be due to a leaky pen, poor photocopying, or a really bad temper! (I read a book about Microsoft which stated something along the lines that he actually was known for throwing temper tantrums, yelling obscenities, and spitting at people.)
Arnold Schwarzenegger's signature had fairly even zones, which is rare in men (and even women.) This indicates someone who is roughly balanced in those three areas of thinking, communicating, and perceiving the environment. They are able to think/feel/communicate about those three areas of life at about the same time.
If someone has a zone that is out of balance with the other zones, does this mean they don't consider the other zones? No, just that their 1st preference is the zone that happens to be the strongest at the time of writing.
I read one book which claimed that immature people write with strong middle zones. This is not entirely true. You have to look at the quality of the sample involved. Ranging from 1 (poor legibility) to 5 (excellent legibility). You should assign negative traits to the lower rating and positive traits to the higher rating.
I've only seen one handwriting sample that I would give a rating of 6 and that was by an excellent Korean visual artist, a male, whose natural letter handwriting looked like calligraphy! Every letter he wrote looked like a work of art! His friend showed me a letter he wrote and one of his works of art and I was absolutely astounded! I haven't seen anything that comes close. He is a beautiful person inside and out, writing with natural graceful fluidity and intelligent speed.
People with strong middle zones tend to be socially oriented, or people lovers. This doesn't mean they don't think about "higher" or "spiritual" or "intellectual" matters. It just means that their 1st focus is the social life. People with strong middle zones and excellent legibility are very good people readers and communicators.
William Shatner has a very strong middle zone, very rare for an adult male. On a celebrity game show, when his wife (at the time) was asked if he was likely to cheat on her with another woman, she said "yes." (Remember that strong middle zones indicate people/social lovers.) When he came out of the booth and was asked the same question, he also said "yes"! When I saw his handwriting, I realized why he was both so funny and honest at the same time.
Ms. Kennedy Onassis writes with an extremely left slant and has a tall upper zone. People who write with left slants take a lot longer than other people to reveal their thoughts and feelings. They tend to be private. Please note that all people (men and women) have thoughts and feelings, but that many are quicker to reveal them and some aren't.
Well, I could go on and on but I won't. I'm sure you get the idea.
The book, "Handwriting Analysis for Dummies" (or "Graphology for Dummies"?) was much better. I remember giving it 4 or 5 stars.
I'm sorry that this review doesn't touch much on Lowe's book as it's been a while since I looked at it and it just didn't impress me that much.
- There have been lot of studies concerning handwriting, and the verdict of the scientific community is firm: there is no good data about its usefulness. Just call your nearest university and ask for professor in personality psychology and the response is the same I argue here. My specialty is psychometric studies of personality traits, so I regard myself as an expert.

5 comments about The 5 Year Journal.
- This is a way to record your memories over five years. You can look back each year at your memories.
- I have used this item daily for almost 2 years now for writing quick notes on what my kids doing, running times/training information, health, and travel logs. The format is great for rehashing what you were doing a year or two ago at this same time. It helps to find trends in allergies, cold, training schedules . . . that you would not get in a regular linear journal. The 3 sentence restriction forces me to keep it brief and managable. Just a few seconds before bed is all it takes. Just quick notes on those things you swear you will never forget (but do anyway). I love the subdued cover so it does not attract the attention of my kids.
- This is not the first time I have ordered this diary. In fact, I originally ordered this product 5-years ago. As it says, it is a 5-year diary and I decided to get another as I had just completely filled in my original 5-year diary. The first 5-year diary had a plain green cover, but the quality and workmanship could be seen. It was a great product when I first got it and decided to get it again as I liked the handy aspect of a summary all together of what the last 5-years of my life where. In addition, I liked the quality and workmanship. Unfortunately, they have not kept up with the quality they had with the original 5-year diary. In fact, the pretty picture is the only postitive of the new 5-year diary. When I ordered, I expected to get the same quality that was in the original 5-year diary. Unfortunately, I was sadly mistaken as the product is no longer as good as it use to be. The quality of the workmanship has been severely downgraded. In the original 5-year diary, the cover was a plain green cover with gold embossing to a plain paper cover with black ink printing and a picture. It feels more like a book now than a diary. In addition, I see a vastly downgrade of other original work. This book is similar to the original but not nearly as good. The original book size was 10 1/2 inches by 8". Now the book is down to 10 1/4 by 7 1/4. When talking about a normal book this is not much but with a diary it is allot. You have the same amount of lines on the page with allot less space. This means you must write even smaller and put less information on a page. Three lines is not allot of space to write in the first place. In the original, you could change one line into two if you had to, in this version, you really can't. One of my favorite features in the old book was a ribbon that allowed you to mark the pages. This ribbon is not in the new 5-year diary which makes finding you place in the book difficult and time consuming The paper quality on the old diary book was great and it had a slightly different paper that attached the book. This version of the 5-year diary has all white paper of questionable quality. In fact, I hope this is archive paper and will last. Unlike the original, it has the feel of regular paper that you get from Office Max for use in the copier and not the feel of paper used for writing in a diary. Hopefully, this will hold up like the original 5-year diary, but only time will tell if the downgrades of this once fine product will hold the test of time like the original. In my opinion, the individuals who took over after the death of Doreene Clements are not as interest in making the quality product as she was. Her e-mails over the last 5-years prior to her death showed her passion for her work and for her product. I wonder after seeing this 5-year diary whether the death of the creator of this diary means the death of her dream. With the current quality, only time will tell if the downgrades will also mean the death of the 5-year diary.
- I love this journal! I write in it everyday. I like it because it gives me a couple of lines to write my thoughts, ideas, and emotions. I do not feel like I have to pour my heart out or write a whole paragraph. I can put my thoughts down in just a couple of sentences. I love the monthly focus and the quarterly questions. Also, I love the fact that I can keep writing in the same journal for the next 5 years. It will give me the opportunity to see my growth and focus on my goals and dreams for the next 5 years.
I would definitely recommend this journal and it was worth the price!
- I started journaling in the 5YJ on January 1, 2008 and should be done in 2012. So far, it has helped to maintain my focus and force me to think of one good thing about my day no matter how hectic it gets. I have recommended this journal to my family and friends. It is such a wonderful way to look back at your accomplishments and the things that were so important to you in the past. Most of all, it is a wonderful tool for GROWTH!!!

5 comments about Sex, Lies, and Handwriting: A Top Expert Reveals the Secrets Hidden in Your Handwriting.
- I've been interested in handwriting analysis since I was in my teen years, but I've found so many of the books on the topic to read like dry, boring textbooks. Not so with Michelle Dresbold's book. From the first page, Dresbold grabs the readers and entertains while instructing. I read the entire book in one day because I was so enthralled with her examples, her writing, and her information.
I particularly liked the structure of the book, how she moved from some general information into more specific examples of analysis. And I felt like after finishing the book, I had a good enough grasp to begin a very rough analysis of the handwriting of those around me (hopefully we won't see any felon's hooks or pugilistic p's).
- Its a very new book, published in Dec 2006, and its contents are definitely going to make any first time reader glued to its pages. I also purchased Karen Amend & Mary Ruiz's "Handwriting Analysis: The Complete Basic Book" and borrowed from my local library "Handwriting Analysis: How to make it work for you" by Andrea McNichol.
On comparison of the three, Miss Dresbold's book is more like an introduction that really gets your interest in the subject and her outstanding analysis of Jack the Ripper really got me reading (the other two do not have)! Miss Dresbold also highlights more lucidly the characteristics of certain dangerous traits that exists in the handwriting of people, which might provide clues to a dangerous person.
Miss McNichol's book is more like a step by step process of guiding the reader into handwriting analysis; like a school syllabus, which makes for great reading for a first timer, and in fact one would be quite adept at Handwriting Analysis once finished.
The book by Miss Amend and Miss Ruiz... I would describe it as similar to a manual, with the greatest detail and least "introduction paragraphs" and contains the most amount of sample signatures by famous people. However, it does not highlight to the reader what stuff to look out for in people; the book draws equality to all characteristics with little embellishments.
On a personal note, with so much SMS and email going on today, handwriting is probably quite underestimated and overlooked as a tool. Also, I'm not sure if handwriting analysis can apply to cultures that also has other written forms of language, which might 'interrupt' any rules of handwriting analysis as depicted in all three books. These cultures include the Chinese (Chinese Characters focuses on strokes), Indian (particularly rounded handwriting), Thai... etc.
Still, all three books are definitely one to keep!
- Michelle Dresbold wrote a compelling book filled with fascinating stories, but ... what I found even more important, was the way I learned about myself and what my own handwriting revealed. For example ... when I am not fully crossing my "t"... She states that you are not good at following through on things. Wow!!! That has always been one of my frustrations!!! Now that I have been making a conscious effort ... I feel good about the progress I have made. It really does change your life when you change your handwriting. I highly recommend this book. I took my book to work. A guy in our office is really weird and we finally figured out this "nut case". From teenagers to senior citizen's ...You've got to buy this book!!!!
- Enjoyed reading this book as if reading a novel. The information is presented in a clear, fascinating manner. Really couldn't put it down. I'll never look at someone's signature the same.
- Excellent book, easy to read and very interesting. I had no idea handwriting revealed so much! I think everyone should read this book! I have bought copies from my family and friends, perfect gift! My brother met the author and her analysis of him was right on, perfect. I give it 10 stars. Nancy in Massachhusetts

5 comments about Your Handwriting Can Change Your Life!.
- I have been one of those people who hated the sight of their own handwriting. I always chose to type my assignments through college, even some math homework, when I was going to be turning it in for a grade. I finally realized that I wanted to change my writing and Vimala gave me a great book to assist with my desired change. The book is very informative and directs you in how letters should be written. At the sametime she allows you to choose exactly what changes you make. The book's name says it all, I no longer look at my handwriting like I want it to go away, now I want it to stay!
- Interesting book. I can't say I gave it the time recommended, which was 40 minutes or more a day patiently practising the letters and the aspects of your writing you wish to improve. Its thesis seems hyperbolic and the actual writing style I didn't like. Instead, I now practice cursive italic, a style designed for fast, legible handwriting. It seems both more functional and aesthetically attractive to me than the Vimala style. Whats more, cursive italic was the chosen hand of the Italian middle ages; if Leonardo Da Vinci managed to struggle along without the benefits of the Vimala method of handwriting self-development then so can you and I.
My final impression? - I think there is something to the notion that diligent practice of a well thought out hand will have cognitive and character benefits. Vimala Rodgers is to be admired for her work and insights. What I'd really like to see is a similar method developed using cursive italic as a basis, and dare I say, with a bit more of a 'male' feel, to both its appearance and the associated character traits. I suspect that the Vimala method could be further developed/adapted according to one's own preferences once a good feel for it had been gained. For now, however, it's overall style fails to appeal.
- Hey. Nice to see a book on handwriting analysis with the idea that people can change. How hopeful. The idea of practicing (to write) a specific alphabet sort of gives me the creeps. Is'nt it enough to change a few "flaws" in the writing to get it within a field of the norm? Just reading this book creates an awareness of ones behavior and handwriting, enough to start making small changes here and there. It's a short, quick read, packed with great info.
- I stopped handwriting in junior high and developed very neat printing instead. For years I felt vulnerable about my handwriting. I also felt a longing to shed myself of my handwriting discomfort and thought changing my writing patterns could have a profound positive influence on me. Then I attended a 3-day workshop which taught the principles found in this book. I was ready to confront my uneasiness with handwriting once and for all but also wondered if I would really be able to do it in a natural, flowing way. I actually wondered if my hand would cooperate! Well, not only did I discover some very plausible reasons for why I stopped handwriting in the first place but I also found out that, yes, much to my astonishment and delight, my hand was capable of beautiful handwriting.
For me, simply handwriting--without implementing the daily letter and writing practice she recommends--
brought a wonderful shift in me. I felt a deeper calm, more at ease. Perhaps not coincidentally, four months after switching to handwriting I became pregnant after five years of struggling with fertility issues. A couple of months ago I began the daily writing practice Vimala recommends and have already experienced many inner and outer miracles. For anyone who feels inspired to harness their positive qualities, dig for buried treasure, fulfill their dearest dreams I highly recommend Your Handwriting Can Change Your Life! Vimala's book is filled with wisdom and hope for us all.
- As other people have stated that changing your handwriting and emphasizing certain cognitive change could lead to self-improvement, the "Vimala" alphabet I believe is not a practical in today's business environment. There are plenty of much better self-help books if that is what you need.

5 comments about Handwriting Analysis : Putting It to Work for You.
- Clear, concise, interesting and very useful. I already have some knowledge of handwriting analysis and found it very easy to learn more.
- This book offers a quick look at how to analyze handwriting. The quizzes help to engage the reader in the analysis of the handwriting instead of using prose to simply explain the concepts. I found myself analyzing handwriting for fun within a few days.
- Carrying the knowledge that i got from this book is like carrying a swiss army knife with you everywhere you go. i looked back at cards and "good luck in college" signatures in my yearbook and found very interesting things, that i know are true since i knew the people. the handwritings really do match the personalities. i analyze every piece of handwriting i now see! my coworkers, ads on the train, my friends, doctors, etc. this book is my bible. it teaches you who is a liar, has weird sex prefence, whose psychotic, who is secretive, who's an extrovert, who's suicidal, who wants to be well known, who has poor self esteem, etc. !! GET THIS BOOK!!! includes tons of famous signature and writing samples inside
- ...everything! "Handwriting Analysis: Putting it to work for you" is a well-organized guidebook into the fascinating world of graphology. As a practicing handwriting analyst, I have used this book as a reference many times - with particular attention to such detailed handwriting traits as a "felon's claw". Handwriting reveals many characteristics to the trained eye - this book will educate and amaze readers, especially when they put it into practice.
- This book is freakin AWESOME. It answered ALL and then some of my queries. I didn't think graphology did all of this, but now I'm ALWAYS seeing it everywhere! As it says within the book, "You will never look at handwriting the same way again." It even inculdes a section on what drawings mean. FANTASTIC, UNBELIEVABLE come to mind. I believe it has a small section on PRINT, though I am unsure. I had this book, then lost it in a move....now I'm buying it back (and KEEPING it)! 2 thumbs, 9/10 (or 5/5) watev!

- I have read several books on this topic. This is probably one of the most complete on this topic and certainly the best when it comes to analyzing and interpreting the handwriting of the people you deal with everyday, from bosses to children, employees, spouses, parents, lovers and friends.
Some of the other books that I read on this topic covered a lot of theory.
But this one actually shows how to analyze handwriting in clear precise terms.
I really enjoyed the handwriting analysis covering famouns people. The material on determining whether someone was emotionally disturbed or suffering from other emotional issues was also very interesting. This is also one of the only books that I have read that did a thorough job explaining the meaning of writing rhytm. If you are as interested in this topic as I am, then you may also enjoy Palm Reading: A Little Guide to Life's Secrets.
- Add one more skill to your life skills inventory to be more successful in your journey.
No body can hide his/her real emotion since now, if he/she write you something !!
Invest in this book is my opinion. the rest is up to you.
- Its a pretty old book, published in 1980, but its contents are still relevant in today's context. I also purchased Michelle Dresbold's "Sex, Lies & Handwriting" and borrowed from my local library "Handwriting Analysis: How to make it work for you" by Andrea McNichol.

This book, by Miss Amend and Miss Ruiz... I would describe it as similar to a manual, with the greatest detail and least "introduction paragraphs" and contains the most amount of sample signatures by famous people. However, it does not highlight to the reader what stuff to look out for in people; the book draws equality to all handwriting characteristics with little embellishments.
- This really is a GOOD book! It is very interesting, I wanted it just for fun but now I have a new hobby! Very easy to follow, excellent illustrations and extremely fascinating!
- 'Handwriting Analysis' is not a large book, but it is dense with information, presented in a reader-friendly format. An impressive feature of the work is the quick overview of concepts provided at the outset, which is conveyed with simple 'fun' illustrations and text. Thus the reader may always quickly refer to these few pages to strengthen those neural connections and refresh what has been learned.
Indeed the whole book has been written with the audience in mind: concepts are discussed briefly, but with the right measure of information and illustrations of different writing to provide facile understanding.
I would certainly recommend this book to anyone who desires a no-nonsense, easy approach to the topic: handwriting analysis. Thumbs up for this one!!!
