5 comments about Ask and It Is Given: Learning to Manifest Your Desires.
- As a literary work I give this book 2 stars. It's super repetitive. So repetitive that while listening to the audio version I thought my Ipod was broken and skipping at one point! If I had read the book rather than listening to it while i did other things I probably wouldn't have enjoyed it, or even finished it.
The information contained in this book, however, is fabulous! 5 stars!
The reason why I give it 5 stars is that Esther and Jerry hicks are the first people that I know of that recognize when you are in a low place emotionally you need to take baby steps towards feeling better first in order to accomplish what you want. You can make those steps very quickly in the end, but you can't get from one point to the other without experiencing the middle. If what you want is too far away from where you are you won't have it right now, or even tommorow, but if you make the shift to the next level closer your goal will be closer to you.
This is a very practical point that most self help and self improvement books miss out on entirely, and in my opinion why they don't work for most people. If what you want it seems too far away, you won't allow yourself to have it!
Whether you believe in the Law Of Attraction or not, whether you believe in Abraham or not, you can gain something from this book. I'm still not sure if I believe in these things, but it doesn't matter right now. I don't really believe in magic, I don't know that I will ever "manifest" anything!
The point is that while the information is presented in a way that seems way out of left field and new-age to most people, it is actually very practical and common sense. The creative visualization practices presented in "The Processes" will work for you if you approach them with an open mind and a goal of just feeling better.
So my advice, if you are interested in these ideas, than listen to the audio while you do your busy work. It definitely won't hurt. If you combine it with more action oriented information ("Think and grow rich") you will have a winning combination to achieve whatever you want in life.
- For those of you who don't get the significance of the connection between Amway and Abraham I would urge you to do some honest, open-minded research and come to your own conclusions. For a time I believed that "Abraham" was the real deal. I bought their books, CD's and DVDs. I attended one of their workshops. But after discovering contradictions in the material I began to ask questions. After having done my own research I have come to believe that "Abraham" is nothing more than the re-packaged, spiritually-dramatized version of the Amway motivational seminars that Jerry Hicks gave in the 1970's and 1980's. Yes, it is wonderful, positive material that is lovingly, wittily delivered. It makes people feel good. And if that's all you need - I highly recommend it. But I, for one, need more than that.
- Loved the authors approach explaining the Law of Attraction aand the examples and exercises in the back of the book.. To reinforce and more information and even simpler exercises with a journal I recommend Living The Secret Everyday: My Secret Workbook
- This is yet another book that professes to know the way to riches. Good news! it's easy, I mean it is REALLY easy. Basically; think positive, visualize the 'things' you want, get your vibration all lined up and you're done.
Then add some selfishness, which is important and the more the better! In case you think that the world may need people who actually have empathy and compassion, they cover that one. Simply believe that all those poor sots suffering and disabled choose their lot in life. Got it? OK, let's focus back to feeling good!!!
The two 'leaders' are former Amway sales people (Source: NY TIMES ARTICLE)
This manifesting of success DOES WORK - it works for the people who convince people that it works.
Their law of attraction is true-ish. First, it's not a law. Second it is a small piece of the whole. It's like believing that eating vegetables is the way to health, which is correct, but so are many things IN CONJUNCTION. With this book, it's just vegetables or just LOA and that's all.
Shallow with tunnel vision and a desperate need to believe that things will be easy? Then this is the book for you!
- Whether you are able to buy into where the information comes from or not, you need to read and re-read this book. The philosophy is absolutely amazing, and works if you apply it in your life. Take the time to read the entire book, give it a chance, and I think you will be simply amazed and delighted, for your life will change!

5 comments about He's Just Not That Into You: The No-Excuses Truth to Understanding Guys (The Newly Expanded Edition).
- So, this book isn't really bad , but it is common sense. We girls keep making excuses for the man when deep down we known what's going on. We just don't want to say it or belive it. The book basically says the same thing over and over in every chapter just different situations. Basically if the guy doesn't treat you like a princess then " he is just not into you!" That doesn't take a whoe book to say but and here is where credit is due; if you are hard headed and in one of these relationships maybe reading the whole book is what you need.
- Helpful to me as I need reminding that it's a waste of my time to pursue a man. If it's not going to happen, it's not going to happen. Why stick with someone that is half into the relationship? Book discourages women to be the pursuers which I needed to hear. On my second read, I skipped the parts that definitely did not pertain to me.
- This is a book that every single woman should read. It will amaze you at what kind of things women will believe when it comes to men. Very enlightening.
- While this book was an entertaining read, it was above all inaccurate. When I finished reading this book, the impression I got was, unless he buys you a diamond ring on your 3 month anniversary, or lets 12 hours go by before calling after a date, he's just not that into you. Oh, ok. So if he leaves towels on my bathroom floor, it MUST be because he's not that into me, versus the obvious fact that he's lazy when it comes to hanging up towels.
If I were a man and a woman I was interested in avoided doing any work in the relationship whatsoever to test how interested I was, believe me, it wouldn't last long.
- I decided to get this audio after reading a junk book called the Player Slayer. For some reason, this book came up after I made that purchase. Anyway ...
This was a fun audio to listen to. It was very funny. Comments such as "use your breakup period to meditate, buy selfhelp books, or murder" had me cracking up.
I laughed through much of the audio. As a result, I don't understand how the reviewers could take this book THAT serious. It is clear that you are suppose to take from this book the general principle:
****Don't waste time on a man that disrespects you, uses drugs or alcohol, keeps you waiting, and never calls when he states he is going to call.*****
The above summarizes the whole book. The rest of the book is fluff and I think that was made blatantly clear with the jokes and so forth.
I pretty much agreed with the book, but I am torn on one issue. Greg states NEVER call a guy or ask a guy out. He also advices not to pursue a relationship with such a guy. This causes a problem for me because I have met MANY men recently who stated that their fear of rejection keeps them from asking for numbers or asking someone out and, thus, appreciate when the woman makes the first move. These me also, however, state that once the first move has been made by the woman that she needs to FALL BACK and let him finish the game.
Therefore, Greg is right that men do love to win the chase; it is, however, debatable if women should initiate the chase or the man.
I recommend this book for those women who date alcoholics, losers, drug heads and abusers. This is the book clearly written for them. Women with any sense will just find this book funny.
Case in point: Don't date a married guy. Well DUH!!

5 comments about Quantum Wellness: A Practical and Spiritual Guide to Health and Happiness.
- The author gives you 8 steps to health and happiness. Easy read and identifiable with the Law of Attraction we all know as The Secret. The best book on achieving happiness and all you want for me is Living The Secret Everyday: My Secret Workbook because it all makes sense, shows you how and also like this book takes you each step of the way.
- This life changing book is just the ticket for the gal or fella seeking spiritual enlightenment on ANY level.

- My main issue with this book is the diet recommended. She endorses eating food that's sustainable, and full of "good vibes", but then her whole menu is based on processed soy and psuedo-dairy/meat junk! Has anyone else ever looked at the ingredients in some of those things? Not to mention that conventionally grown soy is causing numerous environmental problems, as well as questionable health issues. I feel like these "pop-veganism" books are really not the best resource for sound information. If you're looking for some solid information about the benefits of a vegan/plant based diet, check out Joel Fuhrman's book "Eat to Live" or the "China Study," by T. Colin Campbell.
I gave it 2 stars as opposed to one because there is some good information in here. As long as you only take it w/ a grain of salt. Or brown rice.
- This is the best book I have read/listened (because I bought the Audio Book and she has a very soothing, compassionate voice) so far on the topic of body, mind and spiritual wellness. I first heard of Kathy Freston in one of the Oprah Soul Series web cast. The idea of leaning into a change strikes me. Small habitual changes physically, emotionally and spiritually are the source of making the quantum leap. What strikes me more is to learn that we are all in this Quantum Wellness continuum. We are here to make progress and not perfection.
I have been on this "leaning into change" journey since May 2004 when I suffered depression. I wish I had this book as a guide to follow from the get go. Instead, I had therapists who used the Quantum Wellness/mindfulness approach to help me "detox" emotionally and spiritually.
In essence, this book summarized my journey of how I mixed my therapeutic soup in the journey of healing. My road to recovery was no easy journey for the first two years. There were much of the auto-pilot self defeating, judgmental thoughts I had to overcome due to my own perfectionist attitude towards myself. However, Kathy Freston suggested journaling as a way to learn and realize our own judgmental thoughts towards ourselves, others, the society and even to God/the Unvierse. Journaling was so powerful in my experience. I had two sets of journals. One journal I literally brought fear-based thinking to light talking to my higher self in my own journal. That was how I felt the first time I am actually a worthy, decent person and it was my first time experiencing compassion towards myself. My second set of journal is plainly for venting and then I threw it in the garbage symbolizing my intention to let go of the toxic thoughts
Kathy Freston talked about how when we mix our therapeutic soup, it has to be multi-dimensional (physical, emotional and spiritual). This is very true in my experience! While I was working through my emotion, my fear-based thinking, I added a series of kickboxing classes considering I had been a coach potato with poor coordination in my "prior life". It helped me worked through the anger I have towards myself and the individuals close to me.
Meditation and visualization eventually called onto my name once I am free from the emotional, fear based thinking. I sometimes still slip in the meditation arena (occasionally, I just couldn't sit), I have learned to become more aware of my breathing, my state of wellness more than ever. I also realize when one sets the intention to "lean into" change without us trying to make a detail plan on how change is supposed to unfold, the most beautiful thing comes to us like how Kathy Freston described. I started the meditation journey around 2 years ago. With the help of Eckhart Tolle and Jon Kabit Zinn's CDs, I find so much serenity and peace inside me no matter how crazy my life situation seems to be. Again, Kathy Freston was right on about leaning into change and set the intention.
I first encountered animal rights out of a blue when somebody posted a [...] link on our company's classified post. When I saw the brutal torture of animals in PETA's web site, I set my intention to lower my meat consumption and stop buying animal products/products tested by animals. Kathy Freston again is right that when we are making progress refusing to be the participant of animal cruelty, we feel stable and fulfilled inside us. I am still having trouble letting go of the existing animal products I have (yes, shoes and existing wool sweaters particularly!) as well as certain animal by-products such as eggs and cheese. However, I find myself stop buying much of them. If you are a vegan/vegetarian and have encountered attacks and criticism from unconscious meat eaters, I think Kathy's messages in this book will help you make strong, valid points on why you choose such journey to others.
Long story short, I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to make some changes in their lives to find a deeper, happier self. My story is the evidence that leaning into change does make a quantum leap. Kathy Freston's Quantum Wellness book is a complete road map to physical, emotional and spiritual wellness. Thank you for reading.
- ...she beats a dead horse (brutal pun not intended) with the endless talk of animal cruelty. A short chapter would have delivered the message across effectively while still making people VERY conscious of the importance of eating with compassion.
Her focus on the brutuality seems like a grim obsession, rather then educational. It takes away from the spritual side of Quantum Living. Instilling guilt and fear in your readers seems to be an oxy-moron
Too bad, otherwise, a book that will change your life for the better.

5 comments about Unstuck: Your Guide to the Seven-Stage Journey Out of Depression.
- After being on Paxil for 12 years it is nice to find an alternative to the over prescribed antidepressants. I gained 80 lbs. over the past years, and I feel worse now that I look so bad. The whole body/mind/spirit approach is something that I can totally relate to.
This is a great tool for anyone with similar problems. I feel much better after getting off of the drugs and using a different approach.
- Having suffered from chronic depression for most of my adult life, I admit that I began reading this book with some doubt and trepidation. I have read many books on depression, including Peter Kramer's books and many others. I have been on several anti-depressants over the years, but found something lacking eventually with all of them. I have also tried counseling - got alot of insights, but still didn't feel quite right. Dr. Gordon's book hooked me from the very beginning...he has a very calm and considered approach to depression, and began the book with his very own experience with depression while in medical school. Finally - a psychiatrist who will admit that he too has suffered from this hideous malady!
Each chapter provides many meaningful and common-sense approaches to helping oneself through depressive episodes. I don't think Dr. Gordon is so much "anti-drug" as he is against what he perceives as the overuse and over-prescribing of these drugs as a panacea for all mood problems and negative life experiences, such as divorce or death of loved ones. I have already seen the value of some of his wonderful suggestions, especially the use of exercise and meditation in fighting depressive feelings and hopelessness. There is also a glossary at the back of the book with a list of numerous resources for the reader to use in trying to find support during down periods.
Thank you, Dr. Gordon, for providing this excellent book for those of us who know that the answer to our angst does not necessarily lie in a medicine bottle, but in also actively finding the resources and support to help heal ourselves.
- Jim Gordon's Unstuck is the first book I know of that gives away the store. To gain this insight in the past would have cost you years of therapy, drug testing and miserable years of life. In this book you get all of it summarized and explained in depth. By reading this book you can help yourself and avoid all the wasted time and visits to pill pushers.
Dr. Gordon is a genius and has shaken the industry that has grown around depression treatment to its roots. His writing is clear and careful as well as easy to read. Thank you Dr. Gordon!
- I'm almost sorry that I read this book. On one hand, the author really put together a fairly comprehensive and well-thought out set of treatment recommendations. I have no doubt that there would be tremendous benefit to the wholistic approach of yoga, meditation, social interaction, improved diet, and exercise, etc. in overcoming many instances of depression - but not all. In the depths of gloom and doom, it can be difficult, if not impossible, just to do something as trivial as brush your teeth or clean yourself in the morning let alone find the strength to self-motivate and begin - as well as sustain - a progam similar to the approach described above.
The author further indicates that he typically obtains better results with a depressed patient after 10-12 weeks of therapy than he would have had the patient received anti-depressant treatment. I can't dispute his findings, but I do question them, particularly in acutely depressed patients. Of course, one of the main themes of the book is that anti-depressants are of little to no use, which is effectively throwing the baby out with the bathwater. It's just too extreme a reaction, in my opinion.
While I agree that they are certainly wildly overprescribed, I just don't think anti-depressants are useless. Moreover, I do not share the author's view that most/all depression has no organic basis and therefore can be treated by wholistic methods alone. One treatment method in the book, for example, was some kind of cognitive therapy where the patient was taught to avoid 'self-defeating' thoughts. I call that the 'Cancel That Thought Therapy', or the 'Don't Think of an Elephant in the Room Therapy', and as far as I'm concerned, it's a pretty useless approach - at least that's been my experience.
In summary, I do think that this book provides a ton of very good things that would enrich anyone's life. But in the case of seriously depressed people, I believe that anti-depressants may provide at least some kind of short-term intervention that wholistic methods alone (or together!) may not be able to. On balance, despite it's usefullness, I find it difficult to recommend this book unequivocally based on these criteria.
- Having been through a depression or two myself, and having had limited results with medication, I love the way this book approaches the subject. I think our society just relies too heavily on medication for an illness that goes so much further beyond creating a cure for a "chemical imbalance". I realize this may not be for everyone, and some people may really need medication to get by. For the most part, I am living proof that a depressed person can get better without medication, and lead a relatively happy. A lof of these steps I found out for myself and on my own - I only wish this book was around 20 years ago when I was caught up in the mother of all depressions. I highly recommend this for everyone.

5 comments about NLP: The New Technology of Achievement.
- I am giving this book two stars- but I begrudge it the second one. It has to be two because it DOES contain the information I bought it for. But I wish I could in good conscience give it one single star- or fewer- because on nearly every page, there's something that makes me want to reach through the book and slap the writers.
I don't enjoy books that effuse with frothy enthusiasm so trillingly that it undercuts the information it's supposed to deliver. And I don't enjoy books where the authors seem to be addressing me and my curiosity about the topic in a sugary voice as if I am a Kindergartner.
So I am not enjoying this book. At all.
I wish that before I'd purchased this book I'd seen the dedication page. It reads: "Dedicated to the joyful heart and soaring spirit of every child reaching for a greater world, especially in yourself."
Now, friends- I sincerely hope your heart is joyful and that your spirit soars. But that sugary prose in the dedication would have tipped me off about what was ahead- and I'd have run for the hills. To get to the information, you have to deal with the authors achingly precious hopes for this book to change your life.
Ever have a cappucino that was all foam with only a little sip of coffee at the bottom of the cup? Remember how you raised the paper cup to your lips and there wasn't anything to swig? Remember the sense that you'd just been ripped off?
Yeah. It's a lot like that.
If you like non-fiction delivered to you like a bed-time story, maybe you'll like this book. But if not-- don't buy this book. Run very fast to the next selection.
If I can stop even one person from buying this book, it was worth my time to write this review.
- This is a great book on how to improve your performance in any area of your life. I've only just started applying some of the ideas and already I notice that I am able to focus better when I study and dragging myself out of bed in the morning is not as difficult as it once was.
- This book is great in that it not only explains some of the basics of NLP but it also includes 43 different exercises to do while you are reading the book. Most of these exercises can be done quickly and have been, for me, generally quite effective. These exercises are not easy to find online, so it's nice to have them compiled in one place here. For the price of a paperback it's hardly a question as to whether or not you should buy this book, especially if NLP is something that interests you.
- I do like the author and have heard him on tape and CD before, but this CD set was originally a tape set (we repeatedly hear "on this tape" spoken), and should have been re-done instead of edited.
Some (only some) of the basics of NLP are included here, and if you've ever opened a book or heard a tape about NLP, you probably already know all that's offered on this CD.
Three of us here listened to "NLP," and we all found the constant reference to "tapes" annoying, along with the voices of two people who do a lot of speaking on the second CD. They both sound like they're trying to do cartoon voices, and my husband couldn't stop laughing. Yes, the voices are that distracting.
The author co-wrote a better introduction to NLP years ago, called "Success Mastery With NLP." It's usually available used on tape. Having used NLP since 1976, I really do recommend it as a more useful introduction to the subject.
- Even though this book meets my criteria for having `fluff', this is still one great introduction book to NLP. The language is down to earth, the exercises are well explained and the authors give a lot of thoughtful advice to beginners.

5 comments about Crucial Confrontations.
- Confrontations with other people's ideas, opinions and actions are part of a daily routine. Books like "Crucial Confrontations" show us how it looks like when stakes are high and results could strongly influence our lives. Having such book "on our side" help us to confrontate daily challenges successfully. For both side's sake.
- I appreciate the books a great deal. They are wonderful tools for improving communication, which is something we all need, and especially when the stakes are high. Great book.
- The book provides an excellent methodology for addressing issues in both my business and private life. I thought it very helpful with completing my performance reviews for both high and low performers.
- The first half of this book was excellent. Part I was titled "Work on me first". Under it was Chapter 2 "Master my stories: How to get your head right before opening your mouth". It talks about the stories we tell ourselves to explain what is happening around us. These stories can have a profound influence on your life. Negative stories tend to become self fulfilling prophesies. I'd heard about these stories in a talk. The speaker asked us not to share what we had learned. So I was pleased to see it in another source. The second half of the book I suspect was written by another author. Perhaps if I'd been practicing their suggestions it wouldn't have felt like formula writing. That said, I would still recommend this book to anyone who feels uncomfortable confronting people around them even when it is necessary.
- I forgot I read this book until I saw it on my list. The teachings are memorable and I am still using them on a daily basis. I am also still giving people advice from this book. Excellent for managers and supervisors. I was making many common mistakes and this book helped put me in the right direction. It is rare for me to remember the in-depth content of books, but this one is well written and has helped me greatly.

5 comments about Learned Optimism: How to Change Your Mind and Your Life.
- This is one of the most interesting books I have ever read. I'm not talking just psychology or self-improvement books...but all books...period. The science behind it, the practices outlined, the insight, will change your attitude and your life. It is unlike any book in its genre, and I can't for the life of me understand why it isn't required reading and a guide book for therapists...but I guess that would make therapy effective! :0. Not really providing a lot of information here...just read it and see for yourself. I have read all his books. This is the first and the best. If you're interested in Positive Psychology or shaking off depression/anxiety or knowing more about yourself and others...start with this book. It is not only a great read...it works. I credit it for changing my life for the better, and I no longer take medication. I would also check out the author's program of study and website and UPENN which is http://www.authentichappiness.com.
- I thought this book gave one a great understanding to where we have been and where we could go. Here the author explained how through our experiences and relationships we are pessimistic. He reinforces that most people are negative in their thoughts and teaches us to be optimistic. I have also reviewed Living The Secret Everyday: My Secret Workbook which is a wonderful book proposing this same theory of positive thinking through The Law of Attraction. Read this to learn about the principles of The Law of Attraction and apply it through the exercises given to live this optimistic and happy life.
- I absolutely loved this book. It helped me to start working on my world view. Although I was a very optimistic person because of a bad marriage and harsh relationship, my attitude went down. This book helped me to realize that we can make a difference in our life. I am still work in progress and we have to be patient about it but I believe world would be better place by having more optimistic people around us.
- Although it's a struggle to wade through almost half a book of how research was conducted, I gave this book a five star rating because it really has changed my life. I honestly thought there was nothing I could succeed at and also believed my children would probably fail at everything too. But I've learnt to rewrite my internal script and delibertely think like an optimist and there's been an instant positive response from the children. We have a much happier home and a bright, bright future. If you ever get even a little depressed you should read this book and do the exercises.
- Dr. Seligman tries to convince us that pessimism is the source of all our problems and optimism is the panacea in this book. It's basically divided into three parts: the first part deals with research in learned helplessness, the second about the advantages of optimism, and the third about how to change from pessimism to optimism.
Seligman defines optimism as not letting negative thoughts distort reality. But what if negative thoughts are reality and positive thoughts are distortions? When I realized that was true and I've been distorting reality with optimism (after I had read the book and had been applying the refutations for a couple weeks), I realized that the book had been inapplicable. He then says that even if the negative thoughts are true, what are the implications of them? He seems to think the only implications are minor things not worth bothering yourself with, but that hasn't been my experience.
To put it succinctly, it's a nice book, well-written and well-researched, but it fails by presenting depression and pessimism as not only the same thing, but something that can be cured in a one-size-fits-all kind of way that just didn't work for me.

5 comments about The Gift of Fear.
- A very good book about fear and the intuitive voice it offers when coming upon those certain forks in the roads which offer consequence.
- I believe violent crime would be significantly reduced if everyone read this book and took it to heart. The safety precautions described are based on the intuition we're all born with. Unfortunately, most of us have been taught by society to suppress and ignore our intuition. The Gift of Fear teaches the reader how to recognize their intuition and therefore how to avoid becoming a victim of violence.
- Every human being has the ability to sense fear exactly in the same way as the other animals. We have civilized ourselves to the point of negating that ability and it has cost many lives in the process. Gavin de Becker has provided us with an awareness of the necessity to re-awaken the "gift". This book should be THE "gift" of choice to all those we love and seek to protect. I should know because it happened to me. I did not know why I was afraid of a man who was coming up my walk and whom I could see through a window that ran alongside my front door. He was "ordinary" looking but I asked the friend, with whom I was having a telephone conversation at the time, to stay on the line while I went to the door. I was tense and apprehensive. The man was asking for directions and I answered through the closed door. Something in his manner and words was amiss. He became very insistent that I open the door but I would not give in. Finally he went away, visibly angry with me, and tried the same tactic at the home of a neighbour around the bend. She had a chain installed on her door and when she refused to open the door to him, he drew a knife and tried to break the chain. My neighbour managed to slam the door shut and called the police. I repeat, he look ordinary, was casually and appropriately dressed, was slight of stature, but sent out a message that my inner voice picked up and transmitted to me as saying, "something is not right about that guy". This did not happen in the inner city; it was in a quiet suburban neighbourhood, in broad daylight, and took place some years ago when this sort of incident was relatively rare. I listened; I was unharmed; and I'm here to tell you how important that awareness was and is.
The copy of this book was purchased and sent to my daughter and my granddaughter so that they would develop a heightened sensitivity and perception of fear when such a signal presents itself.

- This book is a must have for your daughters, mothers, gf's, and anyone you want kept safe!
- Our intuition has been honed through a million years of awareness - from mastodons to murderers. As `sophisticated human beings', we have almost been trained to ignore those signals about danger - the hairs on the back of our neck, the tingling in our fingers, that shortness of breath. This sense of fear is our first signal that all is not right with our world. But we need to acknowledge and pay attention to these physical indications and bring them into our conscious awareness. The author has significant experience in security work, particularly in predicting violent behavior. If we can recognize this `code of violence, then we might be able to prevent it from happening to us. The books is a great `How To" in a unique field of violence prediction and avoidance. deBecker's clients include federal agencies, judges, police and more. He believes that violence is as gradual as boiling water - you just have to know what to do to turn down the heat.

- This is a very good book for middle and high school age kids. It gives them a direction and a way to plan how they live and interact with other teens and adults. I'd also recommend getting the companion workbook The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens Workbook [[ASIN:1929494173 The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens Workbook. It helps cement the concepts covered in the book
- This book helps to answer the question- What must I
do to be successful? The author discusses good habits of
highly effective teens, as well as planning and win-win
scenarios. Above all, a teen must be a good listener in
order to influence people. Poor listeners are identified
by the author; as follows:
o Do you pretend to listen?
o Is your listening selective?
o Do you listen to words only or take in other things
like body language?
o Are you empathetic?
o Does your mind wander in another galaxy?
These are all good questions which the author poses.
Each of us has a style. Some students are imaginative,
creative or spatial. Others are investigative or
inquisitive. Still others tend to be realists or
fatalists. A minority of people tend to be too analytical.
This phenomenon is called "analysis paralysis". Our
tendency to over analyze a problem actually gets in the way
of successfully executing a practical solution on an
immediate basis.
Teams have all kinds of people. Some are plodders.
Others are followers. Some may innovate while a minority
of people harmonize the group and aid in its ultimate
cohesion as a unit.
The book is an excellent value, The author poses
questions aimed at getting teens to identify and correct
sloppy habits/predispositions. These negative aspects
may hinder academic performance later on.
- Well, I'm 14 and perfectly authorized to write a review for this book since it IS for teenagers. The entire freshman class is being required to read this book as a part of our 48 Books Program and some of us like it and some of us absolutely can't stand it. I would give it the fact that it's remotely interesting but it's mean in a way that if you do something wrong you're totally undermining your self-esteem and I think that's just plain wrong. To make this book better he should have put more in that are popular that people actually know about and are funny, not just being used to prove a point. Also, the way he wants us to write in the book and stuff just doesn't appeal to ANY of us because of the way it's phrased before a line to write. Most of us just kind of think about it and go on. It's hard to hold my attention on it for very long because just reading through Habit #2 makes you read over a hundred pages of boring text. My school is in the top 36 elite high schools in the nation and they expect us to read this boring book that's of little or no help to the majority of it's freshmen? I mean, my math teacher thinks it's the best book on the planet, but seriously, he's kind of old. Us teens (who the book was actually written for) think it's not all that great. Whatever. Read it yourself and see what you think, this is only my opinion after all, not that a whole lot of people are going to read it or anything.
- i am not a teenager any more, it was displayed at my local library. I love to read new books, so i checked it out, i am glad that i did. I didn't want to read his dad's book which were published at least 10 years ago, i want to read something new and fresh.
I haven't finished reading, but it already boosted my confidence. Every adults probably think that they know what to do in order to be successful in their lives. This book is like a personal coach, it taught me something that I have never thought about.
Of course, there are things in this book that are just for teens. Overall, it is a very good book. It can be read more than once just to remind yourself when you are not feeling so sure about yourself.
- The Seven Habits of Highly Effective Teens was written by Sean Covey in order to improve the overall quality of a teenager's life. Sean Covey not only introduces the importance of including these seven habits in a teen's daily life, but also touches on many important points including self esteem, peer pressure, relationships and health.
The summer before my freshman year I was selected to attend a two week Leadership Institute that was based off The Seven Habits of Highly Effective Teens. After four years, I'm currently a college freshman, and can honestly say I use the Seven Habits daily. The Seven Habits is a simple book which easily relates to teens and what they might be going through. Here are some of the life lessons I gained.
1. Maintaining a positive outlook, when you're negative you miss many opportunities to learn from important situations.
2. Recording and updating goals regularly, "A goal not written is only a wish."Record your goals so you hold yourself accountable for your actions. Never stop goal setting!
3. Synergy, when you learn to work and collaborate with others the result will be amazing. I learned throughout my high school years that I didn't know everything and I wasn't always right. When you learn to synergize and listen to others, your relationships and your overall outcome will improve.
Parents purchase this for your teens, sit in their room, and let them pick it up at their own time. They will thank you for it later. I highly recommend this book to teenagers and individuals who want to make positive changes in their lives.
