5 comments about Shadow Dance: Liberating the Power & Creativity of Your Dark Side.
- This book is typical of David Richo's work: pretty good. His writing is very very scholarly and intellectual. I often wish he'd step out of his head more often and more frequently share how what he's saying directly can effect me as a person. (For application of work presented here the reader might also want to read Susan Campbell's "Getting Real", as that would give you the skills to own your anger in the moment, for example). As a therapist, I often find that some clients know a lot about whats going wrong, but they need skill building to go along with the insight. He starts applying the shadow material, and the book really gets going, only at about page 150. I felt there was too much background material on how the shadow works, which leaves me afraid to offer this book to a client; Its boring in the beginning. All in all, its a really great expository work on Jungian theory and the Shadow, and he does a great job applying Shadow concepts to real life. I love how he frames projections, and I think this is one of the better works on understanding how projection works in our lives. From a theoretical perspective I learned a lot about the shadow and applications to other cultures and sometimes my own life. After reading this book I felt intellectually overwhelmed, tired, and smarter. Fundamentally a great scholarly work, even though not really a true self-help book.
- This is an excellent book for self-exploration and self-development. It provides a thorough explanation of the concept of the shadow in Jungian theory and introduces us to various practical exercises to explore our own shadow. Though I'm not really a Jungian, this was a very interesting book that gave me lots to think about. If you'd like a more simplistic but nevertheless absolutely excellent explanation of the psyche, try reading "The Ever-Transcending Spirit" by Toru Sato. It is an amazing book that explains almost everything you wondered about in a concise and down to earth way! Five stars may not be enough for this one.
- This book is excellent. I have read many self-improvement type books; most of them are written well but are superficial, or are deep and insightful, but are not written well at all. This book by Richio is the exception - it is well written AND very deep and insightful. The book is about recognizing the "shadow" element in us, bringing it to light, and then "befriending" it; that is, coming in terms with it and figuring out how to live a purposeful life despite our shortcomings. The perspective of the author is that of a Jungian psychologist with a slight Buddhist tinge. His analysis and explanations of why we act the way we do are right on target and I learned much from reading this book. The author has included several exercises at the end of each chapter, and almost all of them are very good and by going through them I learned many things about myself I did not know. While working through this book I kept a notebook, and wrote down several quotes from the book and wrote out all the exercises; altogether I wrote out about 250 pages! I found it best to go through this book very slowly, and don't rush through the exercises. I HIGHLY recommend this excellent and extremely insightful book, and I am very interested in reading more books by this author. If you are interested in doing your own self examination, buy this book now...you will gain many insights into your self, your hidden self, and the motivations which underlie your day to day behavior.

- My partner and I are planning to use this to become more aware of our sneaky dark--hidden sides. It a good begginers approach to learning more about what a shadow part of us is. Thanks for this opportunity to let others know about it.

5 comments about Lifeskills for Adult Children.
- For years I have struggled with poor social and communication skills which caused me great frustration. This book was written for people like myself who have grown up in the shadows of alcoholism and consequently did not develop some key life skills as a result of the alcoholic environment. This book is a must read. it is thoroughly well written, with examples and instructions on how to develop the life skills needed. i especially liked the chapter that focused on conversation clues, which gives scenarios that can be used in everyday life. Wonderful!!
- The skills taught in this book can be used from the day I read it.
Although there is enough number of books analyzing abuse, this book is different because it is so helpful in coping with life for adult children like me.
- This book was very helpful in helping recover as a ACOA. It was Insightful as to what I can do to change behaviors that I have learned becuase i lived with Alcoholic parents.
- debated over the purchase of this book for several months before I decided to purchase this book thanks to the previous reviews. I was not as impressed once I began to read it. But for those who are just beginning to research why they are adult children it will do.
- This is a great book for Adult Children of Alcoholics. One of the shared characteristics I've learned about adult children is a yearning for what is "normal". This book helps to know how to 'pick up the many broken pieces' and learn how to move on from the childhood life-style we were brought up in and relearn what is normal. I've read another book by the same author and have enjoyed the amazing insight she brings to light. I would hightly recommend Adult Children of Alcoholics expanded edition. It tells about the several characteristics identifiable statics that so many of Adult Children have in common --- it is amazing! A couple of other reads I would recommend and have found very insightful are:
YOUR PERFECT RIGHT: Assertiveness and Equality in Your Life and Relationships (9th Edition) by Robert E. Alberti and Michael L. Emmons
(Excellent book on how to be Assertive ---not passive or aggressive.)
BOUNDARIES by Cloud/Townsend --- When to say YES, When to say NO, To take Control of Your Life
(A must read book-- it helped change my life). We all need boundaries in our life and this book helps in many ways, but a couple that stand out are "the freedom to have our own thoughts and opinions, and how to deal with our own emotions and disengage from the harmful, manipulative emotions of others".
Because of Janet G. Woititz and her many years of studies in the area of Ault Children and her writings on these topics to the public as well as other colleages in her field, I have been greatly helped and on the road to recovery!

5 comments about Enzymes for Autism and Other Neurological Conditions (Updated Third Edition).
- I bought this book because my son was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome, tourettes syndrome, anxiety and obsessive compulsive disorder. In the three years after the diagnoses at age 8, he seemed to be getting worse. I had already discovered that vitamins B6 and B3 (niacin) work better for his anxiety than zoloft, plus relieved his allergies and asthma somewhat, so I expected to learn more along the same lines from this book.
My son did ok in school grade-wise, but didn't speak a word all day and acted peculiar as far as not moving his arms when walking, sitting with his palms up, avoiding eye contact, etc. I was afraid he would have a lonely life. At home he threw constant temper tantrums, wouldn't cooperate with showering or changing clothes or going anywhere in the car, etc.
I had discovered yeast overgrowth in a diet book a few months earlier and treated myself successfully for constant yeast infections, but I had no idea until I read this book that yeast overgrowth (dysbiosis) caused leaky gut syndrome, which results in neurological disorders in the young and over 5000 symptoms and 80 diseases in older people. This is the basic auto-immune disorder.
When I read this book, I learned what the root cause of my sons neurological problems was. Also, I made the connection that my lifelong shyness, attention deficit, low thyroid, allergies, and lately constant yeast infections and worsening joint inflammation were caused by dysbiosis and/or leaky gut. Plus my anxiety was getting worse than ever. I bought the enzymes for my son to take with meals, but he wouldn't take them, so I tried them myself and in two days my hips weren't sore, and by the end of the week my anxiety was gone! My hips had been throbbing constantly for the past 2 years and I assumed that I would have to be on anti-anflammatory meds for life, which I was resisting.
Along with taking the enzymes, I dieted low carb and took nutrients to help my intestines heal faster. It took about 4 months before I could stop taking the enzymes without the arthritis or anxiety returning. I feel so lucky to have discovered this. In the end, all my son needed was the yeast cleansing and restoring beneficial bacteria. He took four small pills daily for yeast cleansing - pearls probiotic, garlic oil, grapefruit seed extract, and biotin for 6 weeks (if your child won't swallow pills, try using a tincture called wormwood complex or something similar and make sure you are giving a large enough dosage, it is hard to overdose but easy to underdose), then he took only the probiotics, a couple of them daily. After 4 days on just the probiotics, his behavior changed significantly because he was building plenty of proteins in his intestines for the first time. I would say that about 95 percent of all of his disorders disappeared. He walked and sat differently, he laughed at jokes, he quit fighting about everything and became very cooperative. He started enjoying life! All of our relatives noticed the difference.
This book doesn't cover all aspects of yeast killing (like the leaky gut diet for instance), but neither do most of the other books and websites that I've read. I've learned something new from each source. I highly recommend this book as an excellent start for correcting your dysbiosis including products to use, daily maintenance and a timeline. This author could revamp the book to cover B vitamin deficiencies (B vitamins secrete from our beneficial bacteria which is compromised by the dysbiosis) and mention all auto-immune disorders and re-title it: Enzymes for Autism and Other Neurological Disorders plus Over 5,000 Diseases and Symptoms.
My son also has allergies and asthma and lately I've had great success with high potentency b vitamin liquid and marine phytoplankton. I think the b vitamins are doing the most good.
Also, a caution. About six months after the yeast cleansing, both of us got our symptoms back and had to do another cleanse because we were eating too much sugar and breads. I did a short 2-week cleanse and then probiotics. I figured the mercury might have contributed to this and while researching about mercury detoxing, I asked a nutritionist here in my town what the best method is and she told me iodine therapy and infrared sauna (google them for details). That was the main treatment she had used for her son's A-plastic anemia. So, needless to say, we both did iodine therapy with lugol's iodine. It was easy and so far no recurrences. I just ordered an infrared portable sauna and I'm going to see if detoxing helps me loose weight. All of my other symptoms went away but I can't loose an extra 40 pounds. With all of the junk leaking out of my intestines for so long, I'm sure there is alot of it still being stored that might be interfering with metabolic processes.
I would also like to mention that the first book on yeast overgrowth (The Yeast Connection) was published in 1982 and the concept has been rejected by the American Medical Association. It historically takes 40 years before a new concept is accepted. If the public were well aware of the magnitude of yeast overgrowth and its results so that we could treat the cause and not have to medicate the symptoms of all of these diseases, it might instigate change a little faster. But, in a conflict of interest, they would lose billions of dollars in revenue! Many think they know this and they are attempting to eliminate their competition. Lobbyists have attempted, through the FDA, to make manufacturing requirements so strict for nutritional supplements that it would put alot of companies out of business. A Canadian politician is trying to follow a change of law that was implemented in Europe which allows the government to control the dosage of naturals, take some off the shelf or put them behind the counter so that you have to explain to a pharmacist why you want to buy it. They say it is to protect people from self diagnosing and prolonging effective treatment, but the truth is that national health care systems really need people to spend their money on pharmaceuticals because the profit margin is so great and they get a share. Most politicians aren't aware of this. We have to be watchdogs about this, especially with so many of our leaders on the side of government-controlled medicine.
- This book didn't meet our needs. There wasn't much new information that we hadn't gotten in other sources.
- A good resource and a great book, but this is alot of information. I would recommend getting this book if you are interested in learning more about enzymes and autism but not doing anything without your child's Dr.s advice. Enzymes are not a "cure all" to autism, as all children with autism are different. Many venues must be investigated and discussed with your MD to find the program that is best for your child.
- I happened upon this book by accident but could not be more grateful for that accident. My son is 2 1/2 years old. He has MANY sensory issues (he is a sensory seeker), he also has apraxia of speech and autistic tendencies. He has been on the GFCF diet for over two months. It helped somewhat, but the diet is so expensive and stressful that I was very open to the idea of an alternative to that.
My son has been on the enzymes for almost one month now and he has BLOSSOMED! His sensory issues are almost non-existent---and this was a child whose sensory issues seemed to control him. His speech has tripled and he is much more open to trying to say new words and is open more to seated activities such as reading, puzzles and play-doh. He stays still for much longer periods of time. His eye contact was always pretty good but now it is fantastic. He is even calling me Mama for the first time ever....if you have a two+ year old who has never called you Mama or Mommy, you come to be desperate for that...let me just tell you it has been music to my ears. He is better at identifying pictures. He even pointed to a picture of me and said "Mama" without any prompting.
My son is in speech, occupational and developmental therapies, mostly b/c of his sensory issues. After three weeks on the enzymes, his speech therapist said to me, "you have a new boy on your hands". She and the OT both were shocked at how calm he was, how attentive he was to calm activities. He no longer needed to "crash and burn" during therapy, but could transition from one activity to the next with ease. A child who used to tantrum if he had to leave the sensory room was now requesting to leave halfway through the session in order to go back to the speech therapist's room!
I will be forever grateful to the author of this book and to the previous reviewers that steered me towards this book. My son is a different boy who has even been able to incorporate some wheat back into his diet without any repurcussions. It is so exciting to look towards the future to see what doors these enzymes will open for my soon. I simply cannot say enough positive things about this book. It has forever changed our lives as it continues to heal his leaky gut.
If you have a child with gut issues (chronic diarrhea---my son had this and it is now gone!), speech issues, and especially sensory issues, please take the time to read this book!!!!
- If you are not sure about using a diet to help with Autism, then click Buy Now! This book will open your eyes. It's a great "real life" story. Highly recommended.

5 comments about This Book Will Change Your Life.
- "This Book Will Change Your Life" may not completely change your life, but just flipping through the pages can still add a little pizazz in your everyday happenings. While the tasks are often extremely goofy--or too out-there to actually complete--I appreciate how it challenges you to live outside the box in small, silly ways: ways that that will make a difference over time or, if anything, make a good story to tell strangers/sinner party guests/your friends/your significant other's parents. (Writing a letter to a mass murderer--as instructed by the book--is a good topic starter/stopper.)
- This book absolutely dovetails with my ADD like personality. Each things to do is unique. They don't give you cheesy, boring or obvious things to do like go to the movies, learn a language or make a candlelight dinner for your date instead each one is very specific, interactive and guaranteed to bring instant enlightenment or give a jolt of creativity. For instance, consider the one where they tell you that you are legally entitled to buy a unit of an item from a package like you can open a beer from the box and buy it, and encourage you to do so and test shop owner's legal knowledge. Or how about the one where they tell you to collapse Bangladesh's economy? Or if you are an inventive type then how about that one where you invent punctuation marks. Telling you, this book is one of a kind!
- Hilariously unique book. Gives you great ideas about life. Not sure I would actually try most of the instructions but it's sure fun to think about what would happen if I did. The illustrations and photography alone are worth getting this book. I consider it one of my nontraditional design references.
- Will this book really change your life if you do every task in it over the course of a year? Probably not - for one thing, in the current homeland-security-above-all-else climate in the US, a number of them are likely to get you maced, tazered, or worse.
But. Who among us can't use a push every now and then to break out of the humdrum routine of our daily lives? Some of the less far out suggestions in this thick paperback can certainly do that! I do think it's overpriced, considering you're supposed to tear out some of the pages in order to complete certain "tasks," but for all that, an entertaining read into the farther reaches of "what if."
- This is an interesting little book. It's filled with certain things to do, or objectives for every day of the year. While it probably won't change your life as the title suggests, it will give you some cool ideas. It is the perfect book to leave out on a coffee table or end table in your house and when you have guests over, if they happen to pick it up, it is a guaranteed conversation starter. The pages are all in color and include some interesting graphics. Check it out if you are looking for a strange little book.

5 comments about You Can't Afford the Luxury of a Negative Thought (The Life 101 Series).
- I got this book from the library during a very low point in my life. I didn't really have any faith that it would help, but I was desperate. As it turns out, I was pleasantly surprised by how much better I felt after reading it.
McWilliams does sometimes employ overused pep-talk truisms and occasionally plugs one of his other books (he's written many), but every time I was tempted to put the book down, the next paragraph would keep me reading. Soon I was noting down passages nearly every other page, and in the end, after wanting to copy the whole last chapter, I decided to buy the book so I could dip into it the next time I was feeling down.
In my opinion, the book is saved from its minor flaws by the extremely easy to read format (short chapters, a large-font quote every few pages) and the author's wry tone and practical advice; he knows positive thinking is hard for some of us some of the time - as a cancer survivor, he's been there - but he encourages the reader to take responsibility for his or her attitude and come out stronger on the other side.
Part comic, part persuader, part tough-love coach, McWilliams doesn't produce a flawless book here, but it IS well worth reading.
- There is a ton of inspiration, plus humor and wit, packed into these 500-plus pages. Author Peter McWilliams, writes in the introduction "This is not a book just for people with life-threatening illnesses. It's a book for anyone afflicted with one of the primary diseases of our time: negative thinking."
Although published in 1995, the message is timeless. The quotes by famous people that are scattered throughout the book, are thought-provoking and uplifting. "There is no failure except in no longer trying."- Elbert Hubbard. "A man needs a purpose for real health."-Sherwood Anderson.
"Do what you can, with what you have, with where you are."- Theodore Roosevelt. "Most of the time we think we're sick, it's all in the mind."- Thomas Wolfe.
McWilliams asserts "Negative thinking is always expensive-dragging us down mentally, emotionally, and physically-hence I refer to any indulgence in it as a luxury. When, however, we have the symptoms of a life-threatening illness-be it AIDS, heart trouble, cancer, high blood pressure, or any of the others- negative thinking is a luxury we can no longer afford."
McWilliams exhaustively explores "The Disease of Negative Thinking," in sections such as "The Power of Thoughts" and "The Addictive Quality of Negative Thinking."
He delves into "The Cure" with his thoughts on "Strengthening Your Intention to Live," "You Can Have Anything You Want-Just Not Everything You Want," "The Willingness to Change," "Choose Well Your Companions,"
etc.
The book has an excellent index, which helps the reader refer back to favorite parts. This is a book to keep handy, which offers something new upon each re-reading. Excellent advice for overcoming negative thinking. Highly recommended!
- All in all, I was pretty disappointed with You Can't Afford. Their writing felt very light and airy, lacking in substance. It didn't help that every other page was completely blank save a quotation.
More troubling, there's a not-so-fine line between thinking positively and denying reality, and the authors here fall on the wrong side of it. Ironically, they acknowledge this line early in the book and pledge to heed it. Yet later in the book, for example, they encourage the reader to deal with painful memories by simply imagining how they would have liked things to go and dwelling on that. I found this invitation to denial insulting in more than one way.
My final verdict: Don't bother with this one.
- I never thought of myself as a negative thinker but after reading this very funny, interesting and helpful book I now understand. Yes, I am a negative thinker but I don't have to remain so. This wonderful book explains what a negative thought is, how to evaluate your thinking and the best part, how to stop that distructive process.
This book is filled with thought provoking quotes, easy to understand explainations and practical advice and a wonderful sense of hope.
- I am about half way through this book and I really like it so far. I recommend it for anybody that may think they have an issue with negative thinking. It makes the reader think about things in a different perspective and I love the quotes too. Thanks

5 comments about One Thing At a Time: 100 Simple Ways to Live Clutter-Free Every Day.
- This book is easy to read and has some good ideas to organize and de-clutter.
- I usually find these types of books to be celebrations of the obvious, written by people who want to sell books. But this one is really different. Cindy really "gets it" and her expertise and experience in working with real people in the real world is obvious.
Instead of addressing the issue of disorganization and clutter by outlining 17 new, onerous systems to organize your life like some authors do (which everyone, including those authors, knows full well no one will ever follow), she gives a series of simple, practical tips that can actually be implemented - even in the lives of the busiest people.
The other thing she does that makes this book unique is that she offers brief, but insightful psychological observations for why we might save useless things, or why we don't clean up regularly, or why we get disorganized all over again right after we've just re-organized our lives.
Last, this is an easy read. She says what she has to say briefly, succinctly - and then moves on. No droning on and on for 27 pages about something that could be addressed in 5 paragraphs. A very easy read, but a wealth of great practical insights. Don't think about it - just buy this book. It's a gem.
- I have barely begun to read this book so I don't have much to report. This book was recommended by my sister who read the book and enjoyed the content. She reported it motivated her to get more organized and get rid of the clutter.
- This is a nice book. She does have some helpful suggestions. One of my favorites is....let the phone ring....the idea that you don't have to be a slave to the phone. That way of living is a lot less stressful! I do like the way the book is set up. You can pick and choose where you want to read.....you can jump around in the book...I like doing that if I can. You aren't required to read it from cover to cover to get something out of it.
- I read the book and it is helping me to keep a clean even with 3 children.

5 comments about 4 Weeks to an Organized Life with AD/HD.
- I bought this for my son and his wife, but read quite a bit of it myself. I was impressed with the information on just how AD/HD works in the brain. It cleared up a lot of questions for me. I think it will be helpful to them as well.
- What I took away from this is the power of visualization and developing visual memory as an another tool. I didn't however finish the four week program. Part of this, sure, is ADD, but part of it was the excruciatingly slow pace at which it progressed. When I have a desk full of bills to pay, I don't like directions to "spend no more than 10 minutes on your desk today." It just doesn't fly. To be fair, this would probably be a great book for someone who had no organizational systems in place, was completely overwhelmed, and had no idea where or how to start. I know there's many out there like that. I do have a system of sorts, so this wasn't a good fit for me. If you have ADD and have no clue where to start, by all means try it!
- I just couldn't get into the imagery in my mind of an organized space. I was looking for something with ideas on how I could work with my ADD, this wasn't it.
- Chapter one is one of the best descriptions of ADD that I have read. I learned a lot about myself even though I have read several other books on the subject and have been acquainted with the disorder for more than 10 years.
Chapter two describes how right-brained people's brain functions, how learning and recall are different from left-brained people. Very interesting and practical information.
The best part is the 4-week schedule of activities in the last chapter. I was amazed when I started to do the activities. Now I know why other organizing systems (based on left-brained logic) never worked. You can see amazing results immediately. The important point is DO THE DAILY ACTIVITIES at the end of the book. It will change the way you look at life. Organization and follow-through will be like never before. I always thought I could never get organized, but now it is happening!
- I have only read the first 23 pages so far. At this point, I already know, the person writing this book knows me. I have not gotten this feeling from other books I have read or from any therapist or anyone else for that matter. I will write additional reviews as time allows and I have more to report. I would call this the most important book I have read to date. It has been more than 10 years since I was diagnosed, I am 44.

5 comments about The Highly Sensitive Person's Survival Guide: Essential Skills for Living Well in an Overstimulating World (Step-By-Step Guides).
- Dr. Zeff has given me the skills I need to manage my sensitivity. His book includes relaxation techniques, getting proper nutrition and exercise for the sensitive person as well as the importance of having adequate "downtime." He shows how to align the mind, body and soul for inner-peace. He also includes practical information for coping at work and in relationships for the HSP. I now realize that I have a choice in life and don't have to be swept away by the currents of our stressed out culture. Thank you Dr. Zeff!
- Although this may not be the major work on this topic, this author writes plainly and could even be seen to provide comfort for individuals dealing with high sensitivity. Many students entering adolescence, especially young men, cannot succeed in our large, demanding, overcrowded classrooms and this is the book to give them. Maybe even sit down with them and help them to understand that the combination of what they can control (their diet, amount of intense TV, video games they consume) and what they cannot (school lighting, crowded classrooms, demanding teachers) there is a balance in which they can find success. Highly recommended for parents and teens w/ ADD/ADHD.
- I was hoping to find "new, practical coping strategies" as quoted by Elaine Aron. This was just recycled holistic/new-age fodder. Granted, some of the suggestions are worthwhile, but I doubt there's anyone who hasn't heard of them many times before. Well, maybe, if people are taking the advice to avoid media like the plague!
As another reviewer mentioned, this book encourages a victim mentality. "Ooo, I'm so sensitive," doesn't work in the real world. We can't all get special treatment (this isn't a disability; ADA doesn't apply to HSP's), and we can't just up and move necessarily, or befriend every jerk. Barney's, "I love you; you love me...." just doesn't work with all people!
I know what I need to do to take care of myself, and I imagine most HSP's have figured this out by trial and error.
I give it a big DUH.
- People who are highly sensitive get a bum rap. They are blamed for their "OVER-sensitivity". As someone married to a highly sensitive person, I have been one of the blamers. Ted Zeff has produced a work that welcomes the highly sensitive person as a valued member of the human race, with priceless gifts to share with those of us who are less sensitive. This book contributes to the full appreciation of the great diversity that makes up our human family.
- Extremely insightful information to help those who are highly sensitive and provide tools for self-adjusting and coping. Also excellent resource for family, friends, colleagues to understand these unique people and improve relationships.

- This book is a hoot! Get it for your friends who are about to have kids, already have kids, or who are thinking about having kids! This book is written very straight -- the funny part is that all the horrible "advice" it gives you about how to go about traumatizing your kids is actually representative of what I see people doing to their children every day!(Of course, I never did ANY of this stuff to my three kids...uh...well...maybe a little...uhhh, chapter 4 and chapter 6!) This is part of a set of six books (that I saw together in another store) and all the titles are funny - How to get fat, How to drive like a maniac, etc. They make a great gift and look very cute lined up on a shelf -- the titles make people look at them twice! I recommend it for a good laugh and as a clever, surprising gift. Add it to a baby shower gift!
- I really thought that Traumatizing your children came naturally, but maybe for all those new age parents it's not so natural. It's a good thing this book is available to teach them how to terrorize their own offspring. My life wouldn't be the same without my parents having traumatized me.
As per the Cinematic references, my mother and I watched Mommie Dearest together when I was a young tot...wondering now if it was just so I would appreciate her that much more.
