5 comments about Do One Thing Different: Ten Simple Ways to Change Your Life.
  1. After reading a bunch of novels in a row, I decided it was time for a non-fiction book. I'd had this one sitting on my shelf for a few years and figured I'd give it a try. The title had always appealed to me.

It was easy reading and had quite a few helpful ideas in it. Although the author applies the concept to many areas of life, the title really says it all: If you're experiencing a problem in your life, or if there's something wrong, don't keep doing the same things over and over and expect different results. "Do one thing different" and it will lead to other changes in your life that may or may not take care of the problem. If it does, great. Problem solved. If not, do another thing different and see what happens. Often, our repetitive, unconscious actions are responsible for a great deal of the difficulties in our lives, or so goes the theory.

That's the gist the theory, though its stretched out into a book. I found it somewhat repetitive after a while, though I like the concept and plan to apply it (in fact, already have to some success) whenever I notice some area of my life that could use some fixing up.

As a concept, I give it five stars; as a book, because it is watered down and stretched out in order to justify its price, I can only give it three stars. Still, the title idea is an interesting one...one I think anyone could benefit from at one point or another in their lives.

  2. very informative and very uplifting. if you have ever been depressed and in theapy before, strongly recommend reading this one over and over again.

  3. It's a pretty easy read and even if you don't get anything out of it the stories about other people are interesting enough to be entertaining!

  4. I was able to pick out a thing or two from this book, but nothing that would really be especially helpful for more than a very brief period of time. I can see how this book might be helpful for someone who is simply stuck in a rut, but not necessarily for someone who is dealing with trauma. Depending on the situation of the reader, there are a few 'band-aid' type solutions that could provide a temporary distraction and it might also be helpful for someone who just needs, as the title states, some ideas for a bit of something different.

  5. Author and therapist Bill O'Hanlon has written a practical and compassionate book on how to get out of your ruts. I don't think that this book holds any threat of putting therapists out of business. His point seems to be that sometimes making small changes in behavior patterns can help unshackle people from dysfunctional behavior patterns.

Your past does not shackle you from making positive changes. Small changes can yield big payoffs.

Though it may turn off some, I also liked O'Hanlon's chapter on tapping into spirituality as a way to get untracked. He does this in a non-dogmatic way.

DOTD is a bit like chicken soup for the psyche - it won't hurt and it may help. Worth a read!!

5 comments about Animal-Wise: The Spirit Language and Signs of Nature.
  1. I'm glad I snagged a copy of this book. Usually when an author puts out another book on the same topic as before it ends up being flogge past redemption. This one, though, is a good expansion on what Animal-Speak contained. I'm especially happy about the continuation of the animal totem dictionary, primarily because it reminds readers that there are animals beyond North America ;)

I wouldn't really recommend it as a stand-alone book for a beginner because you really do need a lot of the material from Animal-Speak for betetr context, but if you really, really like Andrews' work go ahead and get this. If you're more independent, you can probably pass it up since it's pretty much the second half of a very large book.

  2. Truley another wonderful book on the subject of animal magic and totems. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is interested in finding out what animal(s) is their totem or just to find out what each animal that comes into their life means amd how it relates to them.

  3. Another cover that suggests things Native American, another round of clip-art-type illos, another dose of the "New Age" (see my review for Animal-Speak).

This book is interesting in that it lists scores of less-popular, less-cuddly critters: insects, arachnids, arthropods, reptiles, amphibians, and fish. (Where else ya' gonna go if you think you have a Crayfish totem?)

  4. Ted Andrews has put alot of research & dedication into this resource.
Fantastic info on all animals included & excellent sections on how to incorporate animal wisdom into your life.
An excellent resource for healers & Kinesiologists when balancing or for anyone who loves animals & nature.
    Highly recommended buy.

  5. Good reference book for Spirit Guides and tells you how to build your own Totem. Easy to read and Easy to use.

5 comments about The Power of Your Other Hand : A Course in Channeling the Inner Wisdom of the Right Brain.
  1. I believe that the author is sincere about her claims that drawing with the other hand can lead to well-being. However, it is very common knowledge now that artistic creativity involves the whole brain, not just the mysterious right brain. Using one hand or the other does not just use the right brain-- in fact, if you saw someone draw while hooked up to brain scan, many parts of the brain would literally light up.

I give the exercises in this book 5 stars and I think it is great way to discover your creativity and experience parts of yourself that are otherwise untapped (although that it "heals" is yet to be proven-- it would be great to see the studies that prove this claim). It is the theory that the author is basing her claims on that is the problem. Artistic expression, even with a non-dominant hand, is a little more complex than the "intuitive" part of the brain or the right brain doing all the work. This idea has been proven incorrect for the last 10 or 15 years, it is time the author caught up with the literature in order to give her readers the best possible information on why art expression is a way to health.

  2. I picked up this book while going through a phase. I was trying to tap into my more artistic side which had been easy for me up until about three years ago, with real world concerns pressing in and working at a job that didn't spark my creativity I found it harder and harder to distinguish what I really wanted to do compared to what I thought I should do. This book I was hoping would help-and it did. It has many, many exercises to help you get more in touch with your more spontaneous, child like side. Many of these exercises were uncomfortable for me at first for me because they involved giving up the control I held so rigidly to.In fact I found it very hard because giving up control would mean I would have to trust in myself. I didn't know how to flow anymore and this book is all about flow. Some of the exercises involve drawing pictures with your non-dominant hand and others involve getting in touch with different parts of yourself you might have left behind for some reason or another. I find Lucia Cappachione an author who's style is very warm and the personal stories she tells in the book set her apart from self help guru's who just preach and preach and give nothing of themselve's in turn. This book is never boring and is like a kid's activity book for adults.

  3. I didn't find this book very useful although it was interesting.

  4. This book mixes theoretical discussion of brain hemisphere function with prescription of practical exercises designed to reawaken the neural circuitry associated with the non-dominant hand. The writer, a qualified psychologist who uses a form of art therapy, draws on her knowledge of Sperry, Jung and Transactional Analysis in positing a theory that exercising the less used hand can lead to the rediscovery or re-emergence of long forgotten aspects of personality and unrealised talents. She cites personal experience and the experience of clients/patients who have engaged with her in a therapeutic relationship. The book is very interesting and ought to be taken seriously, even though the theory would have to be regarded as speculative at this point of time.

  5. I'm not sure how I came across this book, but non-dominant hand writing is an astounding technique. If you get only one thing out of this book, it's the reliable truth you can get from yourself when you are looking for answers. My own left hand seems to be me at about the age of six, about the time I had to start really following rules not of my own making. She's nothing like the case studies in the book - there's no fight between my conscious and my subconscious, just a relief that there's an outlet. (My left hand actually helped me find a camera I thought I'd lost, so there are plenty of practical things the left hand can tell you as well!)

My left handed writing sessions which I do a couple times a week have given me amazing clarity about the things I want, my priorities, how to handle tricky situations well, and how I really feel about things. Right hand tells me what I think. Left hand tells me how I feel. I am grateful to the writer for this book.

5 comments about Chicken Soup for the Mother & Daughter Soul: Stories to Warm the Heart and Honor the Relationship.
  1. It is amazing how frequently I saw my own mother in so many of these wonderful stories. How interesting to discover thoughts and feelings I have long kept to myself were actually the thoughts and feelings of many. What a great book!

  2. This is a beautiful book of short stories about the laughter & tears experienced between mother and daughter and, in some instances, 3 generations of mothers & daughters. There were a few stories that I really didn't see the point in and didn't understand why there were included, but all-in-all, the stories made me laugh and cry. I purchased the book as a mother's day gift for my mom, but had to read it myself first!

It's a great gift for yourself or mother/daughter. It's an enjoyable and sometimes tear-jerking read and sometimes a mirror of a relationship you have/had or would like to have.

  3. Above average writing sets this book apart from others of its genre. Stories are engrossing without seeming contrived. All in all, a well put together collection of stories, quotes and cartoons that ACTUALLY is inspiring.

  4. 5 comments about The Bipolar Advantage.
  1. This book gave me one man's positive insight into living with a mental illess, which usually is a sentence to a life of pain and confusion. Tom Wootton realizes that there is a reason for everything and everyone in this universe, it's up to us to find how to cope and enjoy ourselves and others in our lives.

  2. I cannot tell you how excited I was to happen upon the book THE BIPOLAR ADVANTAGE. The idea that someone had written a book with that title seemed enough, but I figured since Tom Wootton had gone to the trouble to write and publish more than just that phrase, I should give a read to something as dear to my heart as what was implied by his title.

I am a 56-year-old, 6' 11" (sic), bipolar, gay male. I was first diagnosed in 1978 at the age of 28 (and committed), and later (1990) jailed for 14 weeks until my parents hired a lawyer who filed a Writ of Habeas Corpus to force the judge to deal with my case. That was it. I resolved to take care of myself, and I have not lapsed once since then.

The two bipolar support groups I joined in 1990 were composed almost exclusively of people who jumped on each other to hear the latest rumors of new medications that might "cure" all their ills. They gave nary a thought to how changing their habits of thought might help in the meantime, regardless the degree of effectiveness of their current medication. While my heart went out to them, it was too depressing for me to continue with them. (I'm very glad to read that Tom's experience/work with support groups has been so much better than this.) I also found the published literature to dwell on the down side almost exclusively. This was not good enough for me.

I had already studied New Thought: thoughts become things--a new one can change your life--and later the Abraham-Hicks spiritual material, and have based my pragmatic beliefs/approach on their ideas that resonated with me. I have begun work on a memoir about my own experience. Like Tom's, my mind-work rests on a foundation of proper medical care and medication--something I learned the hard way by trying it first without proper care and having my life blow up completely. My adventures include delusions and adventures/misadventures proportional to my height--but reading about Tom's adventures, you might think he is taller than I am.

However, have you ever seen a sex-crazed, 7-foot giant in high mania?

Four years ago, after 14 years of feeling trapped by my illness, I decided that despite everything, I would have to learn to trust myself and follow my dream--to write. So through a lot of mental work in line with Tom's exercises (which I had not yet come across), eight drafts, and 3.5 years, I taught myself to write and completed a manuscript on a different subject. I now have an agent trying to sell that book to a publisher.

I have been so encouraged by discovering THE BIPOLAR ADVANTAGE and the positive, practical emphasis of the book--as well as what I have read on Tom's website about his workshops and lectures. I have begun some of Tom's exercises--they fit perfectly with what I've already proven to myself, and are the perfect step for me to take now. There really is an advantage to bipolar illness, and Tom's book is both a chronicle of his groundbreaking personal turn-around and a practical guide to the beginning of the adventure of a fulfilling life that awaits those who learn to love themselves--and their illness.

  3. Iam 60 years old and just learned I am Bipolar because one of my sons is.I raised 3 teenage sons as a single parent. I was the Black Sheep of my original family. Sure, this fellar is out there sometimes but we are supposed to be. God wants us to be what he meant us to be... that is different. WE ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO BE THE SAME. AND HE WANTS US TO ENJOY WHAT HE GAVE US!!! I DO ALLOW MYSELF TO ENJOY AND I ALLOW OTHERS TO ENJOY BEING DIFFERENT. I do not feel the badness in me now. I used to tell my mom at 3 years old, I'm just NO GOOD! I never knew why I felt so BAD. Also the author would be voted into office if everyone knew the SECRET HE TELLS ON HOW TO LOSE WEIGHT!!! Tricking your body DOES WORK! I lost 53 pounds and being BiPolar I like the tricking part and that is OK. You be you and I'll be me. It is just a different POINT OF VIEW.

    Trish McKown

  4. The title of the book initially put me off. It was recommended by a friend. As I read it, and recognized the bare-all honesty, down-to-earth reality that is bipolar, I found hope in the pages. I learned practical ways to use aspects of bipolar disorder to help my life. Solid suggestions to make my life better. It's not a dry textbook like a lot of books about bipolar are. It's a real life testimony of how one man makes it work. I am grateful for it.

  5. I am reading the book (checked out from my local library) with my boyfriend who is bipolar. The book is right on the track. In my experience, experts in many fields of research are only looking at the topic they study as a scholarly outsider. While this is very valid, and I learn much from the researchers' insights; the information presented by a person who is an insider to an issue is often more enlightening.

3 comments about Natural Relief for Anxiety: Complementary Strategies for Easing Fear, Panic & Worry.
  1. This is a wonderfully concise description of options one can employ when faced with unnecessary anxiety or undesired negative self-talk. The book doesn't break a lot of new ground, but does an excellent job of covering everything in a concise, almost reference like, manner. Of particular value is the chapter on dietary supplements: kava, valerian, GABA, inositol, 5-HTP, St. John's wort and others.

  2. I am very familiar with the pain of anxiety, panic attacks, and agoraphobia for I suffered from these maladies for several decades. During those years of suffering I believed that my problems were purely mental and underwent treatment by psychiatrists, psychologists, and hypnotherapists. I took various prescribed medications and read many books such as this, but experienced little relief. And then something wonderful happened: I began taking a daily supplement of chelated magnesium (for a different ailment) and shortly thereafter experienced a significant diminishment of anxiety in addition to cure of the ailment for which I had originally taken the supplemental magnesium. There seemed to be no explanation for why taking supplemental magnesium caused this wonderful loss of anxiety until the publication in 2003 of the important book The Miracle of Magnesium by Dr. Carolyn Dean. Early in her book Dr. Dean reveals that a major cause of anxiety and panic attacks is deficiency of magnesium and that magnesium deficiency is quite common in the U.S. Therefore, I beg all sufferers of anxiety, panic attacks, and agoraphobia -- whatever else you may do -- please purchase and read The Miracle of Magnesium by Dr. Carolyn Dean and please try the magnesium supplementation which she recommends. It may change your life as it has changed mine.

  3. This book gave me the tools to cope with anxiety. Easy to read with information on stress management, natural medication and many other techniques to help with anxiety.

    I highly recommend this book.

5 comments about Grieving the Loss of Someone You Love: Daily Meditations to Help You Through the Grieving Process.
  1. Very consoling messages in this book. Helps one cope with the loss of a loved one.

  2. This is one of the best grief books I've come across. I buy many of them for friends and new people I meet who are grieving.

  3. As a funeral directer, I highly recommend this little booklet. We give these books out as a gift on a regular basis to grieving families. The chapters are short, informative, inspiritional and filled with pracitical help. Those in grief find it hard to concentrate for long periods of time. The chapters are short and well catagorized to find help without having to read volumns of material.

  4. I have used this book repeatedly - both with myself in the loss of a child - and as an offering to others experiencing loss of loved ones. It is an excellent daily aid to the confusion following shock. It is brief and to the point and offers so much hope - hope that the nightmare will come to an end and one will be happy again.

  5. This book is written is such a good way to help you through the grieving process. It details what's "normal" and helps the grieving person sort out their feelings. Though nobody goes through the grieving process the same way another person may, this book gives guidance on how to cope with the feelings of loss and sadness. I found it encouraging and supportive and at the same time, it seemed to help me recover a little more from my loss.

5 comments about The List: 7 Ways to Tell If He's Going to Marry You--in 30 Days or Less!.
  1. I suspect most boys hate this book; until they have daughters of their own.
I think the same is true for "The Rules."
Boys would much rather string their sex partners along, and enjoy free milk.

What follows are only my opinions, formed over a half-century of observing "The Battle of the Sexes."
During which, I have been happily married for the last quarter-century.
Other than that meager credential, I offer no scientific evidence, and have no way to support my assertions.

    1) Girls read books on how to get boys to marry them.

    2) Boys read books on how to get girls to have sex with them.

The awful truth is that boys treat girls, whom they want to marry, differently from those with whom they just want to have sex.
A boy knows pretty much immediately, into which category a girl falls.

If he wants to marry her, he will treat her with the same respect he wants his sister or daughter to be shown.
That means nothing more than a light Good Night kiss, if that, on the first few dates.

Sorry to break this to you girls, but any more, and he mostly wants sex.
When he knows you're "The One" (Which he DOES know within three dates), he will find a way to let you know.

    3) Boys fall in love quickly, they gradually fall OUT of love.

    4) Girls fall in love slowly, they gradually fall IN love.

Notice I'm talking about love, and not infatuation, which lasts about six months for both boys and girls.
Nor am I talking about lust, which has a shelf-life measured in hours.

There's a reason Amazon bundles "The Rules" with "The List."
I give both of them to any girls about whom I care.

  2. No one, not you, not your friends and family, wants to deliver you the bad news that he's just not that into you. This book gives you an objective checklist, which will tell you if he's 100% into you or not. As for the excuses and the whys, it doesn't really matter.

If a man doesn't meet the criteria listed in this book, the woman who cares enough about the relationship to be reading such books in the first place will suffer.

  3. "The List" Completely, I would recommend this book....Yes women are attractive at all ages...However, it is NOT optimal to wait till the 12th of never to get serious about getting married and starting a family...

Author Of Black Women Deserve Better

  4. The List is an engaging, funny book that is well-written and gets you thinking about what you want from a relationship. I've given it 4 stars because it is the type of book I will definitely read again in the future, although I don't agree with all the advice inside.

The book does raise a number of good points. The authors hit the nail on the head with their comments on 'he dates', 'woman math' and why there is nothing wrong with wanting a partner who wants to spend most of his time with you, as opposed to a guy who seems to want to earn 'time off' away from you so he can do other things. It is also good that they say you shouldn't have to work hard to earn love from the person who is right for you by pretending to be something you're not. The 'Life in Listopia' sections of the book were particularly entertaining, even though the imaginery women and their scenarios were sometimes a bit contrived.

The part of the book I'm not so sure about is the focus on 30 days and the 'love at first sight' type of romance. 30 days is a very short period of time. I'm a private, fairly reserved person, and tend to be attracted to the same in a man, so it is unlikely that I am going to get close enough to a man within a month to feel ready to make a lifetime commitment. Plus, I'd argue that picking a life partner should not be done at breakneck speed. The 30 days guideline is emphasised too much in the book - why not, say, 6 months or a year? My parents have been happily married for over 30 years and they didn't follow all of the list rules - so it's silly that the book doesn't acknowledge a bit of leeway. The book is also unrealistic in saying that if a man is in love with you he will not want to do anything else than spend time with you, whereas I think we all have hobbies or interests we want to do and this is a positive thing.

Overall, this is an interesting dating book and it gave me some good ideas. If you enjoy relationship books, it's a good buy because it has a fresh perspective on some issues and you can pick and choose the bits that work for you.

  5. This is an ABSOULUTELY AMAZING book. I was so impressed I wrote to the authors. It's ABOUT TIME that a book like this is available to single women out there...my only complaint about this book is WAY OVERDUE. Congrats to the Corbett sisters for distributing a TIME-TESTED SECRET in such an easily readable and relatable written work.

Happily married women have known this secret over the years but maybe haven't been able to verbalize how they knew their husbands were Mr. Right. Or maybe they were just lucky and fell in love with someone who truly loved them for who they were.

At any rate, with a book like this available, we single women don't have to rely on sheer luck in meeting a true Mr. Right. We now have guidelines to help us figure out within 1 MONTH whether Mr. Right Now deserves any more of our time ( I think 1 month is generous). I know I sound harsh, but there are too many of us "servicing men" (like an earlier post succintly mentioned) and boosting their egos until that man meets the woman of their dreams. Despite many misinterpretations, this book is NOT about getting a guy to marry you within 1 month because of loudly ticking biological clocks. This book about NOT wasting time on men who have no intention of having a future with you. It's about making wiser choices and finding that true SOULMATE that adds value to your life instead of wasting your valuable time. Know that YOU ARE FABULOUS AT ANY AGE (haven't we learned that from Sex in the City?). However, let's face it...if we want children, we likely have to work on that by atleast 40ish...that's the UNFORTUNATE BIOLOGICAL TRUTH. Even if you don't want to have children, face the fact that life is short so why not be eager to spend your journey with someone who ENRICHES YOUR LIFE.

I, too, have been burned by a guy who was wasting my time and was completly unloving. In the 8 years I spent with him, I couldn't honestly check off any of the 7 items on the list. But, the cruel way the relationship ended was enough to wake me up to the truth. This book, besides making me feel foolish for my blunders, confirmed that for the future I need to act smarter and pay attention to red flags and dealbreakers. In this day and age, Ladies, DON'T SETTLE FOR LESS THAN YOU DESERVE!

This book is about single women first, loving and approving of themselves and recognizing that they are DESERVING of someone who TRULY loves them, approves of them too. Men deserve the same. We may not have the instinctual alarm that men have to know they've met the One, so we need some wisdom to help us out. Now, go read this book!

5 comments about Meditations for Personal Healing.
  1. When I first bought this cassette 2 years ago, I put it on softly on my reversible cassette player to listen throughout the night. For about a week I woke up with "dunes" of sand in my eyes so I must have been crying a lot in my sleep. Louise has an incredibly warm, comforting voice and she obviously knows a lot about psychology, which she applies to wonderful effect in a very loving way. The first meditation is called Your Healing Light, and it's just her voice with piano and a bit of synth. It's a perfect intro and I have subsequently been using it as a soundtrack for when I give reiki healing treatments. The meditations follow one another like golden sonic waves, all of them addressing some vital issue or another. Many of the beautiful phrases have stuck in my mind, like "there's a part of you that is more than your past, more than your relationships and more than your personality ..." and "I move from success to success, from joy to joy and from abundance to abundance" and "I am open and receptive to all good." This tape also taught me how to forgive people that I did not want to forgive or did not know how. After about 2 weeks I experienced a dramatic improvement in my outlook on life. I have subsequently moved on to far more technologically advanced cassettes (Eldon Taylor & Paul Scheele) but for sheer human warmth and understanding, nobody comes close to Louise Hay. I would strongly recommend this cassette to anybody who has been abused in any way or who is depressed or feels helpless. It is uncanny, but I think there a type of vibration emanating from this cassette, which is more than the sum total of her voice and her words.

  2. This is fantastic! Each of the meditations is beautiful and only 5 to 7 minutes long (there are about 13, covering all different topics from prosperity to relaxation to healing your body, etc.). The one about discovering your inner child makes me cry (I am not the kind to easily break down, but it truly is beautiful). I sometimes just put this in when I am driving and listening to Louise's soothing voice calms me right down. You will feel so much love in your heart when you're done listening.

  3. I am a HUGE fan of Louise Hay and her teachings, and I have quite a few of her CDs, my favorite being "Overcoming Fears." There is something so soothing about that CD, even though the music is a bit dated and has that 80s New Age sound, but it works. For me anyway.

That's the great frustration I'm experiencing with this CD for Personal Healing. The music is a synthesized piano and it sounds so harsh and tinny at times. It's actually intrusvie and is in great contrast to Louise's gentle, loving voice. I have tried again and again to work with this CD, and while I LOVE Louise's messages, I really have to work to get past the irritating music, which just sets me on edge. It's very frustrating because I'd really like to be in harmony with the brilliant ideas and affirmations, but the music is not in harmony with the spoken artist. It does not accompany or support Louise. It is a distraction and almost feels like the musician is fighting to wrest focus from her, and that's very difficult to listen to. I hate to say it but I would not recommend this CD.

  4. In my opinion, everything that Louise Hay has written has been wonderful. Her very simplistic and down to earth writing really works for me. Since 1988, I have read Louise's books and listened to her tapes and CD's. When I first listened to this CD, I was amazed at how much it works for me and how soothing Louise's voice is! This CD gives you practical help in everyday WELLNESS and HEALTH and HEALING. And because I feel that Louise Hays teachings, CD's and books really work for me, I own 14 of them! And This CD really works for me and I have it to use when needed. Thanks Louise!

  5. I really like Louise Hay and think these meditations are great. But there are two things that make it difficult for me to listen to this on a regular basis.

First, the electronic music is very difficult to listen to and ignore so it's hard to get past that. I wish Louise would re-record this with more pleasant, non-electronic music.

Second, there are several five-minute meditations; but the CD is only broken down into two tracks so it's difficult to just listen to a few of my favorite meditations. It would have been so much nicer to have each meditation be a track of its own.

  1. The book came in a timely fashion and nicely package for privacy. I recommend my favorite book about sexSex and the Perfect Lover: Tao, Tantra, and the Kama Sutra

  2. Well, what can I say? Cosmo did it again. I wouldn't have bought the book if I didn't love Cosmo for their brilliant naughtiness in their magazine. The book goes a little too far for even my tastes in a few areas. Nevertheless, I got what I wanted - Lots of wonderfully creative content.

  3. This book was every thing I was looking for. If you are a young girl ages 16-21 or older this is a great book to learn so great stuff about guys and girls. It helps with ideas and positions for sex and is a fun read. I love Cosmo and this book is there best.
