  1. Buy the books instead. Her screechy voice is hard to listen to.

  2. Although there were some interesting and enlightening concepts hidden within the pages of this book - most of it was entirely too autobiographical and boring to be of much use to me. I kept waiting for her stories to tie into the condition of being overweight and/or unsatisfied. She starts on several different veins that I feel could have been interesting and much more deeply explored, but dissapointingly, they weren't.

  3. This book follows a series of books by Geneen Roth in which she addresses the connection between food and our emotions. Emotional eating or not eating is a way in which we manage our feelings. She is a wonderful writer who is able to clarify difficult issues by sharing autobiographical vignettes with humor and insight. She tells the story of how she overcame emotional eating. It's a book everyone who struggles with food should read.

  4. through telling her story, she is telling you another way. a better way. not to diet! to learn to love yourself and to stop depriving and indulging. she shows you that with allowing and enjoying, you CAN find a balance. it isn't an immdiate result but, it is a lasting one for the body and... the mind.

  5. I read a number of books on emotional eating this spring and found this book, as well as the Roth book about eating at the fridge to be long on angst and short on solution. So you identify with her-good as far as that goes. I prefer to use my time and energy to find a better way. I found Intuitive Eating by Evelyn Tribole and The end of diets by Dilia de la altagracia to be more useful than Roth. But the book I am actually following is by Stanton Peele and Archie Brodsky, The truth about addiction and recovery, for it teaches you how to design a method to deal with your particular problem. It goes all the way-not just halfway. And for that I am thankful.

  1. Although not OA approved literature, it is well worth any OA'er reading. The author states that the BIG BOOK is still the bible, and he reads it often, but his book shows us overeaters the 12 steps from a compulsive overeaters perspective. Something he said helped me to return to program something like its not just another diet program, it's a "save your life program". AMEN

  1. This book provides an excellent overview of many aspects of eating disorders and their treatment. Carolyn Costin is extremely insightful and knowledgable about the subject and she writes in a clear, accessible way.

The book also is full of case examples that demonstrate the theories/treatment interventions she talks about. These are usually brief and easy to understand. Both her understanding of eating disorders and the treatment interventions she uses are translateable and quite useful in the treatment of eating disordered patients.

  2. This is a great book for anyone who wants to learn more about eating disorders for a class or for anyone who is suffering or has a loved one suffering with this disorder. I ordered it for a graduate class and can honestly say that this will be a book that I will keep in my library.

5 comments about The Body Image Workbook: An 8-Step Program for Learning to Like Your Looks (New Harbinger Workbooks).
  1. I never thought workbooks really work. I am on Step 6 in this book, and I am really beginning to notice a difference. I still have a negative body image, but I'm beginning to realize how much of my problem is related to my thoughts as opposed to my actual body. This book speaks to me on a very personal level, and has helped me realize that several people struggle with the same problem I do. I don't think I'll be totally cured by the time I finish the book, but I do think I'll improve my body image each day by practicing the steps in the book. It's a long process, but I truly believe this book will help me learn to love my looks!

  2. I found this book to be one of the most helpful books I've read on overcoming body image issues. Everyone has body image issues to some extent. Others, like me, could have received many advanced degrees and done great things in the world had they successfully channeled bad body thoughts into something productive; like accepting oneself and learning to honor the body (and genetics) given to you. This book walks readers through a number of exercises designed to help first return to the core reasons (and identify humiliating public experiences) leading to a negative body image. The book then goes on to help the reader come to grips with their own expectations and realities surrounding their body image. My nutritionist is now "prescribing" this book to all of her patients. I highly recommend this book to anyone who struggles with never feeling fully comfortable in the skin you're in.

  3. I have found this workbook to be very thorough in professionally addressing the issues of body image for a variety of people. It provides a positive reference tool to those who seek greater self-confidence, self-awareness, and self-esteem.

  4. I never thought that I would try using something like this workbook, but I'm glad that I purchased it. It's an easy book to read and understand and the exercises have been very helpful so far. It isn't for JUST people with weight issues, but people who are dissatisfied with their facial features, thinning hair, height, etc. Highly recommended for anyone with problems with any physical features.

  5. This is really a great book. If you don't like the way you look, have self-esteem issues, fears, or depression (all these may be caused by a poor body image), read this book.

Thomas Cash teaches you step by step how to overcome this crippling illusion and discover the beautiful person you are meant to be.

I would highly recommend this book.

  1. I had difficulty with the sound of her voice and did not find the info helpful

  2. I gave a copy to my sister-in-law who has some eating issues and she loved it. So seems the lousy review needs balance.

  3. Excellent set of CD's. I worked with Ms. Roth's books when they first came out many years ago, and I found them extremely helpful in dealing with my eating/weight issues. Her approach has matured and become even better since that time.

  1. The "Love Hunger" plan is a good one. It has some really good information, but be prepared that it is very religiously-based. Stressing the Twelve Step rules and leaning on God, it teaches you why you might be a compulsive overeater and how to break the bonds of food. It also helps you realize what a "binge" really is and the causes and "cures" of such. If you're looking for a book to help with your weight with the perspective that food addiction is a disease not unlike Measles or Diabetes, this book just might help you out.

  2. I discovered this book over 15 years ago. I don't know what I would think of it now, but then it really opened my eyes to why I was eating compulsively. In fact, it began a whole chain of events that eventually led to a different way of life.

2 comments about Preventing Childhood Eating Problems: A Practical, Positive Approach to Raising Kids Free of Food and Weight Conflicts.
  1. This is a great book. The theory that this book encourages is sometimes called *intuitive eating*. I have introduced this method of eating to my family, and I already see wonderful results. It is empowering for our children to learn to listen to their bodies. By respecting our children, and trusting them to know what their bodies need, we stop the power struggles about food in our families. In addition, we give our children a wonderful gift: a healthy relationship with food. Buy the book!

  2. I thought that the book was an excellent guide, not only in dealing with preventing eating problems in children, but to assist myself with eating problems that I have struggled with since I was a child. The approach advises to legalize all foods for your family and to not impose restrictions on your children because all it will do is backfire on you and they will want it more. The book is helpful because it deals with feeding from birth and up, and also shows how one can implement this plan with older children.

3 comments about Skinny Boy: A Young Man's Battle and Triumph Over Anorexia.
  1. Having years of experience in an acute care psychiatric setting, I'm not familiar with any other book that so deftly describes the internal dialogue between this young man's mental illness, and his weakened will to survive. Too often, people who have never experienced a mental illness don't understand the extreme difficulty sufferers experience. Much of their suffering comes on the battlefront of the mind. How the author eventually wins that battle makes this book a must read for anyone with an eating disorder. Families and professionals will also appreciate the frustrating battles his family endures, but also how important patience is with those who suffer from an eating disorder. It's a great book.

  2. All i can say is that this book describes the mental process of what i would assume any person either male or female suffer from. I my self have live with an ED for several years and have waited for a book that takes the male point of view. The internal conversations within him self hit home to such a degree that sometimes it feels like its my own life. I highly reccomend this book to all men who struggle with an ED as well as all women. Good luck and god bless

  3. I'm currently struggling with anorexia, and when i read this book it not only motivated me but made me feel not so alone. I related to Gary's thoughts and feelings. This book would be perfect for a parent with a child who has and ed, a friend, or for anyone else who's interested in the subject. It's fast moving...and hard to stop reading. I highly recommend it.

4 comments about Binge No More: Your Guide to Overcoming Disordered Eating.
  1. This is the second self help book I have invested in. The book tends to go a bit over the top on statistics but does manage to give advice and information on bulimia, anorexia and BED all at the same time. The author is obviously well read in such matters and the book is full of useful information. Useful if you don't already know why you or a relative have disordered eating. Sadly as with the last book I knew all the information already, the book added nothing and certainly hasn't guided me in overcoming my eating disorder. The author does acknowledge that sometimes a person will need some kind of one to one therapy to overcome the problem. Perhaps those with minor disorders will find a solution here and I'm sure it will help others understand why someone has an eating disorder and how they can help. Unfortunately the book has convinced me that self help books like this are not the answer and that professional help is required. Coping with an eating disorder, let alone trying to overcome it is difficult enough on your own, I don't recommend this book as the answer it professes, a little help maybe but thats about it.

  2. I thought this book was very helpful with its ABC approach at helping to stop the behavior that leads to the binge. Its model of a chain helps one figure out the path that lead to the binge right from the begining of the day and learn how to prevent it. I would suggest this book to anyone that is looking for a little bit different approach on overcoming binge eating.

  3. I found this book a tremendous resource, and still do. It's written from a technical perspective, quoting studies and providing case studies on disordered eating. Its message is that if you understand why you binge (ie, lose control) you can stop it. It's all related to stress eating, but for me, the message was that I absolutely had to have a beginning and an end to my meals...I'm a grazer. It made all the difference. I lost 40 lbs and I'm now "normal" weight.

  4. This book if full of concrete information anyone with an eating disorder needs to know. The exercises give you insight into the way you relate to food and your body. Anyone who eats will relate to this book and anyone who is obsessed by food in any way will be greatly helped by it.

5 comments about Father Hunger: Fathers, Daughters, and the Pursuit of Thinness.
  1. This book makes sense to me. Focusing on a systems approach has brought the clairity and peace of mind I have needed. This book does not place blame on fathers but forces us to look at our parental figures as part of a bigger picture. I honestly feel this is one of the best books I have ever read. Relatives and friends of mine are eager to read read this book. Thank you Dr. Maine!

  2. Fathers of daughters with eating disorders need help understanding the disorder and how to overcome their frustration with not being able to "fix" their daughter. This book opens the door to begin the process of restoring a more normal and effective role for the father.

While not the most "user friendly" writing style for the non-professional, it is easily understood and offers much information to help men (and the women they love) deal effectively with everyone impacted by the eating disorder...themselves, their spouse and, most importantly, their child.

Although I am a physician, I am also the father of a daughter with an eating disorder and read this book upon the advice of her therapist. I am very glad to say that it has started my daughter and me on a path to a much richer relationship and that she is on the road to recovery.

  3. Great Low Price for a great book in excellent shape.
    Came earlier than expected.

  4. This is a brilliant book on the connection between a father's relationship with his daughter and the manifestation of her body image into adulthood. Time and time again it has been proven that the absence of a loving emotionally healthy and nurturing relationship with a father substantially increases a woman's risk for a variety of self-esteem issues, including weight problems. The father is the template to which a woman relates to men, sees herself in interaction with men, and perceives her values with men, and men often are seen as the world given the patriarchial overtones in society and commerce.

In this book, Dr. Maine concentrates on how the father can be instrumental in protecting his daughter from the onslaught of emotionally-driven complications in body image. Often when a young girl is pursuiing thinness it is out of a need for attention. In adolescence this is acute in its unconscious desire for a man's attention with the blossoming of hormones and puberty. Mass media tells young girls that love is only possible through physical appearance. If a young girl has no concept of uncondition love from the one and only man who she needs it from - her biological or adoptive father (NOT a stepfather, they are actually dangerous to stepdaughters) ... she will be indoctrinated by the belief and it will be her sense of reality that only her body and its state of perfection guarantees performance-based ego-centric love.

Dr. Maine outlines the role of fathers, what they can do, and gives them brilliant advice in this book on how to love their daughters and protect them from the illusions of the world. BRAVO!

Once again ... daddy's girls get all the breaks. It is as if only the father can guarantee immunity from predatory men if he sets a high standard in his daughter's mind. The predatory nature of a mysoginist culture is often a culprit behind why women are literally dying to be thin just to get bread crumbs of shallow attention for undeserving men. Only women who have their father's unconditional love stand a chance at being firm and rooted enough in that love to see the myth and lie that being thin is the passage way to being appreciated.

  5. I was hoping this book would take a much more academic, intellectual look at psychoanalysis and the study of father-daughter relationships. Instead, the language and tone are simplistic, the anecdotes are quaint and pleasant, and the overall depth of research seems minimal. It may be a fine place to start as an overview on the topic, but this is definitely not the book to buy if you're searching for anything serious or memorable.
