- With all the hype surrounding Dr. Phil's "ultimate" solution, this gem of a book provides the missing ingredient. I loved the step-by-step approach and guidance in how to really put the power of my mind to work for me. Not just talk, this book gave me the exercises and scripts I needed to take even Dr. Phil's good ideas and do the actual programming he talks so much about, but doesn't really give the hands-on tools to pull off. This book does! Thank you, Ms. Beach.

- I just had the pleasure of attending one of Ms. Beach's workshops in Virginia Beach at the Heritage Store (one of my favorite places!), and I have it say I thoroughly enjoyed it. I left with a clearer understanding of why I have issues with food, a real desire and excitement in making changes, and positivity in myself that I had not had before. Ms. Beach states that "self talk is hynosis" and it sounds so simple but think about it - if we constantly cut ourselves down consciously, then our subconscious has no choice but to listen! The book is a gem, short and to the point, in a laid-back tone that will appeal to readers, as if a friend is talking to you. I also purchased her cd and plan to start my program immediately. Ms. Beach is very personable and seemed to truly care about her workshop members, asking questions and acknowledging feelings, in a very warm environment that made you want to share. I only wish the workshop could have been longer! Please check out her website as well (http://www.en-trance.com). A wonderful experience all the way through, highly recommended!
- Some good thoughts and ideas. But sometimes you have to decode what the author is trying to say because the editing and writing is so poor. The book seems more like a rough draft before corrections were made. It is full of dropped words, typos and sentences that seem to have been randomly cut and pasted together. Here's one example - the well-known scripture from Ecclesiastes is quoted as "a time to read and a time to sew", when the words are actually "a time to reap and a time to sow" - obviously totally different meanings. While such errors add some humor, they also distort or obscure what the author is trying to say, as well as show a lack of attention to quality.
The ideas for self-hypnosis are very basic - and mostly focused on affirmations. Some of the suggestions the author tells you to make to your subconscious mind could produce negative results, such as that sugar is a poison to your body. There are many types of sugars in many kinds of foods, including fresh fruits, vegetables and healthy carbohydrates. You definitely don't want to teach your body to react to sugars as a poison.
As a psychotherapist and healing facilitator, trained in various forms of clinical hypnosis I had hoped this would be a good book to recommend to my clients, but I cannot recommend it to anyone. I gave it two stars because some of the content is useful, and the author is well-intentioned. However readers should be cautious in the use of some of the suggestions/affirmations recommended. In general, any suggestion or affirmation that has negative wording or possible negative consequences should discarded.

- This was a really helpful book that acted as the light at the end of the tunnel when I was trying to quit smoking. I had wanted to quit for years and found it virtually impossible. This book helped me to achieve "the impossible."
Anyone who is adicted to something and reaching out for a book to help knows the truth--you're hooked and you need some help. Preaching a ton of facts that only make you feel worse won't help. Shubentsov cuts to the chase and reminds the reader of the inner strength each person has inside necessary to break the chains of addiction. This book was by my side for the better part of a year as I continued to fight the urges with Shubentsov acting as my tough but loving coach. I have since passed my copy on to my mother and have bought copies for friends and other relatives that struggle with addictions. If you're looking for someone to tell you that you have no control and that there is no hope for you, this is NOT the book for you. However, if you're looking to end the vicious cycle of addiction, PLEASE READ THIS BOOK. It may very well change your life...
- I had the pleasure of meeting this man in person several years ago. This book is the next best thing if you can not "experience" him directly. He is very much into "energy" and that aspect is not found in the book.
- One thing I hate about ANY self-help book is to have to wade through lots of pages of preliminaries before I get to the heart of the book's message. Another thing I dislike is to read how to deal with an addiction that the author has no personal knowledge of. In this book, I had to wade to page 117 to chapter 7 before he gives the "exercises" that are suppose to awaken your "Bio Energy." Instead of reading word-for-word, I skim by only reading the first sentence in each paragraph. It's quite obvious that this author has never smoked during this lifetime because, as a former smoker myself, I can tell you that his "cold turkey" approach won't work. I totally agree with the review of 5Feb00 that the author looks down upon us in the United States; he thinks that Russians are toughter, probably because of those miserable winters. He gives reasons to quit and then says to use patience and determination to tolerate the three days of withdrawals. On page 162, he says that he wants you to quit without pills, without patches, without gum, without substitutes, and without weight gain. I've got news for the author: when strong emotions versus logic, logic always looses. On page 74, he states that, if people use the nicotine patches, folks must ". . .recognize that they have just shifted their addiction from one form of nicotine to another." I have another news flash for the guy: using the patch will (1) immediately cause you to quit inhaling poisons into your lungs from the tobacco smoke; (2) get you to break the strong habit of having a cigarette in your hand, putting it into your mouth, sucking on it, and then watching the smoke as you exhale; and (3) if you follow the instructions, teaches you the patience required as you realize that it will take weeks for you to totally quit comfortably. If you try to quit cold turkey, you will either repeatedly fail and feel miserable or you will quit, but you'll want a cigarette each day for the rest of your life. The latter possibility is most certainly NOT complete freedom from the addiction!!! Why not quit comfortably and completely with the patch instead of making things hard on yourself by trying to quit all at once with no help?
- I smoked for 30 years, tried to quit 7-8 times unsuccessfully, then came accross these tapes. I listened to them twice and found it EASY to quit!!! The information was exactly what I needed to learn. If it worked for me, it could work for you. Best Wishes in becoming SMOKE FREE!!!
- Well so far ive listened to 2 out of the 3 cd's that comprise the audio book. and uh ive learned that he really dislikes Russia and that's about all i got out of cd 1. cd 2 --its the same. story telling but nothing about curing cravings or addictions (mine would be peanut butter cookies, etc). the cds have so far not gotton to any solutions just story after story of his trip to USA and how he got into this business (that's on cd 2). im hoping cd 3 finally offers a solution or guidance. so far its annoying that he has not gotton to the point of whatever his methods or suggestions are. it just goes on and on. i would not recomend this book/cd but maybe that will change when i get to the 3rd cd.

1 comments about Body Story.
- I find it odd that nobody has reviewed this book yet. I think it is extremely creative and beautiful. The chapters are labeled poetically; Virgin Body, Girl Body, Starving Body, Wedding Body, Giving Birth, and Blind Spot are most of them. These chapters are not only validating and insightful to the troubles of eating disordered women but also transcend the eating disordered "barrier" by relating fully to all women. At the end of the book the author, a Professor of French at Agnes Scott College in Atlanta, provides study questions and discussion topics for group reading making the book ideal for sharing and book clubs. This book is significant and a great work by a strong and very real woman. Do give it a read. You will like it!

2 comments about Re-Versing the Numbers: A Poetry Workbook for Eating Disorders (In-Versing Your Life).
- This inexpensive paperback book contains a wealth of ideas for both professional and lay persons working in a support group setting with ED persons. The activities are grouped into broad areas such as: Understanding my Body; Understanding my Relationship to Food; Understanding my Emotions, etc....The activities move slowly toward an understanding that FOOD is not the issue at all. If taken as a supplementary text to begin conversation, it can only enhance any meeting and move the young people toward self-reflection. The poetry is a real plus!
- I was very excited at the concepts this workbook offered. I love the idea of expressing my creativity and like the idea of guided exercises. After reading through this book, I simply put it up on my bookshelf to gather dust as it provided me with absolutely NO inspiration for me to move forward. I also found the layout of the book, the paper quality... to remind me of something that was home published. Normally, I can take the good from all of my books, but I was disillusioned with this purchase.

- As an educator I "saw" former students with new eyes because of JJ in this heartrending, courageous story. The deeply personal information is compelling. I congratulate the educators, friends, doctors, family, and the amazing JJ. My thanks to the author and the cover illustrator for giving me an education!!
