- this is a fabulous book! it does much to unpack all the myths surrounding eating disorders, namely that they are a problem of rich, white, teenage women who are just overly vain. primarily it explores eating disorders in the context of race and class and as a reaction to sexual/physical/emotional abuse. rather than pathologizing the people who suffer from eating disorders, the author considers them as logical reactions to completely illogical, destructive situations. having heard all my life that my bizarre relationship with food exists because i'm crazy (rather than because i'm perfectly sane), this book did so much to assuage my guilt and shame and removed so much of the mystery that surrounded all of it. a truly transformative book .....
- I found this book extremely generalized and narrow minded.I agree that the fact that eating disorders among minority women should be exposed and written about in order to give those women a voice and a place to turn to for answers. However, the fact remains that the vast majority of eating disorders are suffered by white, middle class young women. Instead of addressing this, calls those who suffer from eating disorders and happen to be white and middle class vain. However when minorities suffer, the disorder is socio-economically created. She also draws generalized conclusions from a study of only 32 women. I feel the book was grossly over-generalized. The only part of the book that I felt was useful, was the fact that it brings the issue of minority eating disorders to the public's attention.
- Thompson's work is by no means over-generalized. Indeed, she is careful to base all of her statements on the rich, in-depth interviews she conducts with her participants. This book is especially important not only for women of color, but also for white women to read because it confirms our many-times-voiced argument that our eating problems are not about being thin: they are about surviving, about feeling scared, about wanting to disappear, but also to be recognized as "beautiful." Thompson's study is based on 18 case studies, yet her introduction provides a fabulous justification for such a small sample - how do you get a random sample of women with eating problems? There's no way to know what the POPULATION is. The new edition is subtitled: a multicultral view of women's eating problems. Pick it up! You won't regret it!

5 comments about The Food Contrarian: Quotes For People Recovering From or Dealing with Eating Issues.
- My wife loved this book. She has hung quotes up on our refridgerator that have caught my attention. This lead to me reading the book. I enjoyed it. It has helped me eat healthier and think twice before I put something unhealthy in my mouth.
We have a family of three children. I think by giving them healthy choices and eating right now, they will have a good chance to eat healthier when they become adults.
We have relatives with eating disorders. I think they would benefit greatly from this book. There are so many good quotes that make you think.
- I suffer from an eating disorder. I am in recovery and everyday is a gift. This book has been a wonderful addition to my recovery library. I loved this touching, inspirational yet airy delight of a book. The author does a great job of dealing with a very tough and emotional subject and bringing equal degrees of inspiration, tough love and love to the writing.
I loved the look at the Steps as I am a firm believer in the 12 step program and some of the quotes are now printed all over my house.
It is very difficult to have an eating disorder and it is even more difficult to admit and deal with it. Thank goodness we are in this generation where books such as this one can be written openly and shared with those of us who suffer.
I recommend this book to everyone who wants to start off their day (or end their day) with an inspiring quote and a little boost to get them to live "one day at a time".
- At first I wondered at all the slogans. But when you first read this book it is probably because you are ready to deal with your eatting issues. The real value in this book is when temptation hits. Instead of picking up the fork, pick up the book for some quick encouragement. Most people don't call a sponsor or friend because of guilt, but opening these pages when you are ready to go back to old ways is a real encourager to stay on track!
- Tuchy Palmieri's The Food Contrarian follows on the heels of Sex and Intimacy: The Gifts of Life, Tuchy's Law And Other Contrarian Quotes To Help You In Life's Journey and Money And So Much More: The True Meaning of Wealth.
Everyone loves a good quote and Tuchy Palmieri's The Food Contrarian does not disappoint. The book, while inspirational and informational is a little hard to follow along at places. However, I did enjoy the quotes and found them to be extremely relevant to those suffering or recovering from any sort of addiction.
There is useful information in the form of AA plus 12-step program motivation. The Food Contrarian is definitely a must-have gift for anyone in your life with an addiction or buy it for your own book collection.
I enjoyed the book and think that others will too.
-
This book is well organized and helpful to anyone- not just people with ED's. There are twelve steps that are meant to help people and they are easy to understand as well as well-written.
The easy-to-read format is a plus, and the quotes included are great. My favorite is "Gratitude is no only the greatest of virtues but the parent of all the others" by Cicero.
You won't regret buying this book. I loved it. Its quick and easy and perfect for those lonely days. What can be wrong with that?

- This book was so hard to get through due to the amazing amount of grammatical errors. It was hard to focus on the content of the book with all the errors. I have also read many other books on eating disorders that were much more helpful for dealing with my neice than this one. I would recommend everybody to not waste their time on this book.
- i work in the field of addiction and use this book as a powerful tool in helping others. the insights i've found in this book help me to be compassionate and empathetic toward those i work with.
- This book was very informative and educational. My knowledge of eating disorders has greatly improved after reading this book. Dr. Cole's book gave me understanding and hope about this complex problem. I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in learning about eating disorders.
- Barbra Cole's book "The Eating Disorder Solution" offers a very clear persective on Eating disorders which helped our family understand what one of our loved ones is experiencing. Also she includes statigies for family and friends of the inflicted person, to utilize so that they can be a constuctive part of the treatment. After years of conflicting advice I feel Dr.Coles book has cleared up many issues and has provided hope for our family.
- This is by far the best book I have ever read on the subject of eating disorders. I learned a great deal about how to support my loved one who suffers from morbid obesity. God Bless you for sharing your wisdom.

He made me feel that there is hope for all the suffer from any of the eating disorders that he covered in this audio series.I would highly recommend this book to anyone that needs encouragement and explaination of eating disorders. 2 comments about My Thin Excuse: Understanding, Recognizing, And Overcoming Eating Disorders.
- This is an excellent picture of an eating disorder. The authors provide a brave and poignant picture of the struggles of the author (Messinger), along with important insight and commentary by Merle Goldberg, MSW. This is a MUST for anyone with an eating disorder, or anyone who knows someone with one or who works in the medical/mental health fields.
- The combination of client and therapist in this book works well. Heart-wrenching journal articles are followed by clear and insightful commentary of Ms. Goldberg. If you've never understood eating disorders before, you will have a better understanding after reading this book. You may find how little food has to do with it...Thanks for a great book.
