2 comments about Psychiatry: PreTest Self-Assessment & Review (PreTest Series).
  1. This was the only book I used during my clinical rotation in Psych. Fadem's High Yield Psych is also great. If you're planning on becoming a psychiatrist, then you should get the massive Synopsis of Psychiatry... which I always thought was just way too much info for most people.
This book fits in your white coat pocket and is great for reviewing questions in your spare time. It consists of tons of board-type questions in the same format as all the other Pre-test books, complete with explanations.

  2. I used this book on my psych clerkship and found it to be very helpful. Most of the questions are well written and relevant. A few similar ones even showed up on my shelf test. I recommend this book.

4 comments about The Life Strategies Self-Discovery Journal: Finding What Matters Most for You.
  1. Each page in this journal is in the same format. It has a one sentence epigram from Life Strategies at the top. You then get blue lines across the rest of the page, where you can fill in your ideas on this topic.

Compared to either Life Strategies or The Life Strategies Workbook, this journal is not very helpful at all.

If you have read Life Strategies, you can simply write down your ideas about the key elements in that book on your own paper.

If you want to do exercises, The Life Strategies Workbook is superb and I highly recommend it.

    Skip this journal!

Do you learn best by thinking, writing, talking, doing, or some combination of the above? Whatever the best method is, use that method to apply Life Strategies to improving your life.

  2. This journal will help you to map out and record your quest for self-discovery and enlightenment. The lay out is great and you will find all of the extra tools and hints are useful and somewhat inspiring. Dr. McGraw has done it again! I also like to use this journal to record my personal growth from a book by Matt Pasquinilli called "The Child Whisperer." Even though the book is written with parents and teachers in mind, the ideas are simple to understand and apply to any person of any age.

  3. If you have read Life Strategies or have completed any of the exercses in the Life Strategies Workbook, then you are already on your way to self-discovery. Both are excellent self-help tools and highly recommended. However, this journal is not like the original book or the companion workbook and readers could be very disappointed. There is nothing contained in this journal that would lead one to self-discovery other than what the reader actually chooses to write. You are not prompted for ideas, thoughts or feelings but left to your own resources to express your own thoughts. There are a variety of basic journals on the market, many for more outstanding than this one, so invest your money in the Life Strategies book and the Life Strategies Workbook and pass on the Self-Discovery Journal.

  4. I was dissappointed in this journal, because it seemed like more of a workbook. I was expecting more of a self help book, not a book which I had to write my own opinions. I bought this book to hear the opinions of another person, that is not what I recieved. I do not think that is helpful, but if you like to do exercises, go ahead and try it.

5 comments about The Making of Dr. Phil: The Straight-Talking True Story of Everyone's Favorite Therapist.
  1. I found this book to be predominately Tabloid Journalism. The majority of the book has the exact same tone & phrasing & spin as the rag mags. Just like the rag mags do, the authors took a few facts, a lot of gossip & rumor then added their version of armchair psychology & spin to create a sensationalistic waste of money. When you're done reading, it feels more like you've read a fiction novel than legitimate non-fiction. As any good journalist knows, if you can't get enough corroborating sources, you don't run the story. So why did they bother? Money?

  2. I just finished reading this book, "The Making Of Dr. Phil" which is an excellent book, and I recommend it to everyone who wants to see what the Wizard Of Oz looks like behind curtain.
It paints a clear picture of the kind of person Dr. Phil really is, a hypocrite! What is interesting is that this book did not receive much publicity, as there is an alleged campaign against the book by Phil, and most media outlets refused to interview the writers for fear of retaliation from Phil. It also shows that Phil is really just an expert psychological manipulator and a very aggressive entrepreneur. Here are some random bullet points I picked out of the book, it's a worthwhile read...pick it up now!

    · Phil is not a therapist, and never really was. He hated doing therapy. He went into psychology as a way to make money. He is an expert negotiator, businessman. He is no longer even a licensed psychologist. Phil just uses psychology as a way to make money. He quit practice and went into the Court business, as that was a way he could use psychology as a weapon, and as a way to make a lot of money, and not have to deal with all these dumb people with their problems!

    · Phil has quite a sordid past. His first Gym business went bankrupt, and there is lots of evidence that he was still selling to people, when they knew it was going under. They were just spending all the money that came in, and were not putting the money into the health club. They had people buy long-term contracts, and then sold these contracts to 3rd parties, and even after the gym went under, those folks STILL has to keep paying for it! This was based on a tricky contract Phil designed. After that company went under, Phil left in the middle of the night, and to this day the people who got shafted are still bitter about what happened.

    · His first marriage was a disaster, he was controlling, abusive, and there were all sorts of charges of endless womanizing. His first wife speaks out very clearly on all of this.
    · "You Seminars" which became Pathways, with Thelma Box, was pure sleazy "charismatic" seminar stuff. This is where Phil started to apply all of his salesmanship and psychological seminar tricks, and started to make some money. Thelma Box spills the beans on how Phil takes credit for other people work, and even tried to scam her near the end. Phil would also abuse the "volunteers" that worked for Pathways.

    · Phil is NOT a registered psychologist anymore. He ran into trouble years ago, when a 19 year old woman lodged a complaint against Dr. Phil, she said he sexually abused her, pulling her into his lap, reaching into her blouse, etc. He was severely disciplined by his licensing board in a number of different ways.

    · His new company, Courtroom Sciences, CSI, tested the loyalty of his employees by staging calls from people pretending to be from the media. His demands, perfectionism, impatience, infuriated outbursts created an atmosphere of fear, resentment, and anxiety. CSI was a 24/7 job for all his employees, they "own you". Dr. Phil behaved in a sexist manner towards his female staff, calling some of their work "an abortion". He was verbally abusive, swearing, calling a woman a stupid b*tch, etc. Former employees describe CSI as being like a "cult" in the demands it would place on them.

    · Dr. Phil Show: Phil got a lavish office, but were very cheap with the crew, no food on-set, 16 hr days, he made the job a "living hell" for the crew, making it "the worst show they had ever worked on". He would yell profanities at his crew, making last minute changes and keeping people up all night. Even his wife Robin was interfering with the lighting, and caused the Emmy award lighting director to be fired! The staff all has to sign non-disclosure agreements, so they could only leak info out. Phil did not bother to learn the names of his crew.

    · Phil's ego is so big, he refuses to have any other experts in psychology on other than himself.
    · All guests on the show sign massive releases that release them from everything.
    · He gets $125,000 per speech.
    · He launched products called "Shape Up", in a deal with Alticor, the parent company of Amway.

    · Phil presents himself as though he thought up all the valid psychological ideas he uses, he makes it seem they are all his own ideas. McGraw also doesn't seem to follow the APA guidelines or ethics, in how he deals with the people on the show.
    · He tries to erase his ugly past from the record, and pretends it never happened. He filed for bankruptcy after his health club went out of business, then left town in the middle of the night, and didn't mention it again. The same with his first marriage, which was a disaster, with allegations of Dr. Phil cheating on his wife many times. He tries to pretend things in his life never happened.
    · People are so afraid of Phil, that they will not talk about him, won't return calls, and expressed fear of retaliation from Phil.

  3. This book was conducted by real award winning journalists if anyone would bother doing any research on the making of this book, not some tabloid reporters. None of the negative stories are refuted in the book because Dr. Phil chose not to respond to any of the allegations in the book. I'm sorry to brake the news to people but Dr. Phil is a slimeball. He really did leave the members of his gym high and dry and and really was severely disciplined by the the licensing board for his sexual exploits with one of his clients. Its all public record. Sure there are people with axes to grind, but not everyone can be lying. The overall portrait is not a mistake. He is a very ambitious manipulative man who will succeed at all costs. Money is king to him. Don't believe the hype. Believe the people who actually worked with him. The book is competetantly written and it is so great to see what a hyprocite this pedantic jerk really is.

  4. I doubt the voracity of anything in this book... it is a way however for the author to use a famous name and face to promote herself. Fostering "hate" doesn't help anyone.

  5. This is a fascinating behind the scenes look at the life of Dr Phil - an unglossed version that includes his first marriage, failed business ventures and interactions with his staff. While it is not written as a character assassination, nor is it a totally balanced portrayal, given that there is no word from Dr Phil's friends or family. While you end up feeling that you know more about him before, you don't really get a sense of the entire man.

Dr Phil emerges from these pages as a highly intelligent man with a strong ego who thrives on change and gets bored easily. His biggest skill is his ability to assess and summarize a situation quickly, after which he loses interest. He's a savvy self-promoter who is very comfortable with who he is and not terribly interested in the opinions of others, bar a very select few.

The first half of this book is the most interesting as it covers Phil's early life. In the second part, it gets somewhat repetitive. I would have liked more in the chapters about his relationship with his wife and his sons. I also felt that the authors were out of their depth when discussing his psychological background and philosophies. This is a quick and interesting book to read, but it's not the ultimate answer to "who is Dr Phil"?

5 comments about Ultimate Weight Solution for Teens: The 7 Keys to Weight Freedom.
  1. I am 12 years old and 35 pounds overweight. I got this book about 2 months ago. It had alot of great ideas that really worked. I put this book to the test and in the past month i've lost 10 pounds. I reccomend this to teens(or preteens) who have tryed to lose weight with other diets and had no success. Overall, I think this is a wonderful and really helpful book.

  2. Really hit the nail when it comes to helping teenagers cope witht their weight problem. Jay addressess everything from how to have a positive out look on life to ways to start taking control of your weight. I was surprised at how much sense it made to me. It was like this book was written with me in mind. It addressed all the feelings i had towards myself and my weight and made me realized that their more to me than just how much i weighed. This book was surprising well written. Jay is a really talented writer and I thought this was just a knock off of Dr. Phils book, but this book really addressess teens and their issues in a way that is easy to relate to. Well Done.

  3. This book was filled with a lot of information. Even though i'm not currently sticking to the "program", I found out a lot of information that I could share with others who are trying to get into a healthy life-style. If I ever get sick of being so over-weight, then I would find this book very useful. The only thing it did not do was make me realize how much I need to lose weight. But that isn't the book's fault. It's mine because nobody can get it thru my head that if I don't lose weight, I could have very bad health problems later on.

  4. Prior to reading this book, I had read Dr. Phil's adult counterpart. As an 18-year-old reader, however, I often felt that the book wasn't wholly appropriate for me as it referred to having responsibilities such as a career, kids, bills, etc. It also would include phrases like, "I want the body I had when I was in highschool!" This is obviously not relevant to someone that is still a teenaged student. At the time, I wasn't aware that Jay's book existed, but as soon as I saw it, I decided that I had to buy it.
Although this book is definitely more appropriate for a teenager, I think it is certainly written for a younger teen. Upon first starting the book, I was annoyed by the colloquial tone it used to establish a, "Hey, I'm young too!" type deal. He started the book with a line like, "What's up?" and uses words and phrases like "crap," "bs," "stuff," etc. He also frequently interjects anecdotes about his friends, family, and life experiences, and repeatedly talks about his involvement in school as a law student. Although I do think it's admirable that he is trying to establish a connection with his reader, it is a little over-done.
Aside from this being written for a younger person, it seems also to focus on severely depressed people with low self-esteem. For me, as someone who has never been picked on, has never had an issue with low self-esteem, and has no means to relate to the quotes in the book like, "I hate myself!!!," I found most of these parts boring. There is also an entire chapter devoted to those suffering from anorexia and bulimia that I completely skipped over.
You definitely get over it fast though, and this book was somewhat amusing and as easy read (written on probably a sixth grade level). I was able to read it in two days and found it difficult to put down. My above comments were not at all to criticize the author or discourage someone from reading this, but I would advise an older teenager to perhaps look into other options or even consider reading Dr. Phil's book and deal with the irrelevant parts.
The bottom line, though, is that this book is definitely helpful to anyone of any age. I personally liked the suggestions of ways to distract myself when I want to snack (I now will take a shower, go for a walk, or paint my nails). The nutritional plan is well-organized and easy to follow, and I actually like this chapter more than the one in Dr. Phil's book. There are certain "fluff" keys I think are used only to make the book longer, but the ones that help really do get the job done. I wish the best of luck to anyone embarking upon a weight loss journey; this book will definitely give you the push you need!

  5. Out of all the diet books that I have read, I love this the best. I am a 31 year old adult and used this book over dr. phils and lost 15 lbs. Very easy and clear cut well worth adding to the library.

3 comments about GenderSpeak: Personal Effectiveness in Gender Communication.
  1. This textbook is now available in second edition, as of the fall of 1999. The second edition is significantly updated, with more references to the impact of technology on communication between the sexes and more attention paid to issues surrounding diversity. A new, highly provocative chapter has been included on power abuses in human relationships. Three main topics--sexual harassment, sexual assault and dating rape, and partner violence--are the focus of this chapter.

  2. This book is a great resource for any college student studying communication. One of the co-authors of this book is an instructor at the school I attend. The book really gets into the gender differences in communication just as the instructor does in class. I highly recommend it for anyone interested in the topic.

  3. I am a university professor of linguistics. If I were teaching a course in this field, this is the textbook I would use. It truly introduces the range of topics in the field in a manageable, engaging way. Excellent.
