  1. My doctor recommended this book, so I bought the book and book on CD to listen to on the way to work.

Dr. Phil - like him or hate him - has some very good information here. Weight loss and diet control still boils down to the basics: Eat less and move more...but you have to start with eating healthy and getting your habits and mindset ready to get yourself more healthy.

Old habits are hard to break, but Dr. Phil's solutions are not rocket science, and could save you from many health problems and weight gains. They are simple, easy to follow instructions and mindsets that will help you suceed.

It's working for me, and I know if you have a family health history as I did, it can work for you to. You may not like Dr. Phil, but his advise, foundation, and information is right on the mark.

  2. Very helpful in teaching which foods to help up your metabolism and use as fuel more efficiently. Also helps you to know which foods are less healthful and to limit them. Rapid Start program helps a lot.

  3. Sorry, but for such a critical hinge to success being 'getting in touch with this' and 'knowing pivotal things', I'm destined to fail with this book. I just don't know what he's wanting me to look for and the few answers I gave turned out to be 'what it doesn't mean'. Holy cow, he should include a copy of his psych degrees for us to borrow till we get through the program.

  4. This is an OK book. Pretty easy read and it doens't take a rocket scientist to decode it but it is just OK. Kinda long at points but he does a good job at putting it on the common mans language. I ahve read better books like "Body By God"

  5. I found this book put together so that it's extremely hard to find any particular food that you're trying to figure out. I can't use it as a reference, which is what I wanted. I've totally given up on it. I need all the foods listed in alphabetical order with all of the information stated. This book does NOT accomplish that. I expected much more of it/him. Totally wasted my money on this one.

3 comments about Vander's Human Physiology (Human Physiology (Vander)).
  1. I took Systems Physiology from Widmaier (the author of this book) and the course was phenomenal. The book served as an excellent reference and an exciting read. The only real downside to the book is there is so much interesting information that it is easy to get sidetracked when you are trying to study.

  2. This book is really hard to plough through. It's not written in an energetic way -- it's enthusiastic, but not particularly bright. Sort of Gee whiz, but not scholarly. Very lame writing. Not great use of diagrams either, though there are a lot of them.

  3. Between college and medical school I've had spent a lot of time with physiology books and this is a good one. If I want to pull one book of the shelf to look at some system or pathway this is the book I grab first. While the it is written in an accessible and engaging way the flow charts are its greatest strength. Vander's diagramming is the best out there. Often times a single figure will cover what other books need pages and pages to cover.

This book is great because it isn't trying to be all things to all readers. It is not an exhaustive reference text; instead, it is the sort that can be read cover to cover. I would describe Vander's as a great starting point for those who will go on in Physiology (MD/PhD) or look at physiology for those who are interested but do not aspire to mastery (the English major interested in science).
It sits somewhere between the crushing detail of books like Boron & Boulpaep and the "why it matters" approach of Costanzo.
For those who are looking to get their lifetime mastery of physiology from a single class experience Tortora & Derrickson might be a better bet.

5 comments about Life Strategies: Doing What Works, Doing What Matters.
  1. I thoroughly enjoyed these CD's. It has given me a sense of self and assisted with many areas of my life. I suggest anyone having relationship, self esteem, life directional issues or you just want an insight in to human nature, I advise you check this product out!

  2. As a fairly new Amazon reviewer, I picked a few of my favorite "older" books that I wanted to weigh in on because they have stood the test of time. Life Strategies is one of these.

This book by Phil McGraw captures and keeps your attention from the first page of the introduction (where he tells the story of how he met Oprah and took the first steps from being a litigation consultant to the country's life coach). He shares personal experiences of what some would call "light bulb moments" or times he "got it". He distills the life lessons he's learned into a clear action plan for a better life. Get out a pencil and actually do the exercises to best create real change.

Highly recommended to all who want more out of life.

  3. I have actually been through a long period of spiritual chaos. I have owned this book in the past. I also owned many other books that are of this kind. This book is actually useless. The best thing to do in times of turmoil is to keep things SIMPLY. That is the best solution. Think in a positive way but not to the extreme end that is advocated in all these self improvement books which are actually self DESTRUCTION books.
For those who question my opinion, I have been severely depressed for over 6 years. I stop being depressed back in 2003. I am currently a psychology major. REAL psychology books are VERY different from these SHAM books.
I hope my review have helped someone. If you have books like this, you should throw them away.

  4. Every person's experience in a reading a book is their own, and therefore, unique. I took away a sense of this book "making me think" and asking myself hard questions about life. I felt the exercises were way too long, but I got a much needed dose of mental focus from reading it.

Dr. Phil offers so good, sound, ideas that will cause you to look at how you are managing your life and how you can do it in a better way. I recommend that you read this book.

  5. Despite being embarrassed to buy this book (I felt like a loser handing it to the cashier), I bought it anyway because I like Dr. Phil's show--he's entertaining. However, I didn't find this book nearly as helpful as Wayne Dyer, The Secret or Eckart Tolle. I didn't take anything away from it, and I wish I had bought something else instead of this book. Sorry Dr. Phil! I still love your show and that brilliant masterpiece, Dr. Phil House.

5 comments about Leadership: Enhancing the Lessons of Experience.
  1. This is a required text for a business class at Lawrence Tech. University in Michigan. It is full of diagrams and charts and basic jargon-filled info that everyone should know without having to spend $135! And this is in the FIFTH edition, so that used books are hard to come by, and the price just goes up. If you are buying it you are probably forced to. So sorry! BORING, BORING, BORING, and just filled with common sense that one should know if one has ANY experience at all.

Maybe this would be useful for a writing course on how to bore students to death and make money by making new editions with little changes.

    What a rip-off!

  2. Haven't actually used this book yet for my class, but I'm sure it's a great textbook.

  3. The seller has refused to return my emails as well as failed to send me my purchase. I have asked for a refund and they have failed to do that too. Therefore, they made easy money without providing me the item I purchased for my current college course. I totally do not recommend purchasing any item from this seller. If you do, you take on the risk of not receiving anything!

  4. This was a requirement for my MBA studies. I found the book very informative, well structured, very clear and to the point, with sufficient examples provided to explain the concepts. Leadership is a very broad and deep subject and the authors have managed to make the subject more interesting and engaging. I gained a lot of insight in my own leadership style and was able to identify points that need to be strengthened or revised in my own strategy. I recommend the book very much to all who are interested in leadership

  5. Yes, this book is used at the Naval Academy. I am a Midshipman there who has just finished my junior leadership course, and I HATE THIS BOOK. It's written for academics and theorists, not practitioners. If you removed the parenthetical citations, the page count of this book would probably be cut in half. I'm sorry that I don't have an alternative for you, but if you actually want to learn how to lead people, the first step is not buying this book.

2 comments about Psychiatry Pretest (Pretest Series).
  1. This is an excellent test preparation book. The questions are well worded and make sense, the answers are very instructive. I found that the answers were very comprehensive and reading them was reviewing for the test. Each subject was covered with 50+ questions that hit all the high spots for the test. This is a must have review book.

  2. I used this book to prepare for the psychiatry shelf exam. Overall, I liked it. Some of questions themselves are not reflective of the shelf question style, per se; the questions on the shelf are much longer, and the questions in this book tend to focus too much on drug half-lives and epidemiology. Also, there were a few blocks of questions that were totally useless for the shelf --- particularly the section about theories of development (Piaget, Freud, Erikson, and all that jazz). However, the questions about specific psychiatric diagnoses were very helpful. Spending the time to read through the answer explanations is crucial, even if you answered the question correctly! The explanations are the real strength of this book. In sum: a worthwhile investment!

5 comments about The Relationship Rescue Workbook.
  1. As long as you have the Relationship Rescue book. He guides you through exercises in the book which makes this a redundant purchase. The book is superlative, and I am sure the workbook will be helpful for some, but don't feel it mandatory. It's more an accessory.

  2. Did not work for a relationship of marriage with a 1 time affair involved. Book was good to start a fire with though. + Make Dr. Phil rich. I recomend "David DeAngelo" instead. Hes much better program.

  3. Its unfortunate that people buy a book to expect IT to fix the problems they have allowed to get out of hand or self create out of ignoring their spouse/partner. If you want a book to give you ideas, plans and a way to help YOU succeed in taking the positive steps to fixing or creating a better relationship then this IS the book to do it, but again- people tend to have problems with honesty even in a private questionaire and unless you can be honest with youself it wont work, not to mention your just prolonging and continuing the sugar coating, problems dont go away and it isnt fair to your spouse either, you need to give them 100%.

A book isnt going to magically fix anything unless your willing to apply and make changes..

But here is some advise that is free- if you dont want a divorce keep your pants zipped and or your skirt down. Dont lie, be faithful and respectful-COMMUNICATE- we are not mind readers-yet. Do not make excuses for those "late work all nighters" and certainly let your partner know you appreciate them. SEX is like Air--- your not gonna miss until your not getting it, so if you/your partner isnt getting it at home--- they/you are getting it somewhere else. DO NOT confide intimate information or whine to the opposite sex about your partner, its precurser to an affair.

BUY the book and read it, listen to the words-- but lets face it-- once the trust is gone its gone.. You need to earn it back, or they need to be willing to trust you. If you are not happy then make changes dont compund it by being selfish.

  4. As always, Dr. Phil has insight that makes perfect sense but the rest of us just don't get quite so easily! He tells you like it is and expects you to do nothing more than be honest with yourself. He has excellent exercises to do that require some soul searching at times, and his advice is thought provoking and effective! I highly recommend this book if you are having relationship issues, and neither of you wants to end it, but neither of you knows how to fix it either. It really helps if you both do it together but one person could get a lot of advice and direction to go too. Also recommend you get the workbook that goes with this book...makes it much easier than a bunch of notebooks everywhere with the exercises he has you do throughout.
I don't think you will regret this purchase. Dr. Phil ROCKS!

  5. This is a great asset to people that want an in depth look at their relationship.

5 comments about Self Matters: Creating Your Life from the Inside Out.
  1. Overall, I don't think this was really what I was looking for personally but this was still an easy set of tapes to listen to. Dr. McGraw is an excellent speaker and kind of funny at times. It's worth the money if you are looking for positive thoughts on changing your life or changing habits in your life. Give it a try!

  2. Good if you are willing to do the work. I like the inspirational talk at the beginning, but wasn't interested in the rest. Tried reading the book first and had a hard time getting to the end...now I know why.

  3. This book changed the way I look at myself and the way I look at the rest of the world. One of the best books I've ever read and I recommend it to anyone who wants to change their perception and get the most out of their life.

  4. Self Matters is Dr. Phil's self-help guide to achieving awareness of ones true self, which he believes will lead to a more rewarding and fulfilling life. Dr. Phil postulates that we are ultimately responsible for the way we are, what we think, feel, and how we behave. Even if we are living with a fictional self-concept of ourselves, it is because we have chosen to do so. The problem is that we tend to make these choices based on the expectations or influences of others, or based on external events for which we have no control.

Self Matters tends to be simplistic in its approach and also in the real-life examples Dr. Phil uses to illustrate his points. Of course, it has to be if the average person is going to use this book as a guide to practicing therapy on themselves. However, Dr. Phil does provide some key insights into the nature of relationships and personal behavior, and uses a number of interesting labels to describe the determinants of our thinking and behavioral processes.

This book will be of benefit to people who meet the following criteria (per Dr. Phil): You believe in God, and that God has a plan for you. You believe that you have a purpose in life, and if you dont realize that purpose, your life will be unfulfilling. You have had one or more profoundly negative experiences in your childhood that has altered your thinking and behavior in a negative way. As a result, you have developed a fictional concept of your true "authentic self", and this "fictional self" causes you to make bad choices/decisions in life. You tend not to be aware that you are living a life that is based on this fictional self.

Dr. Phil then outlines a lengthy process of self-awareness exercises, that involve you recounting your significant life experiences, choices, feelings, beliefs, self-concepts, and their related consequences. Through the process of reviewing, uncovering, and understanding your life's key moments, you become aware of their signifance and value, which will be either positive or negative. With this new awareness, you can create an action plan for changing your thinking and behavior, in a way that will eliminate your fictional self-concepts, and restore you back on track with your authentic self. Or so the theory goes. The older you are the harder it will be to effect this change.

Whether you are successful with Dr. Phil's guide seems to depend on whether you really want to change, your honesty and sincerity with your self, your level of commitment, and your faith in God. Some may be wondering how God fits into the science of psychotherapy, or whether psychotherapy alone, or religion alone, could achieve the same result. Finally, I found it interesting that Dr. Phil would quote Carlos Castaneda in this book. Is Dr. Phil practicing psychology or shamanism, or a little of both?

  5. This is a great book to kick start your personal relationship with self. Dr Phil uses his personality, experience, and education to help others learn the valuable lessons of life. I could totally relate to his book.

Great addition to finding a healthier life, while keeping it simple.

5 comments about Love Smart: Find the One You Want--Fix the One You Got.
  1. I purchased this book in a mall bookstore. I have the hardcover version. I was glad that he offered some much needed warnings about meeting people through personal ads, and the internet. Some people need that, and from the thousands of ads I've read over the years, a whole lot of people are using this methold, without thinking through what they are really looking for. But I feel that the core of phil's system is not new. He does exhort people-and I feel that this applies to either gender, to not try and mold onesself to mr anybody. Good for you, phil! THAT has needed to be said for a very very long time. Other that that, he spends the remainder of the book, telling seekers that what ever kind of person you are looking for, be where they are. Well, I'm a DIY wannabe, and I love bldg supply places and the like. But very honestly, I ain't got TIME to spend my few free saturdays, or what little free time I have, running from one bldg supply or electronic bric a brac store to another, or, for that matter, the engineering books at the public library, hoping MAYBE to meet the right person. the basis of any relationship I would want to have, would have to start with very similar spiritual beliefs, and the type of church I go to, very few decent single men come near, let alone stay there. I did "fall over' the right person, in a big library in california, as a young woman. I could tell the guy was very very interested, and when it happened to me, I was entirely stunned, having had an ugly duckling mentarlity all my life. Only prob was-he came along two weeks after I had gotten married, to somebody I wasn't in love with(sigh). Welcome to armerican life kids.

  2. Since I'm not interested in dating and my husband doesn't want to be fixed, I had to ask myself why I was reading a book about single women looking for Mr. Right. I guess I am curious and I wanted to know what Dr. Phil's "Fix the One You Got" entailed. To be frank, this is not a book for married couples who are seeking a more harmonious relationship. This is strictly a book for women who want to find Mr. Right.

Dr. Phil spends a great deal of time explaining why you are worthy and what you should do to capture a man's attention. What are men really thinking during the dating game and how can you become the woman they can't stop thinking about? This book begins with some pretty amusing letters about dating and then takes an especially honest look at self-esteem issues.

The chapters on how men think are very revealing. You can even amuse yourself by writing down all the qualities you'd like in a dream man. I was amazed at how many qualities my husband actually had once I wrote out my list.

Overall, Dr. Phil gives some sage advice to women who want to play the dating game with a sense of purpose. There are "icebreaker questions" to use in any situation and lots of hints and tips for being a winner in the game of love.

So despite the title of this book it is mostly for single women who are trying to understand male behavior. If you are already married then this may not be the book you are looking for and you may want to buy All You Need Is Love and Other Lies About Marriage: A Proven Strategy to Make Your Marriage Work, from a Leading Couples Therapist.

    ~The Rebecca Review

  3. Say what you will about Dr.Phil, but he does know his stuff. Also, he's got a great prespective on dating and in this book, it shows. I learned a lot and was happy to read this book, which has helped me in numerous ways. I also liked and would suggest another dating book which, along with "Love Smart" has also helped me: Dating Sense: The Practical Way to Meet, Date and Marry the Right Person .

  4. This is ludicrous. Dr. Phil was married before but they divorced - he didn't fix her. (as if there were such a thing)

His popularity has gone to his head. I still watch the show if the topic is interesting but WHY does he think we all love Robin? I avoid the shows with her completely. I was married to an Army Officer for over 30 years but it didn't make me qualified to lead troops into battle. He thinks we want her opinion on everything. I don't!

You cannot post any differing opinion on his website, that's too controlled!

  5. I love Dr. Phil, I've read most of his books, and this one is a real eye opener.

  1. "Prioritize exercise in your life. It is just too powerful a fat fighter for you not to have it on your side. There is absolutely no way you can control your weight for a lifetime without it." ~ pg. 199

If you are tired of fad diets, there is a better solution. Dr. Phil promises success if you are willing to change your diet permanently and exercise regularly. First, he shows you how to break free from destructive behaviors and your reliance on willpower. Instead he explains how you can program yourself for success. This involves getting a handle on your internal dialogue, tackling emotional eating and dealing with overeating.

The section on High-Yield Nutrition is interesting. Sample meal plans show you how you should be eating. This is more than just a diet it is a program that identifies areas of your life that have been causing you to fail at weight loss. The program relies heavily on exercise and getting your eating under control. For the most part this book is encouraging and will help you to reach your weight loss goals.

If you have tried everything and still can't lose weight (you are eating right and exercising) then there is a chapter that deals with some of the reasons you may be weight loss resistant.

    ~The Rebecca Review

  2. This is the first book I have ever gotten on CD. It is like Dr Phil is talking only to you. It is informative, different and makes you think about weight loss in a totally different mindset. It is an excellent listen.

  3. A visit to a doctor just over two months ago revealed that I was obese, with a high body fat percentage and low muscle mass level. It was made clear to me that unless I reduced my weight from 80 kg (176 lbs) to at least 70 kg (154 lbs), I was at high risk of developing diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure or stroke. I had to reduce my weight and hence I needed a good book to guide me through the process. "The Ultimate Weight Solution" is among the best book that I got hold of.

The book provides realistic and well researched advise on how to reduce weight. The book teaches how to behave and think about food and the appropriate exercises to lose weight on a lasting basis. The book explains how people often lose control of their weight. Methodically and step-by-step, the book explains how to identify what to eat and when to eat and the right kinds of exercises that help to burn the fat and develop muscle. The book has a number of questions for you to answer and help audit yourself which I found very illuminating and useful. The comprehensive food list in the Appendix is also an excellent bonus that you can use as a quick reference guide

Well, I followed Dr Phil's instructions and now I have got into the habit of eating the right kind of foods in the right quantity consistently, I have an exercising schedule and I consistently engage in habits that avoid harming my body such as not smoking or drinking alcohol.

Thanks to the advice in this book, I am on my way to the optimum weight, and I now experience high level of health, energy, vitality and control over my life.

  4. When I read this book I was excited to learn some new tools to help me. It has helpful guidelines and tools to get you through the normal blocks of weight loss.

His track record of weight loss participants says it all!

  5. Great book that is very real! It's a "get real book" that helps get past the excuses that keep us overweight. A great read. Anyone following the advise should lose weight. This book is not based on one diet, but on eatting well for life and not over eating.

  1. Learn how to manage your family on a day-to-day basis. This book will help you improve your relationships with your family members.

  2. I found Dr. Phil's advice to be very practical and reasonable. This book really helped me put my family first.

  3. Dr Phil is inspiring as always. I really enjoyed this book and I think Dr. Phil is powerful and innovative. I also think his work is similar to the encouraging words of another doctor, Dr. Joan. Dr. Joan is just as good in my opinion. I would recommend her for more inspiration and positive words.

    Chris

    Check out Dr. Joan at:

  4. This book is on my mind because I recommended it yesterday while talking with a single mother. She clearly loved her kids but was at her wit's end with them not listening, not helping out at home and constantly arguing with her and each other. She said she had "tried everything" (which she later acknowledged she hadn't once she saw how she eventually gave in because the disciplinary tactics she used "weren't working"). This book immediately came to mind as one that is easy to read and will give her guidance on setting boundaries, sticking with them, being consistent and doing "what it takes" to get her family back on track.

This book offers an assessment for parents to identify their parenting style and their child's personality style and provides strategies to best adapt their parenting accordingly. Make sure to measure each of your children separately - amazing how kids in the same family can be so different!

This book is especially recommended for those who are (or quickly heading toward) parenting teens. Even if you feel like you've lost control of your teenage kids, this book's message that it's never too late to turn things around is reassuring and empowering. Some parents might need additional professional help but this book provides a solid start for all.

  5. The CD set contains 6 CD's with a downloadable PDF file (75 pages) that replaces the workbook. The workbook is 200+ pages but is MUCH more broken down if you need that.

The program is interactive, pausing now and then for you to read from the printout. However, the CDs are good to play in the background or in the car for refreshing or letting it sink in.

The PDF file needs Adobe Reader (free online) to print. I had trouble doing this. I realized that after downloading Adobe Reader I had to go into my start-up menu and search for Adobe, right click it and create a shortcut for the desktop. Put in the cd, open Adobe Reader and go to File, select "open", and from the drop-down box at the top select the Drive the says "family First". The PDF file will appear and you can print it out.

I have the book and find the CDs much easier to follow and find time for. I synced it to my Ipod and can knit/wash dishes etc while I listen. My kids can play and be loud without disrupting my "reading".
