4 comments about Broken Families Broken Homes: Protecting Your Family from the Epidemic of Divorce.
  1. This is a must read for any man who is getting married, having an affair, unhappy at home, fantasizing about other women, raising children,or using drugs or alchohol. It is a must read for clergy, marriage counselors, or any person giving counsel to men, women or couples on marriage. The author comes accross as giving a lot of advice, however the advice is powerful, hard hitting and will cause you to think about being a better person. Rick Douglas hits the nail on the head about our elected leaders in this country and what needs to be done to begin a cure to this epidemic of broken homes and families. I suggest that any women feeling a victim of husband or ex-husband behavior needs to read this. It is easy to read with no hidden meanings or agenda.

  2. A tremendous read for every person! The author really brings out cutting edge points on the divorce conundrum. This book needs to make it's way into every home in the country. This is a must read for every politition on Capital Hill as it spells out not only the damages caused by divorce on a personal level but the damages caused by divorce on a social scale as well.

  3. A totally cathartic experience for me. I realized my marriage was, unfortunatly, not unique-not the only one to go through these devastating ills. The author lays out clearly the things that chip away and erode a marriage. Truth is no couple imagines their marriage will be temporary. The issues this seemingly "regular guy" talks about are the exact things that led to end of my marriage. I wish my first husband would have read this before he decided to cheat, before I couldn't forgive and before my kids had to start their life in a broken home. I recommend this book to all married people and those considering marriage. It is a frightening reminder of how easily we can crush something so precious, and just how far reaching the effects are. A great wake up call to America and a must read for any man you love and want to be happy.

  4. In today's society, one mired by mass marketing geared toward instant gratification, microwave dinners, the commercial promise of the good life and the drive through divorce Mr. Douglas has worked diligently to lay down a road map to avoid the pitfalls of the all to common broken home. In what could be referred to as the "me first" era the author explains the incredibly destructive effects such thinking can have not only on our personal relationships but those of our children and our children's children. Mr. Douglas espouses upon his belief that popular culture, the media, and even our politicians are to blame for the shortcoming of our commitment as a nation to the sanctity of the family unit. In the classic sense, we have all become a product of our environment one in which jealousy, adultery, divorce, and gross miss use of power have become all to common place. (Perhaps so much so that they have become almost the accepted or expected norm). An interesting read that I think anyone can learn from.

  1. Deciphering Amber

If you are looking for practical life skills, you will find them in this touching and illuminiating story. It is rare to find a fictional story that is revelant and helpful to the lives of ordinary people. It revolves around the disappearance of a young woman and how it changes her life and the lives of her family and friends. The main character, Amber, has lost her memory by a blow to her head but manages to free herself from an abductor and get medical help. Authorities botch up any attemps to locate someone to recognize her by missprinting her age in the newspaper as 12 instead of 21.

The story tells of the process that Amber took to become independant and get her life back on track. It tells the reader of her courage and hard work, and how the friendship of Cora enables her to return to life outside the shelter center.
Amber's process of healing includes joining a womens' group. Each week they read passages from many books of interest. Ms. Dickinson, the author, teaches us, without preaching, that with a belief in oneself, and along with perseverance and friendships, a person can lift themselves up and climb out of bad situations; by looking forward and setting goals it is possible to achieve our desires. She also accepts that bad things happen, like the abduction and that some marriages cannot be saved. We learn that it is important to make peace with your parents today because tomorrow may be too late. We learn that when you help others it comes back to you in ways you would not expect. By planting a garden you can enrich your life through the simple act of seeing its beauty on a daily basis--little things matter.

The gift of this book to any young woman can make a positive difference by teaching her to value herself.

  2. Deciphering Amber is a wonderful read!! It was an amazing book that weaves a story of very resourceful women with a little self-help information interspersed throughout. A very easy, enlightening read that makes you feel you can do anything you set your mind to. Would definately recommend this book!

  3. This book is not only an enjoyable read, but also a self-help book to make us realize we can rise above bad situations. It is wonderful to see Amber's life unfold and see her become the wonderful woman she truly is. I would recommend this book.

  4. After reading this remarkable I story, i found myself questioning my life. The story revolves around this woman who lost herself and in the process of finding who she once was, she discovered a whole new woman. Change is possible for anyone and that really is what this book taught me. The different characters seemed to be real and alive and I just felt like they were people I knew somewhere, people that I connected with or will connect with at some point. The different morals and lessons that were brought out in the various characters were accurate and true. Its a real life book in a real life world with real life people. Everyone can take something away from this book and that is why I love it and recommend it to everyone! Its not a self-help book more of an self-awareness book!

5 comments about Dumped!: A Survival Guide for the Woman Who's Been Left by the Man She Loved.
  1. This book is a bunch of trite cliches and not worth much in terms of trying to understand what's happening to you when you go through something so devastating. It's all about buying yourself lattes and getting massages. It is really a recycled version of "The Rules" applied to a breakup and it is not worth your money.

  2. A friend gave me a copy of this book "Dumped" and it has been like finally having a friend who understands what I have been through. Six months ago,my husband left me for another woman after 16 years of marriage. I didn't know that there was Hell on earth until that happend. When you are dumped, it is really hard for other people to understand the trauma and emotion. While I got sympathy at first, after the first few weeks, people don't want to talk about it anymore and yet I couldn't seem to control my own emotions and began to feel like a pariah. While I understood that, I really didn't understand a lot of my own emotions and trauma. Ms. Warren has put it all in perspective for me and really made it easier to cope with this dramatic change in my life. I just hope that many other women ( and men) will have the chance to read this book. I would suggest that it would be useful to read it before you may be faced with a breakup as it would really help you to understand the signs and perhaps deal with them without so much pain and trauma. Thanks for your help Sally.

  3. For the first time in my life, I found myself being the "Dumpee". Somehow, in the fog of hurt I found the book Dumped! I began reading the preface and immediately found three things that had happened to me that are "classic" in being dumped. I was hooked and rapidly read this wonderful book. It was of great help in my realizing what had happened, what I could do to pull myself out of the slump I was in, and to realize that I am still a likeable person. I have since passed Dumped! on to friends who have been dumped...seems to be an epidemic lately. Buy it...you'll like it!

  4. It was very bizarre how many EXACT conversations I found in this book that I had had with my husband (now ex-husband, of course) - this book is the best thing to read when you are dumped! I carried it around with me for months in case I needed a pick-me-up.

  5. I just went on Amazon to purchase a copy of DUMPED by Sally Warren for yet another dear friend who is going through a painful (aren't they all) divorce. I was amazed to read the "Superficial and Useless" review written in 2000. What? Superficial? Useless? Trite cliches? Is this reader for real? Each time I pass a copy along to a "DUMPED" friend, not only do they find it insightful, comforting, and enlightening, but they also swear it has helped them through their ordeal more than any other book on the market. Each teller's tale rings true. This is a marvelous book! I've lost track of how many copies I've shared with wonderful women who have been DUMPED. Until today, I've never heard anything but the highest praise for this work. I wish this reviewer well, but totally disagree with her review.

2 comments about Reflections from a Broken Mirror: Spiritual Values I Learned As a Lds Child of Divorce.
  1. I found that this book really stated what I felt about my own family and dealing with divorce. The author shares with you her experience of divorce and shares some things she did to get her through this hard time. She has also stated many wonderful, helpful ideas about how she dealt with divorce better. You may want to have a tissue near by because this book will dig deep inside you.

  2. I whole heartedly agree with the above reviewer! Have a tissue nearby, I sat down and read half the book in one sitting. It was a a beautifully written, therapeutic, enlightening read that I would venture to say all children of LDS divorce should have this as required reading. It made me deal with deep feelings I didn't know I had. The writer seems to take her experience and make it parallel to your own somehow. It was like it was reading a book written by me, for me, from a higher vantage point later in my life. I am a returning patron of this book -- buying copies today for friends of similar family backgrounds. If the author ever reads this review-- might a say a big thank you from all of us whove made better sense of our grief in the context of the gospel, because of your literary talent and experience.
