2 comments about Shekhar Kapur's Snake Woman Volume 1: A Snake in the Grass.
  1. The premise is OK, but with additions that separate it from the general run of comics. A young woman discovers that she has powers far beyond anything she could have imagined. At the same time her powers emerge, and a big step ahead of her, a cabal of "The 68" is on her trail. They'll kill her if she doesn't master her powers first and kill them - but just what they want adds complexity to the conflict of mystic forces. The mythological underpinning adds depth to the story; because it's non-Western myth, it adds a sense of mystery as well.

Virgin comics made a huge splash when it arrived about a year ago, and this title shows why. They have top talent, lots of it from outside the comics industry and lots from outside of American traditions. That freshness and unique sense, different in each title but shared across the line of titles, gives a competitive edge in the fight for shelf-space in stores and dollars in the buyers' budgets. Production values are high, artwork is competent (though not as painterly as the cover suggests), and the story is exciting, partly because of its unfamiliar cultural backdrop. Give it a shot.

  2. The story for "ASITG" is based on the Nagin mythos in Indian literature, which has been exploited to the hilt in numerous B-grade bollywood movies. What is different here is not only the setting (a contemporary city), but also the treatment to the subject. The reader will alternatively sympathize and hate the main protagonist for her actions (brutally killing off the members of the "68"), all the while asking "What's next?"

The graphic novel aptly demonstrates that if the basic premise or plot-outline is sound, you do not need psychedelic graphics to woo the reader. The stark artwork (poster style) complements the equally macabre storyline.

I recommend this graphic novel for anybody who likes to read stuff thats off-the-beaten-path.

4 comments about A Place at the Table : A Journey to Redicover the Real Jesus with Guidance of Various Teachers, from Billy Graham to Deepak Chopra.
  1. Even if you don't agree with everything that is written in this book you can appreciate the quest of the author who is trying to answer his questions about religion and Jesus. There are so many different points of view expressed - it creates an unobtrusive and honest reflection about Christianity. Bill's personal commentary is also amusing and is a great enhancement to this wonderful book.

  2. William Elliott's "A Place at the Table" is a mostly successful attempt to present the many faces of Christian spirituality in America today. To do this, the author set out on a cross country journey to interview many religious and spiritual leaders on their beliefs about Jesus and the Bible, everyone from Marianne Williamson to Jerry Falwell. The author's approach is inquisative without being didactic, and his more open minded approach makes this a vastly better book than Lee Strobel's similar "A Case for Faith". His struggle to get the project financed is inspiring, and his folksy musings on the road are a breath of fresh air amongst the more serious theological interviews.

The book is not without its problems, though. For one, the interviews have a ring of similarity to them, since all the interviewees are answering from a boilerplate. For another, the folksy musings between the interviews create a tone that at times is hard to pin down. I suspect the author is sincere, but some of these scenes -- like the one where images on a Last Supper painting are speaking to him -- seem unintentionally comic. It's as if he has temporarily detoured into Hunter S. Thompson's Las Vegas.

Overall, I enjoyed the book and would recommend it for spiritual seekers. It has some insights, and an ultimately peaceful message, that will inspire and stimulate.

  3. Perhaps first and foremost, this is a collection of interviews about Jesus with a variety of famous people--writers, preachers, scholars. Interviewees include Christians from the liberal (eg. John Shelby Spong, Marcus Borg) to the conservative (eg. Jerry Falwell, J. I. Packer), as well as those outside the Christian tradition (eg. Rabbi Harold Kushner, Deepak Chopra). Almost every interview is worth reading and has interesting, insightful things to say. No matter what your own views on Jesus are, you'll find things you agree with and things you don't, and probably some food for thought.

All the interviewees are answering the same questions, which gets a bit monotonous after a while, but fortunately, we get more than the interviews themselves. We get to know something of the interviewer, of the interviewees, and of the process of tracking them down. The book is part spiritual autobiography, part travel memoir, and partly the story of the author's attempts, successful and unsuccessful, to get his interviews and write his book. It's a bit of a jumble, but it works, and turns out to be quite readable. Elliott is an appealing guy, sincere, open-minded yet opinionated, unpretentious; and it's a pleasure to spend time in his company as he tries to learn more about Jesus and about how different people view Jesus.

  4. Elliott takes us along on a journey to know more about Jesus. I have been in church all of my life and appreciate this fresh perspective on the incredible being of Jesus.

The writing captures each turn in Elliott's journey, allowing each of us to find Jesus through these people--including through Elliott himself.

5 comments about Quest: Discovering Your Human Potential (Quest (Simon & Schuster)).
  1. This piece is so heavy and so thought provoking that you have to absorb it slowly... just great. It takes you on a spiritual journey into fundamental questions about life and spirituality. But what really makes this compilation of ideas so good is that it offers you real answers, real solutions to your problems and human weaknesses that you can use. Listening to this tape is spiritual therapy. A classic, like nothing you've experienced before.

  2. Taken from a PBS series this is the first of three tapes to come from that effort. It is simple the best compilation of thought provking and stimulating ideas on tape that I have found. I am a counselor who works with adolescents and I am always looking for some way to inspire, motivate, or encourage young adults to begin the process of self knowledge and self awarness and to see beyond themselves into the world they are about to enter as adults. So many tapes are too simplistic or too complicated but this series seem to intrigue these individuals as no other tape I have used has been able to do. It is a series that anyone from early adolescents to geriatrics will find extremely valuable and thought provoking. No schmoltzy solutions, no formulaic set answers to life--just wonderful stimulating ways to encouarage the listener to examine who they are, what they feel and where they want to go. You will listen to this series over and over and will hear something new each and every time.

  3. The Quest audio cassettes are a fine compliment to books by the guest speakers. In some cases the cassettes provide nuances, insights, and clarification not possible in the printed text form. Stephen Covey for example has a deep raspy almost mischievous laugh when he discusses inauthenticity weakening relationships of trust. His sense of humor isn't readily apparent in The Seven Steps... bestseller, but here it is on this compilation. And Thomas Moore's few comments on narcisism are wonderfully refined and to the point, so much so that he does a better job conveying this somewhat difficult concept in speaking than in printed form i.e. "Care of the Soul" where there isn't the same impact. A few of the speakers are too New Agey and fluffy for my tastes but Moore and Covey give the nearly one hundred minutes of listening time great depth and texture.

  4. I enjoy the thought provoking and positive attitude of this book!
    lifts spirits!

  5. Apparently, there was once a PBS-special program
called QUEST: DISCOVERING YOUR HUMAN POTENTIL . . . I
unfortunately never caught it when it was on the air, but was
lucky enough to be able to track down a cassette with
    the same title.

Edited by Deepak Chopra, it featured Steven Covey, Thomas
Moore, Bernie Siegel, David Whyte, and Marianne Williamson,
along with Chopra . . . they all spoke about the mind-body
connection and shared their ideas on how to harness your
    inner power.

With speakers this fine, I came away with many useful
ideas . . . my only disappointment was that the program
did not label the speakers either before or after they had
    something to say.

Yet I believe I was able to identify many of the speakers . . . in
    addition, I gleaned these tidbits:

[Siegel] If you're stuck, then change your attitude toward life. If
you want to be happy, choose happiness.

[Siegel] Most people say, "My day will come." When they realize
they have a limited number of days, that's when they get into action.

[Williamson] Life isn't about so much about making ourselves
better, as it is about relinquishing all the illusions and the blocks
to greatness that are bred into us in the world.

[Williamson] Buckminster Fuller said, "Geniuses are just people
    who had good mothers."

[Siegel] When you do allow love into your life, you have a longer,
healthier life. You are rewarded by the fact. For example, when
you save a bird, you don't expect a "thank you" in return.

[Siegel, quoting advice he got from Ashley Montagu] To be more
loving, act as if you're more loving.

5 comments about Creating Affluence: Wealth Consciousness in the Field of All Possibilities (Chopra, Deepak).
  1. I read "The Seven Spiritual Laws", which perked my interest in this book. I liked this book. It had the A - Z points for affluence and abundance. Plus a terrific list of ideas/words to meditate on in order to bring your mind into balance with your desires. Practical guidlines for persons not used to meditation. And additional scientific information on how the principle of affluence works. How can one go wrong?

  2. This book although very short, should be required reading! From "abundance" to "zest", it covers just about everything required to lead a content, happy, productive and profitable life. I have owned this book for about 8 years and have re-read it many, many times.

The introduction sets the whole tone of the book by stating "there is power in knowledge, desire and spirit, and this power within you is the key to creating affluence". We realize quickly that it is our inborn nature to be abundant... to be affluent. By desiring something, stating our intention, then letting go of our attachment to it, we can recieve all that we desire from life, wether in money, love, position or anything else we may seek.

The first part of the book discusses quantum reality and how we and everything else in our world are all made of the same "stuff", which is primarily energy... or "non-stuff". What makes one thing different from another is the arrangement and quantity of these impules of energy and information.

Part one of the book gives one or two simple ideas under each letter of the alphabet that are short, sweet and very much to the point. Beacuse it is in such an easy to read and brief format, this is the kind of book you will want (and the author suggests you do) read over and over again. Depending on where you are with your life at any given moment, you will pull something more out of it with each reading.

Part two of the book discusses our similarities to the unified field. It discusses the 25 charachteristics of the field and how these are also the characteristics of "Brahman, the source of all creation, as described in the Veda, the classic spiritual text of India". This part, although intersting, was not as good as part one, but overall I still have to rate this book as one of the best I have ever read!

This book will only take an hour or two to read but the messages it sends are timeless... read it again and again so you don't miss a word! It's fantastic!

  3. I love this tape! It's very grounding and I never tire of listening to Dr. Chopra. I had been in a situation where I had tried for over 6 weeks to land a new job. After going on countless interviews and being told "we will be in contact" then never hearing back, I felt the interview I went to on 11/8 would be much of the same. On 11/9 I went to the library and came across the audio cassette. I listened to it daily, just enjoying Dr. Chopra's insites and his reading of the A to Z list. On 11/12 I had 5 messages on my machine responding to my resume, including the interviewer from 11/8 wanting a second interview. On 11/13 I went for the second interview and was hired on the spot. I would be making more money and have more independence than my previous position! And I could feel a distint, yet subtle shift in my perceptions of the world and I could just feel happiness and the Zest for life he mentions. I highly recommend. In fact, I am going to place an order right now for my own copy of this wonderful tape!

  4. I can't begin to do justice to this remarkable tape by Dr. Chopra. His words and philosophy have enriched my life in both subtle and profound ways. A short while after I began to listen to this tape, my life began to offer me wealth & opportunities that simply came my way, without any effort and this flow of wealth & opportunities has continued throughout the five years I have had this tape in my possession. The real beauty of this tape is that you need only to listen to it, (which I do every day in my car), and the wealth and affluence, that according to Dr. Chopra are what the Universe(GOD)wants for us, begin to make a presence in your life without any special effort on your part. So BUY THIS TAPE, (I have the book too, but it really is better if you can listen to the tape every day). Just listen every day and your life will change in fabulous ways, I guarantee it!

  5. This book can make you feel better about anything. Kind of unusual as it goes A to Z a dictionary of Affluence. You may think of this book as a friend that you can always trust for support!
