  1. Everything about this book is fun, starting with that great little exhortation of a title (as opposed to the dry-as-toast POETRY COMPOSITION, or even HOW TO WRITE POETRY). But the real fun is between the covers where the author's breezy approach makes writing poetry seem more like a hoot than a scholar's errand. And what about those graphics? Bogen found a designer with a sense of humor to match her own there. I'll tell you what: You'll never feel the same way about poetry again after you read BE A POET and you'll be glad of the improvement.

  1. Thank you for writing a wonderful and inspiring book. It helps to encourage those of us that have a difficult time believing in ourselves. Thanks,

  2. I'll be brief and to the point. I have read this book many times. Each time it brings light to a specific area of my life that I need to work on. I believe the source of alot of depression, especially in women, is answered in this book. Anyone that finds themselves blocked creatively must read this. 1. I am a loyal reader/user of Shery's materials for writers. She never ceases to find new ways to open up the creative mind I never knew I had. This book is basically packed with one year worth of writing pleasures! If you're a new writer looking for learning and fun writing projects, this book is for you. If you're an experienced writer looking for self-actualizing writing projects, this book is for you. Or, if you're like I used to be, a nonwriter, this book can help you learn to find the joys of writing and self-discovery.

  2. I took the workshop where this book was based on. I must say: this was one of the most inspired things I've ever done.
    Writing was fun again.

  3. Shery has outdone herself with this book! I took the workshop on line and am a proud contributor to the book as well. Any writer at any stage will enjoy each of the 52 weeks' worth of prompts and story ideas! The best part is being able to do any of the exercises at your own convenience.

I must say this book has brought out memories in me that I didn't remember I had! Most were good but it also helped me get some of the bad out and down on paper, which made them so much easier to deal with. I am proud to be a part of this, and I know you will be too!

You'll never have a bad experience working with this book. It is definitely one of the best writing books I have worked with and I know it's going to go far with writers all over the world. Enjoy it!

  4. I've done Shery's workshop in the past and I'm looking forward to doing them again. This book is a portable writing workshop in itself. If you're stuck or just need a little boost, it's a valuable tool to have. I hope that she'll put more books out. Her prompts are encouraging and I've gotten some great inspiration from them. I recommend this book to any writer. As someone who has been published numerous times but never able to quit my "day job", my writing is such an important part of my life. Through Shery's websites and support for writers, I've found a great teacher!

  5. I have read a lot of things from Shery Ma Belle Arrieta, including her newsletter and trying out her WriteSparks software and have enjoyed all of her prompts and writing suggestions.

This book is no exception, as far as the prompts and writing suggestions go. There is, however, a lot of wasted pages in this book and a minor side note, the table of contents is numbered incorrectly. There are lots of blank pages and half of the book is made up of samples of other peoples' writings (which some may find inspirational, but I'd rather write my own material).

The writing prompts are good and I would suggest anyone who feels stuck or in need of some ideas read this book, but I would also suggest they find the book at a discount as the retail price is a bit pricey for the 54-56 pages worth of useful content.

  1. It's evident the book is written by a true Disney fan, plus there are some great little bits of humor that make it quite entertaining. There were a few instances where I was reading a section and thought "oh this quote from Walt would be so relevant, or this movie reference would work here nicely." More often than not, as I read a little further, or read the little notebook quotes, it was exactly what I was thinking of. Then there are the little teasers about future projects like Rapunzel Unbraided and especially the quote from Mary-Jane Ruggels about doing an animal-caper, a mystery and Latin American based movie. I've made a point of collecting Disney books (I probably have at least half of those mentioned in the endnotes), yet this book still offered new stories and insights.

  2. I enjoyed this book and found it's insites fun and entertaining. As for a "manual" for writing in the Disney style it is not. The author even admits that he set out to find the "magic formula" and found there was none. Animation by it's very nature is very fluid and the "script" is actually developed in storyboards not 3x5 cards. To truely appreciate the Disney method would require a book on storyboarding, acting, directing and story development with the script taking second fiddle.

  1. I picked up this book by chance years ago and really appreciate all its taught me about myself.
It is useful and insightful. It asks important questions to get you thinking. It is engaging because it comes in a creative format with blank space for you to write, draw, paint or paste.
I felt it well worth my money.

  2. I have been a high school counselor, and am now a college counselor, and I have found this book to be a great resource to draw from when trying to help students with self-acceptance/discovery. The exercises are very thought-provoking and revealing. For anyone willing to take the time to work through them, the reward is a much greater understanding of self, and an improved self-concept.

  3. This book is a great resource for re-discovery the self and exploring your conditioning. It is loaded with practical exercises that really will help you to make your life better. It can be used as a resource along with counseling or it can stand alone. It is largely based on modern cognitive therapeutic methods that have proven effective and does not push a particular religious orientation although Cheri Huber is a Buddhist and founded a monastery. She is also a woman who has helped many people including herself and certainly has the credibility to put out good material. Very highly recommended for pre-teens, teens and adults. Her other books are very good as well and she has a Self Acceptance audio course that would be a wonderful accompaniment to this book. If you are not working with a counselor, I would recommend getting both to reinforce the ideas and help you to put them into practice. Change is possible, but it isn't always easy!

  4. This book is nothing but exercises - draw a picture of.... write down how you feel about.... I am sure that this book is a useful one, but quite frankly the odds of me finishing this book are zero. I would prefer to jump out of a plane than seriously complete this tedious book!

  5. This journal is a fantastic journal for self-reflection. I have learned a great deal about myself from utilizing this book. I have used Sark's and I liked it, however, I feel that this book gives more guidance and directions. I was looking for something to help me get on track spiritual as I had left my religion. This doesn't focus on religion, it helps an individual focus on knowing or getting to know themselves.

1 comments about Creation's Heartbeat: Following the Reindeer Spirit.
  1. Linda Leonard shares her shaky brand of New Age shaman spirituality legitimized by her certification as a Jungian analyst yet ironically inspired by objectifying a dream image and seeking it in the outer world. Jungian analysts do not necessarily have psychiatric training or a continually updated background in psychology/psychiatry, and Linda Leonard was at her best writing about what she knows -- twelve step programs, creative achievement and the madness of alcoholism in Witness to the Fire, her most valuable and intelligent contribution as a recovering alcoholic who nearly lost her profession and life to her disease. Creation's Heartbeat, in comparison, if you're familiar with her other books, seems the "puella-madwoman" in romantic flight with a "soulmate," a shaky trip with the feel of a substitute for the romantic escape no longer provided by alcohol. Tragically and embarrassingly, though this tale often reads like a woman in her twenties wrote it, you will find a woman in her sixties questioning her separate existence at the relatively peaceful death of her aged mother. A fashionable contribution to the popular "Jungian," "shamanic" literature that reached its peak in the eighties, with an interesting but romantic (objectified dream image) portrayal of the reindeer and nomadic laplands.
