  1. I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone treating or researching anxiety disorders. Wolfe provides an excellent method of addressing anxiety through the integration of cognitive, cognitive behavioral, and psychodynamic techniques. He offers the expertise of his extensive career in research, academia, and clinical treatment in an extraordinarily prosocial manner: it is clear that Dr. Wolfe has developed a method of treatment for anxiety and would like clinicians and patients alike to benefit from his discoveries. This book will help you develop a more comprehensive understanding of your patients and provide an outline for effective holistic treatment. I can tell you from personal experience that once you apply Wolfe's model in clinical practice, all previous conceptualizations will seem superficial, at best. It is a MUST-HAVE for students or clinicians dealing with, assessing, or treating anxiety disorders, however the application of Wolfe's model does require previous understanding of cognitive behavioral and psychodynamic theory.

  1. This book had very good explanations, which where clear and precise. It's examples where shown step-by-step...no steps were skipped, which some texts tend to do. I especially recommend this book to people who are having difficulty with cosine and sin problems. Your math anxiety will be decreased after reading the logic behind the formulas and practising the problems from this book.

  2. At best, the title is an accurate description of the state you'll experience once you've sat down and tried to make some headway. At worst, it's a misnomer. The format is apparently designed to put your mind at ease that, when the next TEST comes around, you'll be fine. Unfortunately, a healthy bromide for test jitters this ain't. A far and away better book is Robert and Carol Ash's The Calculus Tutoring Book, which is designed to actually TEACH calculus without mystification.

  3. First law of calculus: you can't make it easy. It's hard, requires effort and time to comprehend, and can't be reduced to a few hundred pages, written in a faux friendly style and dotted with cartoons. The typos don't help, either. (Typos seem a common link among all the books in the Bob Miller Clueless series.)

I suppose, if you're just getting started, that a book such as this one (but not THIS particular book) would help you achieve a useful overview of the subject, but then you must find a concise, no-nonsense textbook or workbook, where the 'C' word is clarity, not cartoon.

The Clueless series, and others books of its ilk, are generally written with a mandate to be appealing and friendly, goals which are often at odds with teaching the material in a clear manner and not hiding the fact that learning is work.

I'm sure Bob Miller knows his calculus well; he just can't teach it to others while saddled with the 'Clueless' concept.

  1. This is a cute book which would be helpful for children who are struggling with separation anxiety. It teaches children that they can soothe their own fears by imagining comforting scenes or objects, as well as emphasizing the reassuring message that parents will "likely" return.

1 comments about Anxious for Nothing.
  1. First, you'll get an introduction on the whats and whys: Anxiety is an inner conflict caused by a difference between one's expectations and reality; between one's inner values & belief system and his/her real behaviour. It's a strong pull in opposite directions.

You get rid of anxiety by either changing reality, or your expectations, or your behaviour or your belief and value system.

Selfish (becoming rich or famous or powerful) or unrealistic expectations cause anxiety. Not doing everything you can to enhance the situation and circumstances around you also leads to anxiety. Hypocrisy, or knowing what to do and not doing it and vice-versa causes anxiety too.

Then, Mr Hull will take you to a thorough exploration of Paul's words: "Be anxious for nothing, but in everything, by prayer and supplication and with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the Peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, shall guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus" (Philippians 4:6-7).

Next, each part of the passage is dealt with in detail: "prayer" (making it central activity in our daily life); "supplication", "belief" (that He is there, He understands you, He will help you), "thanksgiving" (or seeing the good in your life and in people); handing it over to God; "God's peace" (and joy, which are the result of a life without anxiety, anger, fear or frustration) and guarding one's heart and mind.

Supplication is seen as a real desire to change, as a result of a painful understanding of our mediocrity and blindness, our irrational beliefs and everything that keeps us from growing.

Through everyday prayer we guard our minds from negative thinking, bad memories, bad feelings, dysfunctional and unproductive behaviour patterns and anxiety. We cannot eliminate them all completely, but we can acknowledge them, reject them and give them to God.

Experiencing Peace also requires us to forgive. There is no place for Peace and Joy when the heart is full of hate, resentment and bitterness. The more we pray, the more we know God and his will, the stronger this Peace will be. Even when everything around seems falling apart.

Finally, he spends some time showing the importance of everyday practice .

I liked the book. It helped me clarify a few things in my head. It's written in a very clear and simple way. Anyone can understand it.

Paul's passage is central in the book, but many other passages from the Bible are used. They all add insight and guidence to the issue.

The reason why I didn't give it a 5 is because Mr Hull can be a bit preachy sometimes (what else to expect from a preacher?) and it is a bit repetitive (but others will probably find this a plus). If you can see beyond these minuses you'll find good advice in it.

  1. A lovely book. So real. So touching. I feel like I actually lived it along with Karen Rizzo and her family and that's a gift. I can't wait for her next one. (There will be a next one, I hope??? I wanna find out just what happens with these colourful characters...)

  2. You could send this out to all the people in your life that end up on your lists and they'll love you for it. I read this book in one sitting, couldn't put it down really. It puts the small moments in line with the big ones and reminds you that they all add up to a grand life. I gave it to my mom and she laughed and cried, which she loves to do... this one's a keeper.

  3. ...or the journaler, or the parent, or the child, or - you can see where this is going! As a list-maker myself I found this book to be comforting, but its insights would be available to anyone. Following Karen on her path from childhood through motherhood in bits, here and there, was an amazing experience. I wasn't so sure about the book when I received it as a gift - a book of lists? are you trying to mock me? - but it was a heartwarming journey through which I (along with other reviewers!) laughed and cried.

  4. What a pleasant surprise! I feel like I know Karen better than many lifetime friends and I really dig her! Don't tell Vince the Mechanic:)

  5. As a cronic list writer, I can relate to this woman. I was able to see Karen Rizzo's life change, grow, stumble and reinvent itself. What a treat. Laced with sadness and great joy, this humourous book is well worth the read! I really liked it!!!

  1. This is some of the best popular writing I have read about anxiety. The descriptions of the various psychological phenomena are intelligent. The authors do not talk down to the audience. The best how-to tip was that worriers need to visualize more and use language less in their thought processes.
