5 comments about The Essential Laws of Fearless Living: Find the Power to Never F Powerless Again.
  1. Easy reading and shows you how to change your life by making choices. This reminds me of The Secret and one of my favorite books to change your life to the life you desire, Living The Secret Everyday: My Secret Workbook. If you do not know or understand the Law of Attraction this is the book to read.

  2. Over the years, Guy Finley's output has been truly prolific. Books, cds, videos that interpret timeless spiritual wisdom in a modern way. This book borrows a little from his most inpiring moments. I found it truly inpirational from start to finish, pointing to the true nature of self from many different angles. Guy has a very unique style of sharing the wisdom, often employing little parables, humour and poetic writing. In his audio material, there is the added dimension of his very emotive voice.

To select just one example of what touched me in this book, his unfolding of the biblical verse 'be still and know that I am God' (Psalms 46:10) was a wonderful revelation. He points to the reality that 'who we are' is the underlying stillness beneath our thoughts and emotions. 'Be still and be free.'

  3. This has become my current favorite self-development/motivational book. I've purchased so many books of this type, but always ended up feeling like something was still missing, or I didn't quite get, and end up buying other books in the hopes one of the them would unlock whatever it was I was trying to resolve. I've read it twice in the last 3 weeks, scribbling notes all over it, and I think somewhere inside is the key to that 'thing' I've been searching for. Not sure what exactly what that thing is, but situations that would've been stressful for me [recently] have completely vanished, I realized in hindsight.

As far as personal developement goes I've made tremendous gains, and the urge to keep looking for the next book has vanished and I plan on reading it again in the near future.

I think it's all in the framing. Finley has a way of writing that combines good NLP with the lyricalness of, say, John O'Donohue.

  4. Get this book today. Fearless Living talks to those of us that are spending too much of our waking hours thinking and worrying about yesterdays gone by or tomorrows that have yet to come, imagining circumstances our over active minds make up out of thin air (people looking at us in a funny way so we make up a scenario that they don't like us for some imaginary reason). Hahahaha! Been there, done that!?

This is wasting sooooo much of our time and lives, keeping us from living "right now" and in "the moment". Guy Finley is terrific and you will LOVE the book. It will change your life. It will make you HAPPY!

  5. The wisdom that you will find in this book is very helpful for those who are true spiritual seekers. If you have read any of Mr. Finleys books or heard any of his talks you will love this book. If this is your first experience of Mr. Finleys work then this book is a wonderful choice. Mr. Finley always teaches that we must discover the truth within ourself of what he teaches. If you are looking for a blueprint with A-Z then this book is probably not for you at this time. If you are looking for that peace within yourself or wisdom that you can use in every situation in your life read this book. What a wonderful handbook of spiritual truth that can help you to discover within your self spiritual growth.

5 comments about Help for Your Fearful Dog: A Step-by-Step Guide to Helping Your Dog Conquer His Fears.
  1. I have 5 dogs and years of dog experience.... and this book still managed to point out a few things I haven't thought of.

  2. I have 2 fearful dogs and this book is very helpful. This is an excellent book.

  3. As the "mom" to two fearful rescues - both very different in their fear triggers and how they manifest it, I searched out and found quite a few articles, pamphlets, websites, suggestions, online groups, and a even few other books on the subject, but nothing nearly as comprehensive as the information presented in Ms. Wilde's book. It tackles the issue from nose to tail, giving helpful insights to a myriad of specific fears and how to desensitize a fearful dog to them. For instance, one of my dogs is very wary of anyone else touching her besides me. I have purchased and read every book on shy dogs that I could find to learn how to work through this. Help for Your Fearful Dogs not only covered this topic more thoroughly than any other text I've seen, but offered not one but several step-by-step protocols that were easily understood and simple to do. As a result, my dog is beginning to trust others to touch and even pet her. Further, the book is very easy to read and understand. It is broken up into short chapters that can be read when you don't have a lot of time (or if you simply want to take things slowly and digest the information in smaller bites). If you own a fearful dog, foster or volunteer for a rescue or shelter, or even know someone with a shy pooch, this is the best book you'll ever come across to get the tools (and reassurance!) that you seek!

  4. I wish I had this book years ago, when I adopted my own fearful dog! While it's a bit more easy to guide someone else through the process of rehabilitating a fear-bound hound, taking one on in your own life is a completely different story. As I read this book for the first time, I frequently stopped to wonder how easy my little journey from 6 years early would have been so much easier had there been a book like this to walk me through.

I don't hesitate to recommend "Help For Your Fearful Dog" to my clients who need it and use it as a guideline for helping them work through their program. Just like Nicole to see exactly what's needed, and make it available.

  5. The other reviews gave me such high hopes about this book and maybe my expectations were too high to be honest but I'm not overly impressed so far. There's nothing really wrong with the book but it covers so many subjects that I felt details were skipped that should have been included and still I'm going to struggle to help my dog. The chapters that refer to particular fears are too short and are less about helping to correct the problem than they are about the background to the problem itself. Also the book says it can be read cover to cover or simply used as a reference book by users skipping to relevant chapters. That is not so. Really you need to properly read the first few sections before you skip to the section about your particular problem. Really it's no trouble to read around the subject but why does the book claim to be able to be used in this way??

On the other hand I think her advice is solid and there is certainly useful information in there, particularly if this is the first time you've even thought about trying to help your dog in this way!! I'm absolutely going to give it a go but I wish I had a little more guidance from the book that i purposely bought to offer myself guidance. In this review I want to point out the bad things about the book rather than list all the good things and there are already so many excellent reviews!!

On a side note, I was unimpressed with the author's habit of subtly (you probably won't notice it unless you've read the books by the authors that's she's doubting) belittling other noted dog experts within the book. This was unnecessary and a little petty. Surely most of the people she indirectly belittled are doing good work too and so if Wilde and the other authors are all striving for the same goals, only doing so in different ways, then surely mocking their theories only serves to taint the industry a little bit more.

5 comments about The Tapping Cure: A Revolutionary System for Rapid Relief from Phobias, Anxiety, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and More.
  1. This is a proven method not only helpful for those who suffer with anxiety, ptsd, bipolar, etc. but also proven to help with weight lost as shown on cable a few weeks ago.

The challenge is remaining committed to following the instructions and making them a part of your normal routine in life.

  2. The Tapping Cure is a well-written, informative, entertaining book on an under-utilized but most effective therapy. I would never have believed in its efficacy had I not personally experienced the ebbing of negative, unwanted thoughts and feelings after tapping the way Dr. Roberta Temes prescribed. It has helped many a patient of mine, as well as friends, to rid themselves of negativity and feel so much more happy and free. I give it the highest of recommendations. Just sit back, read, relax, grow, and enjoy!

  3. I have been tapping for over a month and recently read Roberta Temes' book to add to my awareness of this process. I highly recommend "The Tapping Cure", as it is written with clarity, simplicity, and a wealth of information. It has been most helpful to me in making the most of my tapping sessions.

  4. This book is an excellent introduction to EFT. It is easy to understand, and allows the reader to put to use, the EFT techniques right away. It is basic, and I would recommend Gary Craig's EFT manual for even more information and variations of EFT (as he is the founder). However, I found this author's take on the techniques just as effective. She also writes in such a way that you feel like she is talking to you personally. I recommended this book to a friend who bought it and found it just as useful as I did.

  5. This books goes a step beyond the standard EFT information available on the internet and gives ideas on how you can tailor the tapping techniques for a variety of issues. Her many examples drawn from her therapy practice were very helpful.

5 comments about Beyond Anxiety and Phobia: A Step-by-Step Guide to Lifetime Recovery.
  1. This book was very helpful. My psychologist recommended it to help with my counsleing treatment. The author breaks things down for you and makes you realize many things that you can do to live a better, healthier life. It has truly changed my life for the better! I would recommend this to anyone who has anxiety, phobias, even stress.

  2. This sems like it could be a great help for someone suffering with anxiety, however it can also be very overwhelming. It is definately not a quick fix. This is more like a study guide, kinda like taking a class. If you need immediate help, I suggest seeing a professional as apposed to buying this book. If you have plenty of time on your hands and your anxiety os already under control, then this book can be helpful.

  3. I never look to books to give me the ultimate answer. If I learn something from it and can apply it in some way to my life, and if it's writen well enough to keep me interested, it's worth it. This book was very good that way, at least for someone who likes philosopical/psychological stuff.

I've been diagnosed with a general anxiety disorder, and had a bout of depression last year. A very good therapist recommended this to me. In fact, she said that I HAD TO buy it. I did, and learned a lot about various types and triggers for anxiety. The more I learn about it, the easier for me to deal with it. It became a familiar, known side of me, and when I can separate the rest of me from it and look at it, and study it, it becomes less and less relevant. Which is what we all want, right?

And, it helped me understand other types of psychological issues. I don't suffer from all of those, thankfully, but it is sure interesting to learn how those work. Anyway, it's a good read. Enjoy!

  4. Goes along with the workbook by the same author. It is easy to read and understand.

  5. This book was a dream come true for me. I can't take medication for my anxiety and depression. This book helped me find alternatives that set me on the right path. Now I feel a sense of relief and like there is a light at the end of the tunnel. There is also a section on finding your life purpose. It's wonderful and really helped me set a plan into action so I can fill that empty space causing me so much anxiety. I would recommend this book to anyone who suffers with mild or moderate anxiety who needs reassurance and help.

5 comments about Panic Attacks Workbook: A Guided Program for Beating the Panic Trick.
  1. Great workbook, I wish I would of found it 12 years ago. Great exercises, makes sense. Highly recommend if you suffer from panic disorder.

  2. A client told me about this book. It is essentially the same process that I use in therapy. Very good self-help book!

  3. This is without a doubt the best material for anxiety/panic attack recovery. I found myself laughing(in joy and motivation) at a lot of the questions Dr. Carbonell asks- partly because they relate so well to me and forced me to think of how silly my notions of "danger" and "fear" as it relates to anxiety actually are. The author literally dismantles and tears down anxiety for what it actually is- a trick, nothing more, nothing less. I felt as though my long held stuggle with this apparent giant monster of anxiety/panic had been slapped in the face and stomped on. Ater reading this book, I can't help but to think that anxiety is the hack illness of all illnesses. In other words," why am I panicing over something thats completely harmless?" Great Book.

  4. I think the way the author deconstructs panic attacks, in a thorough, friendly and humorous way, makes it easy to see just how harmless they really are, regardless of how painful it seems at the time. I am learning to apply the techniques to manage panic attacks, and have already seen results. I have even found relief with anticipatory anxiety (a whole chapter on that). There are also helpful chapters devoted to public speaking and flying.

I also found it helpful that the author had suffered with his own panic issues and relates how he faced those and handled them. I think that goes a long way to lending credence to the work. Some other authors I have read have seemed too insensitive on the issue and have been too clinical, which caused me to drop their techniques.

I would strongly recommend this book to anyone who has suffered with panic attacks. And DO the exercises and answer the questions! It's a workbook, after all.

  5. If you are experiencing panic attacks of significant intensity with or without agoraphobia, this is a great book to consider. Dr. Carbonell's sense of humor is tops and his writing will make you feel at ease. It is, however, a self-guided program that takes extra guts and moderate motivation, which is sometimes hard to muster when you're experiencing severe anxiety. I tried it for a few weeks and it helped me get back on my feet.

5 comments about Depressed and Anxious: The Dialectical Behavior Therapy Workbook for Overcoming Depression & Anxiety.
  1. I have found this book to be worth while clinical tool. Mara has made a significant contribution with his work in taking DBT beyond the treament of the borderline patient. I am using this book in an inpatient clinical setting with some good results.

  2. This will be an informative read for most, requiring somewhere around a high school reading level. Its layout is pretty straightforward and the concepts are presented clearly.

Whenever people have difficulty understanding a book like this there are three basic reasons:
    1) The material is accepted by the reader but somehow distorted or too complex to comprehend.
    2) The material is deliberately blocked by the reader because it violates some deep seated belief.
    3) The reader is compelled by anxiety and intolerant of the pace the `material requires'. This last one obviously holds a particular note of caution for the readers of this text.

Of the three possibilities, most readers will discover that option one is `not' an option.

I suggest that anyone struggling with option two take a good serious look at Zen. Pure Zen is neither a religion nor a philosophy; it is a `path of liberation'. Its purpose is to free the mind from vicious circles of behavior and thought. And it works! DBT is a union between Zen and western psychoanalytic theory. For those that are interested, the following books on Zen are 'must haves' and should be read in addition to this book:
Zen Mind, Beginners Mind by Shunryu Suzuki
The Three Pillars of Zen: teaching, practice, and enlightenment by Philip Kapleau
Nothing Special: Living Zen by Charlotte Joko Beck

Take this book to heart; it will help.

  3. Can a book save your life? This book saved mine. The book along with therapy.
This book was rather dry reading but the end of the book contains lots of worksheets that can make all the difference. I wish this author would do a book of JUST worksheets. It is a book that was written more for the professional therapists or people studying this type of therapy but I have used it in group therapies and it is powerful and helpful.
When I first started, I tried to read the book but didn't understand it so I ripped out the last 1/2 of the book (Pages 105 - 180)..those were the worksheets and they made all the difference. After that I was ready for pages 59 - 105.
I eventually made it from page 1 and on but it is slow reading.
I know I only gave this book a 3, but it saved my life. It is just that it took three readings before I could really understand it.

  4. This book broke my habit of black and white thinking. I love the use of monitoring my feelings on a continuum. I am always between extremes, which is fine with me. Because of this book, I will never see anything as completely dark.

I suffered from GAD, Agoraphobia and clinical depression. Originally, my doctors put me on medicine for anxiety, but these became addictive. Eventually, I had to withdraw.

Since I could only afford to go to a non-profit clinic, therapy was short lived. Eventually, the doctors put me on a anti-depressant, which has worked well. I remained clean from all drugs and alcohol.

I have been reading books about depression and anxiety; this author places them side by side and I love it.

  5. Although it is called Depressed & Anxious, it does provide a complete explanation of DBT. Once again its a workbook and if you buy this workbook you need to follow the instructions to get the most out of it. DBT isn't easy but its worth trying.

  1. Joan Halifax brings deep wisdom and caring to every moment, and this book is one more example of the gifts she shares so freely. We all deal with death and dying, now or later, ours or others, and this wise book will help us traverse the terrain more gracefully.

    Honey Ward
    www.ExperienceYourPower.com

  2. Healthy, clear, concise guidance, including reflective meditation to care for those who are dying.

At the same time in developing compassion and fearlessness to face the dying, it concurrently provides a guide for healthy living.

Who knows what is most important in life? Those who deny it and live on in ignorant bliss, or those for whom it is already knocking on their door.

  3. Death is as much a part of life as living, but most people do not fear life. "Being with Dying: Cultivating Compassion and Fearlessness in the Presence of Death" is Joan Halifax's explanation why one should not fear death. A Buddhist teacher who has worked with the dying for much of her life, she uses the teachings of her religion to help inspire those of any faith to be better be prepared for what is inevitable, and live for the time they have now. "Being With Dying" is informed and inspiring, making it a recommendation for those who want to further appreciate life.

5 comments about Calming Your Anxious Mind: How Mindfulness & Compassion Can Free You from Anxiety, Fear, & Panic.
  1. it deffinatley helped me out however I found that alot of the information and phrases are used over and over again through out the boook which made it boring to read . I baught this book because its foreworded by Jon Kinn but it did not have his style. I also did not like the cheap white paper its printed on , it feels like a cheap copy that somone made at home with a photocopy mahcine.

  2. This is the Second Edition of this book; one I've been waiting for for a while. I saw the first edition of this book when it was loaned to me by a staffer at a "facility" I found myself in a while back and to say it helped me save my life would be a severe understatement. The simple concept of Mindfulness struck me like a ton of bricks. This is not a book to borrow from your friendly local library, this is a book to get and hold. A book to change your life. Very readable, almost a fun read, were it not doing so much change to my anxious mind in the process. Buy this book, read it, live it and get rid of that pesky anxious mind you've been living with all these stress laden years. It really does help make life fun again!

  3. Jeffrey seems earnest in his desire to help others which makes for an inviting read. His book touches a bit on some modern trends in psychology then ties those learnings to the Buddhist concept of mindfulness gained through meditation. If you want to get the benefits of mindfulness without having to learn or agree with some of the other principles of Buddhism this is a fine book. Unlike Eckhart Tolle, who has recently put out a best seller covering much of the same ground, Jeffrey's book is for people that want less wo wo and more substance in addition to instruction on how to get on the right path. I believe the best book I have read on this subject is still, "Mindfulness in Plain English" by Gunaratana. If you could only buy and read one I suggest Gunaratana. If you have time to read both then read both. In fact read many, along with your practice of course.

  4. this is a great book for the layman and it has helped me understand things about depression and already feeling better

  5. This book is great. I love Brantley's style. He makes the information easy to digest and interesting to read. Best of all he shares personal stories along the way wherein HE USES HIS OWN MEDICINE: I especially liked the hot air balloon ride!
    thank you Brantley-

  1. I have a son that has autism. It is a must read because most of our kids either are under sensitive or over sensitive. This is a very easy to read book. It explains what the Occupational Therapists do with our kids.

  2. There are many books about children with sensory processing disorders. This is the only one I have found that deals with adults who have grown up with it. The book is full of practical advice - actual steps one can take to manage sensory input. It's well organized and has a good resource section.

  3. I found this book while looking for ADD information. I am so glad that I did. I just recently found out about Sensory Integration Dysfunction. This book is very informative in explaining how this disorder is woven into your life and how it plays out in different people. When reading it I found myself saying, "That sounds just like me". The language is a little hard to understand with some of the technical jargon but the sample stories to show how people live with this disorder are great and help the reader to understand what it means. This is overall a good book but I find it just a little to long. If it was more direct and more in layman's terms I would have found it to be better. All in all though, it is good for someone who needs more information on the disorder.

  4. This book is full of sensory information, but took me some time to get it all.

  5. This is all new information to me, and incredibly welcome! I never knew there were others who simply couldn't function if the music was too loud, or who needed to sleep in a sleeping bag or with very heavy blankets. I sort of came across this by accident. It helps a lot to know there are physical reasons for these oddities - it's not just that I'm weak or inadequate because I can't cope with certain things. Plus the whole idea that I might be able to lessen these effects is intriguing!
