5 comments about Municipal bondage: one man's anxiety-producing adventures in.
  1. This is a very amusing read. I don't know much about Henry Alford, but I wish he would keep cranking out things like this.

  2. ...in my opinion! Essays in the style of David Sedaris. The author takes tests for proficiency in dog grooming, hairstyling, and cement mixing. He invents an odd snack that he attempts to sell at a street fair. Best of all (oh, the best!) he investigates the listings for "Bed and Breakfast" operations in the middle of New York City and actually stays the night in several! Quaint country inns are one thing, but the middle of Manhattan? I loved this book and will seek out his other book pronto!

  3. Yes. That's all I'm going to say.

  4. This is one of the most hilarious books I have ever read bar none.

First, Alford provides some incredibly witty accounts of different "investigations" he conducts in New York City, such as hiring a clutter consultant, trying to get some fake heirlooms auctioned off at Sotheby's, trying to find a good bed and breakfast in Manhattan, hiring a nude housecleaning service, etc. In between each of these stories are some hilarious lists, such as "What if Frank Sinatra taught acting at UCLA" or "What if unemployed actors worked at banks instead of restaurants". The whole thing is great.

I found myself consistently laughing at some of the things Alford did in his investigations, such as gauging what happened when he asked the nude housecleaners to do things like bleach his tub or wash his windows from the outside. All in all, this is a very satisfying book for any fan of humor.

  5. MUNICIPAL BONDAGE is suffused with wit, but merely sprinkled with humor. Alford seems to be in search of an Andy Rooneynesque mien, but in most of his contrivances, he makes light of people rather than the absurdity of the situation.

One's inability to acquire certification as a dog groomer, cement mason, cosmetologist or for that matter, dentist (which he did not attempt), has little intrinsic humor. The author seems oblivious to the fact nearly all occupations have an associated degree of skill. If his attempts to milk humor in these predicaments had been primarily self-deprecating, that's one thing but more often than not, he devined for after-the-fact thinly veiled, ridicule, which was patently unfunny. Now, if Clifford the curmudgeonly cocker spaniel had bitten him as he deserved during the groomer's exam, that would have been funny. This book is not Lucy and Ethel in the candy factory.

I don't mean to imply the book was without its moments. Illuminating the idiosyncratics one might encounter in everyday life such as his adventures with Manhattan bed and breakfast proprietors or fraudalent psychic advisors, was funny, though not necessarily, of the 'rolling in the aisles' variety.

Similarly, his lists of "what if's" ranged from mild amusement to banality. Many of the references have not held up well over time. Only the over the hill like me, or someone who has spent way too much time watching classic television is likely to "get" the humor in a dog who becomes pope requesting an audience with June Lockhart.

Essentially, the ratio of chuckles to grimaces was not sufficient to rate this book any higher.

2 comments about Easing School Jitters for the Selectively Mute Child.
  1. After struggling for two years, trying to teach my son's school how to help him, I found this book and gave them a copy. It is like the clouds have cleared! The school finally feel that they have direction from a professional, and we are already seeing a difference in our son.
    Definitely worth buying!

  2. I am a special education teacher and I have searched high and low for a book that would be beneficial for me, my student, and the parents. After reading this book, I realized that this book is a necessity for anyone who comes in contact with a selective mute child/person/student/relative... ECT... I have gained many techniques and information from this book. Prior to this book, could not find any decent books relating to the selective mute except this one. Not only is this book "decent" it should be mandatory! If you do not purchased this book you will be missing out valuable information that the doctors don't even know!

3 comments about Jacques & Spock.
  1. Jacques and Spock are a pair of brother orange socks. They belong to a boy who loves the color orange and only has items that are orange. One day the brothers get separated in the laundry and Jacques gets mixed with the whites. He's now white! When the boy find Jacques in the drawer and discovers that he's now white he throws him out. Will Jacques ever find Spock again? Will the little boy turn Spock into a puppet? Read Jacques and Spock to find out!

The book was very funny. It kept my interest well.

Children who like funny stories will enjoy this picture book.

  2. Identical twin soccer socks, Jacques and Spock, are as different emotionally as they are alike physically. After adventurous Jacques is washed with the whites and bleached, he's tossed under the living room sofa by his owner, a boy who wears only orange. Timid Spock is left alone in the sock drawer, lost without the support of his brother, while Jacques has the time of his life partying with other lost toys and clothing. Although initially relieved to be free of his needy brother, Jacque realizes that a hole in his heart is worse than a hole in his heel. He figures out how to get back to the sock drawer when a glass of indelible carrot juice is left on the coffee table. Kids will laugh at the silly socks and identify with a boy who is probably as messy as they are.

  3. My family had the pleasure of hearing the author read this book aloud. It was a fun read and my 6 and 3.5 year old were highly engaged. We bought the book and have read it several times. My kids can relate to the sibling aspects of this cute story and the parents enjoyed some of the witty play on words.

1 comments about Fashion, Desire and Anxiety: Image and Morality in the Twentieth Century (Fashion & Popular Culture).
  1. With quick-paced, beautiful prose, Arnold distills, illuminates, and reveals the violence and decay which has become the dominant theme of end of the Century high-fashion. Generously illustrated and neatly referenced, she examines how power is wielded through fashion; how fashion blurs and disguises; and, most importantly, how it gives expression to the desires and anxieties of a buying public overwhelmed by a kind of creeping brutality. Never losing sight of historical and cultural contexts, she nevertheless delights in making her point by the exquisite examination of a detail. In a word, remarkable!

4 comments about Reduce Stress & Anxiety (Success World Self-Hypnosis Series).
  1. I found this tape stashed away in a relatives closet, when we were cleaning. It was mixed with some other tapes made by Dr. David Illig, but it was well worn. She gave it to me, and I've been using it since. It works great! I was hoping to get another, because this one is so worn out, but its not being manufactured anymore. I hope it makes a comeback, along with some of the other tapes I would like to order from Dr. Illig.

  2. Dr. Illig addresses self image and guides the listener to relases excess worries. He is careful to note that certain amouts or types of stress are useful and that the listerner is in control. I haven't finished the 30 day cycle but can say that I do envision contnuing with the CD. When I find myself stressed I do use the audio program and have started to examine current and past circumstances and am avoiding traps that have caused stress in the past.If you are stressed out while others around you are not try this cd.

  3. This is a very useful tool for anyone who is under stress. If it is used regularly, you can train yourself to recognize the signs of stress and use the breathing techniques to relax and lower stress levels. I have used this program for several years and have found it to be very helpful.

  4. I LIKE THE FACT THAT I FEEL RELAX EVEYTHING TIME I HEAR THE CD THAT I FALL AS SLEEP, BUT THE REALITY IS THAT IT DOESN'T HELP ME MUCH AS ADVERTISED. I HAD A BETTER SUBLIMINAL CASSETTE I WISH I CAN FIND IT TO RE-SELL THIS ONE ...

  1. Thank you Angela for an excellent book, that told me what was the matter with me. I didnt know that I had an actual medical condition till I read your book and saw all these symptoms and feelings I have had many times and read many scenarios of yours that were very similiar to mine. I even had a husband with the same name and attitude and personality as your ex-husband. And I haven't had near as many attacks since I left him. And just like you I had a very hard time leaving him because marriage is suppose to be for life but I knew it was very unhealthy for me to stay in that situation. Your book has helped tremendously, I now understand what is going on with me. Your book has touched me. It is very easy to read and its great to read about somebody who has personally experienced this and explains it in plain english and not from some doctor using medical jargon. Thank you again Angela..I am now looking to God to help me. I am also in a much healthier relationship with a man who also goes through these panic and anxiety attacks so we are there for each other because we understand what each other is going through. Thank you so much Angela. God Bless You!

  2. I am so glad people can share their experiences with others when they go through something so traumatic. I loved the scriptures I received from the book, I have been searching for scriptures that would help me.( is it not amazing how GOD sends us what we need;-)) Noone can understand what Panic and anxiety is all about until they themselves live the nightmare. Angela lived it, she overcame it, and she shared it with others. That is the whole purpose in life, to live, learn and share with others. Thank you so much, for all the information I received, and for the care that you put into the book. I plan to get my whole family to read this book because it takes understanding something to be able to help someone. GOD will surely bless you in every way, through reading this book.

  3. This book is part self-help, and part autobiography. You won't really find a lot of specific ways to help overcome anxiety attacks here. Most of the techniques are very general in nature, and this book is in no way an exhaustive review of how to treat anxiety or panic attacks.

Still, the book is very inspirational, and any Christian that suffers from anxiety and panic attacks will find it worth reading. Its main virture is really its inspiration though, rather than any specific methods for combatting anxiety.

I found one of the chapters, on Bible verses that relate to anxiety and strength, to be the most helpful. The book is a quick read. You should be able to finish it in 1-2 sittings.

Definitely inspirational, and worth your reading time. There aren't many books available on Christian spirituality and conquering anxiety. If you aren't Christian, and have no interest in becoming Christian, this book won't really help you much. If you are, and you suffer from anxiety, definitely check it out.

  4. Truly inspirational ! I am so glad a christian has spoke up . Too many people think its a mental persons illness and just dont understand it . I think Angela Brittian puts another face on this treatable illness . Were not crazy just suffers of a painful nervous condition . I recommend this book to anyone looking for comfort and help to overcome . The bible scriptures are such a help and comfort .

  5. The book starts out great but then after the pages of ex husband slating and soppy life information I was left wondering whether this book was there to help people or a biography of the author's life? I have found books written by professionals a lot more helpful!
