1 comments about Are We Not Men?: Masculine Anxiety and the Problem of African American Identity.
  1. I didn't like this book at all. I thought it said very little about masculinity and African-American men. Harper is practically the best-known black gay male scholar out there and yet almost every book about gay black men that I've ever read was better than this one. This book is buried in tedious literary criticism. When I think of this book, only two words come to mind, "poor" and "disappointment."

1 comments about Real Solution Anxiety/Panic Workbook (The Real Solution).
  1. The Real Solution Anxiety/Panic Control Workbook is a gem! The author offers extremely helpful insight regarding the foundational issue of shame underlying anxiety and panic problems. The workbook is comprehensive, well organized, and easy to read. The overall goals are to reduce levels of anxiety, to provide strategies and skills for coping with anxiety/panic attacks, and to reduce shame, guilt, and isolation, thus increasing a sense of hope. The Workbook truly offers innovative effective coping skills leading to increased self-esteem. I have recommended this book to my patients with very positive outcomes.

1 comments about Attacking Anxiety & Depression.
  1. This book helps in changing a person's life to being productive after having anxiety attacks. It encourages a person to control their lives and helps the person to overcome these difficulties. There are beneficial chapters for depression, as well, especially those related to positive self-talk, expectations, and lifestyle changes. It is considerably more focused on anxiety, so the benefits for depression are limited.

2 comments about Learn to Relax: Proven Techniques for Reducing Stress, Tension, and Anxiety--and Promoting Peak Performance.
  1. Stress and anxiety are natural parts of the human experience and can actually improve performance in challenging times. But for those of us with more than our fair share of tension, C. Eugene Walker has written a helpful book. Walker draws on theories from many psychologists, psychiatrists and other researchers in analyzing the origins of our stress. More importantly, he also provides techniques for overcoming and reducing tension - including more than 40 exercises that will help you calm down. While his basic principles will sound familiar to those who know self-help and personal-development literature, Walker does a good job of combining and organizing these points. We [...] recommend this book to a general audience, but also to top managers and executives who deal with stressed-out employees or feel the pressure mounting themselves.

  2. Stress management is a considerable task for many people in every sector
of life, in every age group, occupation and aspect of life. The book
illustrates specific steps to take in order to identify the stress triggers and deal with them constructively. The lotus position is the ideal setting for relaxation and tension release. Belief systems, perceptions and uncontrollable events are classic stress triggers which the author tries to address in the book. Subjects can engineer less stress into their week by enjoying family activities on Sundays. This will set the tone for the rest of the week. Goal-setting, brainstorming and hot baths/saunas are classic methodologies to deal effectively with stress. The book would be very helpful in combatting the everyday stress triggers that we all face. The book is a good value for the price charged.
