  1. Heart palpitations, feeling faint, dizzy, strange sensations all over my body, burning feelings in my chest and arms and head, shaking, scary thoughts, wanting to scream, visual disturbances, shaky legs, nausea, flu-like symptoms, feeling absolutely positive that "I'm going to die at this very moment..."

These are only SOME of the symptoms I experience when I have a panic attack. I have suffered for over 10 years and in those 10 years, NEVER did I find a book so comprehensive and thorough.
This book is also very easy to read because it is broken up into small sections and seems less intimidating than a giant tome.

Dr. Weekes mentions things in this book that I never expected to read in a panic/anxiety book---things that I thought were unique to ME. It seems as though all of those piles of books that I bought about panic are all the same with generic information. People with acute FEAR embedded into themselves feel a set of symptoms and sensations that others do not. This book addresses these manifestations of fear.

I was shocked to read certain things because I honestly thought that I was the only one who felt this way. FEAR can perform some disturbing tricks on a body and we don't fully appreciate or want to accept that something as simple as fear can cause such distress ---NOT JUST AT THE TIME OF PANIC ATTACK, BUT CONTINUOUSLY. Since we are afraid all the time, our bodies are in a constant state of unrest and commotion.

I only WISH professionals (i.e. psychiatrists, psychologists, therapists) would read this book to better understand their patients. Maybe, just maybe, they would know what to say to a patient to help him/her instead of filling him/her with pills that intoxicate the body. I do feel that medication is necessary at times, but all too often it is the first choice for doctors. And it is mostly because doctors DON'T KNOW...but maybe they should find out.

Bottom line, if you suffer from panic:
    1. Read this book
    2. Find a psychiatrist who has a clue
    3. Try not to get discouraged if #2 doesn't happen as quickly as you had hoped.

I think HOPE AND HELP FOR YOUR NERVES is the only book you need if you suffer from nervous illness. It helped me in many ways and now I can breathe.

  2. If you have read other people's reviews of this book they pretty much capture everything that is great about this book. I think that most of the reviews are so long because we all want more than anything to thank Dr. Weekes for saving our lives.
We all get asked the question if you could have anyone in history over for dinner who would it be? My answer is absolutely Dr. Weekes but it wouldn't be because I was interested in picking her mind some more; it would simply be a dinner that I would have so lavishly prepared and serve to her in my greatest appreciation of her work. I would hope that she enjoyed every bite.
The book really is that good.

  3. This book is simply a classic. Dr. Claire Weekes is considered a "pioneer of panic disorder". Although originally written in the 1960's it is still perhaps one of the best books ever published on anxiety. It is a simple read, which is the hallmark of Dr. Weekes inner genius. She doesn't speak complicated and does not try to impress you. She simply takes you by the hand and walks your through life with panic disorder. RIP Dr. Weekes, the world is a better place for having known you!!

  4. If you're looking for help with generalized or "free floating" anxiety ... don't bother with this book. However, if you're unfortunate enough to be suffering for severe anxiety and other associated feelings; this book is worth reading.

  5. I love this book. The author has such a dear way of "talking to" the reader, as though she were right there, guiding you through the steps to overcome your anxiety. Some things in it are out of date. For example, she talks about ECT, and how her methods will help overcome anxiety without it. She talks about heavy sedation, under a doctor's supervision, in order to rest up and recuperate from "nervous illness". But all in all, she talks, throughout the book, about concepts which are used today. Without using the same words, she is talking about acceptance, mindfulness, and stress management techniques. One thing to be aware of is that the author describes some symptoms of anxiety, which could mimic a serious health crisis, yet reassures the reader that it is not to be worried about. She reassures the readers that they won't die, that nobody ever died of an anxiety attack. Yet, in fairness to the author, she also emphasizes that this advice applies only if someone has actually seen a doctor and had other medical issues ruled out. Overall, the book may be seen as very soothing, comforting, and pleasant to read. Kate Boswell MFT

5 comments about Indigo Dreams: Relaxation and Stress Management Bedtime Stories for Children, Improve Sleep, Manage Stress and Anxiety (Indigo Dreams).
  1. My daughter (8) loves these stories. We bought the other 2 CDs as well. She really enjoys them.

  2. My son is Autistic, and he loved the first CD in this series when I ordered it for him on a whim. The stories have helped teach him to let go of his anger, and by playing them at night when he's had a particularly overwhelming day I find him having more and more Good mornings. After story time I step out of the room and can hear him following the steps of what are guided meditations for children. Any of the CD's in this series are good. Some are geared a little more toward girls overall, but they all have something for all children. My son's favorite story disc is the one with the Angry Octopus. With the help of these CD's he truly understands now that he has control over his own emotions.

  3. I purchased this CD for dual use: for my clients, and for my children. I was hopeful that it would be useful, but since I know I am quite critical of relaxation/imagery CDs given my expertise as an art therapist, psychologist, hypnotherapist who creates imagery, and conducts relaxation training, I didn't expect to be as impressed as I was. Not only did kids like it, but wanted to listen to it over and over again for entertainment. Even siblings who were not the intended audience enjoyed and requested it. My kids liked the stories loved the details and expressiveness of the characters. I found the voice tone good, and the content of the metaphors remarkably cohesive. Its now a staple in our car as well as a recommended resource.

  4. Not often do I reach out beyond friends, family and our doctors for help when it comes to challenges we have with our anxious child. We sought out help from teachers, doctors and from within - and this series of CD has nurtured our lives!
The CD's by Lori Lite have been the beacon of light for us on sometimes stormy nights. The relaxing bedtime CD's have transformed our evenings into pleasant, happy moments we now cherish with our child. My daughter (age 6) can't wait to put on her CD and enjoy the stories that lull her off to bed without a concern in the world - and I'm not even speaking to how empowered she is in the morning. Thank you so much for producing this series - it's been our lifesaver in many different ways!

  5. My son enjoys listening to this cd at night. If he wakes up after a nightmare we turn it back on in the middle of the night so he can relax and fall back asleep. I would reccommend this product to anybody with a small child that has trouble relaxing at night and falling asleep quickly. I have noticed a big difference in the amount of time it takes for him to fall asleep.

5 comments about Indigo Ocean Dreams: 4 Children's Stories Designed to Decrease Stress, Anger and Anxiety while Increasing Self-Esteem and Self-Awareness (Indigo Ocean Dreams).
  1. I have been using this CD to help soothe my active grandchildren to sleep. They both love the ocean theme and take turns pretending to be the sea child, angry octopus, sea otter, turtle or even the hermit crab.I listen with them and the relaxation techniques work for me as well. All three of us have a deeper more relaxed sleep the nights we listen. I just ordered Bubble Riding and Angry Octopus. I can not wait for them to see the characters we have imagined come to life on paper in a book.

  2. My daughter loves this cd. I was looking for something to help her relax at night and get ready for bed. It keeps her interest, has great messages/lessons and she asks for it everynight.

  3. I bought this CD for my son a couple of years ago. My son, who is now almost 7, suffers from ADHD and Anxiety, and the anger and frustration that go with it. He STILL listens to this CD at bedtime at least 3 times a week. He LOVES IT! In his words, "It is soothing. I really like Bubble Riding because it is fun and I can imagine floating along in colorful bubbles." I personally like the Octopus' Garden as this one has really helped him control his anger and realize that he is not the only one who gets quickly angered. This CD gave him a fun and easy method to calm down and relax. Thank you so much! Kelly Giaquinto

  4. My son is 10 and has ADD, needless to say going to sleep at night has always been a battle. Up and down, I need water, etc.... His therapist recommended buying him a meditation cd. I can to this website and took a chance on this cd, it has been amazing. He can't go a night without it now, he needs this cd to help fall asleep. He does all the exercises and is usually asleep by track 3. Wonderful product, even for a 10 year old boy!!!

  5. This cd is a miracle. I have a four year old and a six year old who have a very difficult time falling asleep and allowing themselves to relax. It is a struggle every night. If I didn't see this for myself, I would have never believed it. Within ten minutes, both of my children were fast asleep. Lori's voice is very relaxing and I can't wait to order another cd.

5 comments about When My Worries Get Too Big! A Relaxation Book for Children Who Live with Anxiety.
  1. This book is an excellent tool for children having diffiulties controlling their emotions. The visual thermometer and the "social story" makes it very helpful to assist these children to learn how to respond to their feelings/emotions more appropriately. My four year old likes to look at his thermometer and read the story every time he has reached a "5". It's been very helpful for him.

  2. I have bought and given several copies of this book. It helps give a language to feelings that might otherwise be hard to describe.

  3. This is a really cute book for kids who worry. It is not real meaty but the concept is great. It helps them put worry into perspective and gives a scale to help prioritize worries.

  4. This is a great book to work with your child. You can personalize it and change it as they grow.
    Barbara V

  5. I used this book with my barely 4 year old (developmentally normal) who has 'anger management' issues that originate with anxiety. There are pages in the book that we were able to write or draw pictures of how he felt. The scale of 1 (calm and safe) to 5 (out of control) was a concept that he grasped right away. He is getting better and better at recognizing when he's getting worried before he gets to a 5. If he does lose control and melts down, just the verbal cue "what number are you at" or asking him to calm down and try to get back to a 1 or 2, and he immediately starts to use his strategies - deep breathing, squeezing hands, thinking happy thoughts. I love this book.

5 comments about When Panic Attacks: The New, Drug-Free Anxiety Therapy That Can Change Your Life.
  1. Very practical method to cope with panic attack. I want to incorporate this method in my current work as crisis worker.

  2. Self-help books are usually very hard to read, I can't seem to get through them. This book is a very easy read. I find myself not wanting to put it down. It has practical examples and easy to interpret instructions that are helping me get control of my thoughts. I would recommend it to anyone with anxiety or panic problems.

  3. Of all the books and therapy that I tried for my growing anxiaty attacks this was the best help: I definetely recommend this book for anybody with this kind of issues; it will give you a truly way to cure your panic drug free!

  4. I found the book to be very helpful. It provided useful tools and skills that one could apply to reducing anxiety. It also gave good history and information about the positives of drug free anxiety therapy. I strongly recommend.

  5. The information and techniques presented in this book changed my life in a profound way. Not only have I become a FAR less anxious individual in general, but I have the tools to combat every type of mood swing imaginable. My self esteem is at heights I could have never imagined. Whether you panic left and right, have mild anxiety, or are simply a human being, I GUARANTEE this book is worth your time. This is the real stuff: researched based and tested over and over again.

Also, while I agree that a lot of this information is the same that has appeared in Burns' older classics "Feeling Good" and the "Feeling Good Handbook" I do find that it is presented in a more organized, easy to digest format that is focused on anxiety instead of depression. Despite containing the same underlying theories, it has expansions, re-organizations, and specifics that I feel easily make it a worthwhile addition to the Burns catalog.

I, obviously, wholeheartedly and passionately recommend this book for ANYONE.

5 comments about Wherever You Go, There You Are: Mindfulness Meditation in Everyday Life.
  1. It's a great book and i am enjoying it. it had a good bit more markings in it than was described, but it's not a big deal.

  2. I love the book, this was my second copy that I wanted to give as gift, however the seller did a very bad job of packing it for shipping, it arrived, but was completely open on one end. It had water and dampness damage, not from the mailing process. I could not give it as a gift. Seller would not contact me.

  3. This is a book to keep in your library for periodic re-reading. I wish I hadn't waited so long this time, to re-read it. Understanding and practicing this "philosophy" can change one's life for the positive.

  4. I read this book after reading Ekhart Tolle's two books and listening to Jon Kabat-Zinn on Oprah's radio program. His ideas parallel Tolle. I devoured the book and recommend it to anyone who wants to grow in mindfulness.

  5. For someone growing up from a Buddhist culture, I feel the author has captured the essence of meditation. Specifically, the author reminds to practice meditation without feeling that you are better than everyone else, which is what I have felt. He also suggests to practice meditation without the goal of becoming a better person, more calm, more relaxed, more focused... etc. These are merely by-products of practicing meditation. So why do we do it? Better read the book to find out!

A reviewer who gave it 1 star says that "the book puts you to sleep." This indeed happened to me a few times when I listened to the audio version of the book while trying to meditate. When I have much stress, this is actually a great way to get sound sleep without any meditation and therefore any side effects. And for this quality alone, I wish I can award the book 6 star.

5 comments about Freeing Your Child from Anxiety: Powerful, Practical Solutions to Overcome Your Child's Fears, Worries, and Phobias.
  1. I really enjoyed this book. It was very user friendly, and showed how to help your child, by giving you the appropriate language to use to explain feelings of anxiety/fear and how to take charge of them.

  2. this book is very informational and organized well. i like that you can just go to the sections you are interested in. they also have very good techniques for the kids (and adults) to try. highly recommended!

  3. This is a great book for parents trying to help an anxious child. It is written in a straightforward way, without a lot of the fluff and extra verbiage that other, similar books include. The author includes realistic-seeming examples and vignettes, but not so many that they overwhelm the content. A very useful resource.

  4. This book has many tangible solutions and specific excercises to try with your child. Very helpful and easy to understand.

  5. This book break down the root of anxiety and provides real life examples on how to help your children work through their aniexty. The book is organized in a way that the information is easy to read.

5 comments about How to Talk to Anyone: 92 Little Tricks for Big Success in Relationships.
  1. If you don't know how to talk to anyone, you still won't know after read this book. There are some tips and little tricks might be helpful, but that's it.

  2. This book is a wonderful collection of social tips. I would recommend it to everyone who seeks greater insight regarding interactions. This book or a similar book should be on everyone's shelf.

  3. For those of you who are looking to improve the quality of your communication and relationships this is one of the books for you. However I'd recommend starting with How To Win Friends and Influence People by: Dale Carnegie. As Lowndes states in the intro of her book, her book isn't a replacement to Carnegie's classic but essentially an expansion. Carnegie goes into the concepts behind Lowndes techniques while Lowndes' book goes into the nitty-gritty specifics of how to accomplish it. Long story short, Carnegie for principles, Lowndes for tools.

  4. This is a great book that will help you put your best foot forward when dealing with people.

  5. How to talk to anyone is written in a straight forward way, giving you tips on how to carry good conversations. It highlights things that, when you think about it, is very very true, especially when you think of people you DONT like speaking with, but dont really see why not.

nice short chapters that lets you pick up a few things every time you pick up the book.

5 comments about The Kissing Hand.
  1. I bought this book because my daughter bought one at her school for "us" when she was very young(separated because of divorce), it was lost in a move and it had sentimental value for both of us...it's not "the one" she bought, but it's just as good and in great condition.

  2. My daughter's kindergarten teacher read this to the kids and the parents the first day of school for orientation. I can tell you not a dry eye with the bunch of us parents! It was so touching that evening as well when my daughter asked me to kiss her hand so she could take it to school with her the first day. This will be an heirloom book for my other child as well as my grandchildren

  3. Like many teachers, I used this book on my first day for my kindergarten class. I would also recommend giving this book as a present to all of the parents that have a child going to kindergarten for the first time.

  4. It's not a bad book, it's just not that interesting to me. And while the kissing hand concept is definitely useful for any child worrying about leaving their parents for the day, I thought it was presented in an excessively sentimental way. I always find too much sentimentality just encourages children to dwell on how upset they are, rather than comforting them.

But if it works for your kid, great.

  5. My sons and I learned about this book while visiting a friend in the midwest. I ordered it as soon as we returned home. It is a heartwarming story. I especially love it and have used the story for saying good bye at preschool and when I have to travel for business. I think it would also be a cute gift for anyone nervous about embarking on a new adventure, young or old. Get it! This book will become one of your favorites.

5 comments about Mind Over Mood: Change How You Feel by Changing the Way You Think.
  1. This book has some really great concepts that used alone I might not be willing or emotionally strong enough to do. My therapist helps to motivate me and to talk about what leads my current status of modd over my mind.

    Recommend.

  2. This book is a wonderful to take charge of the twists and turns of your mind. I have found that through discipline and practice, I have a healthier outlook and less anxiety. This book really breaks things down very simply so I could understand them and apply them to my life. I highly recommend it!

  3. This book was recommended by my phychologist. He couldn't have been more right on. This is the first real help I have had in solving a lot of anxiety and stress in my life. It is so down to earth on what we know but what we so easily overlook in our fix for the human condition. The work pages allow you to really personalize the advice. I would buy it again and I would recommend to all who want to improve their life.

  4. Thank you for getting the several copies of Mind Over Mood to me. They were new, as described. Thanks you!

  5. This is a great read, especially for anyone who's dealt with depression. I've gone through it myself, and this book helped me a lot!
