  1. This is an inspirational story that is extremely well written. It is a prime example of how God does for us what we cannot do for ourselves. Those who are especially drawn to the Blessed Mother will identify and relate to Matt's story. He dedicated his life to her once he found sobriety. Matt Talbot's life is a story of the power of prayer. His mother prayed for him fervently while he was in the midst of his alcoholic disease. One day he comes home directly from his place of work and tells his mother he is going to take "the pledge" - a sworn oath not to drink for a specified period of time in the company of a priest. (Matt's life preceded the program of Alcoholic's Anonymous) Matt was a daily drinker - a daily drunk. His mother had not seen him come home early or sober since he was in his teens. He struggled daily but by turning his will and life over to the care of God he never took a drink again. This is a story of a man who found long lasting sobriety in a life of dedication to God through His son Jesus Christ and the intercession of the Blessed Mother who once pawned his shoes in the middle of a harsh Irish winter for a drink. A beautiful story of the life of a venerable member of the Catholic Church.

  1. Its just a cute whimsical boo

  2. This book is an absolutely delightful and sensitive story about a cat who becomes addicted to drinking (including bathtub water and, at its depths, toilet water). The pictures are incredibly cute, but the message is certainly conveyed that substance abuse not only harms the abuser but also others; however, help can certainly be found.

  3. for anyone who is or has known an alcoholic, this is the simplest, yet most profoundly honest portrayal of the disease. it is a sensitive, bittersweet eye-opener. it will illuminate you.

  4. A Very Special Book. Too bad there's not currently a photo on Amazon! This is a picture tale about a cat with twenty captioned black and white photos that relate the story of a kitten. The story reflects the behavior and feelings of many alcoholics. The photos are warm, and sometimes a little sad (but not depressing), as the cat finds himself in rough places (when he is drinking too much) - But on the last photo, you see him go into an AA meeting door and it's warm and wonderful. Especially with that last photo, this book can make you smile and give you chills at the same time. A spectacular little gift to anyone in The Program that tells a great tale without being preachy. It would be suitable for children, but the deeper message makes it great for teens and adults also. A great gift for a sobriety anniversary!

  5. A perfect gift for potential "Friends of Bill W." Newcomers and Oldtimers already in recovery will also appreciate this allegory on the subject of problem drinking. The message is clear, yet tastefully delivered with an abundance of feline images.

  1. This was really a beautiful book about a Jesuit priest (Father Jim) getting sober. I think anyone in recovery, regardless of their religious beliefs, would be touched by it. I had so much gratitude after reading it!

  2. My daughter gave Anonymous Disciple to me as a gift on my 12th sober birthday. Never in my life have I read a book that has had such a tremendous personal impact. This is much more than a book on recovery; it's a journey of one man's life, which was willing to be used for the benefit of others. This book will definitely create personal introspection, and cause the reader to think, "What is my commission, and how can I be used to help others?"

  3. I have been in recovery for many years, and have always thought that sober alcoholics (and drug addicts) have much to offer. This book, "Anonymous Disciple," is a triumph of the human spirit. There is hope for even those who are near death with their disease (addiction). The book renews my faith in God and in humanity.

  4. Excellent book, and though it stands alone, it may be best to read after reading "Father Fred and the Twelve Steps: A Primer for Recovery" since Father Jim followed fellow Jesuit Father Fred through the doors of AA recovery.

I found this book difficult to put down, as it started by introducing some "unknown" speaker at an AA meeting (Fr Jim) through the eyes of a "newbie" third party, and and then immediately took the reader back many years to a desperate Fr Jim in a near-hopeless situation. The book takes us through his struggle in recovery, Fr Jim's work among the "disposables" (institutionalized alcoholics and addicts) and how together they became healthy, both in mind and spirit. A really inspirational true tale.

You will not regret reading this book.

  5. The Anonymous Disciple is for anyone struggling with an addiction of if they have a family member who is addicted. My brother has ALS and has been in AA for many many years. I taped this book for him including my laughter and my tears. He loved it and his care giver loved it. I want to thank the author for writing such a moving story of MAN.

5 comments about The Next Better Place: A Memoir in Miles.
  1. I ENJOYED THIS BOOK VERY MUCH,HOWEVER I'M A LITTLE CONFUSED ABOUT MR. KEITH'S DATES. HE SAYS THESE EVENTS TOOK PLACE IN 1959, WHEN HE WAS 11 YEARS OLD. HOWEVER ON THE "AUTHORS NOTE" PAGE IT GIVES HIS YEAR OF BIRTH AS 1945, WHICH WOULD HAVE MADE HIM 14 YEARS OLD AT THE TIME OF THESE EVENTS. ALSO HE MENTIONS SEVERAL TIMES THE SONG FROM THE MOVIE "THE MAGNIFICANT 7". HOWEVER THAT MOVIE WASNT RELEASED TILL THE EARLY 1960'S. NO BIG DEAL. JUST BAD PROOF READING BY THE PUBLISHERS.

  2. Smiling ghosts of Mark Twain and Jack Kerouac hover over many pages of Michael Keith's "The Next Better Place." This captivating book places Keith squarely in the same row with America's finest writers of the road adventure story. Which is to say that "The Next Better Place" is so much more than a memoir-cum-novel of a precocious son traversing America's great expanses with an ageing picaro of a father. Keith knows when to embroider his book's perfectly intoned dialogue, tremulous details, and charming teenage bravado with both lyrical pathos and hints at the perverse. The greatest American road novel, Vladimir Nabokov's "Lolita," also came to mind as I devoured Keith's book, and I can only hope that Keith will soon reward his readers with another one.

  3. I would normally give this book 5 stars, except I have a strong sense that this book is a fictional fraud.

It's the story of an 11 year old boy who hitchikes the country with his alcoholic, dead-beat father in search of a better life in California. Of course, California is no better than any other place they've been and they take buses back to Albany where his mother lives with his two sisters, only to ***spoiler*** go back out on the road again with his father at the end of the book.

The book is well written and engaging, but only if the book is true, which I doubt. The book often states what a good storyteller the father is and how good said father is at making up things to get what he wants out of people. The author continually expresses his desire to be on the radio or in movies, not to mention how often he embellishes stories, so I wouldn't be surprised if the book was just one big lie.

From the outset, the author states how he went 2 entire months without a bowel movement, which I don't even know is medically possible, much less didn't land him in the hospital. Plus he recounts in great detail names, places, and events that happened 40 years ago. And somehow, all these events involve sexual predators, thieves, and other ne'er-do-well's. Never any average people. Nah, I don't think the book is true.

But if it is true, it's really well done.

  4. This wonderful hitchhiking odyssey is all thumps up (or outstretched as the young boy would tell us). What a romp across 1960 America. It's the kind of book I'd love to see as a movie. Sure lends itself to the big screen because I have read few more visual stories. This is fun all the way to California and back! What a roll of the camera . . . and sentence.

  5. This is a wonderful book. "A road trip with an alcoholic father and a child? Must be a downer," you'd think. Not so. Never sliding into self-pity, the author just lays out a personal cross-country saga in mesmerizing detail. At times heartbreaking, this book is ultimately an inspirational story of survival by a child who deserved better. I've read a lot of travel narratives, and this is as good as they come.
