3 comments about Shattered Innocence: A Practical Guide For Counselling Women Survivors Of Childhood Sexual Abuse.
  1. The book is thoughtful and sensitive, and at the same time thorough and informational. I personally went through recovery for childhood sexual abuse and feel that the process is clearly and efffectively outlined. It was most interesting to read the comparison to the Stephen King novel. And some of the imagery in the book is so vivid and poignant. The little girl on the swing...what an image.

  2. As a surviver of childhood abuse, i found this book to be very helpful and insightful. Recovery from such horrendous acts is very painful. Mr. Weiner provides excellent methods to continue with recovery and in a less painful yet productive means. I will forever be greatful to him for his insight and assistance to those of us with backgorounds of this nature. His understanding of MPD/DID was most touching. Thank you Mr. Weiner!

  3. My wife is a psychologist and I took this book from her to read. As a lay person, I now have a deeper understanding of this topic. It was accesible and informational and academic and intelligent at the same time. The ties to history and pop culture make the book timeless and relevant.

2 comments about 101 Freedom Exercises: A Christian Guide for Sex Addiction Recovery.
  1. Dr. Weiss does an excellent job presenting practical exercises to help the recovery process of the Sex Addict. His writing is simple at a high school or below level reading level, but the concepts and power of the exercises don't lose their effectiveness even for scholarly readers.

Although this is a "Christian Guide," Dr. Weiss does not taut theology and takes a very gentle approach to spiritual concepts, many times assuming the reader has no or little spiritual background.

This is one of the most powerful tools I've found in working with addicts to recover. Highly recommended.

  2. Our church has used this book for several years as part of our Steps to Freedom support group. This group provides men accountability, practical tips and principles for becoming truly free from from struggles with pornography, adultery, emotional disconnection or sexual withholding. We use this book paired with Steps to Freedom, also by Weiss. This is for men who really want to break free of these struggles through God's grace.

  1. On My Own Terms is a very powerful book! The author had me identifying with her. I was often in tears when I was reading this book. It addresses so many issues that deserve further thought. I truly recommend this book to anyone, as the author sheds a great deal of insight as to how a person is affected by abusive parents. This book left me with a feeling that we can all overcome obstacles, no matter what a person has endured. Darlene Barriere's book is truly inspirational.

  2. This is a compelling story of a woman's life and her struggle with various kinds of adversity. I loved that instead of focussing on the pain and the horror of the events in her life, D. Barriere used them to speak about her personal growth and the triumph of her human spirit after much struggle. She was successful in making me think, making me sad, making me joyful for her successes and a book that is able to draw those emotions from me is a rare and treasured thing.

1 comments about Telling Incest: Narratives of Dangerous Remembering from Stein to Sapphire.
  1. This book is a very interesting analysis of a wide range of the most popular books on father-daughter incest (including stepfathers and a mother's live-in boyfriend). The chapters are broken into categories: Ordinary Doings, African-American, Feminist, Canonical, The Science of Memory (false memory stories), Incest Survivor Memoirs, and On the Borders of Real. I found the book to be a fascinating exploration.

5 comments about The Feeling Soul: A Roadmap to Healing and Living.
  1. Mark's writings teach people that we can really learn how to live free from past pain and to create new possibilities. The Feeling Soul helps the world to know that it can be done and how to do it!

  2. Mark is a wonderful story teller and teacher of life. I learned a lot about psychology and proper and inproper ways of dealing with pain and trauma from this book.

Thank you for shedding some insights to my own psychy. Everyone should get this book, my friend Rafal certained loved it.

  3. This unique book is a compassionate, penetrating, practical resource for both the layperson and therapeutic community. It is a thinking and a doing book, demonstrating that a new life can be learned. It integrates thinking, feeling and new behaviors and illustrates the dynamic relationships between all three in a comprehensive model of personal development and who we are as person. The book flows well, but does not need to be read sequentially..

    The book is divided into 5 major sections;
Learning; discovering what emotions are, attitude development, connections, self responsibility, support systems, emotional role models, emotional maturity, the role of stress, and a broad spectrum of innovative healing techniques.
Insight; understanding our past and culture and why we are hurting, depression, masks, loss, rejection, shame, jealousy, guilt, boundaries, abuse and memories.
Growth; challenging our beliefs and past emotional and mental patterns, triggers, self talk, belief changes, personal purpose.
Healing; letting go and releasing emotions and beliefs, awareness techniques, base-lining, breathing techniques, anger, dependency, productive grieving, forgiveness, catharsis, visualization and various other religious and cultural healing practices.
Teaching; forgiving, empathy, gratitude, healthy living, balanced life, positive expectation.

The book includes an extensive bibliography and further resources at www.healingresources.org. An ancient Chinese proverb says "Tell me and I will forget, show me and I may remember, involve me and I will understand". Mark O'Meara's new book does all of this and more, a unique contribution.

  4. Building and maintaining healthy relationships is part of the human experience, but building bridges that lead to spiritual and emotional wellness is an awakening. The Feeling Soul is a powerful book that helps you remove the barriers to being present, here and now.

    I wholeheartedly recommend this book!

2 comments about Surviving the Secret.
  1. For anyone who has sought help as a Christian with sexual abuse issues, this is a must read. The authors clearly define and explain sexual abuse issues as well as give scriptural references to explain God's role in our healing process. This book came at a time when I truly needed to hear how to accept, heal and forgive the abuses done to me as a child. This book will bring you closer to God and healing in the process.

  2. For years I kept my secret. So many years that the pain of it was overwhelming. When I met a man that I believe to be my future husband, I realized that I could not move forward until I sought help to heal the wounds of my past and the terrible secret that was eating me alive. I go to church with Pam Vredevelt and knew that I could trust this book. It changed my life! I no longer feel like a silent victim. I no longer feel like that confused scared little girl, now, now by God's grace, I am a survivor!
