1 comments about Stochastic Finance: An Introduction In Discrete Time 2 (De Gruyter Studies in Mathematics).
- It is well-known that the mathematical study of finance has, over the last two decades, led to a number of discoveries in stochastic analysis whose import extends beyond the boundaries of finance to other areas of mathematics. There are, currently, many good text-books which treat the mathematics of financial markets (e.g. Pliska, Bingham&Kiesel, Elliott&Kopp, Musiela&Rutkowski, Karatzas&Shreve, roughly in increasing order of difficulty. Pliska's text works only in the discrete-time framework, whereas the others move quickly to continuous-time). The text by Follmer and Schied deals only with the discrete-time case, but covers a large amount of material which you won't find in any of the other books: A thorough introduction to utility theory, excellent coverage of coherent and convex risk measures, and various approaches to hedging in incomplete markets. Each chapter quickly brings the reader close to the frontiers of research. Future research in these areas also promises to overflow the boundaries, providing new applications to other branches of functional analysis.
A word of caution: Though the text restricts itself to the "simpler" discrete-time case, thus avoiding stochastic integration, it nevertheless demands a solid background in analysis, including graduate level probability theory and functional analysis. Though not technically a requirement, some background in mathematical finance is necessary in order to understand what this book is about. In conclusion, therefore, don't make this your first book on mathematical finance -- get Bingham&Kiesel instead. But if you have the mathematical background, and are analytically inclined, do buy it. This book is a phenomenal achievement.

- this book does not cover any new material learned in even a BAD high school trigonometry course and ninth grade algebra other than polar cooridinates and parametric equations. do not use this above the high school level. there is ALOT of stuff you already know. don't use this book even for a review unless you dont know ninth grade math. the topics of functions are so obvious, yet he covers them over about 7 chapters.
- I have taught from this text for 3 years now. It is excellent. My students like the text and find the explanations helpful. I would recommend this text to any teacher who is hunting for a good preparation for calculus.
- I was primarily disappointed with the lack of rigor. But it has more pretty pictures than math textbooks I remember from high school, in case you need that sort of thing to keep your (or your students') interest. I would rather have paid less for a black-and-white text that doesn't hurt your arms to hold up to read (the dimensions of the book also make that awkward). There are nice little blurbs about various relevant/famous mathemeticians. The book strives to give a lot of real-world examples, and for that I give it 3 stars instead of 2. If you are looking for a book with that kind of emphasis, you may find this to be just what you want. I have to agree with an earlier reviewer that my highschool trig and precalc course were much more detailed and had more depth.
PS: I am still searching for an errata sheet.

- This book may be expensive but is really helpful, not only in class but also as a reference or as a study guide. The language used in this book is simple and the graphics and images easy to understand. For me trigonometry was always a pain and I got an A in the class, so I decided to write a review for future students.
- This book was confusing. I found descrepancies. It really frustrated me. If you are an online student, good luck with this book. You will definately need tutoring.
- This book clearly states that it is "College Algebra with Trigonometry" the book I received was the student manual to "College Algebra with Trigonometry". So I have the answers to the problems that will be assigned to me... just not the problems themselves. My opinion would be to not order from this web-site.
- I was looking to buy "College Algebra with Trig", but i recieved the "Student Solutions manual instead. Nowhere on this page does it say it is just the answers to the book. Beware - don't spend 60 dollars if this is not what you're looking for. Now i have to try and get my money back.

- This book is useful neither for review nor for learning from scratch. It seems to me that the only student who would benefit from this book is someone who knows precalculus so well already that he/she wouldn't need it. There are several other precalculus guides costing just a few dollars more that are much more helpful, and are of better quality to boot. (Some pages in this book just look downright amateurish, designwise). Do yourself a favor and skip this one; it's money wasted. I'm using my copy as a doorstop.
- To think, some tree had to die to whisper this wonderful piece of crap into existence! This book doesn't explain anything! I picked this little thing up as a precursor to a more advanced text. This is usually my style. A nice little hors d'oeuvre, something simple, something easy with which to familiarize myself with the topic at hand. The book was cheap, and it was a Schaum's, right? What could be easier? Well, it wasn't easy, it was just useless. Don't spend your hard earned money on this little tidbit of ordure. Not even $.69.
