5 comments about Precalculus (7th Edition).
- I taught 2 sections of precalculus with this book last spring. This book is well designed for self study. Examples are keyed to specific exercises so the student is directed to use a concept immediately after seeing it employed in a suitable exercise.
My one quibble with the book is the way trigonometry is introduced. It seems to be needlessly convoluted so if you are thinking of adopting it you should read the first two or three sections covering trig. I chose to supplement it with my own notes.
I would recommend this book for anyone who wants to supplement a high school precalculus course with a book that is stronger on theory vs. graphing calculator techniques. There are some very inadequate precalculus texts out there. If you are serious about mathematics and your school is using an approach that employs graphing calculators in a heavy way, you may want to use this book. In that case consider an older (cheaper) edition.
Update: Another reviewer comments that the 7th ed and the 6th ed may be significantly different. Well, they are not.
- why are the reviews for the 6th and 7th edition of this book the same? is there no difference between editions, such that reviews for the 6th should be kept for the 6th. the 7th edition might have changes that could cause some to review/change a viewpoint about its content. maybe at the core they are the same book/method, but it is overall a different book and the reviews should be kept edition specific.
it is my opinion that amazon will not post this as it obviously not a review, but it my contention that the 8 posted are not reviews of this edition, either. why are they posted?
- At the beginning I was a bit worried about the way the book explains the material. It seemed too simple for a book dealing with more complex subjects in math such as functions, trigonometry and analytic geometry. Then again it could be said that this quality is the one that makes the book such a joy to read.
Not a single time did I felt lost or confused by the presentation. Most of the graphics and photos do supplement the explanation, and help the reader grasp the information better. One of the highlights, one that perhaps most people will miss, is the simple review questions at the beginning of each section. These little snippets of previous material force the reader to review those concepts that will be essential for further understanding.
Every new section in the book is short and clear; thus reducing the amount of explanation, but at the same time maintaining just enough so that the reader will not feel lost in the many formulas and derivations. If this book does not get "5 starts" from my review it is only because it could be more mathematically rigorous by presenting more proofs. But by not doing so it increases the clarity and easy presentation the book possesses - great book well worth the price.
- Precalculus (8th Edition) is a great textbook. A little on the heavy side (as in the weight of the book, need a wheel barrel to get it around).
- This is my first time purchasing anything on Amazon.com. I was a bit skeptical and uncertain. I wondered if the book I ordered would arrive and if so, in what condition.
I was pleasantly surprised when I received the package in the mail. When I opened it, I was alarmed that the book was in such good condition and everything that was mentioned about it was true.
I purchased a few other books which arrived in the time specified that it would arrive and in the condition that was stated in the ad.
I have no fear using this site to purchase other materials.

- It provides wide range of practical applications, with plain English, colorful pages, step by step from basic to advanced approach. It has got answers at the back. I recommend it`s Instructor`s solutions manual as well...
- one of the best trig books in the world. the same goes for algebra and trig (right triangle)by beecher and bittinger:1993 edition.
- The strength of this book is its organization. The reader is first introduced to the relation of arc length, radius, and angle. Then degrees and radians are learned. Then the unit circle is introduced. This is one of the best ways to learn trig.
The textbook presents the theory in a clear way that is easy to follow. If you were to read the chapter, you know enough to answer any of the problems. And if you were decided between texts, the layout of the problems of this text would be the reason to choose it. That is because of the science and real world applications of the problems. This is not "plug and chug." It is applying what was learned.
For me this book and the class in which it was used formed the foundation of all my latter math courses. This book has some pre-calculus problems, but that isn't its focus. Calculus has its advantages, but I always found trig to be more visual than most things in calculus. It is easier to picture what is actually going on in the math problem. But if you can relate your newly learned problem solving skills when approaching calculus problems, you will have no trouble.
One of my favorite problems in this book, which was included in the sixth edition on page 281, problem 71, is about an arched doorway. I don't know if the current versions have this problem. However it is worth researching. On my website (see my profile), I discuss this problem. And the excellent problems is what make this the best trig book I've seen.

5 comments about Trigonometry: A Unit Circle Approach (8th Edition).
- The explanations in this book could be more concise for students who have other assignments to study and fulfill. Throughout all my years in reading mathematical textbooks, this one does not head straight-to-the-point. The author spends more time introducing the subject than explaining how one step is derived from another in the examples, which leaves the student to spend time figuring how one concept abruptly transitions into the next. Aside from that, the exercise questions sometimes do not relate to the examples given in the book.
- The textbook does not have central focus and all the formulas are not explained properly. The explanations are overbroad and vague and do not focus on the most important stuff. I would not recommend this textbook to any student. The two stars I give is for the nice paper it is printed on.
- This book is so bad. I have to use it for my Trig class, and it is very unclear, your lucky if you get an example in the book, and its just horrible. Formuals and concepts are BARELY explained. I hate this book. It makes you totally depend on your teacher for help, becasue this won't do you any good.
- This is the worst math book I have EVER used. Awful awful. When I needed help, did I turn to my outrageously priced trig book? Nope! Google was of more help than this book.
So, what is wrong with it?
No background. I hadn't been in school for 7 years. I was a bit rusty and this book was of no help. It has really bad examples (if you are lucky enough to get an example for the type of problem you are working) that skip steps and don't give any explanation of the concepts.
The my mathlab that comes with this book is great. It really supplements where the book fails.
- This book is one of the most unclear concepts i have ever tried to learn. The examples are really tough and sadly have nothing to do with the exercises themselves which made my self learning very long, boring, and pretty much a waste of time. I understand the graphing, but i dont understand why they add calculus problems to it like the difference qutient. But on the plus side, the cover and the pages are really nice and good looking. But the examples themselves are long and a waste of paper, no offense. I wouldn't really recomend this book for self teaching, but u can use it maybe if u have a tutor which i dont have. Good luck shopping for a trig book! :P

- I bought this book as a backup for the one we use in school. The book itself is good with explaining most concepts, but not always clear. Overall, I would suggest this book.

- Unfortunately, this book was a teachers edition, so my daughter's teacher was not too thrilled to see her have it in class! So much for saving a few dollars - I still had to go out and pay full price for the student edition. To the sellers, this was an important piece of information that should have been more apparent in the description.
- This is an impressive presentation of algebra & trig. It has a wealth of well designed visual aids and clear worked examples. Is it worth the list price of $144? No! There are scanty few textbooks that I would deem worthy of such outrageous prices. But, since this one can be obtained used for a reasonable price, I'd give it a thumbs up with no reservations.
BTW - the previous reviewer's one star rating only reflects the publisher's (or Amazon's) failure to provide adequate details of the nature of book. That really has nothing to do with conveying the quality of the textbook's presentation of the material.
- As a math tutor, I am familiar with many books. I really like this book because it explains everything I would want the student to know. It illustrates all the common pitfalls very clearly.
***** 5 stars for presentation (layout, typesetting, use of color, organization).
***** 5 stars for content (the authors seem to be very in touch with what explanations work for students both in the short term, and what explanations are best for them in the long term.)
***** 5 stars for the exercises. There are a lot of exercises in each section (usually around 100?). They cover the basics all the way up to what they call the 'sythesis' problems, where the student can challenge themselves to do advanced problems. I really like the synthesis problems because they are do-able and can make the student start to feel confident.

- I used this textbook with a high school independent study course that I took through a university. This book taught me more about mathematics than any previous book I have studied.
As I said, I used this book with an independent study program, but it was absolutely no problem learning the material. This book teaches you trigonometry in an easy-to-understand and thorough way. I didn't have a teacher, and I didn't need one with this book.
This book is excellent for learning trigonometry, and a great preparation for calculus. If you want to learn trig, buy this book!
