5 comments about Mental Math for Pilots (Professional Aviation series).
- This book is very good for pilots who need to refresh on their basics
- For its price, I found this little booklet not helpful. The first 5 pages are essentially advertising for a consulting firm (the author's employer) that prepares pilots for airline interviews. The final 5 pages again are mostly advertising for that same company's products. A 14-page appendix contains a review of how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide (at the level of teaching you that 3 + 4 = 7). Another 10-page appendix contains addition, subtraction, multiplication and division tables. In the remainder of the book (55 - very small - pages), I found exactly one useful rule: how to meet a crossing restriction. There are one or two other rules that in years of corporate flying I have never found useful (such as how to calculate your hydroplaning speed - interesting in concept, but practically not very useful).
If your math is below high school level, this book may be useful to you. Otherwise, I wouldn't recommend this book.
If you are planning to prepare for an interview, I would recommend you save the money you would have spent on this book and buy "Everything explained for the professional pilot" instead; and if you are interviewing for a job in a turbine-powered aircraft, "The turbine pilot's flight manual" - both those books are MUCH more helpful.
- OK reference book. For pro pilots it's a good review but probably nothing you didn't know at one time. It's not a big book either, you could read it in an hour or two. And their is too much basic 2nd/3rd grade math: How to add, subtract, multiply, etc. that was unnecessary. But if you forgot how to figure a descent rate, VDP, TAS or ground speed, than it's a good review.
- This book is too short for too much money.
"Pilot's rules of thumb" has all of the same information AND MORE for LESS money.
Pilot's rules of thumb: Rules of thumb, easy aviation math, handy formulas, quick tips
The typeface is very large making the "book" a pamphlet - a very expensive pamphlet.
I have been flying jets at the airlines for over 10 years now and there are really only a handful of basic formulas you need and spending the time to go through the entire book would be a waste of your interview preparation time...even though you could thoroughly go through the entire book, cover-to-cover, in an aftenoon.
- This book can be pretty useful with lost of tips and well summarized formulas with explanations and different ways of calculating and dealing with a variety of prblems a pilot faces on his everyday operations, I strongly recommend it

2 comments about Making Mathematics with Needlework: Ten Papers and Ten Projects.
- Knowledgeably compiled and deftly co-edited by Sarah-Marie Belcastro (Co-Director, Hamshire College Summer Studies in mathematics and Visiting Assistant Professor of Mathematics at Smith College) and Carolyn Yackel (Mathematics Instructor, Mercer University), "Making Mathematics With Needlework: Ten Papers And Ten Projects" is unique in that it combines mathematics papers with fiber arts project instructions. Each chapter showcases a particular project and that project features sections on mathematics and mathematics education along with detailed instructions for completing the needlecraft project. The featured projects include a Quilted Mobius Band (making a mobius quilt); Diphantine Equations (making a bi-directional hat); Sierpinski Variatins (making a Sierpinski shawl); a Two Knit Stiches Tours; Symmetry Patterns in Cross-Stitch; Algebraic Structure (making algebraic socks); Fortunatus's Purse; (K)Not Cables and Braids (making a pillow of Braid Equivalence); The Graph Theory of Blackwork Embroidery (embroidering a Holbeinian Graph); and making Hyperbolic Pants. Profusely illustrated, the text is fully accessible to non-specialist general readers with an interest in needlecraft, in the mathematics underlying needlecraft, as well as having a very special attraction for math students and fiber art enthusiasts alike.
- Ok, I'm a bit of a math geek -- I have my masters in math. And I'm addicted to knitting books and yarn (as a quick perusal of my review history will demonstrate). So I ordered this book. Each chapter presents a new concept and a new project. The projects are not your typical fiber arts projects but they are all beautiful. They also should give even the most math-phobic individuals a new appreciation of the math.
I have taught math online to adult college students and this would be perfect "supplemental reading" to show people that math doesn't have to be scary.

2 comments about Algebra Out Loud: Learning Mathematics Through Reading and Writing Activities.
- I am a student working on my bachelor's to teach high school math. I bought this book as a resource for my reading class. It is so awesome I even included it in my term paper. It has examples of all the things and more that we were taught in that class. This book changed my attitude toward teaching reading and writing strategies in a high school math class. These techniques help struggling readers while at the same time they enhance more successful learners. This is also a must have book for middle school math teachers.
- How refreshing! I ordered this book at least a year ago, and it sat on my shelf until a few days ago. Big mistake on my part-I could've used most of the activities sooner! I normally read through this type of resouce and flag the handful of pages deemed useful for improving classrom instruction. Immediately, I found myself flagging almost every other page. This book is LOADED with meaningful and easy to implement ideas to assist in improving literacy, vocabulary and communication in secondary mathematics classrooms. Even though mathematics is the subject of focus, I would HIGHLY rec. this to any teacher as the activities could be easily adapted based upon grade level and/or subject.

5 comments about CliffsTestPrep CSET: Mathematics (Cliffstestprep).
- This book does not cover enough complex material that was on the test. It was useless in preparation and did not help at all. I'd recommend another book because this only covers basics, not the complex stuff on the exam.
- I found mistakes, even simple mistakes like graphing coordinates (2,3) as (3,2) and then continuing to compute incorrectly. This book is not comprehensive, it only explains 3 areas of the test that the author feels is "particularly difficult." These 3 areas are the only things worth reading in the book. The rest of the book is a practice test and solutions. They provide one sample question for every type of question, so if you are planning on practicing its not happening because you only get 1 or 2 (max) chances for every type of question that may show up.
The best part of it was the fact that one construction problem showed up on my cset, exactly as it appeared in this book. I got a perfect on it. Overall its not a bad resource to use. It will help, but compared to free resources such as the cset ca subject examiners free practice sheet (the best resource) and math textbooks (free at libraries or if you kept your college books), its a waste of money.
- So the 2004 practice version of this test on the cset site was WAY closer than what this book was testing on. It's not that good of a book in my opinion.
- The CSET Mathematics is not the type of test you take lightly. To prepare for the test, taking review classes is very helpful. I would recommend this book simply for the practice tests. The tests are helpful in terms of getting used to the type of problems that will be on the CSET. Remember it is not meant to teach you the materials, rather to review the type of material you will be tested on.
- The CSET Mathematics Cliffs TestPrep did not prepare me well enough to past the Math 1 or Math 2 that I took, nor did the REA CSET Mathematics. Though I think if you were to buy just one of the two books spend your money on the REA (Research an Education Association) book. The Cliff book just does not cover all the subject areas with enough information to prepare one for the test. I recommend buying the book anyways but also use the downloadable test from CSET so that you end up with three test prep documents. Then buy and use as your main books to study are the Schaum's outlines on the various mathematics tests. Each Math test covers at least three different types of courses in mathematics some four or more. For example, for Math I spend more studying with the Schaum's Outlines on College Algebra (first year college level), Linear Algebra (college junior level after you have Calc 1 & 2 completed), and if they have it Number Theory (college junior level) or for this book buy a used college text book on the subject.
As an electrical engineer that has been out of school for a long time you need to broaden your math skills as well as remember the ones you took.

5 comments about Math 3: An Incremental Development : Student Workbook (Saxon Math Grade 3).
- This math curriculum is wonderful, but the description here is not very helpful. It is called the "Math 3 Home Study Kit -- Teacher's Edition. The Home Study Kit includes the student workbooks and the teacher's manual. However, if you order this item, you will receive the Home Study Teacher's Edition (teacher's manual) only. This is not a kit -- but it is a great way to teach math to your third grader.
- You will need more than just book. You will also want the workbooks and other parts of the kit. This is just the Teacher's Edition.
Having said that, Saxon Math program is very good.
It does not work straight through covering one topic until it is completed and then introducing the next. In other words it does not teach all of the addition facts and then how to carry and then introduce subtraction etc. It works in a repetitive manner.
This means your child will continually going back to review what has been already covered. There are short verbal and written assessments to ensure that your child continues to maintain what has been learned. One negative is that if you do find your child misses a section there are no directions on what lessons to redo.
It does expect you to memorize math facts. There are many reasons to memorize math facts but there is very little explanation about why you might want to do this in the book. The facts are presented in a logical formation and they also provide help in learning to solve math facts; such as the doubles plus one rule.
For a homeschooler this is a great book. It provides a logical method of teaching math.
- Excellent gradients for students with lots of practice and drilling. Easy to teach without having to step out of this curriculum to help the students understand.
- I think this manual is great for parents that homeschool. because it is totally scripted it takes all the guess work out of teaching your child.
- Saxon has a great way for kids to learn and practice math. They review, and include all areas for daily practice instead of just a single subject per page(such as addition). This allows the child to keep each process in mind until it is learned and then becomes a review.

2 comments about First Steps for Math Olympians: Using the American Mathematics Competitions (Problem Books) (MAA Problem Book Series).
- It's a great book, covering everything needed for the higher level AMC competitions.
- I read this book just two weeks before the American Mathematics Contests this year as a freshman. I had never heard of these contests, but reading this book gave me everything I need to know! With its help, I qualified for the AIME (though missed the USA math olympiad by 1 question!). If you are into math contests, trust me, this will significantly raise your score.

3 comments about 15 Realistic Tests for the SAT Math Level 2: With Solutions.
- I teach high school math and tutor on the side. I picked up this book because of the number of practice test. My student and I are on test #4 now. I find the questions adequately difficult. The solution is not always clear. This is a good product if you have a decent teacher to guide you through the problems you don't understand, but not for you to teach yourself.
- This book is very good to use for the SAT Subject Test.
It may be harder than the College Board's Test but that help you get more prepared for the test. If you can finish a good part of this book and in the correct time, you should have a better chance on the actual exam.
- I don't know why this book's title calls the tests "Realistic." A quick look at the questions reveals what the preface states clearly: these questions are much harder than questions on the real Math Level 2 test. Although the math level is the same, this book's problems require more steps and more insight. Even if you know the math this book's problems will make you think. Do not buy this book if all you want is some sample tests.
On the other hand, if you want to practice, if you are willing to spend time to learn the math better by working problems, or if, like me, you just enjoy flexing your math muscles, then do buy the book. If you do the problems, your Math Level II score will improve. Don't buy the book for a quick fix, because it won't be quick. Do buy the book if you're willing to work on your math.
