1 comments about Solutions Manual for Wackerly, Mendenhall, and Scheaffer's Mathematical Statistics with Applications.
- I found this manual to be necessary for understanding every type of problem that appear in Math Stat w/ Applications (6th ed.) Many of the even problems are different than the odd ones - to fully understand how to work out those problems you will need this manual.

1 comments about Used Math for the First Two Years of College Science.
- I have regularly used this handy paper back math book since I was a college engineering student in 1977. I have found it to be the most useful of all of the math books that I own. It is very useful for engineers, because it has very clear and useful sections on units and dimensions, and error analysis, which are not always taught so clearly in college. It has numerous useful diagrams and concise explanations to jog your memory on basic engineering mathematics such as algebraic functions, matrices, sinusoidal functions, exponential functions, gaussian distributions, analyticial geometry, and complex numbers. It also has very concise and clear sections on both differential and intergral calculus for us engineers who don't use them all the time and need a refresher. I have worn out my copy of the book and have decided that I need to buy a new copy.

5 comments about Kaplan GRE & GMAT Exams Math Workbook: Fourth Edition (Kaplan Gmat Math Workbook).
- I took the GRE and got a 710 on the math section (70th percentile). I did about 5 practice problems from each section of the book over a 3 day period, taking notes on the shortcuts provided by the book. The book has good tips that you need on the exam to complete it in time.
I took the GMAT today and scored a 58th(39 scaled) percentile on the math, which would be a 41 had I answered all the questions. I reviewed what I studied for the GRE for 3 hours. I really only attempted 30 of 37, so I suppose this score is okay. Honestly, had I studied for 3 days as I did for the GRE, this score would probably be 80th percentile. My verbal was 93rd percentile and it was way easier than the GRE (56 percentile), unless you are a dictionary whiz. This tests your ability to pick the least incorrect sentence from a selection of poor sentences, and skim passages for information. So much for these tests predicting ability!
Anyhow, buy the book, study the tips, and practice before taking. And remember that you don't need stellar scores to get into a good program, but it helps. And if you don't apply, you'll never know if you could have gotten in....
- This book provides a solid preparation for all the concepts tested on the GRE quantitative section either if you don't know them or just want to recall them.
I used the book for 3 weeks and my score improved from a 710 (on my previous GRE official test) to a 790 (in the latest test). The only thing that will need worknig out is timing. The book can't actually help you in that part, and that is your ultimate enemy once the concepts are mastered. The book lacks a cd with some CAT timed test in order to give the full preparation for the real GRE test.
- With no review and almost 20 years since I last looked at algebra and geometry I got 360 on the GRE math section. With 4 weeks of review using this book I got 570! Imagine what you could do with longer! I highly recommend this workbook. Its easy to follow, the methods are very clear and detailed. It teaches you a few tricks of the trade that are simple and effective. Well worth the money.
- I made the mistake of thinking that "GRE Math" meant "GRE Math Subject test" which it DOESN'T. This book is for the math section of the general GRE and NOT for the GRE math subject test.
- I hadn't taken a math course since my freshman year of college and never being strong in math, even when I was doing these concepts in high school, I think this workbook helped me out a lot. When I first started doing GRE practice tests, I was making around 480 on the quantitative (math) section, but after studying with the Kaplan workbook, my Princeton Review general GRE book, and the GRE 10th Edition, I ended up scoring almost a 600 on my math portion.

1 comments about Math Made Visual: Creating Images for Understanding Mathematics (Classroom Resource Material).
- Often, the best way to teach a proof is by drawing an image that illustrates the ideas. While mathematics is based on abstract concepts, humans are creatures whose intuition is largely based on images. This book describes many ways in which concepts can be visually represented and these images truly are worth a thousand symbols. Part I consists of twenty chapters, which are called:
*) Representing numbers by graphical elements
*) Representing numbers by lengths of segments
*) Representing numbers by areas of plane figures
*) Representing numbers by volumes of objects
*) Identifying key elements
*) Employing isometry
*) Employing similarity
*) Area-preserving transformations
*) Escaping from the plane
*) Overlaying tiles
*) Playing with several copies
*) Sequential frames
*) Geometric dissections
*) Moving frames
*) Iterative procedures
*) Introducing colors
*) Visualization by inclusion
*) Ingenuity in 3D
*) Using 3D models
*) Combining techniques
Each chapter has several sections where a specific type of problem is examined in each section. For example, the three sections of chapter 1 are:
*) Sums of odd integers
*) Sums of integers
*) Alternating sums of squares
Each chapter terminates with a section called "challenges", which is a set of problems that are to be solved by creating images similar to those demonstrated in the chapter. Hints and solutions to these problems are provided in an appendix. Part II of the book is called "Visualization in the classroom" and is a short history of visualization and a demonstration of how physical objects can be used to illustrate the concepts.
This is an outstanding math book, demonstrating some of the very best strategies that can be used to develop and explain a proof. It is not possible to use a diagram to present every mathematical proof that you may explain to your students. However, it can be done more often than you may realize, so I recommend that all teachers of mathematics examine this book, you most certainly will find a gem that you can use.

4 comments about A First Course in Differential Equations With Modeling Applications (Student Solutions Manual for Zill's).
- this textbook supplement is a very usefull tool for students. The original author, zill, is excellent; thus, the problems are somewhat tricky; furthermore, the solutions are worked out to good extent: they show the neccesary steps, but leave some work for the student; thus, knowledge of the material is still necessary.
- the book is very thin.( a big stack of blank pages at the end to give weight) it could habe been part of the textbook. they just want more money although the book is very needed indeed
- If you got an "A" in all of your Calc. classes, you won't need this book. If you got "B"s or "C"s, and are looking for guidance from this solutions manual, you will get very little. This book skips to every 3rd problem (i.e. 3, 6, 9, 12, etc.) and barely explains the steps. It gives the solution, and maybe 1 or 2 steps along the way. That's it. This book is very thin, only about 125 pages, and was the most expensive of all the solutions manuals I've bought before. This book needs to be redone to mirror other solutions manuals, which give nearly complete solutions to ALL ODD NUMBER PROBLEMS. In my opinion, don't waste your money on this book, instead, make sure you have an excellent professor, or find a really good tutor.
- This is way too expensive for a solutions manual. Plus it only gives solutions to every other odd problem. Not worth it for the amount of money they want. Save your money for a tutor.

2 comments about GACE Middle Grades Mathematics 013.
- The book covered a lot of material, however I felt under-prepared when I took my test. A lot of the material in the book was never mentioned on the test as well. In addition, there were countless errors and mistakes in wording and in the math problems themselves. My sister, who teaches math, told me to go with my gut and not necessarily trust what the book said because so many things were incorrect. Someone really needs to proof read this book!
- The book has a lot of mistakes in it which is time consuming and frustrating when trying to prepare. It did cover a lot of information that was on the test, and I was well prepared for the test and passed it the first go around. I'm sure that there are better study guides out there, but I didn't find one. I would suggest the book, but just beware of the typos!

2 comments about Math in Minutes: Easy Activities for Children Ages 48.
- A compendium of 150 math activities specifically designed for children ages 4 to 8, "Math In Minutes" by Sharon Macdonald is a highly recommended addition to any preschool, elementary school, and home-schooling curriculum to introduce children to basic mathematical concepts and skills. MacDonald draws upon her more than fifteen years of experience and expertise training classroom teachers to create this compilation of math exercises and activities, each of which is in full compliance with the standards of The National council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM). Thoroughly 'kid friendly', "Math In Minutes" is an excellent tool for teaching mathematical literacy including number sense and numeration, computation and estimation; measurement, time, and money; geometry and spatial sense; sorting, classifying, graphing, data analysis, and probability; patters and number relationships; as well as problem solving and reasoning. Of special note is the final chapter 'Putting It All Together: A Pizza Unit of Study', as well as the extended glossary, appendices, and indexes.
- I am preparing to homeschool my son and purchased "Math In Minutes" as a resource guide: a handy book of ideas to keep in my library so that I can provide a variety of activities in our curriculum. I have to say that I got more than I bargained for.
First, I am very happy with the way that the book is laid out. After a basic introduction, which is definitely aimed more at school teachers and administrators, the author organizes the activities into several chapters corresponding to a particular mathematical concept, for example Chapter 3 is Computation and Estimation activities, Chapter 4 deals with Measurement, Time, and Money activities, Chapter 6 is Sorting, Classifying, Graphing, Data Analysis, and Probability activities, etc. Each chapter begins with a description of the mathematical concept that will be covered and specific points for the teacher to consider about teaching the concepts to children. Although I was skeptical at first about age appropriateness (the book cover indicates that these are easy activities for children 4-8 years old, but the chapter titles looked a little daunting...what was seriation again, anyway??--and will a five year old understand estimation and probability??), I must admit that MacDonald does a GREAT job at succinctly and adequately covering these topics in her introductions so that a teacher fully understands how these topics pertain to and relate to the children and child development in general at the target age group. The chapter introductions made me feel comfortable with the concepts, both as a review of the math involved and as a platform for introducing the topic to my son.
Second, the activities themselves are creative and, I think for the most part, relatively easy and inexpensive to implement both at home and in the classroom. Also, the author tells us that a premise of the book is to provide quick ideas as well, so you aren't spending hours preparing for a game that a child decides he or she has no interest in after two minutes! (great idea!)There are a variety of activities listed for each area and, for some activities, there are even recommendations on how to change up the activity to continually challenge the student (such as creating an estimation station). I also enjoyed her chapter on putting things together as a Pizza Unit Study. I really think this is a book that I will be able to use for years...as my son grows and learns, rather than a simple list of math games and worksheets that, once "conquered", are far from challenging and even boring to repeat.
Another fun note about the book is that there are also recommendations for activities that tie in books and songs in order to provide a more thematic approach to the material.
I am enjoying the book immensely and am excited to introduce some of the games and math station ideas to my son as we begin homeschooling.
