3 comments about Johnson/Evinrude Outboards, 1-2 Cylinders, 1971-89 (Seloc's Johnson/Evinrude Outboard Tune-Up and Repair Manual).
  1. A handy guide for the person wishing to know more about how their outboard operates, how to care for the same and plenty of good hints. Would be also suitable for a person wanting to take the engine apart and rebuild, written in simple style with good illustrations.

  2. This is not an owner's manual for the product. The blurb is confusing. Probably not a good item to buy on line, it is hard to see what you are getting.

  3. This book helped me rebuild a broken outboard w/o any prior knowledge. Well worth its weight in gold, not really, but its a good buy.

3 comments about The Wood and Canvas Canoe: A Complete Guide to Its History, Construction, Restoration, and Maintenance.
  1. I had an old canvas canoe I used for duck hunting that was in desperate need of repair. My hunting buddy and I decided to tackle the job of replacing broken ribs, rotten planking and re-canvasing the old girl. We literally had no idea of what we were getting into, and without the help of this book we would still be lost. It provided us with some great ideas and great step by step instructions.

  2. I purchased this book as a gift - but read it myself before giving it to them. The most informative book with very good illustrations.
It helped me make decisions on the purchase of a wood & canvas canoe. I highly recommend it for anyone interested in canoes.

4 comments about Statistical Methods in the Atmospheric Sciences, Volume 91, Second Edition (International Geophysics).
  1. Like the first edition, this book is an excellent and thorough overview of statistical methods used in the atmospheric sciences.
The main updates which are included in the second edition are the six final chapters (chapters 9-14) which cover multi-variate statistical methods as an expansion of that covered in one chapter of the first edition.
An excellent reference text for many geophysical researchers.

  2. This book is surely one of the worst statistical books in my library. If anyone is in need of a reference for some of the statistical methods commonly used in atmospheric sciences, I would suggest you look elsewhere

  3. I judge the usefulness of a book by how quickly I can learn something new and apply it to the problem I am currently working on. Most statistics books, judged by this criteria, fail miserably. But here is a book that not only succeeds, but succeeds so well I actually find myself getting excited about reading the next chapter, which has nothing to do with the problem at hand! By confining himself to just a handful of simple data sets, Wilks makes it possible to work though the examples in detail and in a variety of ways. But the most important benefit to me is that I can immediately turn his examples into software code (I use IDL), which I can use to solve my problem. Unlike so many books, which provide the broad theoretical strokes, but leave the details in shadow, Wilks explains the details in simple, straightforward language. His explanation of harmonic analysis and FFT spectral analysis was so crystal clear I believe it was the first time I thought I truly understood this important concept. I can imagine there will be statisticians who will not like this book. But for those of us working with environmental data who need to know some statistics to get our work done, this book is a godsend.

  4. I highly recommend this book for those interested in atmospheric science statistical methods. Three cheers and five stars for this great book.

3 comments about Dimensioning and Tolerancing ANSI Y14.5M-1994(N00594).
  1. Very good book for understanding dimensioning and tolerancing. Lots of illustrations makes this book one of the best I have seen.

  2. This is the absolute bible of the subject. No mechanical engineer worth his or her salt would be without a copy. It's trenchant coverage of the methods that should be employed in mechanical design is in evidence practically on every page.

  3. "..... THIS REVISION WAS INITIATED IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE OFFICIAL RELEASE OF ANSI Y14.5M-1982 in December 1982 in response to deferred comments from that revision, new conceptual developments, new symbology, and international standards expansion.

Twenty-three Subcommittee meetings and numerous working group meetings of the ASME Y14.5 Subcommittee were convened during the developmental period.

The meetings were held in various cities around the United States.

The Subcommittee's work was coordinated as much as possible with other related ASME committees and other standard developing bodies that share a common purpose on dimensioning and tolerancing or related standards.

Particularly close alliance and liaison were sought with the ASME B89 Committee on "Dimensional Metrology," and new committees ASME Y14.5.1 on "Mathematical Definition of Y14.5", and ASME Y14.5.2 on "Certification of GD&T Professionals."....."

"...... Suggestions for improvement of this Standard will be welcomed.
    They should be sent to The American Society of Mechanical Engineers;
    Attention:
    Secretary,
    Y14 Main Committee;
    345 East 47th Street;
    New York, NY 10017.

This revision was approved as an ASME National Standard on March 14, 1994."

[from the book of the foreword (this foreword is not a part of ASME Y14.5M-1994) by the commettee]

5 comments about The Ship and the Storm: Hurricane Mitch and the Loss of the Fantome.
  1. The Fantome was the first windjammer ship that I sailed on in 1983. Being the first ship I always compared other ships to her. The book is about a small group of brave men trying to save a gallant lady!

  2. Jim Carrier tells the story of The Ship and the Storm by using crew accounts, passenger interviews, surviving crew relatives and official weather related records.
Anchored in the quiet waters of the Bay at Omoa, Honduras passengers excitedly board the Windjammer Cruise Ship Fantome. Feted with the finest cuisine and free flowing rum swizzle the fun and excitement is just beginning as the tall ship prepares to sail from one tropical paradise to another.
Two mornings later as the Fantomes' guests finished their Bloody Mary and sticky bun breakfast a weather station on the West Coast of Africa was recording a drop in the barometric pressure. The Miami Hurricane Center labeled the system #46 and indicated in the margin that it was impressive.
One week later on the evening of October 17, 1998 while Fantome passengers partied tropical wave 46 was moving west past Barbados in the Windward Islands. A day later the National Hurricane Center using satellite pictures and computer models predicts that tropical wave 46 will become a hurricane.
October 21st the day Fantome arrived at the island of Guanaja off the north shoulder of Honduras a C-130 Hurricane Hunter located a weather system created by wave 46 and notified Miami that they had located a tropical depression.
However, weather in the Western Caribbean is good and Fantome passengers were still enjoying their cruise vacation. But change came the next morning and Captain Guyan March advises crew and passengers on the report of the storm.
BULLETIN: 5AM EDT SAT OCT 24, 1998. MITCH STRENGTHENS RAPIDLY INTO A HURRICANE
Storm tracks in the direction of Cuba and the Cayman Islands and forecasters are calling Mitch a potentially dangerous hurricane.
Fantome was at Omoa, Honduras where locals advised Captain March to drop both anchors and stay in port. March consults his boss in Miami by phone.
October 25th National Hurricane Center forecasters are dumbfounded by the rapid escalation from a low intensity storm to a Category 4 hurricane within a 24-hour period.
Following prolonged discussions with Windjammer Headquarters in Miami it was decided to cancel the Fantomes' cruise. Passenger safety was uppermost in their minds and they discharged the passengers at Belize City. They didn't consider Belize a safe harbor to ride out the storm so Fantome with 31 crewmembers aboard left Belize to try and outmaneuver the storm.
Hurricane Mitch was coming up on Swan Island and conventional wisdom as well as the National Hurricane Centers computer models predicts that the storm will turn to the northwest. Fantome headed southeast from Belize toward the Bay Islands north of Honduras and had the storm tracked to the northwest as was expected there would have been plenty of separation between the ship and the storm. But the monster storm called Mitch with a mind of its own defied convention and turned south where it continued to spin its Category 4 and sometimes 5 winds over the waters and islands destroying everything in it's path. High winds and waves produced by the storm extended out some 200 miles from its center. Fantomes' engines and Captain March's skilled seamanship was no match for the tall waves and winds produced by Hurricane Mitch. Eventually the powerful waves broadside Fantome and breach the ships watertight bulkheads.
The story of The Ship and the Storm is tragically compelling.

  3. Having been aboard the Fantome in the 70s. I heard stories about her sinking. It is a sad to know the details. With the woes of the Windjammer fleet it is a shame that many future generations may never see or have the opportunity to be on board a true sailing ship. This book is a great tribute to the people who gave this experience to many of us in a safe and fun manner.

  4. Excellent book for those who have traveled on the windjammer cruises. The description of the rooms - very true and the daily working of the ship very well deswcribed. Good book

  5. I had the occaision to sail through a storm on the Fantome several years before it went to the bottom. I remember some of the crew from my trip and I have many photos of the ship and its crew before, during, and after our storm. The book brought back some chilling memories. If you ever sailed the Fantome or other ships in Barefoot Cruises fleet you will find this an engrossing read.

5 comments about Handy Farm Devices: And How to Make Them.
  1. The book has a lot of devices that stood the test of time. Is great for those that are woodworkers and also going back to nature. It has money saving ideas that can be used today as the day it was written. I feel worth the money.

  2. This book is great with a ton of wonderful ideas. Can't wait to actually sit and read instead of browsing. I've already selected several items that I want to build before the summer is over. Will write more when I read it cover to cover.

  3. So far i have only read about a 1/4 of the way through it, but as a machinist/welder by trade, i was expecting a little more detail on the plans and directions. i am not saying it is not a worthwhile book. With a little imagination and the basics that are stated throughout the book you can probably be inspired to make quite a few useful items. If you are looking for IDEAS to make your chores a bit easier then check it out. It is a good book as far as basics and LOTS of ideas.

  4. Wonderful old farm devices, I am very happy I purchased this book. It is very simple and reminds me of how simple yet hardworking farmers were before modern inventions that make farming easier today. I think anyone that wants to still use the old way of doing things should check out this book. It is a basic book of basic tools that can assist the small farmer in their homestead. I would suggest it to anyone that wants to know more about old country living tools. This is a very basic foundation of information on old farm tools, their applications, and drawings to assist in actual building of the device. No schematics or anything complex, just drawings and informative accompanying paragraphs about the tool. I love it!

  5. Being a woman trying to do all of this alone would be rather overwhelming. However, If one can get some help and plan ahead, some of these things could be useful.

2 comments about Global Physical Climatology, Volume 56 (International Geophysics).
  1. This is the most thorough, most rigorous, well-written textbook in global systems climatology that I've seen. If you're bright, interested, and aren't allergic to equations (you don't need to read them to understand the book, you just have to not freak out) then this text will teach you more about the planet as a dynamic system than any other that I've seen -- plus, unlike most texbooks, it's not chuck full of stupid mistakes. I've used it in my upper division climatology class since it came out.

  2. Simply put, this is the only assigned text I kept from my college years. It's compact size and overall readability are excellent. Although intended for advanced undergrads and beginning graduate students, it's still a great reference for multi-disciplinary scientists, basic global circulation modellers, researchers, and professors. The appendices are particularly noteworhty, especially the list of English and Greek symbols commonly used in just about all the physical sciences, and the derivation of SI Units. If anything, the book is pricey (as all in the International Geophysics Series are), but this one is worth it.

5 comments about The Bluejacket's Manual (Centennial Edition ).
  1. 1.} A sentry will NEVER leave his post unless properly relieved. That is the 1st rule. There are ten of them. read the book, before I throw it at you.

  2. The Bluejacket's Manual has been a staple book of US Navy seamanship for the last century. I'm pre-Recruit Training, but knowing your trade before you're supposed to has never hurt anybody.

The hardback version is perfect for the mantle of any sailor past or present...

  3. This is a required book once you enter the Navy. More than enough information is in the book that will help you on your daily journey in the Navy. It is good to for those that are just interested in the Navy atmosphere. This book will be one that is given to you once you join the Navy. The information will help you in your test taking for promotions as well but it doesn't go into very much detail of the different ratings due to security clearances required for some of the jobs.

  4. Helped my son greatly improve his score on the OCS exam. Arrived quickly and in excellent condition.

  5. Book arrived on time and in great condition. If you know someone who is about to go to basic training for the US Navy, then this book is a great way for them to prepare. Is it necessary? No. Does it help a lot and make their life easier to be prepared? You better believe it.

    I highly recommend it.

5 comments about The Old Outboard Book.
  1. This book is stretched between a technical manual and a coffee table book way too tight. Hunn covers the larger manuf. with research that could be found on any historical website, and briefly touches on the rare and obscure in general descriptions. Do not rely on this book for technical information. Simply order specific parts lists for the motors you have. I would like to know if Hunn's other book was better as a picture book, as this one was too poorly written to be of any enjoyment.

  2. This book has become the "Bible" for most outboard collectors. It has everything in one place. The big list of almost ALL known US outboard manufacturers, The price guide which is the only published guide of its kind, developed thru consultation with a good cross section of prominent and active collectors, Great Serial number guides, Spark plug charts, and much more. Peter's style is very readable, with a "story" connected to each brand. Hundreds of outboard collectors keep a copy in their car, while touring the country looking for additions to their collections. Most helpful to identify, and value that Garage sale or Outboard meet, find. HIGHLY recommended, especially for those new to the hobby.

  3. After reading the 2nd edition of Peter Hunn's The Old Outboard Book I couldn't wait to get the revised and expanded 3rd edition. I take the book with me when I go looking for old outboards and swap meets. No better reference exists in my opinion.

  4. This is NOT a detailed repair manual, but rather a valuable history of outboards including many of the obscure makes such as the one you have leaning in the corner of the shed.

  5. This book is one to get for all ages.It lists all the brand motors of old. It gives the history of each motor which I found very interesting and helpful. It also gives a price guide of each motor and which I disagree with. The motor I have I would not sell for the price thats listed in the book. But it gives you the info on what you are looking for.
