5 comments about Mercruiser: Stern Drive Shop Manual 1986-1994 : Alpha One, Bravo One, Bravo Two & Bravo Three.
  1. I have found this manual very helpful, I am just about finished restoring a Mark Twain 165 it is a 1986 model with 140HP engine and a Alpha I mercruser stern drive. This manual has saved me many hours.

  2. This book, no manual is the best for your mercruiser, it has everything spec's, wiring diagrams, procedures, troubleshooting.
If you do your own work on your boat, you need this book.

  3. Excellent purchase, cheaper than Ebay and I recieved a new book!

  4. Well written with fine hand-drawn & photo graphics. Too many models covered in the book so that my section was only ten percent of this big volume, but the information was badly needed and most helpful....

  5. Does the job but readers will want to be aware that this manual is about the engine only - 90% of the mechanics and electrics.

3 comments about Arrowheads and Projectile Points (Identification & Values (Collector Books)).
  1. This 223 page's book is an excellent introduction to the world of prehistoric amerindian projectile points and arrowheads. In some very nice photos and inscriptions you could find the "keys" to what you collect, their relative prices, regional classification and chipping techniques. A simple and practical relation describes the U.S. materials used to make arrowheads and blades including all the regional types, edges, shapes, individual characteristics of each piece and instructions to take care with them. Indispensable to begginers and advanced collectors this book certainly attempt the amateur archaeologist's expectation.

  2. Mr. Hothem puts together a book that is easy reading but I wish it had a section which showed exactly what characteristics designates certain points from each other (with a diagram). Otherwise, I found the book to be a nice companion book to other arrowhead books I have.

  3. Good overall, although only basic pictures, simple text but get the point across. THis book is really the same for over a decade now, but has updated realistic prices. Lar did great and his son has done well since his passing. Good value price too.

2 comments about Experimental Methods for Engineers (McGraw-Hill Mechanical Engineering).
  1. I have reviewed several books in engineering experimentation to adopt one of them to my course. Among them, this book is most complete and provides lots of useful information nicely organized. One of the strengthes this book provides is the "recipe" for various enigneering experiments with excellent summary.

  2. Much of the engineering curriculum is devoted to analytical techniques for solving particular problems, often derived mathematically from first principles. However, without grounding results within the physical realm, solutions may neglect factors that do not neatly fit into the assumptions used. Thus, measurement of phenomena are needed. But what constitutes a valid measurement? Holman provides an excellent introduction to this area in _Experimental_Methods_for_Engineers_, often an otherwise neglected field of study. Few parameters can be measured directly, and those that can must be compared to a standard that is ubiquitously available and repeatable. So Holman begins with standards and units. Analysis of measured data covers sources of error and uncertainty -- without these, the measurement cannot be used with confidence for the application intended.

Subsequently, Holman introduces sensors in separate chapters for discrete physical phenomena. The first of these includes electrical sensors using known physical laws governing electro-magnetism. The next chapters cover displacement, pressure and fluid flowrate, followed by temperature and heat flux. Then forces, vibration, nuclear radiation and chemical traces are covered. _Experimental_Methods_ concludes with data acquisition and report writing descriptions. The treatment in each chapter is geared to the level of a competent engineering student. Although replete with equations, the terms are explained (unlike so many textbooks) and associated with quantified examples. Holman presents a useful overview of the instrumentation types and their limitations, together with how quantities may be derived from the values measured. A valuable addition in any technical library.

5 comments about Building the Greenland Kayak : A Manual for Its Contruction and Use.
  1. If you want to build a greenland kayak then this is all you need. Instructions are clear and not wordy. It also has sections on making paddles and paddling clothing. The style shown in this book has slight deviations from the original greenland technique but he specifically states all the changes. I built a kayak from this book with my only help being a second pair of hands, and i am only 15. The boat was exactly to his designs and it is fast, fairly stable, and responsive.

  2. My daughter and I are building kayaks in an Adult Ed class using this book as our bible. Luckily, there is an instructor who has built 2 kayaks before using this book. The book contains all you need to know, albiet that you have to spend time reading the words repeatedly because there aren't enough sketches to show what is intended. There are lots of photos, but they don't convey the same amount of info as a sketch with dimensions. But, if you keep re-reading the book to figure our how to make the jigs, you'll end up with a piece of art, that you can kayak in.

  3. This is the basic book everyone shold read to built the wooden kayak. Step by step, piece by piece, tool by tool. But remenber, your hands make the spirit of the water.
Este libro es el "básico". Todo lo que hay que saber para constrir un kayak tradicional, paso a paso. Pero recuerda, no hay que ser tan preciso, tus manos le darán el espíritu del agua

  4. I have a small library of building skin on frame kayaks. Some are better than others; this is one of the best. Another reviewer commented that this book along with Robert Morris's Building Skin-On-Frame boats would be all you need for a successful build. He has a good point. Cunningham is, of course, extremely knowledgeable and his book while small in size covers a wide range of other kayak topics very well. He is particularly good on using various tools for the same task. It helps a lot since many of us do not have extremely well equipped tool shops and need workarounds.

Fine book, nicely written, with good pictures. I'm glad I bought it.

  5. I have almost finished making my first Greenland kayak and this book has received it's fair share of use. I bought this book together with the book from Robert Morris and the books do differ quite a bit. I would recommend you use both of these books, however if I had to choose one book and I only wanted to make a greenland kayak, this would be the one. This book was worth it just for the jig on bending ribs, an area where i really struggled to get consistent results until i built the jig.

Overall i found this book extremely detailed and exacting, with precise jigs and tooling to ensure a quality result. In comparison, Robert Morris describes more different boats and makes you aware of the many different methods of building a kayak. If you have a solid appreciation for the working characteristics of wood and experience with kayaks to know how your work will affect your boat, Robert Morris provides alot more encouragment for experimentation.

Great book, if you want a Greenland kayak, and info on paddle building, equipment making and technique relating to the Greenland kayak, this is the one.

5 comments about The Complete Book of Knots.
  1. I bought this book in Escalante, Utah, when doing my first canyoneering excursion. I have seen many other books since, but this remains my favorite.
    1) It has very clear pictures that make it easy to follow the instructions

    2) As other reviewers have written, each knot has a little history blurb about it. Nice touch!

    3) The book is organized logically - by use (boating, fishing, caving, etc.)

    4) The book contains more knots than you could ever possibly want to know.

Highly recommend to someone looking for a "One Stop" knot book.

  2. I picked this book up to learn how to tie a couple of the more obscure climbing knots like the trident and triple bowline and to have fun with the rest. The book is well organized (except for the utterly useless directory of knots), and the diagrams are large. My gripe is that he skips steps, and magically produces extra slack halfway through a knot. There are cases where I have thrown the book down and had to figure it out by trial and error (not what I paid $20 for). Furthermore some of the methods he uses to tie knots (such as the butterfly) are flat out strange, or clumsy. When I'm up 100 feet and my life depends on it I need more efficiency.

  3. I was new to knots so I found this book rather entertaining, it is not too technical nor too complex, neither too large. It indicates the use of the knots so it comes kinda handy. I think I am ready for next-level knots (more elaborated).

  4. The book wasn't quite as complete as I had hoped, but the illustrations are good, and the short histories on the knots were interesting. For the price, it was a fine book. Some knots have different names and it seems that there were several repeated knots in the pages of the book. I'm sure this was because of the way the book was organized, but I would rather have had more knots than repeated ones.

  5. I'm terrible with knots; took me forever to get my 2nd Class Scout badge forty odd years ago because of knots! There are more comprehensive and detaild knot books out there and there are even animated knot-tying websites, but this book's combination of good explanations and illustrations worked for me. For someone whose shoes are rarely neatly tied, it enabled me to stand in front of my instructor in my Master's class and tie my eight knots. Now my Sperrys are tied with sheet bends and have rolled back stoppers at the ends of the laces.

5 comments about The Arts of the Sailor: Knotting, Splicing and Ropework.
  1. This is an excellent resource book and we will use it a lot....

  2. A great book chock full of interesting ideas to make your boat more seamanlike. The definative rope working book.

  3. This book has some of the most clearly articulated and illustrated instructions I have ever encountered.

  4. A generally informative book, but.....
some of the directions refer to diagrams with arrows showing the direction of the rope. No such arrows!
Overall fair to good diagrams and interesting history, but I think I would have bought a different book had I known what was missing.

  5. I bought this for my son - he just purchased his first sailboat. He loved the info and that it is such a compact size - he can keep it on the boat for quick reference. Though not as complete as "The Ashley Book of Knots" it does cover the basics. Great for beginners!

5 comments about Canoecraft: An Illustrated Guide to Fine Woodstrip Construction.
  1. Don't expect to get patterns to build a canoe with this book. All of the other reviews didn't tell you this. If you want to build one of the boats mentioned in the book you have to go to the authors website and purchase them seperately for another $69. If you want to build a boat with this added cost look at getting Stripper's Guide to Canoe-Building it has full size patterns.

  2. Coupled with Building a Strip Canoe by Gil Gilpatrick this book will explain everything you need to know to craft an absolutely beautiful canoe. This book begins with a description of canoe history and follows up with desireable characteristics of various canoe designs. While the actual process is described very well, there are some technical aspects that a person with less woodworking experience would have to search elsewhere to find an explaination. I many places the author explains the best way to do a task as well as some options for alternative construction. The method described in this book really is "fine" canoebuilding. The finishing details the author desribes are what will really set your craft ahead of all other do-it-yourself canoes on the water. Keep in mind that there are no plans for actual canoes in this book. If you are someone who is experienced in "lofting" or technical drawing maybe you can make your own plans from the specs the author gives for his boats but for most people they just expect you to buy your plans from Bear Mountain Canoe or some other design house. That aside, this is an excellent book to help in the construction of any canoe and it left me absolutely jazzed to begin my own boat.

  3. A very good book about Cedar Strip Canoe building and its history. I have looked at other canoe building books online, but I kept seeing this book pop up. And I now know why people kept raving about it. It is a very well done book that's a progretion of the authors and others knowledge. Right off the top of my head I can't remember what addition he's up to, but he learns and releases new additions with more information. I have not got my canoe done yet, but I have started. One suggestion, read or at least familiarize yourself with all of the techniques/chapters in the book before you start. You can always look back, but you can't always fix the wood if you miss something. TAKE MY WORD ON IT!!!

  4. I like this book. Moorse's canoes are striking, but I think that a lot of what is presented may be beyond the skill of the casual builder. It is obvious the Ted Moores is a fabulous woodworker. The problem is that I am not. I really enjoyed reading how he builds his canoes and looking at the wonderful photos that are in the book.

Personally, I don't like external stems on a canoe. They widen the entry line and just look weird to me. Building them is also a fiddly undertaking and I'm not sure that they really add much. I built my canoe using both Canoecraft and Gilpatrick's book . . . I found the latter a much more approachable text.

If I were a master woodworker I would only follow Moore's book and I would have the most beautiful canoe that I could build. I'm not a master woodworker so I follow Gilpatrik and I am fully satisfied.

I recommed anyone that is interested in canoe building to buy this book. It is just amazing what he can do with wood.

  5. I am female, I built the redbird 20 yrs ago. It is the most awesome paddle. It has been to Minnesota, Columbia river, etc. I found the directions clear and easy, I lofted the stations, did everything. The most difficulty I had was the fiberglassing: Colorado winters get cold and the epoxy clouded some on the outside. The shop couldn't keep up with the cold. This book also guides you through design features that help you build the shape for the funtion you desire. After 20 yrs, this book is still on my shelf.

5 comments about The LabVIEW Style Book (National Instruments Virtual Instrumentation Series).
  1. I get the feeling the other reviews are written by the author and his friends. Some are just a little too glowing.

This book is good but, needs editing because it is very long winded; using twice as many words than necessary to get the point across (the author is always stressing efficiency). Many of the "rules" are subjective and should be called suggestions. For example, the author has a rule disabling "Show dots at wire junctions". I like the dots. The VI's are not included with the book. Some are available from the authors company site but, only after registration.

I recommend the book but, be prepared to spend the time required for reading.

  2. For just a decade I've been dealing LabVIEW based system.
During the career, for almost all years I was stick to
narrowly inmatured programming style. So then unfortunately
sometimes I harmed my own career.

If I'd met this book earlier I were taking on the management
of a certain LabVIEW project. It's certainly a very regrettable
truth, but just becoming certified recently I'll go along
    another career.

This is very helpful book, including GUI style and BD style.
It is important you should first have review in the data
structure and location of each objects in the diagram.
Various examples will guide you to the real world of LabVIEW.

Like to say thanks to the author.

  3. As the Title suggests "The Labview Style Book" only focuses on Style and provides no useful information outside the scope of the title.

  4. I read the first couple chapters and was impressed with the quality of information. I then gave it to a programmer I am supervising for a project. I had him read it and told him to adhere to the standards of the book. After a couple weeks the code he is turning out is much improved. The flow is better, the code is documented and there is actual error control being used. It will be much easier to maintain the project as time goes on. The point of the book is to write better labview diagrams so I think it works quite well in that regards.

  5. P. Blume nailed it!!!!! I am a heavy user of LabView (aka "the View") and this guy absolutely nailed it. This may as well be entitled "the Joy of LabVIEW". I have learned more new positions and ways to get the best out of my partner (LabVIEW) than ever before. Let's just say after reading this masterpiece a cig and a drink were in order.

Kudos to P. Blume and the team at Bloomy Controls.
