3 comments about Electromagnetic Analysis and Design in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (Biomedical Engineering).
  1. In spite of the importance of a coil in MRI, such as gradient and RF coil, there are few books on it. So many books on MRI. But they have been focused only on the imaging method or the basic principles of MRI.

This is the only guide book on RF and gradient coil, as I have found, and deals with current topics on the analysis and design on the hardware of MRI. Also, the references on each topics are well arranged and very useful.

  2. I bought this book and found it worth the price. This book is very convenient to use. It has the basic theories, and a lot of good references which may take me so much time to find by myself.

  3. The book "Electromagnetic Analysis and Design" by Jianming Jin is one of the very few books that covers hardware aspects of NMR. The book gives a clear overview of the theory behind the design of both gradient coils and rf coils. What I missed somehow in the book is a more hands-on approach and references on how to really start designing one's own NMR coils.

1 comments about The Physics of Liquid Crystals (International Series of Monographs on Physics).
  1. Like every book by de Gennes, this book is a classic! This latest edition in a "must have" text for everyone even remotely associated with liquid crystals. The text is written in a self contained fashion, but the mathematics and physics is of advanced level, and to fully appreciate the content one must have some grip on statistical mechanics, tensor and vector algebra, electromagnetism and continuum physics. Thus it is ideal for physicists, a rewarding challenge for chemists and starting researchers.

To get a simple understanding of liquid crystals (without chemical and mathematical equations), a text by Peter J. Collins (Liquid Crystals: Nature's delicate phase of matter) is highly recommended. For people interested in synthesis of liquid crystals, this text has almost nothing to offer and maybe another text by Collins is more useful. Another important text on the physics of liquid crystals is by Chandershekar. But bottomline is while you may want to look at other texts for specific needs (synthesis or display devices), The Physics of Liquid Crystals by de Gennes is the book one must have and one must read to make a living in this area. (of course, I will read the whole text too....)

5 comments about Why Things Are the Way They Are.
  1. I am a network engineer with little rememberance of my college physics. I'm in the process of reacquainting myself with physics and picked up this book. I found it exceptionally interesting, understandable, well explained, and well illustrated. The development is exceptionally smooth, starting from first principles and carefully building concepts. It was sophisticated enough so that there is real meat, not just fluff. I feel it has prepared me to dive into more rigorous QM textbooks because I have an understanding of some of the consequences of QM.

  2. This is very interesting book about somee selected concepts and physics of the materials. There are no formulas, everything is in narrative format. Author starts with crystal structures, particle wave concepts, atom, some quantum mechanical concepts and than application of quantum concepts to heat transfer, magnetism, conduction, electric current and super conductivity.Author provides very nice descriptive pictures and diagrams. Any one who wants to read more about similar subjects with more formulas, still easy reading could also profit from " Understanding Properties of Matter by De posta".

  3. Most people may find certain aspects of Physics as overbearing , too confusing, and mathematically FORBIDING.Anybody who has studied Physics knows that Quantum Physics is the foundation of modern physics.I found this book inviting, imformative, and very helpful in my self study of modern physics ,without the mazes of mathematical formulations, matrics, transformations, and operators overcoming my train of thought. The skill of the author as a writer makes this book a smooth and educating read.I recommend this book to anybody interested in physics.

  4. This book provides a clear and interesting description of how quantum mechanics explains the workings and properties of light and matter. Learn why copper is the color it is and why glass is transparent to light, among other things. These explanations are provided in a mostly non-mathematical way but at the same time are not fluff. Its nice to see a book explain how quantum theory effects everyday life instead of the usual round of mystical pronouncements. I was actually surprised at how engaging the book was, actually at times I could hardly put it down. Hard to believe getting all that interested into why things are the way they are but if you are interested in physics and engineering you will find this an enjoyable book. I would like to see the author write more books on other aspects of physics and quantum theory.

  5. This book is the worst book I ever purchased I want my money back

4 comments about Simulations for Solid State Physics Paperback without CD-ROM: An Interactive Resource for Students and Teachers.
  1. This is an excellent collection of solid state physics computer simulations that I recommend highly.

  2. This is not a review. In case anyone misses it the CD with the simulations is only available with the hard cover version of this book. Be aware of this when you make a choice to buy the book.

  3. The hardcover version of this book which includes the CD-ROM with all of the simulations is no longer in print. Check out the book's website at http://www.ruph.cornell.edu/sss/sss.html and you should be able to download the computer simulations for free (at least as of February 2004.) This paperback book is a very helpful companion to these programs and includes lots of useful exercises as well as concise summaries of the basic concepts of solid state physics without getting lost in mathematical derivations like most textbooks seem to do.
