4 comments about Structural Engineering Formulas.
- Excellant quick referance. Reviewed this book while studying for recent PE exam. Author included plenty of blank "Note" pages throughout book which I utilized to add comments and referances to other texts. Used book during exam with great success.
- The book provides numerous structural formula in metric format only. there is a conversion chart that shows up at the end. Nowhere in the description of the book does it state the formula applications are for SI units ONLY.
- well organized contents. the ability to access the contents over the net is a big plus.
- This is a very handy little book. Properties of plane areas, basic vibration, beam formulas, plates w/ various b.c.'s, foundations, frames, arches, earth retaining, pipes & tunnels. Think of it as a specialized, watered down Roark's with more than a few hidden gems. It was extremely useful in my exam and is still very used as a quick reference or for basic first passes and superpositions for more complicated problems.
I humbly suggest that the review mentioning units is unfounded. The book is unitless as far as I've seen, aside from the examples. The examples use metric units.

5 comments about Landscape Construction.
- I found this book to be very thorough and detailed in its approach to a variety of landscape construction issues. It has detailed pictures and diagrams that illustrate the processes and make it easier to understand. The information is up to date, easy to read and a great learning tool for the student, professional or hobby person. As a landscape student, I find it a great resource book.
- Just another really expensive textbook with no real information provided. The Better Homes and Garden series has much more how-to information, great photographs, and ten percent of the cost too.
- I found clear concise information on this subject rare until discovered Mr. Sauter's Landscape Construction. There is a host of Better H & G / Sunset books available, but those are really idea/coffee table books written for the weekend warrior. If you really want to know the best-practices and standards for the industry, this is the reference for you. Great for the student and pro alike.
- This book is full of incredible and professional information related to Landscape Construction. It's not meant to be a DIY book you'd get from Home Depot or Lowes. This book is meant for students and professionals wanting to learn best practices regarding Landscape Construction. Amateurs, landscape designers and architects can gain some valuable insights, too. We used this book as our textbook in the various landscape construction classes I took, studying to be a landscape designer.
- I'm glad I decided to buy this book, despite its high price. Having just recently become a landscape designer/contractor, it proved invaluable many times in the course of our company's first big job. For example, the sections on stone paving were very helpful when we were building a flagstone patio, as they helped us select the best foundation and edging materials.
I like the way the book is arranged, i.e. having a large section on paving, beginning with materials and site preparation for paving in general. This is followed by a chapter on each of the specific paving materials, such as concrete, unit pavers, dry laid stones, mortared paving, and granular paving.
The extensive section on retaining walls, which I am about to take advantage of in our next job, is arranged similarly.
This book is the industry standard. It is used as a text in City College of San Francisco, and it is also listed as a resource in the California Contractor's State License Board's Study Guide for the Landscaping (C-27) License Examination.
So if you want to do landscape construction, I highly recommend this one.

- Excellant product. I am prior military but have been out for almost 20 years and have just gone back in, this time as an Officer. I found this book very informative and helpful in preparing for Officer Training and would recommend it highly!
- ...For any civilian wishing to enter Defence, particularly the Air-Force, this is a good read. It teaches values that are very much needed to be a true asset to the organisation.

1 comments about Technical Graphics Communication, 3rd edition.
- This really is the most elegant book I have seen. What a better example of excellent technical graphic communications from the authors to any reader, than the magnificent design of the textbook itself !!!.
This book, written in a clear and understandable language, covers everything you need to learn about traditional and computer-based techniques used today in real world companies, since more than never technical graphics communication is an essential area of expertise that will make you a highly competitive technologist.

2 comments about Civil Drafting Technology (6th Edition).
- When I read the word Drafting in the title I assumed this book would focus on civil drafting as it applies to modern (CAD) technology. Instead there are many references to manual drafting which few drafters use any more. A better title would leave the technology out of the title and substitute the word theory, thus letting the buyer know that this is a generic overview of civil drafting theory, not a book that a CAD operator will get much use out of.
In my estimation this book has a Value of around thirty dollars only. Unfortunately, pricing trends seem to indicate that any words committed to print by the The Gods (engineers, programmers, etc.) are worth their weight in gold, regardless of their value.
- I purchased this book with the hopes that it would help me understand civil drafting. There is no answer section to check my work. So,,,I do not know if I am on the right track with my understanding.
Does anyone know if there is a solutions manual?

2 comments about Machining Fundamentals.
- Excellent textbook. This book has great illustrations and detailed instructions on how to do many of the setups for basic machining. Also, each section has the particular safety issues highlighted in red. Several references regarding cutting feeds and speeds to hardness conversions are found in the back. The workbook is also great for reinforcing the topics. So far the best text I have used.
- This is book contains basic general knowledge as to what tools might be in a shop, and what it might be used for. It has very little/or no machining training/procedures. If you are looking for procedures/tasks, this isnt the book to get.

5 comments about Electrical Wiring Residential: Based On The 2005 National Electric Code (Softcover) (Electrical Wiring Residential).
- Well written. Easy reading and understandable. Figures and images enhance a clear understanding.
- I have the Black & Decker Complete Guide to Home Wiring but it was published in 2002. I saw the new third edition was published in 2005. I like the Black & Decker Complete Guide Books because they have amazing illustrations. They educate you just enough for you to realize that you need a much better book. I wanted an extremely comprehensive book that included the new 2008 national electrical code. My search led me to this book.
This is a text book. A different reviewer wrote that this was not a reference book. I disagree. The purpose of a text book is to thoroughly educate a novice on a specific topic. This book is extremely informative. I purchased the paperback edition. This book is well worth the money. This is the book that you want to buy. Your search is over.
- unless you are trying to pass the NEC exam, this book will be way over your head.
It not only has tons of equations (which are useless to the average homewoner), but it has practice exams at the end of each chapter.
don't buy it if you just want to remodel your home. It's great for the exam.....i suppose.
i think the title should be clear that this book is not for the average homewoner.
- I had a carpenter frame a second story addition to my house, I had decided to do all electrical work myself...and have it inspected. The space had 2 bedrooms, bathroom and a hallway. I had a bunch of books including this one. I must say that each time I was looking for an answer, I found it in this book, from calculation of box volume required for a given amount of wires, to submitting my plan drawings to the town for permit. If you're doing some serious work or simple work and you don't want to be shuffling between 5 books, just get this one. I should add that I passed the inspections (rough and finished work) on the first time.
- IT IS A GOOD BOOK FOR ELECTRICAL DESIGN BASED ON 2008 NATIONAL ELECTRIC CODE

5 comments about Markup & Profit: A Contractor's Guide.
- I'm not sure about all of the reviews but I didn't get that much from this book.
Most of my life has been done studying marketing and I've done really well with the information that I've learned from Dan Kennedy and other marketing gurus. I got this book because I thought that this would have some info on contractor marketing specific to this type of business and I was wrong.
He starts talking about market in Chapter 4 and the first thing he labors on is business cards. Great. However, that doesn't get the phone ringing. Then he talks about job signs to use at the job site. Great. But you use those AFTER you get a job. Again, that doesn't get the initial leads in. Then he mentions a brief summary about using door hangers, the yellow pages, and direct mail.
AND THAT'S IT!
Yes, I understand that this book is called "Mark Up & Profit" and not "Market & Profit." Don't get me wrong; this is a great book on maximizing the leads and jobs you do have. It's great in the aspect of marking up your jobs and profiting, using the right forms, what to do and what NOT to do in your contracting business. If that's what you're looking for then you'll get that from this book.
I think the reason that I gave this 3 stars is because I believe the guy is a little old fashioned. He states that it's more difficult for women to sell construction jobs which I disagree with adamantly. That pissed me off. I close more jobs than my male counterparts so that's completely untrue.
He also talks about wearing a suit and tie when estimating jobs. How stupid is that? This is the construction business...we're not selling insurance!! We've always used very clean and pressed button shirts or polo shirts with our logo on it and nice slacks. Never a suit and tie. And we've always done very well getting jobs.
Then he doesn't talk about getting the phone ringing, although he claims that he does with his half-baked marketing section. There are no other suggestions to get construction jobs like using the AOA magazine and other apartment manager/owner magazines, or getting on thebluebook.com.
I recommend this book if you're interested in the numbers and the bottom line of your business. He helps you find your break even point and other number equations that can help you stop losing money and start making more money.
Just skip his "marketing" section...
- Just skimmed this detailed book and its focus is profitability for a construction company. Includes a CD with helpful forms and checklists.
- While the book has some great advice and positive inspiration. I thought it was a bit dated for 2007. The forms on the CD were old and lacking. I had made a batch of forms before I read the book that were much better. I would like to see someone do a book like this focusing on a specific trade.
- it is a very good book that help new contractors and even old ones to price properly and not to lose also it gives alot ot tips
-
This book has a world of information that is extremely helpful for any aspect of the construction field from start to finish. I would strongly recommend this book to anyone that wants to know how to lower their overhead and still give out quality service with a greater profit or to someone that is looking for inexpensive ideas on marketing their business to increase activity.
