  1. This really is the most elegant book I have seen. What a better example of excellent technical graphic communications from the authors to any reader, than the magnificent design of the textbook itself !!!.

This book, written in a clear and understandable language, covers everything you need to learn about traditional and computer-based techniques used today in real world companies, since more than never technical graphics communication is an essential area of expertise that will make you a highly competitive technologist.

4 comments about The ARRL Handbook for Radio Communications 2008: 2008 (Arrl Handbook for Radio Communications).
  1. The ARRL Handbook for Radio Communications (formerly known as the Radio Amateur's Handbook) has been around since the early 20th century. It has always been both technical and practical. My only criticism, and it is from a personal viewpoint, is that in recent years there is more technical detail and fewer practical projects, but don't let that stop you! Indispensable.

  2. "The ARRL Handbook for Radio Communications" is a classic never equaled in the discipline. It is the most compact, practical assmeblage of notes on radio frequency communication in existence.

While the 'A' in ARRL stands for 'Amateur' don't let that fool you. I am an electrical engineer of 25 years professional experience. My specialty is electro-magnetic compatibility or EMC. I and many of my associates, (some with PHd's in electrical engineering) refer to this book when it comes time to apply theory and get something operating. ARRL makes a systematic effort to keep this important reference current with the latest technological developments.

This book is great if you're trying to build your first ham set or doing more advanced professional work.

  3. With the searchable CD-ROM, you can find and read about anything in the printed edition, and makes everything really easy to find fast. I LOVE it!!

Section on DIGITAL SIGNAL PROCESSING is a great balance between theory, math (just enough to get us by!), and actual practical applications. You can actually understand it without the heavy Differential Equations and Calculus... and come away with a decent understanding of DSP.

An off-shoot of DSP is the SDR (Software Defined Radio), and that is covered in here too. What it is, how it works, and actual implementations. This is an evolving Leading Edge Technology item, so of course, things are changing on a daily basis... but it's still a great way to get started if you're new to SDR's.

Thank you, ARRL! For making keeping up with Electronics Technology something the rest of us can manage with your very timely help.

  4. This is a great book for understanding many aspects of radio communication and RF. It contains practical information with a minimum of theory. It starts from the basics and works up to more complex topics. If you want to get into ham radio, this will be an excellent reference. Also, engineers and technicians will find this invaluable as well.

5 comments about Drawing and Designing with Confidence: A Step-by-Step Guide.
  1. Although I've been drawing and illustrating for a living for quite some time now, this book served to refresh my memory on things that I have forgotten and teach me some new and quick short cuts. I highly recommend this book for beginners and polished illustrators.

  2. The book has alot of great art work and teaches some inetersting points but unless you already an acomplished artist, this book will bore you, over whlem you, and mabe even discourage you.

I didn't feel the confidence the books title said it would give. Mabe I will reread it when I have the confidence in my art work to understand what the book is talking about.

Its not that its a bad book, its just filled with alot of bla bla bla and not enough instruction-

  3. You have to put in some time but this book gives you all the tools you need to draw well. I can already see my progress after a few hours. Highly recommend this book.

  4. Mike Lin is considered the master by many on this topic. I refer back to his work many times. I would consider purchasing a supplementary "how-to" book (e.g. Grant Reid's Landscape Graphics) which describes process in a little more detail.

    Enjoy.

  5. this book has nothing to show for designing principles at all it mostly or complety center itself with the graphical presentation of a theme, more usefull for a first year architectural student that hasnt yet started in the graphical expression portion of his academic pensum but for someone with more than a year of study has little or nothing to contribute.

  1. The book was a great help for a Mechanical Engineer that forgot some of the basic knowledge because not using the information after college. If you plan on taking discipline-specific second part of the exam this book is a very must have.

5 comments about Marks' Standard Handbook for Mechanical Engineers 11th Edition.
  1. IT seems this book is a CD for use of a Wireless Area Network (WAN), so how can it possibly be hardcover? And why is is three times more expensive than the normal edition, but still looks like it is the same 10th edition material on CD ONLY?

  2. I think its very useful handbook. A must have for all fresh graduates.

  3. This belongs on my desk. Katrina took my previous copy. I feel better having it within arms reach.

  4. I purchased this, along with Lineburg's Mechanical Engineering Reference Manual for the PE Exam when I took my PE Exam. I cracked it open a few times while studying and once during the exam. I didn't find what I was looking for and I almost NEVER use it during my work. I am in the process field, pumps, pipe, etc. I use Lindeburg's manual at least twice a week. Skip this book and buy something more specific to your specialty. It's far to generic to be useful to me.

  5. This is a timeless Mechanical Engineering Handbook. I used it in college, and I use it when needed. The handbook is very general and does provide a lot of useful information. The key to this handbook is knowing where to look for information. Descriptions and explanations are kept brief and to the point. I like this. The explanations are just enough to help you understand the basics subject matter and point you in the right direction.

5 comments about Engineering Formulas.
  1. This a must have for all engineers, it contains the simplest to more complex formulae required for day to day engineering calculations & design.

  2. This book is a newer version to the one my father lent me while on my first internship. I recommend this book to any engineer, since you can find all the formulas you might ever need all in a nice pocket size book.

  3. This book is a great tool for engineering students and expeienced engineers alike!

  4. The fun thing about this book is that it has everthing you learned (or should have learned) getting your Engineering degree. It's all there! It usually takes some time to sort thru what all the vaiables mean, and often you have to flip between look up tables, but it is so charming to find EVERYTHING in one spot in a book so small you can carry it in your front pocket.

  5. This is the absolute book for every engineer who wants to be the leader. This is a very good handbook of daily need. I suggest each one of you to buy this without any doubt.

5 comments about Designing with Web Standards (2nd Edition).
  1. It's a very good book, and one I'd recommend to any developer who is trying to make the switch from tables to CSS-based code and standards, but if you've been using standards in your work for a while this book will only tell you things you already know.

However, Zeldman's tone is always light and engaging, and sometimes it's good to have a little refresher.

5* if you're new to web standards
    4* otherwise

  2. I found it a very interesting book to read but it didn't give as much of concrete situation analysis as I expected. It surely convinced me to embrace techniques for the visually impaired and textual devices.

  3. This book is a must read for anyone associated with a website. Designer, developer, manager.

  4. This was a groundbreaking work when first written. Zeldman was one of the early advocates for web standards and especially browser standards for CSS, what is now the underpinning of most quality websites. Without his work, and that of a few others (Eric Meyer among them), the web would not look quite as well as it does, and the design code would not be kept as separate from the content.

If you are already using CSS in your web pages, this book will be below your knowledge level and unnecessary to creating sites. If you are new to CSS, it is a kind, gentle, and thoroughly explicating introduction. It is a pleasant and easy read. It doesn't lay out dozens of ways to do things, but it explains a methodology and the raison d'etre. It is a must read introduction if you are contemplating a switch to CSS. Zeldman's website at zeldman.com is also useful support for this undertaking.

  5. Is this Kindle edition price accurately listed? $20 seems a lot to ask for an edition that has $0 resale value. Is there something in this Kindle version that outshines the majority of other Kindle books? From the sample, I see a poorly formatted TOC, and no index (or "searchable terms" index alternative). I think the author and/or publisher should reconsider this listing.

5 comments about Markup & Profit: A Contractor's Guide.
  1. Just skimmed this detailed book and its focus is profitability for a construction company. Includes a CD with helpful forms and checklists.

  2. While the book has some great advice and positive inspiration. I thought it was a bit dated for 2007. The forms on the CD were old and lacking. I had made a batch of forms before I read the book that were much better. I would like to see someone do a book like this focusing on a specific trade.

  3. it is a very good book that help new contractors and even old ones to price properly and not to lose also it gives alot ot tips

  4. This book has a world of information that is extremely helpful for any aspect of the construction field from start to finish. I would strongly recommend this book to anyone that wants to know how to lower their overhead and still give out quality service with a greater profit or to someone that is looking for inexpensive ideas on marketing their business to increase activity.

  5. El libro es una buena guia para la evaluación y analisis de riesgos y utilidades, debemos considerarlos en la estimación de los Proyectos de construccion.
La entrega del producto por amazon fue en en el tiempo estimado.

5 comments about Mechanical Engineering Reference Manual for the PE Exam, 12th Edition.
  1. This book is a must have for the PE Mechanical Exam, however like anything if you do not put any time into learning the material and knowing where to find the equations you will have trouble during the exam...you must do your homework. If you want to pass the exam the first time follow the author's suggestion on how many hours need to be devoted to study. The only criticism I have for the book is the order in which some of the material is presented. Along with this book you need to purchase the practice problems by Lindeburg. During the exam you may want to bring in a few of your undergrad text books depending on the specific test you will be taking. Overall the author has done an excellent job taking a very broad subject and compressing it down into an easy to use book.

  2. This was my major "P.E. Exam" reference for both the prep & the actual exam (11th edition). I've also found it a great addition to my collection of desk references.

Buy it, study it, use it, and good luck!

  3. I have 11th edition, how is it compared with 12th? Do I have to order the 12th to keep updated for the exam? Thanks for your comments.

  4. At first I was going to borrow a co-workers copy of this book to save myself the money. After using it for a few weeks I went ahead and bought my own copy. This is an excellent reference manual, not just for taking the PE, but also for work. The book contains just enough information to get you started on a topic and perform most calculations/analysis. I was amazed that it even contained topics on management that I have been covering in my MBA classes.

This was all I needed for taking the PE. Don't bother bringing suitcases of books. This alone was enough to answer all but one of the 80 questions.

  5. I purchased the MERM and the Practice Problem manual and used it for my exam prep. It starts at a review level much more fundamental than what is required for most folks, but good to get you back in the swing of things if you've been out of practice for a while.

I used the planning guide in the front of the book for my prep and condensed their 14 week program down into 7 weeks. After practicing Consulting Engineering for 5 years, I spent 8 years working for a Temperature Control contractor and got really rusty on the calcs. I joined a firm again in the fall and signed up for the exam. I borrowed someone's copy of the NCEES practice exam and between these materials and that exam, it's all the prep I did. I passed on the first attempt.

You will see people with a ridiculous amount of materials on exam day, I took this book and my ASHRAE books (I took the HVAC depth exam) and it was everything I needed. The prep gets you familiar with the Tables and text, it's all that's needed for the exam.

Exam day convenience and familiarity are just as important as the review process. With only 6 minutes per problem, you had better have your road map quickly and this reference does just that.

Several other folks at my firm have past editions of this and refer to it from time to time. Every person from every discipline in my exam had the appropriate version of this manual for their discipline. I highly recommend this reference!
