  1. Easy tips, that are fast and practical. I only wish I'd found it years ago.

  2. "Rapid Math Without a Calculator", by A.F. Collins, Reprinted Citadel Press, NJ, 1956/1987/2006. (Originally ISBN 0-8065-1058-7). Soft cover, paged, illustrations & tables, & Index. 8 1/4" x 5 3/8".

Author, noted mathematician & physicist, introduces basic arithmetic nomenclature, then focuses on methods including rapid addition & subtraction, short cuts in multiplication, division, fractions, finding square & cube roots, and concludes with useful tables & formulas and a brief introduction to magic with figures including magic squares, etc.

The short cuts in multiplying & dividing certain number sets by using the complement or sliding methods and use of "casting out nines" or "method of unitates" (sum of figures making up a number reduced to one figure) to verify answers is intriguing.

Current dependency on modern pocket-sized calculators can be devastating, for if they malfunction, persons not familiar with performing conventional or short cut arithmetic may be in a quandary, including the average person whether student, businessman, or homeowner. Collins describes techniques to evince rapid end-results using easily learned unconventional formats. Significantly, the book has been reprinted and updated and expanded since its original publication.

  1. While this book is excellent for review, it is horrible for trying to learn the material. I suggest buying a different book to learn the concepts and buy this book to practice. The questions are challenging.

  1. I could tell this was no ordinary kids' counting book by the title and the stunning cover! Images of intricate paper collages grace the pages of this book. Artist Steve Jenkins does an exceptional job bringing nocturnal creatures of the sea to life with his outstanding collage illustrations. He captures nocturnal sea creatures in a very ecological and friendly way!

Author Deborah Lee Rose, a former national science writing fellow at University of California at Berkeley, is no stranger to science or childrens' books. This wonderful writer/artist duo combine their talent into one of the most mesmerizing picture books ever for kids ages 3 through 8!

Do your children ever ask questions about sea creatures? Well, if they do, this is the perfect book to properly introduce them to nocturnal sea creatures! From a blue whale calf to spider crabs; furry otters to sea lions, they'll be amazed at who lives in the sea!

This book captures the true essence of the creatures who live deep in the sea. It is a rhyming, fun-filled picture book which provides children with rhymes, counting, and science--all in one book!

This book would also lend well in the primary classroom, whether you are a kindergarten teacher looking for a great picture book or a primary science teacher looking for a springboard to your thematic science unit or an art teacher looking for examples or collage illustrations.

Counting along with this book, kids are in for a surprise as they complete numbers one through 10. Suddenly, like the flip of a speedy porpoise, the book counts backwards from 10 to one! Wow, that's sure to put a smile on your young pre-reader's face! And they thought the book was over when they reached the magical number 10!

For older children, the book provides additional information (in the last couple of pages) about the nighttime sea animals featured in the book. It is inspirational enough to start a wonderful discussion with your kids or class about the magic of the deep blue sea, and subtle enough to be the perfect bedtime book---learning numbers while gazing at the intricate paper collages. You can almost feel the texture as you admire the collages.

Vibrant and bold colors harmoniously combine with rhythmical, inspirational words in this wonderful nocturnal tour of the ocean. You almost expect a music track to follow. Ever wonder what the wonderful symphonies these animals can concoct when the lights go down?

Highly recommended...in the home, classroom or home school and truly a great read for kids of all ages. It brings the sea just a little closer to home (even if you live in the desert!).

  2. Yet another counting/rhyming picture book but the pictures and relatively unique animals make it worthwhile.

My children loved being able to learn more about the animals they saw and I even learned several interesting facts.

The author did a great job choosing which animals to include out of so many...a great variety and I appreciated that the book counted down as well as up.

  3. We have so many counting books, but this is a special one. My 2.5 year old loves it, and I enjoy reading it as well. It features 20 different sea creatures, some I know, and some I'd never heard of before (nudibranches, basket stars, etc.), the rhymes flow nicely, and the pictures are beautiful. A winner.

  4. My [..]son absoulutely loves these books. The illustrations are beautiful and my son loves the rhymes. I would highly reccommend these books for any young child.

  1. I bought this as a reference for a college programming competition since we were allowed printed material but not Internet access. I have a degree in Mathematics, but even I forget some basic formulae on occasions (again, what was the formula for the area of a cone?). It's an alphabetized reference of basic high school mathematics theorems and formulae. The areas include (non-abstract, real) algebra, Euclidean geometry, plane trigonometry, and just a little bit of calculus. It also includes some elementary formulae from physics (mechanics specifically) and statistics. It doesn't bother thoroughly explaining the concepts, so I wouldn't use it as a piece of learning material. Instead, it is designed to be a quick reference. Definitions are presented, formulae are included where they are needed, and there are occasionally examples with solutions. If you're studying pre-calculus mathematics, this would be a handy reference and would save you from having to dig through your textbooks. It might also help when studying for the ACT or SAT, but there are better resources. If you're in calculus, you won't get much from it, however. Only the very, very basic integration formulae are included. Also, it's not quite enough to make it through an introductory statistics or physics class since some important items are omitted. For certain people, specifically someone needing a quick reference for pre-calculus mathematics and only need formulae instead of explanations, it works.

  1. Precalculus is one of the courses that notoriously turns young people off of an interest in Mathematics. This work by Warren Esty in not only interesting and accessible, but offers a course of precalculus that is linear, intuitive and clear. Without confusion or repetition he covers all the points necessary and interesting to an understanding of precalculus and perfectly prepares the reader and student for further studies in mathematics. Whether a veteran mathematician or a new student, this book is highly recommended as a challenging and provocative example of the power of new math. Bravo, Dr. Esty.
