  1. The authors give a nice presentation of theory involved in recrystallization, distillation, chromatography, and extraction. The writing style is academic, but friendly enough to keep you interested. I found it great to read before doing the scheduled experiments in O-Chem lab. However, this is a very "student"-ish text and I seriously doubt professionals would find it useful, unless you're looking for a refresher course in the basic techniques. The labs I took had a significant amount of NMR involved; not much discussion in this text about that. The problems provided are usually good, but there are no answers given. I'd also recommend "Principles and Techniques in an Integrated Chem Laboratory" by Aikens, Bailey, et al.

  1. A mechanistic approach to learning organic chemistry seems to make a whole lot more sense than memorizing/regurgitating the slew of reactivities available for each functional group along the way. Why then do we not have a text which allows us to do this? A few authors in the past have attempted to construct a text which views organic chemistry from a mechanistic (rather than funtional-group)standpoint, but none have been able to offer something an UNDERGRADUATE could embrace. Hornback has clearly and logically presented this often intimidating subject here, and should be praised for hurdling the barrier to offer the first readable mechanism-oriented text.

  2. This is by far one of the best texts for undergraduate organic chemistry! The explanations are clear and concise, and ideas and concepts are well-organized. The book is easy to follow and the problems, both within and at the ends of the chapters, make the concepts crystal clear.

I used an earlier edition of this textbook and solutions manual when I took organic chemistry (2000-2001), and it (and some great professors) made the class easier and enjoyable. Having encountered other textbooks at other schools, I am grateful that the chemistry department at my alma mater uses this text. I am an organic chemistry TA now, and wish my students were using this book!

Bottom line, I sing the book's praises every chance I get! It's a bit expensive brand-new, but worth every penny!

  3. I used Hornback's 2nd edition for my introductory organic chemistry courses and found the text to be excellent, and often surpassing the in-class instruction I recieved from my professor. If you are an undergraduate student taking organic chemistry I would recommend this text above all others. I often refer to it as a reference now that I am taking advanced organic chemistry. If you read the this text, you will do well in your course regardless of the calibre of instruction you are recieving.

  4. Hornback's organic chemistry text is by far the most concise and clear textbook I have ever used for any chemistry course in college. After introducing new concepts, ample practice problems are provided throughout the discussion to help the student stay on track and test her knowledge. The illustrations are also excellent and Hornback encourages the student to use models, which is extremely helpful in the beginning of organic chemistry.

Unlike many science textbooks that drown the reader in confusing detail, Hornback offers the perfect amount of detail in his discussions. The problems at the end of the chapters, ranging from easy-difficult are also extremely helpful to master the material.

Hornback makes an allegedly difficult subject easy to master, presenting the information in a logical manner.

5 comments about Organic Chemistry II as a Second Language: Second Semester Topics.
  1. If you are struggling in your second semester of Organic Chemistry, then this is just the book you need. The way it is written makes it easier to understand the concepts better than any textbook. This book literally saved my life in Organic Chemistry. I highly recommend this product.

  2. This book should be used by ALL students struggling in organic chemistry. The subect is not easy. But this author's insight into the subject knows how to guide a student into actually learning the material. I wish I had bought the book earlier.
Excellent book recommended for those who need to master organic.

  3. I ordered the book a week ago. I was desperate about orgo at that time. Read the first page and you'll find that it teaches you the skills to deal with orgo mechanism, synthesis, and predicting product. They all started to make sense now. I am still in the third chapter but I really feel the differences it makes. If I have read this book earlier, I won't have such a hard time in orgo.

  4. I struggle typically because I'm not spending enough time with the textbook assigned.
All in all, my only complaint is I don't have enough time to take full advantage of this wonderful supplement.

  5. I have both the Organic Chemistry as a Second Language, and the Second Semester topics addition. I find both very useful tools for understanding OCHEM. The first semester book has useful nomenclature section, which is not covered at all in the second addition. I think a nomenclature section for the benzene section, and to show how Carboxylic Acid and other carbonyls are named and numbered would be helpful practice, although some of it may be review. However, the explanations for benzene ring mechanisms and modificaton is indispensable. This series of books are only supplements, and cannot replace the text, or lecture because there are topics not covered in the "language" books, and some reactions that are included in the Second Semester book may not be required in a specific course. You can not go wrong by investing in these books and working the practice problems.

  1. Great textbook. Very clear and thorough. Since I am having to teach myself this Chemistry course this semester, I am greatful that I at least have a good book to work with.

  2. FAST AND FABULOUS SERVICE. ITEM CAME IN BETTER SHAPE THAN ANTICIPATED, NO PROBLEMS WITH TRANSACTION OR SHIPPING. THANKS!!

  3. The book was in good conditions, but the shipping was very slow.. The seller did not send it to me in the first 3 weeks... According to her, she did not receive a confirmation from amazon.. I got the book a month later. I needed the book for my class. I received it a week before the end of the course..I wrote to her and she replied two days later.. I never had this problem before... I go to school and I have bought all my books on line... I am very disappointed.

  4. the book came in a better condition than i thought it was going to be, i ordered it used and it was practically new when i got it, the only downside was that the shipping was a bit slow, i expected the book days sooner than i got it.

5 comments about Examkrackers: 1001 Questions in MCAT, Organic Chemistry.
  1. This book is a hasty review of Orgo, but it covers most of the MCAT material in relatively small number of pages. Although some diagrams are not very helpful, it tells you most of what you need. It is basically a good book if you are a time-pressed pre-med trying to take the MCAT in 2 months. If you have more time, I recommend reading over your orgo textbook once more and doing problem sets in various other MCAT preparation materials (the ones with only MCAT style problems). Hope this helps.

  2. It does not deal sufficiently with reactions. The questions are too easy. I don't have a problem with the questions being in discrete forms since one needs solid understanding of the materials (through discrete questions) before being able to tackle passage based questions. But, after having gone through about 50% of the book so far, I don't feel like I've improved in my knowledge base in Ochem. If you need very very basic questions, this book is for you. I get the feeling this book was put together in a hasty manner with little thought invested in the quality of the questions. I would not recommend this book.

  3. The last comment from James Min is on the ball, however, although many of the questions ARE too easy..there are too easy for sum1 who has a solid foundation in OCHEM, like myself. However, with sum of teh questions that i got wrong, the explaniations were perfect in allowing me to understand and review sum of the things that I 4got. Example: What is the hydrogen defeciency of C1204h3Br1-

The formula for this problem is (2n+2) - x/2 where is the number of carbons and x is the number of hydrogen OR Halogen...My OCHEM prof never mentioned that we added the halogens to this equation! So overall I will give the book 4 stars

  4. The Exam Kracker series are great for testing your knowledge and reviewing for MCAT. I found these books to be indispensable. If you can not afford to buy it new, try craigslist to find a used copy. It will definitely improve your MCAT score.

  5. book is pretty helpful...the questions seem fairly easy, though. this is probably because my o-chem professors ROCK and my class has been quite rigorous...the mcat o-chem questions seem easy because I've had such a good o-chem education. the 1001 questions book is a decent review, though

3 comments about The Carbon Age: How Life's Core Element Has Become Civilization's Greatest Threat.
  1. Carbon is everywhere. While many people have gone through life without realizing this basic fact, this captivating new book shows us why it is time to reconsider this position. Roston opens the door to the world of carbon - an element that impacts everything from global warming to your new bike. A former Time magazine reporter, Roston writes in an engaging, clear and accessible style carrying us from the beginning of the universe to today's debates around carbon emissions. This is a must-read for anyone looking to learn more about the universe and where it is going. Carbon ... who knew!?!

  2. First of all, the first review by Michael is obviously written by the author or friend. Right away that is a sign the book probably sucks. The book skips around and never gets into detail about any certain subject.

  3. To solve 80% of global warming, the world would have to go veg!

  1. This text is an easy read, and you will understand the reactions that are given in the text examples. So why the low rating? Organic chemistry is all about "prediction". And when it comes to teaching you how to predict the outcomes of reactions you've never seen before, it is lacking! You can study this text two hours a day, every day, and unless you have an uncanny ability to understand chemistry (I don't)--you will still not have this most fundamental skill you need to succeed. Try "Organic Chemistry as a Second Language" and "Organic Chemistry II as a Second Language". They will have you predicting and understanding Orgo in no time!! This course isn't hard at all- once someone explains it to you properly. David Klein (the author of those two books) does that beautifully.

  2. This book was the required textbook for my organic I and II class...and it didn't help with either. If you didn't understands something the way the professor explained it, the book provided no help. The explainations in it were very short and were of no help at all. Most of the time the examples were too simple to really teach you anything. This is a very elementary textbook, that doesn't seem worthy to me of a place in any college or university.

  3. Good Textbook, clear and concise. However, for an advanced student who needs or wants to learn advanced explanations refer to another textbook on occasion. I use this as a reference on occasion b/c it serves my needs just fine, the SOLUTIONS/STUDY Guide manual is a must and gives very detailed explanations of the problems in the text, the manual is EXCELLENT. The strong point of this book are the practice questions which really get you thinking.

  4. This seemed like an okay book for chemistry. There were a few things that we covered in class however, that were not in this book, just a couple of reactions. I recommend the book "Pushing Electrons" as a supplement to this to help with resonance, it helped me a lot.

  5. I have used this text in my Organic classes and have found it very useful and informative. The author uses clear explanations and examples for all key elements in each chapter. The mechanisms and reactions are clearly described and detailed. Also for every college student the solutions manual reveals it all. It has both odd and even solutions. The only reason I give it 4 stars instead of 5 is because not all of the exercise problems really follow what you actually get taught in class, but they are still useful. Great text overall.
