2 comments about Beyond Measure: Modern Physics, Philosophy, and the Meaning of Quantum Theory.
  1. This was just the tonic I needed to get past the perceived barrier of mystery surrounding micro physics. Jim Baggott writing is clear and the subject is well organized. I feel I am no longer ignorant of this amazing field.

  2. Two thumbs up (in superpostion)! By far the best overview of Quantum theory that I've read thus far (out of 10 books). The author doesn't pick and choose from the competing interpretations of QT to advance an agenda, (philosophical, social, political, or scientific). QT development is presented in its historical context with all the resistance that accompanies new theories. Alternatives to the orthodox Copenhagen interpretation are fairly presented. All the mathematics are thankfully placed in appendices at the end of the book. Still, some of the text explaining experimental setup and reasoning was too technical for me, but I grasped the gist of the "interpretation." The meaning of QT is still being debated. The many interpretations articulated in the many theories designed to explain microphysics phenomena essentially boil down to 2 competing metaphysical postions: the "anti-realist" Copenhagen interpretation (Heisenberg, Bohr, Pauli) and the "realist" hidden variables interpretation (Einstein, Schrodinger, Bohm, etc.). This is obviously an oversimplification, but I can confidently now state that I understand that I don't understand Quantum Theory.

5 comments about March's Advanced Organic Chemistry: Reactions, Mechanisms, and Structure, 5th Edition.
  1. I paid more for my 4th ed. new, and find it to be worth even more. It is not a cookbook per se, but it is a very comprehensive textbook that details general reactions by functional group. It outlines every way known to remove, add to, or otherwise modify every functional group. There is as much commentary as is needed, if not more, and every pathway is mentioned regardless of how exotic or primitive and low-yielding. The corresponding OS synth refs for specific cpds. are given for each type of reaction, along with a total of 15,000 other refs in footnotes. This was cutting-edge in 92, with much updating of the 3rd ed. The index will take you to the section that shows how to make the manipulations you want - if it doesn't, it probably can't be done.

  2. March never leaves my desk. It covers everything. From functional group transformations to mechanisms to FMO theory - you name it it's there. Highly recommended for any advanced undergraduate, graduate or post-doctoral researcher. It's a bookshelf staple that any organic chemist should have available.

  3. I bought a copy of this text (2nd Ed) after finishing my sophomore year of college, and it proved to be the best single investment I've ever made in chemistry. I used it so often, I had to duct-tape the book together.

I think the happiest moment of my career was when my name appeared in the index of a later edition. Anyway, buy it and treasure it.

  4. This is by far the best text I have found. Although it is considered a text book, it is more handy as a reference tool. I have seen no other book that contains more information than March's. This book is actually worth the price.

  5. I'm pretty sure that you _must_ have this book if you are studying advanced organic chemistry. Maybe it's not the best one to use as a study guide, but it's extremely helpful as a reference book both for undergrads and graduate students. However, one can argue that this edition is a bit out-of-date.

  1. This book is fantastic! It has a complete set of every important named reaction with its respective mechanism and literature references. The simple layout makes this book very user friendly. The mechanisms are easy to follow and the references are very useful making this book excellent for use at any level from undergraduate to graduate and beyond. This book is a definite must have for anyone studying advanced organic chemistry, as it is the named reactions bible.

  2. this book is a really great resource for organic chemists. it has all the main name reactions in alphabetical order, and does a good job showing not only the overall reaction, but also the step-by-step mechanism as well. it also has references listed for each reaction, for further clarification. i recommend it for any organic chemist as part of their library.

  3. This book is nice for writing the basics of mechanism. There are some other books available in market. But I will recommend this book because they are short and concise. This third edition is more or less similar to second edition.

  4. i received the book in good condition.
The book is very valuable for any org. chemist,be it Acadamic or Industrial.we have the old edition also. I use it to train the youngsters.
    worth to buy.

  5. Dr. Li's Name Reactions is a very good but basic name reactions book. It covers the reaction mechanics but does not offer the background information and comprehensive literature references of Laszlo Kurti's and Barbara Czako's Strategic Applications of Named Reactions in Organic Synthesis.

It is also much sparser and limited than Name Reactions and Reagents in Organic Synthesis, which includes examples of the use of the named reactions and also the use and mechanisms of named reagents.

Li's book is very good but is limited in comparison to the competitors. It is not a bad book but does not offer the value and utility of the other books named in this review.

5 comments about Name Reactions and Reagents in Organic Synthesis.
  1. I bought this book as required for my organic synthesis course. I am dissapointed with how little detail is given for each mechanism. Also the examples given are also very difficult to work out and no solution is given for each example.

  2. It is good, with lot of examples and references. However, I did find some of the reactions and reagents have been ommitted. besides there is very little explanations for certain reaction mechanisms. But I would recommend this book to all synthetic organic chemists.

  3. Tetris move over Mundy's got a new game. How do you make science fun? You make a game of it. This is exactly what we do in our lab, we use this book as a game. We open up to a random page to see if there is an error, and most times (the guy shouting behind is saying every time) we are not dissapointed. This book is useful in that it has contemporary examples, where March does not, however, the number of errors makes this book useless for somebody who is trying to learn the material for the first time. Zero stars for accuracy, five stars for entertainment.
    Here is the Gauntlet!!!
Page 425 (meta photoaddition) TL 44 2011. product- wrong structure
Page 365 (Knoevenagel condensation)TL,45, 3999. Ugi-Knoevenagel Rxn starting material aniline derivative does not have a NITROGEN.
Page 428 (Michael addition) JACS, 125, 15837. Not a Dicobalt product. It is a ester. Page 429 Robinson annulation Not a Michael addition
Page 487 (pauson-khand)OL, 5,3491. SM is an allene so the product is missing an alkene in the seven membered ring.
Page 176 (Corey-Fuchs reaction) Seyferth protocol: reasonance structures are wrong. They are missing a hydrogen atom. Thus the rest of the mechanism is wrong.
Page 235 (Evans chiral Auxillaries) Typos of Me and Et
Page 44 (Arndt-Eistert homologation) It is supposed to be a carbene so why is there two lone pairs. The Kowalski Ester Homologation: Should be LiCHBr2 not LiCHBR2 and after the rxn arrow the addition component should be CHBr2 addition not CH2Br.
Page 459 (Nenitzescu indole synthesis) If it is a indole synthesis they all should have indole products. One product is drawn as an indene. Also in the solid phase example the intermediate is wrong. The solid phase linker is connected to the amide not the aromatic ring.
Page 47 (Aza-cope) It's supposed to be formic acid quenching the rxn not peroxyformic acid.
Page 445 (Myers-Saito cyclization) Jacs 118, 10783. Starting material has 17 carbons - product has 18 carbons. One of them is wrong

  4. When I wrote an editorial review for Mundy's book I really thought it was the best one on the market. At about the same time "Strategic Applications of named reactions in organic synthesis" by Kurti and Czako (forward by Corey and Intro by Nicolaou) came out, and that book is AWESOME. Go check it out. We even use it as a text book in upper division organic synthesis courses.

  5. Mundy's book is very useful. It does list the many name reactions and their mechanisms. It has more examples of the use of those reactions and literature citations than Jie Jack Li's Name Reactions: A Collection of Detailed Reaction Mechanisms. However, it is very limited and not very detailed when compared to Kurti's and Czako's Strategic Applications of Named Reactions in Organic Synthesis, in my opinion, the best book of this kind available.

However, there is one factor that keeps Mundy's book close to my hands: the name reagents section. In this section, the name reagents are shown with common names and the reactions that are most associated with those reagents. The mechanisms for those reactions is also shown. I find this is very useful.

It you intend to buy only name reactions book, I can't recommend this one be it. But, if you intend to get two, I think this one will find its uses.
