5 comments about Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers.
- This book is an enthralling read about journey of the cadaver. Roach goes into great detail about things like organ donation, medicinal uses, crime scene usage, cannibalism and a whole host of research and experimentation that have been done to cadavers. Also covered are ways to dispose of your own corpse-compost heap anyone?
This book is not for the squeamish. Roach goes into very detailed accounts of every trial a cadaver is put through. So if you don't like watching surgery on TV, I would not recommend this book.
I found this book much easier to read than Bonk, Roach's book about the history of sex research. The material is not as dry and the book never bogs down like Bonk did. In fact, when I reviewed Bonk, I gave it 4 stars but after reading Stiff I would give it only 3.
- If you have ever wondered to yourself what happens to bodies when they die, this book offers that and more. Much more. I was astounded at what is done - both stateside and abroad - with the physical body. Who'da thought? The humor keeps you from being entirely grossed out and I found myself somewhere between morbid fascination and uncontrollable laughter. Super book.
- This was one of the best non-fiction books I have ever read. The author really cuts to the chase and asks the questions everyone really want to know. I could not believe how laugh out loud funny this book was, yet she was never disrespectful to the topic, the people she interacted with, nor the "dearly departed". I recommend this to anyone who has even the slightest interest in what happens to our bodies after death. It has opened my eyes to some choices I didn't know I had (composting is intriguing...). I am so glad she didn't include pictures.
- Lots of interesting facts and I was impressed at how the author managed to write about this subject. Seriously, if someone told me they were going to write a book about cadavers and it was going to be a best seller, I wouldn've thought they were crazy. That being said, Mary Roach did manage to write a best selling book on the subject, although some of the information and description of the facts made my stomach churn. Maybe I'm just squeamish, but her descriptions on the way the human cadaver were used throughout history made me a bit nauseous. Also, I don't know why people thought this book was hilarious. Interesting maybe, but hilarious? I don't see it. Some of the facts she uncovered were amusing (in an interesting way,) but I didn't fall down laughing. If you're interested in knowing what happens to human cadavers and has a strong stomach, then this book is pretty informative, but if you want a funny book, go somewhere else.
- One of the best books I've read. Amazingly hilarious while talking about science, a very morbid one at that... I strongly recommend this book. If you are a physician, you will love it. If you are a medical examiner, go buy it right now!!

5 comments about The DASH Diet Action Plan: Based on the National Institutes of Health Research: Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension.
- Had a lot of "doable" suggestions for lowering blood pressure from daily exercises to meal planning.
- The book was informational and the content well organized However, I was not inspired by the writing skill of the author. I found the book very easy to put down.
- When I ordered the book, I was told that my order didn't qualify for free shipping, but if I met an amt, it would, so I ordered an additional item, but since the additional item (edger blade) was shipped from a different location/supplier, I was not given the free shipping.
I did not know that at the time.
- Very helpful in giving a plan to help reduce blood pressure. Well written and easy to follow guidelines.
- this has been a easy to follow plan, and can see results fairly quickly if you stick to it.

5 comments about Izzy & Lenore: Two Dogs, an Unexpected Journey, and Me.
- I've read all Jon's books and loved them all. But, this one is my all time favorite. It touched my heart so deeply. Jon portrayed beautifully the connection between dogs and humans. His honesty about not always finding the right words to describe this connection was refreshing. Sometimes things just don't have an explanation. They can only be felt with the heart. Jon does this so eloquently in Izzy and Lenore. My own dog, who is in a wheelchair, does therapy work with hospital patients and assisted senior facilities. What transpires when she interacts with them is absolute love on a level most times I cannot find words for. All I know is that I witness something bigger than myself. Bravo, Jon for sharing Izzy and Lenore with hospice and nursing home residents and now sharing those beautiful stories with the world... what a gift for everyone.
- Katz seems to have found a new voice for himself...a voice in which he can speak to the reader with more sincerity, more feeling, and to be honest an easier more flowing speech. This book reads like travel literature, moving easily from section to section, experience to experience. The dogs are once again front and center, but I felt as though their 'voices' were more distinct. I felt that this book was much easier to read and enjoy than his previous titles, although it should be noted that some of the subject matter may be a little too close to home for some. Katz approaches these moments with humor and at the same time sensitivity...dare I suggest the word grace. An excellent read for anyone interested in the power of dogs and the bond between spirits.
- Jon's story is really about many journeys intertwined. At the center is an abandoned dog named Izzy and the discovery of his amazing gift for shepherding humans through the most difficult transitions they will ever face. Along the way, Jon experiences a journey deep into himself, to a place he's avoided for too long. Thanks to Lenore (the adorable face on the cover), Izzy, Rosie, Elvis and a few very special humans, Jon was able to cross the valley of shadows and share a story of hope, love, compassion, and understanding.
For anyone whose life has been touched by the unconditional love of a dog (or really any animal), this book will make perfect sense. I purchased it on a whim one particularly rotten morning on my way to work, and finished it the same day. Thanks to Jon, Izzy, Lenore and the others, I have new hope for my own journey...
- This is probably Jon Katz's most personal book yet, and one of his finest. There is some soul-searching here, but also enough focus on others -- with extremely well-drawn portraits of his dogs and, most touchingly, the hospice patients they help -- to keep it from becoming self-centered. It is a continuation of the story of Bedlam Farm, but you don't need to have read Katz's earlier books to find this one moving, entertaining, and, in its examination of the human-animal bond, often thought-provoking and enlightening. Katz has become deeply engaged with photography in recent years (as chronicled on his excellent blog) and the beautiful black and white photos here add yet another dimension to a really lovely book.
- He is my favorite author....involves his audience right away, makes the reader feel like extended family...has excellent balanced perspective., and captures the essence of his animals, and for those that share that love of animals, he gives us an extended animal family as well.

5 comments about The 36-Hour Day: A Family Guide to Caring for People with Alzheimer Disease, Other Dementias, and Memory Loss in Later Life, 4th Edition.
- This book, now in its 4th edition, is absolutely one of the finest books that has been written regarding Alzheimer's Disease and the process of care giving. Full of detail about the disease, this book also takes it a step further, providing very practical information on care giving, making a home / care giving setting a safe place, and, frankly, providing suggestions for periodic care giving to the care giver. Throughout the several editions, I have come to recommend, loan, give, patients and care givers this book perhaps 50 times or more, and, every time I hear the same thing - "what a helpful, fantastic book!". Published by Johns Hopkins and holding a 95% 5 star rating on Amazon, it's unbeatable. it's 600 pages long. that might, at first blush, seem like a lot to read. none of us who give care to others can set aside 10 to 60 hours (depending on your reading speed) right away to read it all and made sense of it all. Take your time. It's not a race to get through it - it's a race to understand the contents - take your time and begin to put into practice an additional suggestion each day. This book is a labor of love and is worth the price, used, new, and way more (oh no - don't tell Johns Hopkins that or they'll start charging us a lot more!!). Best of luck, and be sure to find for yourself a support group in your community or on-line.
- This is an excellent book. It is written in a warm and caring manner which is easy to understand. It is full of information not just for anyone dealing with a dementia patient, but for anybody who is caring for another person, (or who may think at some point they will). It covers subjects which apply to the caring of anyone who is ill and/or elderly, even if it is not dementia. I would recommend this book to anyone, before they are faced with the illness. I wish I'd read it sooner, but better late than never. Absolutely a great book, it should be in every library. I plan to buy 2 copies for my library, I will definitely NOT donate mine. I can't say enough good things about this book.
- An extremely helpful book for those who are experiencing dementia and/or Alzheimer's with a loved one. You are not alone! And all those strange things that are happening are not out of the ordinary for the condition. This book covers the basics, and provides helpful suggestions for living with, caring for, and coping with dementia and your love one.
- A truly remarkable and instructional guide for care givers of people with dementia or alzheimers. So much of what was going on in my mother's life at this stage, began to make sense to me and I was better prepared to help her. Great book!

- This book has many useful suggestions and shows a deep understanding of the challenges of caregiving for someone with dementia. It was comforting to read the short descriptions of situations and how to react to them. It made me less irritable with caring for my relative. I plan to get another copy to have available for when I meet other people who face the same issues.

5 comments about Clinically Oriented Anatomy (5th Edition).
- As 1st year med student, this book has been extremely helpful in bringing the gross anatomy lab memorization to actual practice. Clinical "Blue boxes" very helpful and interesting. Also lists muscles with innervations and blood supply very clearly.
- Moore's Anatomy text was a great buy for me. I used it in my 2nd year anatomy course and am now using it in 3rd year anatomy. Diagrams are clear and concise and there also a variety of additional boxes which supply info about the types of disease/trauma states which significant impact on anatomy. A great buy for any biomedical anatomy major or medical student.
- This book was helpful in understanding the clinical applications and benefits in knowing and understanding one's anatomy. It made the simple and complicated anatomical topics digestible, and it helped organize the body easily.
- This is an excellent text no matter what health profession you are in. I very rarely read the text. The pictures accompanied with the tables are basically what I used. You would see the picture and have a table of origin, insertion, action and nerve. If you really want to go into depth then you can read it. Moore did a great look at and then I would recommend a real life atlas such as Rohen to compliment the cartoons with cadaver pictures.
- Here is the low down. This book is not a book that you can even consider reading through! It is, however, one of the best references that you can buy. I felt like the text was clear and detailed on every anatomical part that I wanted to know about. In medical school, there were times that I needed to reference something because I didn't understand. This book did a great job of filling that roll. It is comforting to know that I have this one on my shelf, and I am still referencing it. The pictures are clear and informative, but it is a text. It is not an Atlas or a review. It will explain things to you in words with a few picutres to supplement. In hindsight, however, it wasn't necessary. It is nice to have, but you can do without if your class doesn't requre it.

- In the hospital: When your resident asks you to write orders for 17 medicines on one patient, you'll be glad you have this... It's in everyone's pocket. Make sure you have this year's copy. This is the one with small print and no spiral binding. This is almost ALWAYS quicker than the PDA. I've raced people. Also, no batteries to rely on.

5 comments about The Out-of-Sync Child Has Fun, Revised Edition: Activities for Kids with Sensory Processing Disorder.
- This is a wodnerful book for parents of children with special needs. Weather it be autism, ADHD,Asperger's, anything!!! Wonderful activities! It is also a great book for teacher's of ALL types of kids! I keep this book handy all the time when I'm looking for ideas of things to do with my kids.
- being a mother of a special needs child, i wanted some new ideas for activites my child could do in and outside, this is the perfect book.
- I've had this book for a couple of years and I love it. I've purchased at least twenty books on autism and this is one of the two I have kept. The ideas are practical, involve materials you can buy inexpensively (or you probably already have around the house) and it's fun for ALL kids. My nt daughter enjoys these activities just as much as my ASD son!
- Informative, interesting. Helpful information in dealing with sensory perception disorders. Have used a few ideas from the book. It was well worth the purchase.
- Contains many practical and easy activities that are fun for any child, not just "out of sync." Tried several already and found my grandson loved the originality and the use of everyday objects as situations for play.

5 comments about Davis's Drug Guide for Nurses, with Resource Kit CD-ROM (Davis's Drug Guide for Nurses).
- This book got me through my first year of clinicals!!!!!!!!
As a nursing student we were required to know all the information possible for the medications our patients would be taking. This drug guide helped me so much! It comes with a CD you can put on your computer so you can just type in the name and look up information about certain drugs. If you don't have a computer at the time though, this book is small enough to just carry around with you and contains every bit of information you will need to know about medications. It was very helpful!!!
- This is the only Drug Book I will buy. Once again, they published a awesome drug book.
- I was supposed to order this book for my ADRN program, and I have found it wonderful and easy to use. People have to keep in mind that it doesn't have every drug that ever existed in here, but I am able to understand well and get my homework done. I will always keep this book and use it for reference once I graduate. This not only was required, but if it wasn't, I would recommend it.
- My experience with Amazon.com has once again upheld itself. Always, honest, no hidden fees, and the murchandise arrives on time. I think it's a great thing also, to do the follow up, to make sure customers are happy. Job well done
- This is a very useful guide to different medications, being at the beginning of my nursing education it is very helpful to have this on hand to look up new drugs as needed. Highly recommended.

5 comments about Final Gifts: Understanding the Special Awareness, Needs, and Communications of the Dying.
- This is one of the finest books to help you understand the dying process both on helping the dying person and helping yourself.
- contains valuable information on what to expect emotionally from and how to interact with a dying loved one. the author assumes life after life, which is unknown in reality. this affects her interpretations of the departings' experience. if you can overlook this, it's a good book.
- Ms. Callanan and Ms. Kelley have written a guide of different ways patients may react in the process of dying and how everyone involved can be somewhat prepared for what happens towards the end of life. It is very much written in layman's terms. You won't have to worry about cracking open a dictionary for this baby. This book was a great help to my wife when she, her dad and her four siblings helped their dying mother. Many of the examples cited in this book did occur during the final week. The book is illuminating and will give the reader a great deal of comfort. Do yourself a favor and read it.
- Final Gifts is a blessing for anyone going through the experience of sharing "nearing death" end of life with a loved one. This book was given to me by Hospice nurses and it opened my eyes and helped me to understand some of the communications that my mother was trying to convey. I recommend this book to anyone who has a terminally ill loved one.
- I first read this book as my dad was approaching death, which was caused by his cancer. It gave me valuable insights into what my dad, and my family, were going through. I have since purchased and given copies of this book to several friends and family members. I highly recommend it to anyone, but especially if they are currently going through the impending loss of a loved one.

5 comments about The Man Who Mistook His Wife For A Hat: And Other Clinical Tales.
- I bought this book years ago and I still think it's one of the best I ever read. It's a permanent part of my library.
- I have not received the books yet. I am in Germany and hope I get it soon.
- Book arrived promptly after ordering and was in good condition. I would buy from this seller again,
- This is an amazing book. It completely changes a reader's perspective on the study and practice of Neurology. While not every observation may yet be backed by research, the way that Dr Sacks approaches a problem is unique and inspiring. Read it before you start your Neurology term to arouse curiosity in even the most mundane of clinic patients!
- I had to read chapters of this book for a cognitive neuroscience class, but everywhere this book went, people had to look at it and read it. It's so interesting, it reads really fast, and you really can read it in pieces as I did. In fact, a lot of the chapters gets a bit repetitive, so I tended to skip around. Still, you get a really good feel for the patients and their experience, and what that may tell us about how the brain works. Fascinating!!
