3 comments about Merrill's Pocket Guide to Radiography.
- A great little book. It has pictures of positions (and radiographs to match), and charts to fill in your own information.
- Great little book to keep by my side but i wish the pages were laminated or at least where the pages meet the spiral because they are so thin and seem likely to rip at any time.
- This pocket sized Merrill's is great. I work at temporary assignments and find it very helpful when special views outside the routine are requested.

5 comments about The 36-Hour Day: A Family Guide to Caring for Persons with Alzheimer Disease, Related Dementing Illnesses, and Memory Loss in Later Life (3rd Edition).
- My sisters and I come into contact with many people dealing with the devastating disease of Alzheimer's. This book is one that we often recommend. It is important that those with Alzheimer's disease keep active and feel that they are still useful. This book has many ideas for appropriate activites. Mary ... www.alzawareness.com .... Alzheimer's Awareness Source.
- If you have a family member with Alzheimers you must read this. It explains what and sometimes why Alzheimers patients act like they do, and how difficult it can be to care for them. Even if you are not a caregiver this will help understand the stresses caused by having a family member with Alzheimers. Also gives good advice on how to deal with difficult circumstances that will arise.
- This book has been quite a blessing for those times when I need to look something up regarding this illness. I know that I'll find just the help I need and great ideas to make life easier when a family member is dealing with this. It's so great to have a reference book handy that seems to have all the answers I need. I am most grateful for this resource.
- I am a caregiver, and this is very helpful.
It is a great reference book.
It helps to know I am not the only one dealing with these issues.
And that some of the things happening are a completely natural part of the aging process.
- This books was first published in 1981 and again in 1991 and 1999. When my mother was diagnosed with Alzheimers in 1995, I became aware of this book and purchased copies for my four siblings and my father. It was a God-send to us; as we learned quite a lot about the desease and the day to day caring for her. One thing I learned was no matter how many times she would repeat and repeat and repeat the same story, I would just say "oh, really" and just let her go on and on. Previously, I would say things like "mom, you already TOLD me this a million times." This would upset her and cause her much agitation. Mom has passed on (12/24/2000), but I like to think we helped her go without a lot of angst and agitation. Please read the book. It has many, many fine points. Thank you. m

5 comments about Examkrackers Mcat Complete Study Package (Examkrackers).
- I recently purchased this book set in preparation for the MCAT. In my opinion, the science information is presented in a satisfactory manner in most cases however, I have a hard time understanding how Jonathan Orsay, a history major, feels that he has any business writing a science text.
Moreover, I would recommend that any student who intends to use this book set should take the information presented in the verbal reasoning booklet with a grain of salt. Some of the tips are useful but the practice exams exhibit just how abysmal the authors' comprehension of the written english language truly is. If you can, try to find something better.
- The package of books was delivered promptly. I worried about where it would be dropped off, but it was safely tucked away on the porch, in the event of rain. The packaging was tidy and secure.
I was super pleased with the set of books. Crease-free and shiny. The presentation of the information made me feel like these books would really be all I need to prepare for the MCAT, thus saving me a couple thousand dollars on a course.
- These books are a great way for me to study. They break everything down so everything is easy to digest. These books are by far the best I have come across.
- These books aren't that bad...a bit of dry read...but it is studying for the MCATs. Gives a good idea of what should be on the exam, but I have yet to take it so I cannot tell how helpful it will as far as scoring is concerned. Good overall price too.
- ...because they are a SCAM. I bought this set based on the positive reviews, largely ignoring the cautionary negative reviews scattered throughout. The truth is, these books are nowhere near as good as the reviews say. Lemme tell you right now -- the negative ones are the real ones.
In a nutshell: I found the books to be very poorly written and organized. First off, they spend a ton of time talking down to you and bashing other exam companies. If they were really as good as they say, they wouldn't need to do that. Then they go on to explain why their SINGLE AUTHOR is "uniquely qualified". Their reason? He's a history major who never even went to medical school, who "sat for three MCATs while considering medical school" over a span of about EIGHT YEARS back in the late 80's/early 90's, and finally "scored in the ninetieth percentile in all three sections". Um. Excuse me. Isn't 90th percentile about a 33-34? The first time I took the MCAT, and all I did was read haphazardly through my books and do 3 practice tests. I didn't even understand optics going in. I got a 37. If all he could manage was a 33-34 (and that's assuming his 90th percentile in all three subjects was even on a single test) after three tests and eight years, what the hell makes him think he's qualified to write a book teaching ME how to take the MCAT?
But let's just ignore all that and discuss the meat of the books themselves: the science.
On that count, I have to say that the explanations are oftentimes really convoluted and confusing. The information on the MCAT test structure itself is flat-out wrong in a number of places. There are typos all over the place, and they have the audacity to charge you a forums registration fee on their website to look at the errata for the books. The "MCAT tips" from their "Salty the Kracker" mascot were useless and extremely irritating. And probably worst of all, the practice problems are horrible. They look like they were copied off some generic textbook -- totally off the scope of the MCAT (either too easy or too hard), and sometimes downright illogical/wrong.
The one good thing I have to say about their books is that they draw out all the electron-pushing diagrams in o-chem, which few other review books do. For everything else, they were crap. I finally fled to Kaplan, which I found to be leaps and bounds better. Which isn't to say everyone should go get a Kaplan book, because I haven't had a chance to look through Gold Standard, Princeton Review, Columbia Review, or any of the others -- but it is to say that you should, AT ALL COSTS, avoid exam krackers.
Horrible!!

5 comments about Dr. Mary's Monkey: How the Unsolved Murder of a Doctor, a Secret Laboratory in New Orleans and Cancer-Causing Monkey Viruses are Linked to Lee Harvey Oswald, ... Assassination and Emerging Global Epidemics.
- This book will definitely make you reconsider the murder of JFK, along with the cancer so many of us fight each day. It's scary to imagine what the government can do.
- As a native New Orleanian, I was 20 years old when Dr. Sherman was murdered and remember parts of the strange story of her murder in her St. Charles Ave apartment. Having actually met a couple of the players in the book, back in the early and mid-60's, remembering the stories of the Primate Center over the years and various related vague controversies, I find Haslam's story very compelling, well researched and totally believable - it sure tied up a lot of loose ends for me about many questions I've had since 1962. It also helps explain why so many people of my generation (who took the polio vaccine in question) seem so susceptible to the current cancer epidemic, at least here in New Orleans. Call me cynical, but to me, there is nothing far-fetched in this book at all and Haslam clarifies a lot of issues/mysteries that have been successfully suppressed for 40+ years.
This book was somewhat "under the radar' here and was a word-of-mouth type of thing that locals started to talk about, passing around their copies of the book (which I could initially only find on Amazon); however, I noticed it on display at a Border's store this week (at $19.99). I've referred the book to everyone I know and I am ordering another 4 copies today from Amazon for friends - I think it is a must-read - even if you don't believe part of it, it is a book that is hard to put down and frightening on many levels.
- I was amazed when I read Dr Mary's Monkeys. This is honest research and shows just how corrupt scientists and governments can be. It also explained the connection to why JFK was murdered.
- An incredible journey.Absolutely Brilliant writing! A book that should be in everyone's home. The millions of children innoculated with the polio vaccine, that were contaminated with monkey virus'. This led to a possible
development of soft tissus in later life,(and possibly AIDS). Even worse after the discovery, was the cover-up by the Government. You can NOT put this book down. The documentation and footnotes, are flawless. The new Orleans Connection,Lee Harvey Oswald,Jim Garrison, the death of President Kennedy, and the homicide of Dr. Mary Sherman,The links to the finest researchers brought to New Orleans to try to keep the secret while trying to find an answer. One of the best and most riveting books I have EVER read!
- If you don't want to be challenged, or you want to believe the Warren Commission Report that Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone and unaided in the assassination of JFK, or that New Orleans and the events taking place there played no part in the assassination, don't bother to read Dr Mary's Monkey, for it will disrupt your complacency and demolish your assumptions.
This book is a serious attempt to move into an area of research that is as-yet mostly uncharted with little documentation. And it is no surprise -- most of the people involved are dead -- something happened to them soon after the assassination. One has survived, though; a woman who has created more controversy and discussion than anybody connected to the assassination, save for perhaps Lee Oswald himself.
Judyth Vary Baker, who now resides outside of the US for her own safety, is the witness whose statements pull together this book into a cohesive theory of what might have happened behind the scenes of the assassination. In addition, Haslam is a good writer who uses his own experiences (they create rather eccentric credentials for his passion for his subject-matter) to give us a book that is a real page-turner. An updated and expanded version of his earlier outrageously fascinating book "Mary, Ferrie and the Monkey Virus", which gained a considerable cult following over the years, this edition has photos and documentation galore.

5 comments about The Cartoon Guide to Chemistry (Cartoon Guide To...).
- I used this book in conjunction with a textbook in my general chemistry course over the summer. This book helped illustrate things left unclear in my textbook and give a better intuitive feel for what I was doing. On its own its probably not spectacular since there are gaps to be filled but as a supplement it is amazing.
- I am a high school chemistry teacher. I was totally disapointed with the book to the point of returning. It is factually correct, but lame. The only thing I gleaned from this book was the origin of the word alchemist. I would not by this book. William "Douey" Doucette
- It is so basic in concepts and the presentation (materials and graphics)is not as good as I thought. It would be useful to show some pages of the book to the customers.
- I have all of Gonick s great cartoon books and was really expecting more from this one... I am teaching chemistry and was disappointed. Just compare it with Genetics in cartoons...Chemistry is not as boring as shown here, Larry!
- This book is required summer reading for AP Chemistry. Looks like a fun way to get an overview of the subject.

5 comments about Internship, Practicum, and Field Placement Handbook: A Guide for the Helping Professions (5th Edition).
- Mediators--doctors, social workers, librarians, and others--will definitely find this book very useful in understanding the issues.
For professions, such as the library and information, which does not prioritize internship in its training, are sure to benefit, nevertheless, from the other contents of the book.
Ch. 1 Preparation 1
Ch. 2 Getting Started 17
Ch. 3 Ethical And Legal Issues 28
Ch. 4 Internship Classes and Peer Groups 48
Ch. 5 Supervision 56
Ch. 6 Working with Diversity 77
Ch. 7 Clinical Writing 93
Ch. 8 Records and Progress Notes 102
Ch. 9 Stress and the Helping Professions 114
Ch. 10 Self-care 127
Ch. 11 Assault and Other Risks 139
Ch. 12 Closing Cases 150
Ch. 13 Finishing the Internship 160
Ch. 14 Frustrations, Lessons, Discoveries, and Joy 166
Practicum is anyways a part of such professional courses and this updated version helps all the concerned.
- I had to purchase this book for a psychology practicum class. There simply isn't anything else around to fill it's shoes. That means we are stuck with it.
That said, the book does what it sets ot to do. I will keep it, as I will prabably have to use it in grad school, and it will be a lot more relevant to me as a full intern working in a clinic.
- Baird cuts to the chase. The overwhelming issues facing interns and professionals in psychology and the helping professionsis are presented in a neat, crisp, easy to navigate form. Wwith a light heart, he blends the old standards with new healing models. He has done the work. I will use this many times in the life of my career.
- I was in instructed to buy this book for a School Psychology Practicum class, after reading several chapters I believe the book would be a better fit for a Counseling/Psychology Graduate Internship class. The information included is a good review for a student on internship and helps in bringing all the information learned throughout the program together. But that is all the book was for me, just a review -- no new information not learned in all the other graduate classes.
- i reviewed this book in the library in anticipation of purchasing it. it's fine for what it is, a gathering of information on internship, in one location. the problem is, for what the buyer gets it is distinctly overpriced. i didn't buy it. i found another text, 'field instruction' by wilson, that was much more affordable and serves the purpose for both intern and teacher. it's a few years old, but i saved a lot of money, money i can't afford to waste.

- This is for school but so far it has a lot of information in it. I will be using it for a couple quarters
- I bought the workbook to help me study med-surg. We use a different med-surg text book at my school but i but i got this book to use as a study guide. I have to say that I LOVE THIS BOOK. It helps me learn vocabulary and there are plenty of excercises to help you learn the material. I highly recommend this book.
- This book is ok. It has a few NCLEX questions at the end of each chapter. It has crossroad puzzles and some fill in the blank questions. Not nearly enough though. I go through this book before each of my test. It doesn't really help much at all.

2 comments about Essentials of Maternity, Newborn, and Women's Health Nursing (Point (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins)).
- In a textbook review process designed for ABSN students on March 23, 2006, at the Duke School of Nursing, students reviewed, rated and chose this new text as their textbook for their summer 2006 course: The Nursing Care of the Childbearing Family.
As the course coordinator, I have become increasingly frustrated with the ongoing complaints of students about the size and "massive" amounts of material presented in the classic, maternity nursing text books. In frustration and in an attempt to be more sensitive to the adult learners (the ABSN students) I organized a team of 8 students who reviewed 12 contemporary maternity texts published or reissued in the last 12 months.
Hands down this was the #1 student choice. Students cited: the concise format, synthesis of core information, easy to understand nursing actions, readable charts, illustrations accompanied by real pictures, small size, and attractive cover as reasons for their choice. One students summed it up when she said, "When I look at this text book, I just know I can read it. It does not feel so overwhelming to me as a student."
While the author says it was designed for students in an ADN program, I would say it would be suitable for any beginning student. It has a very usuable on-line review section for students and a CD that accompanies the book.
While the vote is not in if the students will read the assigned readings in this text, I am confident that I am starting out the course with a text that is at least "user friendly" to students. I am very pleased with the choice of this textbook and would recommend it be given a review by maternity faculty and students.
